MINISTER of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Yamfwa Mukanga says 2014 has seen infrastructure growth of up to 17.5 percent countrywide, describing it as a year of productivity.

Singling out the Link Zambia 8000 road project, Mr Mukanga said 24 projects representing 2,630 kms are under construction.

Mr Mukanga said out of these, 1,283 kms have been tarred.

Mr Mukanga said a project of the Link-Zambia 8000 magnitude will transform Zambia’s road system.

He said this project will open up Zambia to neighbouring countries and convert it from being land-locked to a land-linked nation.

He was speaking at the 2014 Meet the Minister dinner hosted by the National Council for Construction (NCC) in Lusaka on Friday evening.

Mr Mukanga said the Link Zambia 8000 Project should be supported by all well-meaning citizens.

He said 87.23kms representing 21 percent of roads in Lusaka have also been constructed and will be commissioned soon.

On the national tolling programme, Mr Mukanga said phase one, which targets big vehicles, is progressing well, adding that phase 2 of the programme, which will rope in smaller vehicles, is scheduled for launch in 2015.

    • Link Zambia 8000 of Nsanda, will not be completed before Jan 20th. You can continue commissioning roads which are incomplete.

    • Hope these Programs are well reviewed than just doing things for a tick in the box. The toll gate program should be properly studied to avoid human dependence and stealing the cash.

Don’t have faith in some of the Zambian projects. too much theft.

    • I’m trying to take you seriously…

Have we become so used to putting up with mediocrity that even our aspirations have lowered drastically?

The speed at which South Africans are putting up structures and sucking out $1m per day figures while we walk around with begging bowls, unable to take management of our own assets and resources is simply stunning. We suck up any extra penny the poor have and expect them to suck it up forever.

Yes I like any signs of progress even those that are just continuations of other attempts but dammit we deserve better. Just step aside and let someone else make sense of 50 years of damage. The deterioration and lack of maintenance culture in Zed will kill projects like this dead if hands don’t get out of the cookie jar. Enough already.

    • PF wants us to see only one side of the coin – the infrastructure side. They don’t want us to know how much, of the billions of dollars they borrowed from the International Bond Market, they have pocketed away. Their philosophy is to keep money in their pockets – not in their bank accounts, lest we know. PF are architects of corruption. They would rather we remain in the dark as to how much money is in their pockets while we continue to feed on husks and wallow in abject poverty. Enough of this.

  1. yes link Zambia 8000 must countnou eventhough the big man who intiated it is no more.
nowanda we cant risk giving power to boys who are un experienced coz they might mess up the good foundation that our great leader MCS laid before us.
i know someone will argue bcoz they dont move around the country to see how greaful peope are and how this roads projects av made life easy for them.

    • Yes, the infrastructure development must continue regardless of who takes over. KK was only 39 years 8 months when he became President and much younger when he became Prime Minister BUT he did so much more than the colonial government. A new more energetic leader who respects democracy and rule of law will even do more than installing people who have such a strong affinity for violence. We want the peace and tranquility we enjoyed in the first 5 years of Chiluba and MMD. It is possible.

    • I bet those people would be even more grateful for all the basics we take for granted.

I am a big believer in infrastructure but also accountability. Look at the pavement initiative in Lusaka. I walked on that poor excuse of a pavement which is handy because it is there but it is clear someone scrimped on the quality because it was cracked all over the place and won’t make it to even the 18 month mark.

And if you complain… the politicians just grin and tell you how well they are doing some place else with something else while the people responsible for the maintenance mumble something about contractual clauses and no money in the budget…

  2. The project was just masked in a different name but it was inititiated by the MMD and Infact under Chiluba. The man was close to Chiluba and picked these ideas. I can only thank you for trying to implement FTJs idea. However, we also know that the common denominator between the then initiators and the now implemented is PLUNDER.

    • How about universities.? They were also started by FTJ? How about the tolls also started by FTJ? Come on call a spade a spade.

  3. 17.5 % infrastructure growth and 300% debt growth.

When Zambians have to pay back this kaloba they will wake up and realise it was just a scam to steal their money!

  4. Only a gullible cadre can take utterances of this imbecilic minister seriously….for him provided anything is built regardless of price or lack of innovation it ticks the box. Link 8000 is a waste of our little resources. ..there is no value engineering implemented in these contracts….its just corruption via Nsanda’s proxy companies and the ruling elite. We need a commission of Inquiry to look into how most of the tenders were awarded.

    • Don’t call the minister ‘imbecile’. This is what is making ati balemiponona and you go crying that I have done no wrong.
Continue and the obvious will happen to you = beatings you will receive.

  5. So imwe ba UPND u cant see anything progressive in the infrastructural progress of this PF period ???
but you are able to quickly notice wen your cows are multiplying ??
We are not voting for HH period . Naowine kanshi tamona, kano nga ma cows.

  6. UPND chaps wake up and smell the coffee. HH will soon come out and say once UPND comes into power they will complete the link zambia projects. Still under 5 to me. PF stays in power. Call all PF supporters names all you want but HH will never rule.

    • Link 8000 is funded by taxpayers irrespective of party afflication….when are you narrow minded cadres going to wake up!!

  7. Any country that has developed in the long-term in the emerging market cater gory , has developed on solid well structured infrastructural projects with long-term support towards the flipping of the economy positively
Work on the MFEZ and avoid them being a cluster as stand alone with amenities and services well planned to avoid cities becoming littered and waste management and sewerage services issues clearing planning and knowing the succession planning of these MFEZ also
The maintenance budget also on these roads and other Infrastructural projects and creating capacity within to manage will be helpful, like Gov. Complex and other through Ministry works

    Keep it up

  8. EVEN THE PRORIFILATION OF REAL ESTATE HOUSING UNITS NEEDS TO BE CHECKED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE THAT THEY FEED INTO THE LOCAL ARMENITIES SUCH AS WATER AND ELECTRICITY TO ENSURE ORDERLY AND SANITARY DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY FOR FUTURE RATES AND CITY PLANNING AS WELL AS ADMINITRATION PURPOSES

IF A REAL ESTATE IN AN MFEZ TYPE HAS TO DO ISOLOLATED SEWER WATER GROUND BOREWHOLES AND ELECTRICITY RETICULATION ,THEY HAVE TO BE SOME RECOURSE TO CITY PLANNS AND WATER TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY NOT IN ISOLATION ITS SHOULD BE WITHIN THE CITY SYSTEMS TO AVOID LOSSES DUE TO CLUSTER HOUSING UNITS WITHOUT FEEDIN THE ARMENITIES

  9. PF are out of their minds. The flavor of the meat they have been roasting in the dark has filled the air. They cannot be trusted with anything worthwhile. They are drug addicts and crack heads. Keep them at bay in the forth coming presidential by-election.

  10. It is clear PF told lies about certain issues but they have done well and on a good track on infrustructure development in the country. No wonder even HH recently confessed that he will continue the projects started by the PF govt. Roads are important and affect to the positive development of the country. Where there is no road, there is development really. We shall vote for EL Classico and A luta continua!
