Government congratulates victorious boxers

Government has congratulated boxers Catherine Phiri and Charles Manyuchi and their trainers on retaining their respective titles in Saturday’s international bouts at Government Complex.

Female boxing heroine Phiri retained the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver bantamweight title after knocking out Bukiwe Nonina of South Africa while Manyuchi retained his WBC international welterweight title after defeating Devis Casseres of Colombia in the third round.

Chief Government Spokesperson Joseph Katema said the recent victory by the two boxers adds to yet another success after the Zambia national soccer team qualified to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Finals to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.

Dr Katema who is Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said Zambia’s continued victories in various sports disciplines is an attestation that the country has huge potential of becoming a sporting powerhouse on the continent.

In a statement issued to ZANIS, the Minister said it is heartening that sports men and women in the country have continued to show high levels of discipline, commitment, determination and patriotism in order to bring glory to the nation.

He said government is confident that with support from the business community and all well-meaning Zambians, boxing will grow and contribute to the wellbeing of the country.

Dr Katema stated that government is ready to work with all stakeholders in ensuring the sport is developed and that young people are given an opportunity to participate in the sport.

The Minister commended the sponsors and all stakeholders for their tireless efforts in ensuring the successful hosting of the event.

  1. Boxer my brother we tried it with late Lottie Mwale Vs Saad Muhamaad, Sam Chiteule vs Nelson Azuma and it just never worked for Zambian boxers fighting outside the country. Let them concentrate fighting fellow African boxers.
