hichilema

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has assured street vendors across the country that he will not remove them from their respective trading places if elected Republican President.

The UPND leader was speaking yesterday when he addressed a mammoth rally at Kanyama’s Twashuka grounds.

“Street vendors, taxi and bus drivers. No one will remove you from where you are,” Mr Hichilema declared amid loud cheers.

And Mr. Hichilema said that one of his top priorities if voted into office will be to reduce the electricity tariffs which he believes are way too high for most people to afford.

Speaking during a rally at Twashuka Ground in Kanyama yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hichilema said that his government will also ensure that local authorities manage land effectively.

He said that his cabinet will have people from all provinces stating that his party is in a hurry to develop Zambia not on tribal lines.

He added that the people of Zambia should not make the mistake they made in 2011 by putting the PF in government.

Mr Hichilema has assured Zambians that he will change their life for better if they elect him as president, and move the country forward.

He said that Zambians now have an opportunity to change their plight for better by voting him, and the UPND into Government on January 20, 2015, warning they should not make another mistake.

Mr. Hichilema said that he will reduce the price of mealie meal and that of fuel to enable poor people transport in their businesses and taking their patients to hospital in an emergency.

He said that he will also lift the wage freeze, and re-instate all the nurses the PF government has fired.

His government will also provide ease and affordable loans to marketeers, bus and taxi drivers.

On education, Mr Hichilema has re-iterated that his government will provide free education up to University level, in a move that is expected to see an overhaul in the bursaries scheme to accommodate all students accepted into colleges and universities.

Mr. Hichilema said that he will also reduce cost of electricity, in as much as the high taxes of mobile telephones because they are currently too expensive for most people and disadvantaging the poor.

On the new constitution, he said that the UPND will ensure that a people driven constitution is enacted before the 2016 general elections, saying, “the 2016 elections will be held under a new constitution.

  1. He should then ask them to clean streets.
Imagine all those who were in Kanyama are line-up to sweep and pick-up trash in Lusaka town center, it will just be a 2 hour action and Lusaka will be clean for 1 months. Repeat the same cleaning action on the 18th January, before winning rally on 19th January.

    • Not a good idea, why not use people who commit misdemeanor offenses instead of locking them in jail, this will reduce congestion and food consumption.

    • …..HH seems to be a breath of fresh air from Lungu & Kaseba’s embarassing circus.

      I think I’ll vote for him mwe…..

      Thanks

    • Was talking to a man in Kitwe. It seems the democracy happening in PF seems to be HH’s Help. Its important that this madness is brought to an end B4 young HH’s head grows bigger than it naturally is

    • Based on the same Kitwe chart, I can confirm watchdog is read more than the Post and if it isn’t shut down, as PF we should know that the end is nigh. Lusaka and the copperbelt has educated. population which accesses info on the net. We likhe it or not, they read the biased ZWD. That means the PF will nt have landslide victory in its stronghold. This cacophony must be burried if want to win

    • There should be programs to build new markets for the and be allocated in a timely but effective manner.
It seems UPND is the party with of all households. Why not taste the them? Its better than the bitter PF anyway.

    • @Nostrademus.

LT and ZR have hatched a scheme to paint HH black. The title is wrong and misplaced.

He will not remove them before creating a better trading place for them.

HH said he will build market places for people in the streets to move to so that hygiene is maintained and reduce the incidence of diseases.

HH is the man of the moment. People are tired of the confusion under confused PF leadership.

      Viv HH.

    • we need sanity in Zambia, Street vendors have to go but slowly. Put up a plan to make sure by 2016? streets are clean and move people to trade in the markets. We can not have people trading everywhere. it is a cost to the country. flies and dirty everywhere. Zambia has to change.

    • This crowd is making people have sleepless nights! Indeed you can tell on the faces that they are fed up and time has come for serious business. You first find the solution to deal with the problem at hand. HH is proactive and not reactive. No matter what negative headline the press gives, the reality is UPND is growing. Viva HH.

    • HH ‘ s message.

      Food cost reduction.

Its possible to reduce meal meal prices by simply reinstating targeted subsidies on staple food production.

      Energy cost reduction.

Its possible to reduce electricity tariffs by getting rid of extortion which has hugely characterised ZESCO under PF cadres. ZESCO has been turned into a cash cow for PF cadres. You will shocked to know that , part of the tariff increase at ZESCO to cover the cost of paying bills for PF cadres who do not pay and just demand their bills to be written off.

Fuel cost can be reduced by removing Sata and Kabimba ‘s Ilunda Chalo(Midland energy) as a procurement agents and pass on the savings to the people. Ilunda chalo adds more than $1.50 per litre to the price of fuel. This money is simply pocketed by PF…

    • I have heard the same promises before from PF. They all talkin’ ’bout the same old thing, I’m about to call a foul in the game

  2. HH means Hakaivotela Heka. This Tonga is desperate together with his supporters. You can’t just be promising things.

    • @Nkumbabukata
We need level headed Zambians if we are to develop our country, and not your tribalistic thinking.
Me I’m Bemba but i believe HH is the right man for now. By the way, I don’t believe in the tribal tag HH has been labelled with, it’s just the wrong perception that other tribes have concerning the Tongas and Lozi’s. It’s better to judge a person as an individual and not collectively as a tribe.

    • What did you get from the 90 days promises.
      Nothing unless you are ………………..

      Don’t just condemn

Who is desperate for power? Isn’t it those trying to force Lungu on the seat. Scared to go to the convention. What are you offering the people that you failed to deliver in 90 days?

    • If you can manage to sit before a PC and type, it should be common sense that whatever the PF promised and even what HH is promising today is not rocket science to achieve (off course you cant develop a nation in 90 days). It just depends on the political will of the rulers. The PF government chose not to give us a people driven constitution because they wanted to be able to steal our money without the risk of being arrested and losing power. HH says he will give to us and if not, there is a clear gate where we can vote him out in the 2016 election.

  3. I like you HH but I think we need as Zambians to learn to separate our politics from our legal obligations.Filthy street vending should never be politicized and politicians should NEVER make decisions against the best public interests for political mileage.

Can you imagine Obama changing NY city by laws to allow filthy hawkers all over Times square just for politics?

    • The fact of the matter is PF allowed the vendors to grow in number and now there is no one place that can contain them.
HH is right in saying not to chase them. The solution is to find a place to accommodate them first.

And I repeat PF allowed the vendors to grow in number. (A problem passed on)

    • HH is right. Street vending is the human face of unemployment. You cannot remove the vendors before you find them meaningful alternatives. HH’s government will have to attract enough investment to create at least 2 million jobs. Then street vending will go away. Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore faced similar challenges before Singapore became a developed country. The starting point is to elect a capable leader who will put together a capable team to deal with all these challenges. HH you have my vote!

  4. HH you’re very wrong on hawkers coz in Zambia we badly need to be a nation of rule of law (not rule of political expediency).

    • @Enka! U are very right, this man seems desperate for political office and is making promises without critical thinking. Anyway most of the voters are cadres, kaponyas (street vendors) who can’t analyse situations, to them its just celebrations!

    • @Enka! U are very right, this man seems desperate for political office and is making promises without critical thinking. Anyway most of the voters are cadres, kaponyas (street vendors) who can’t analyse situations, to them its just celebrations.

    • @Enka

Be careful with the sensational headlines, you read on LT, ZR and the Post. Off late they have been misrepresenting HH big time.

The title for for this article is totally wrong and misplaced. LT decided to report only part of what HH said.

      Fact:
The true version is that HH will not move street vendors before building an alternative place for them. Even those whose homes where build on plots issued illegally by the reckless, useless and confused PF cadres, will not have their homes demolished before an alternative place for them to go is found.

HH does not issue populist statements which he does not believe in.He is a thoughtful leader who does not say anything on the huff like the deceitful PF.

      Viva HH

  5. The whistle has blown. Time for the campaigning to begin. First in from the previously silent quarters is HH. Armed with clear campaign slogans and candy filled promises – surrounded by some familiar faces and even managing a couple of upper cuts courtesy of a son who won’t be voting for his dad, a master dribbler and presidential widow. Sounds presidential. Streets get told they can continue to play dirty. Juciy. Come on parties. Who’s next to campaign. Where are the biblical boys – drunk King Solomon and aging Methesulah? Both share the fact that on the streets they rapidly went from hero to zero in days. Except King Solomon doesn’t know it yet… Where’s NAREP? Speak up all little parties! Time to talk to Zambia. We are listening to ALL. So at least try and pretend to care (wink…

    • …wink PF)

After all the candy promises are in – what is left for others to promise, huh? Seems like our first contender is reading from the Sata rule book and has picked up a trick or two. A little Malcolm X remix of By Any Means Necessary… Whatever it Takes

Now where are NAREP? Come on guys. Tweeting about rappers all day is not going to bring the bacon home. Leave the self love til after you’ve achieved something. Get on that podium, hit a few provinces and enjoy the fact that the bigger boys are b’*tch slapping each other in to oblivion and by the time they remember they are supposed to be talking to voters (who have been watching the hissy fits), they will have lost many votes (and hearts) to you smaller guys.

Juicy times. Come on little parties. Go grow your votes!

  6. “COPY & PASTE” SATA’S MANIFESTO. THIS MAN IS JUST PARROTING SATA’S UTTERANCES. THESE PROMISES ARE WHAT GOT PF INTO POWER. HE IS “PARROTING” AND EVERYONE IS SAYING “AYE THIS IS THE MAN”!!!! PITY..

    • @question

HH did not say he will do it in one year. He has big job of reorganising the government to make it efficient first and then begin to work on those things he has promised. One year is not enough to clean up PF ‘s three years mess.

  7. Allow street vendors to remain on the streets, reduce electricity prices? Something rubbed off Sata onto this man when they were in alliance. This is exactly 90 day promises,.
    1. Sata promised to eliminate load shedding and it is worse now, HH promises to reduce electricity prices – same promise repackaged.
    2. Sata promised to keep vendors on the streets, HH is parroting that – does he know that this promide will triple the number of street vendors? dies he know the implications on health and diseases?
    3. what other similarities? wait for the next rally on copperbelt!

I am disappointed, but not shocked as I always believed that HH will turn out the same as Sata. He was tutored by Sata. In fact he is the most suitable person to carry on Mr Sata’s “vision”.

    • Reducing electricity tariffs is practical seeing that ZESCO makes huge profits already. The company will still function. Load shedding is another ball game.

Sata said he would remove the street vendors, but changed his mind after being in office hoping to secure 2016.

If Sata was here he would rally behind HH as no one cares for him in PF. Look at what is happening.

  8. …..PF should not waste time wrangling, here is a clean successor. And Dr Kaseba? Please step aside, mourn in peace now, your worries about the “vision” are sorted out!

  9. UNIVERSITY & COLLEGE FREE….WHERE IS HH GOING TO GET THE MONEY..COPY AND PASTE SATA MANIFESTO.BE REAL HH.WE ARE WATCHING,EL NEXT PRESIDENT.

    • No not

Free education to University level is practiced in Germany and other eastern European countries, China, Australia etc..

We all benefited from free eduction in KK’s time. This has nothing to do with Sata. Didn’t his minister say it is not government responsibility to educate its people. He said nothing in response. So free education was not Sata’s vision.

    • Most PF manifesto was copied off UPND. HH did not agree with the 90days mantra and other things thats why he jumped off the pact.

On vendors read the true version on my comments above.

  10. With endorsements from VJ and Maureen, HH clearly has the cloud and can win this election if he galvanizes support in the Copperbelt.

    • As in Bible’s ‘cloud of witnesses’ or what cloud of job seekers aka supporters….or perhaps you meant ‘clout’?

That is why I always advocate for Plain English. And lawyers are notorious for legalise. So Goggle the Plain English Campaign and be free to adumbrate (oh…sorry…write) in plain English.

  11. HH might, I say might, be a good candidate, but I would deter from promising a land of milk & honey. The problems are many & 7 years might not be enough, also reduce your pride, to serve the people you need to be level headed, not authoritarian Mr Hichilema. This country is tired of fake campaign promises, vendors???? Not on my tax paid turf. Get real with your foreign sponsored campaigns.

  12. HH , u will have my vote. PF is useless ,they have failed to resolve their differences within the party , how can they be given a mandate again to govern the Nation. PF Party is full of selfish leaders and their vision is not to save the people of this great country, but themselves ,coz if their vision was to save the people of this Country ,they would have just Adopted a Presidential canditate than waisting time with their constitution procedures while HH and his clue are busy compaigning.PF will be a disgrace political party we have never had in the history of this country, coz it will be out of power before finishing it term of five years.

GUY SCOT-MUZUNGU ALIBE NZELU- u are just creating confusion in the party , u dont know what is good for u and the party.

  13. To be honestly frank, I am disappointed with HH from day one. His promises are not impressive. I have seen nothing in them to transform the country from poverty to prosperity. These are stereotype sweet sounding promises to hoodwink the naives with little capacity to understand let alone analyse issues who are unfortunately in the majority. He has forgotten that if elected in January he will find in place the PF budget which has not provided for those things he is promising. To me it appears he does not know how government operates. In addition as others have observed, he is making the same promises that Sata had been making while in opposition to get him to State House. I am worried for Zambia. We seem to be stuck in the mud.

  14. After demonising sata for the entire period of his rule HH’s desperation for power now makes him today adopted all the political messages of sata & after three years of his watchdog wishing sata dead with many of his MPs commending the site for that kind of reporting in parly, today he can such a callous as to even call fo a moment of silence. Abash pretense & hipocricy! . Unfortunately some of us know him too well we will not fall of these cheap politics he has employed. He doesn’t believe in many of the things he is parroting 2de, sata believed in them

  15. On street vendors, that is a wrong move. it will cost him in future. Remember in chiluba’s time there was even vendors desk at state house just for a few months, but one evening he sent soldiers to clean the streets. the streets are filthy Mr HH..Please don’t make promises to street vendors

  16. Viva HH Viva! Viva UPND Viva! This is what we call political maturity. HH has matured indeed. This is the political language, and this is the political message that people want to hear from a politician. The package is good my Man! Please make sure that you repeat this same message where ever you go to hold campaigns. This is exactly what the voters want to hear. Get ready for FLIGHT HH 20 JANUARY 2015!

    • This man is just copying the message of Sata, the only difference is that Sata believed in what he was saying and this man doesn’t believe in what he is talking about. He is telling the people what they want to hear which I feel if not handled well might explode in his face.

  17. Any sane and rational politically enlightened individual cannot vote for a political party aspiring to govern Zambia with dysfunctional structures within itself. The hidden cracks have finally been exposed. Thanks to Sata’s demise.

Mr HH form the new government without recycled politicians.I would’nt want the same ideas to govern my country .These obsolete individuals are looking for jobs. They’re in a hurry to be in government and all there is to benefit. That is why they keep ignoring their own intra-party constitutions.

  18. Very easy to convince the vendors, simply telling them you will not temper with their source of livelihood you win their support and now HH is doing just that. He has finally learnt that in politics you tell poor people what they want to hear and once in power you exactly the opposite. Good work and the messages are getting heard and winning the votes.

  19. How old is Andrew Banda? He looks older than his own father RB, is it because of poverty or stress hit him so bad?

    • Is this the Andrew Banda that was accused and convicted of something? So how come now he is a good guy and accepted by the UPND. Polytricks are really polytricks!

    • This guy has to-date, not refunded GRZ for fake quotations and subsequent receipt of payment for supply of Radar equipment for the airport.

  20. Good move HH. Lets dupe these vendors that we shall not remove them from the streets and build them trading places once in power. At the moment your attack should be health, farmers and high cost of leaving. Yes we need infrastructure but not at the accelerated rate the PF wants to do these because the lack basic understanding of balancing things.

    • Desperate monde, your job is on the chopping board.

If HH wins, 10 appointed MPs will go and he will appoint his own reducing PF ‘s number to 70. Then he will get business done with MMD and UPND MPs plus 10 extra UPND appointed MPs.

    • HH will give us a new constitution and that alone is a reason worth voting him in. With a people driven constitution, all else we desire in our leaders fall in place. If he doesn’t deliver by 2016, we boot him out and arrest him and he will be in power for only one year. If we vote PF, they will get another $5billion kaloba to try and impress us without giving us a new constitution.

  21. PF should be given a rude shock come January 2015 because they have too much pride. many feel that whoever stand on they PF ticket will win they elections that is why they have too many disturbances everyone wants to be president. let us wake up Zambia this war in PF will never end even after their convention things will be worse. HH is the way to go

    • What is your basis of this shallow analysis? Why would you dream that people can vote for HH when PF is delivering development to them? Simple but painful questions.
Zambians have tasted development only under PF and they shall never trade their luck to anyone that’s why they want Edgar Lungu. Experienced, young trusted and knows what PF means to the people of Zambia.
Who are the advisors to HH please mwebantu? Let them be fair to him, no chance to rule Zambia chalipwa…..
PF for ever. Ubwatooo is sailing strong and steady…

  22. This is where PF have scarred Zambia for life. Every politician now think they can say whatever people want to hear. HH is a young chap but his mentality says otherwise. People want a clean and orderly city, we want a vibrant education system not one dependant on government hand-outs, we want law and order and quite frankly you are promising more of the same. Sata really did some serious damage to this country. I’m disappointed with your pledges, I expected more from a young man like HH. Look at the presidents of Kenya or Tanzania, these guys are more in tune with the modern world hence the rapid development in their economies. HH needs to show a level of sophistication to convince the rest of us that he means business. Leave the lies to PF.

  23. Firstly, I would want to differ with people who are saying H.H cannot rule Zambia. This is what was also said of SATA, and he surprised many. Sata passed through it all. And with what is happening in P.F, H.H seems to be the front runner to the presidency. It is most likely than ever that he will be our President. As a patriotic Zambian, I am ready to be ruled by him, even though I had given my vote to P.F last time.
I would want to tell him not to just excite people but say how he is going to do things. What if Street vending becomes a nuisance? Where is he going to get the money for the reduced price of things. Don’t promise heaven, but say how you ll go about it. Same as changing things in 90 days promise by P.F. We don’t want promises, but policies. Fed up with promises; say…

    • No one is saying that HH cannot rule Zambia. Recently we had a clown for a President. It is one thing to be a President and another to be a good President who would provide the needed leadership to move the country from poverty to prosperity. Truly speaking we did not expect the crap he is reported to have said yesterday to come from him. We looked forward to something of substance not substandard claims he is reported to have said. He is an intellectual, a professional and a businessman. He is not from the dust bin like the PF riff-raffs. We shall not spare him from the word go. We are looking to him to save this country which is not a kraal. We do not want him to let intellectual young class down. We want him to perform like Mwanawasa did. We do not want mediocrity from him but the best.

  24. HH represents ‘Perestroika’ in Zambia and Zambian politics.
LT reportage is misrepresenting facts of HH to the nation.
HH says will restructure, transform, realign and reset the economic strategy that was quickly collapsing under PFrule. This change in attitudes, ideas and in practice will entails radical alteration on all previous regimes particularly PF (CNP) strategies in order to dock and use modern complexity management tools to finally deliver services to Zambians. This is no 90 day gimmick but realistic rhetoric, eg 2016 elections to be held under new constitution-Yes, can Mushota support me plse. Thanks

  25. Ukutangila tekufika iyo. This rally was a launch and all UPND carders were ferried to it remember? Tell people how you will create employment and not dreaming.
Once PF resolves its internal issues, you will never see these people again. PF will campaign on real and tangible developmental achievements in two years and win easily. I pit HH because up to now he hasn’t grown up.
HH is using the PF 2011 campaign messages to seek the votes but the question is why go to someone who is promising when the originator is delivering on the same?
UPND has no direction and lets face it. PF is the party now until 2017. Its not easy to remove a working Government never not in Africa. The same Mwaanga and Maureen have predited victory for PF so deceiving UPND, ha ha ha…
    Edgar Lungu, PF big WIN…

  26. HH says he is an economic manager, fine let him show the people what he has achieved for the people and where. Secondly, a President’s job is not to manage the economy but to provide able leadership for his Government. If a president wants to manage your resources, just know you are doomed.

Management of a country’s resources is job for the private and public managers; a president gives direction. I have never heard this from this liar called HH.
Anyway, 20th Jan is near the corner and the masters (people) know who to trust- Rhetoric or performer?
    Viva PF pa bwatoooo…

    • @Bottom Road,
You are wrong to think that president’s job in not to manage the economy of Zambia. The Job of president is not to mismanage Zambia’s economy. We want president like HH who can create real wealth in economy and not your ru-bi-sh belief.

  27. What is your basis of this shallow analysis? Why would you dream that people can vote for HH when PF is delivering development to them? Simple but painful questions.
Zambians have tasted development only under PF and they shall never trade their luck to anyone that’s why they want Edgar Lungu. Experienced, young trusted and knows what PF means to the people of Zambia.
Who are the advisors to HH please mwebantu? Let them be fair to him, no chance to rule Zambia chalipwa…..
PF for ever. Ubwatooo is sailing strong and steady…

  28. Reasonable cloud indeed. We hope it wil be the same in Northern, Luapula, Muchinga and the Copperbelt. Come 20th January wina azalila. HH will throw in a towel after this one. Wait for the Pf candidate.

  29. Is that Mrs. HH in the red chitambala sitting nest to HH? If Kaseba is voted to stand on the PF ticket, Maureen will tear her apart, just listen to Maureen’s innuedos, am not a doctor I did not know what was happening to my husband (Levy) what more a doctor (Kaseba). I have stayed away from politics for 6 years (Maureen) Watch this space.

  30. Please HH,donch ifwo! We need sanity and order in our towns. Lusaka is the filthiest capital city in Africa.something needs to be done and I thought you would be thee man but you sound like king cobra-be original sale us YOUR vision no donchi kubeba

  31. Those promises are made every year and HH loses bad. Even this time HH is losing for the fourth time. The man was against street vending how come now he is supporting it? Really desperation makes people do the “undoable”.

  32. HH for 2015, its high time as Zambians we stand and vote for UPND as the only party that has future and good realistic manifesto, even people who are surrounded by HH are people who are counted n the society. HH2015 flight

  33. HH says something good and you get encouraged. Then in the same breath he spoils everything by allowing street vendors to stay where they are (and by implication he does not mind more, as that is how the vendors and would be vendors will read the statement). You can get the votes fron street vendors but you will lose those from other concerned citizens.
Then he touches on electricity tariffs in a way that suggests he is out of touch with reality.
One wonders whether these guys have done their research at all? If they have done their research and understand the situation, then they are only posturing to gain votes. In which case all the other promises by HH yesterday can be taken as largely posturing to gain votes. Typical of Sata’s donchi kubeba, and we are talking of young blood!

  34. Have a plan in place to move vendors from the street! The towns are filthy. It is folly to make populist pronouncements without being pragmatic. The election will be a walk in the park if you can address price of mealie meal, fuel, college bursaries, improvement of health facilities so Zambians don’t have to go abroad for treatment. The PF liars and corrupt tribalists must not be returned to power on January 20!
