The People’s Party and the All People’s Congress Party have withdrawn their support for UPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema.
The two political parties along with the Alliance for Democracy and Development on Tuesday announced that they will support Mr Hichilema for the January 20 2015.
But People’s Party President Mike Mulongoti who spoke on behalf of the two political parties at a news briefing said they have not yet settled on any candidate within the opposition alliance MMD, People’s Party and All People’s People’s Congress or indeed the alliance.
“Our criteria as an alliance is that we are desirous of a presidential candidate who can demonstrate competence experience, honesty, genuine inclusiveness and maturity in the manner and style of campaigning,” Mr Mulongoti said.

He said, “We think that a repeat of another deceitful and tainted political campaign such as the one that ushered the Patriotic Front erroneously into government should never be entertained again, all political leaders offering themselves for office must endeavour to present achievable minimum programmes of action such as the delivery of a new republican constitution and the establishment of the rule of law. Therefore, all candidates must resist the temptation of encouraging lawlessness just in a bid to get elected.
Mr Mulongoti added, “Whilst we encourage and embrace electoral pacts and alliances, these should be genuinely driven and based on a mutually agreed upon programme to save our people opposed to rallying around individuals and personalities.”
He said in the mean time, consultations are ongoing and the nation will be informed when the appropriate candidate ?is identified to undertake the transitional period leading to the holding of credible free and fair elections slated for 2016 under a new and democratic constitution.”

I think we will never fully develop as Zambians if we continue to live as we are. HH should not just play to the tune of voters but be realistic in his promises. Take the issue of illegal structures for instance. Yes I agree the demolition exercise by PF was quite harsh but people need to learn to follow the proper guidelines when it comes to building structures. I believe endorsement are meaningful when they have significant weight thrown behind them. None of these chaps who endorsed HH’s candidacy have any meaningful following and none even have representation in Parliament. Its an exercise in futility. Now when the likes of MMD say that they will enter into an alliance with UPND, even with all their confusion, they have structures and representation, then such endorsements start to come to life.Otherwise, none of the endorsers are bringing votes to the table.
