A TOTAL of 299,710 out of 332,953 candidates who sat for Grade Seven examinations this year have been selected to Grade Eight.

Minister of Education John Phiri told Parliament that 152,985 boys and 146,725 girls sat for the exams, representing an increase in the national progression rate from 89.3 percent last year, to 90 percent.

A total of 367,967 candidates entered to sit for the 2014 examinations but only 332,953 candidates sat for the examinations due to a number of factors.

In a ministerial statement yesterday, Minister of Education, Science, Dr Phiri said the highest progression rate was recorded in Western Province at 99.8 percent while the lowest progression rate was recorded in Lusaka Province at 75.1 percent with Luapula Province recording 100 per cent progression rate for girls.

He said there was a reduction in absenteeism rates from 11.3 percent last year to 9.2 per cent this year.

“In absolute figures, a total of 35,014 candidates were absent from the examination, of whom 17,451 were boys and 17,563 were girls. It is also gratifying to announce that all the 10 provinces recorded a reduction in absenteeism, with the lowest rates recorded in Southern Province,” Dr Phiri said.

He said the selection of next year’s Grade Eight pupils would make it possible for the entrants to report to their respective schools together with the rest of the non-examination classes in January next year.

“I wish to commend the new Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) board and management for turning things around at the council. Working together with my ministry officials at all levels has shown utmost efficiency in processing the 2014 Grade seven examination which culminated into early selection of the 2015 learners,” the minister said.

“Schools across the country will start to issue results by November 28 but parents wishing to know results before collecting official statements may use the ‘sms results release system’ offered by ECZ but only available to Zamtel subscribers,” he said.

  1. Its a crime not to have a 100% progression. All pupils must get into grade 8 and subsequently to grade 12.Therefore,what is the use of these grade 7 and grade 9 exams? They both need scrapping and replaced by IQ tests.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

    • i agree with you 100 %,education should not be meant for survival of the fittest.Every citizen of any country has an inert right to education. Here n the US even the worst of worst kids are helped to get education till graduation. But in Zed,you either have to be insanely smart or rich to academically succeed.

    • What a misleading headline! Luapula province didn’t have a 100% progression rate. Lusaka Times please learn to report the truth. Luapula only received a 100% progression rate for GIRLS.

The highest progression rate was achieved by WESTERN PROVINCE at 99.8%

    • Luapula 100%, well done. The fish is doing wonders.

‘KWESU KWALI WAMISHA UKO TULYA IMINOFU YA MBOWA, ABA NSENGA BALI CHULA BATOBELA IMICHILA YA MBEBA.’

Don’t insult me you easterners. Am a mixture of so many tribes so i take a swipe at anyone and everyone.

  2. With HH coming even the boys will achieve 100% next year. The thieving ones from Luapula are the old useless politicians from there like witchcraft Kats disappearing Kalumba. You make us proud girls. A abash PF for thieves prostitutes and evil. Well come HH

    • What the hell @Cat Power, not all of us from Luapula are thieves, not all witches. But with those 100 %, one can think like fya ku bantu. If there is witchcraft to pass exams, then votes will be walk over. 102 % for HH.

    • Ok Bakamba we have not been represented well in the past, truthfully, we also had high fairer rate. Fact. I think it’s HH fever, true my grand farther never stole. We just fished at Mwense.

    • @Nostradamus
Cat power aleyangala na bena Luapula. Ta monapo lightening without rain in June or an earthquake just centered on your house. Witchcraft is practiced everywhere, even in Southern province so just drop it already. Relax Cat, don’t make it so obvious that you dont like Northerners, you are just de-campaigning yourselves. My question is this, if you can hate and segregate Northerners like this while you are still in the opposition, what will happen when you come into power? We may have the 1994 Rwanda genocide here in our country. Try to be positive, it may surprise you what a positive attitude towards other people can achieve.

  3. @cat power you see your hatred against the North? Don’t complain when your presidential candidate terribly fail from North. Why do you technically decampaign your candidate by insulting people with majority vote? We better vote for a flog than enemies we know

  4. #Cat_Power behave yourself, you are an adult. Don’t you know that even in Southern Province there is witchcraft? You are just decampaigning yourself, the problem is that the behaviour of you UPND cadres is very appalling. Why do you hate people from the Northern corridor? This is the main problem I can’t vote for HH because as a Bemba I will not have it easy when HH and the entire Tongas ascend to the helm of this great country. I have to look for an alternative now that people who have high levels of intellect like #Cat_Power can sink so low and insult the people from the Northern block who are the majority voters. HH, you have lost my vote!

  5. Does the different cut off pass which was different between provinces still apply? I know that the pass mark in one province was 700 points and above while in another it was 550 points.

  6. Some people from Southern Province need their heads examined. They spend time on the net to insult Northerners. Do they surely think the Northerners will vote for them or their HH after being insulted day and night? Southern Province has no numbers and anyone to become president needs the Northern numbers. Continue insulting them and see if your HH will move from 0.xxx% in the previous elections in Northern Province.
