Chief Nkana lashes out at investors for not ploughing back in the community

Chief NKana of the Lamba speaking people of Lufwanyama district has lashed out at investors in his Chiefdom for not ploughing back into the community.

Speaking when Copperbelt Permanent Secretary, Howard Sikwela, paid him a visit at his palace today, chief Nkana stated that there is no reason for his chiefdom to lag behind in infrastructural development, as it has a lot of investors.

Chief Nkana, however, noted that despite having big investors such as Kagem Emerald Company among others, the chiefdom still lacks proper roads and clinics.

The traditional leader complained that the poverty levels in his chiefdom were still very high, adding that his people have not in any way benefited from the presence of Emerald Mining Companies in the area.

And Copperbelt Permanent Secretary, Howard Sikwela, said it is imperative for investors to ensure that they improve the quality of life for communities they have invested in.

Rev Sikwela stated that investors make a lot of money, adding that there is no reason for them not to take corporate social responsibility seriously.

  1. Rev Sikwela,
The contract with the investors needs to be in writing.
18 months ago, Helen Zulu, a journalist with the Times of Zambia interviewed a mining consultant in London. He advocated that 20% of a mine’s profit needs to be ploughed back into the community (the host). Mining companies, through the Chamber of Mines, did not like that. They bribed Times of Zambia to remove the article from their web site Luckily, Allafrica.com and many newspapers in the mid-west of the USA are still carrying the article. 20% of profits need to go back to the community for infrastructure development, otherwise, when the minerals are depleted, all that will remain is a hole in the ground!
