Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo has expressed disappointment at the manner in which Zambia National Broadcasting Cooperation (ZNBC) board has handled the matter where some government officials allegedly harassed ZNBC news room staff.
Mr Kasolo said ZNBC should have followed the laid down procedure set by his ministry which is responsible for ZNBC and the appointing authority of its board members.
He said the grievances that were raised had been noted but however challenged the ZNBC board to file in their complaints to the ministry so that they could be addressed.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr Kasolo pointed out that it was not right to go public with matters that could be sorted out internally.
Mr Kasolo also urged the public media to research and seek guidance from his ministry before broadcasting or publishing sensitive statements being issued by politicians.
Yesterday ZNBC board chairman John Mulwila was aired on ZNBC main news condemning some named senior government and party officials who allegedly harassed newsroom staff and ordered them against using stories of other politicians with contrary views.
Meanwhile Mr Kasolo has refuted reports that he directed ZNBC not to cover certain political parties.
He said he was in office to uphold professionalism and to ensure that the media carries out its mandate professionally especially during this election period.
Mr Kasolo reiterated the need for political parties to have specific contact persons with the media.
