HH says better economic management needed to free up resources for investment in services

Crowd at UPND Kitwe Rally

Thank you to everyone who showed up for our rally in Freedom Park, Kitwe yesterday. Together with my colleagues and alliance partners including Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, Lunte MP Felix Mutati, Former Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane, ADD President Charles Milupi, UPND Chairperson Mutale Nalumango, UPND Vice President Dr Canisius Banda and Independent Lubansenshi MP Patrick Mucheleka, we addressed the crowds.Today there will be rallies in Mufulira and Ndola as we continue to campaign on the Copperbelt.

Every time I visit the Copperbelt I am always struck by the fact that despite the wealth the region is home to, many people are struggling, from youths who can’t find work or access the right training opportunities, to retired miners who do not have sufficient means to support themselves and their families in their old age. Then there are issues like bad sanitation that affect everyone, no matter how old or young they are, and have knock on impacts for health in particular.

Over the past few weeks we have set out an ambitious agenda to address these problems and for moving Zambia forward. I believe this is achievable, but we can only make this happen if we have better economic management by government.

We need to get serious about the economy if we want to have money to improve sanitation, build more roads and invest in education and healthcare all at the same time. We need a government that understands that and is ready for action.

It doesn’t make sense to me that there is currently so much government waste while at the same time we are lacking money to invest in our country and our people.

We can stop this waste by slimming down government, and ensuring that people are appointed based on merit and professionalism, not connections or relationships. We can also cut down on waste by awarding government contracts through open procedures whereby the contractor is selected on the basis of best value for money; by investing in sectors that will in turn deliver growth; and by making intelligent deals with investors. Finally, we can cut waste by stopping this trend of by-election after by-election.

A critical part of this is making sure we are smarter about how we use our natural resource wealth and what deals we make with investors. Firstly, we need to make sure we are always receiving enough in return for the extraction of our natural resources in terms of jobs, revenues and investment. Secondly government needs to use the revenues it collects from the mines to invest in areas that will improve the general living conditions of the Zambian people, such as sanitation, education and healthcare.

The resources and potential are here beneath our feet. It we don’t get serious about better economic management soon then not only will we fail to meet our great potential, but the Zambian economy will remain dependent on debt and vulnerable to fluctuations in commodity prices such as copper.

  1. LT is being generous to Campaign 01 today. I saw the PF wedding pics yesterday. Did we skip the reception and go straight to honeymoon? Coz Campaign 01 seems to be the only functioning campaign out there and they still make sense.

    • You are right Team HH is campaigning whilst PF are planning on how they will rig.

This HH talks sense everytime he opens his mouth. I don’t blame LT for priotizing UPND after all Lungu is busy with what he knows best.

      Viva #FlightHH2015 & 2016.

    • Shotgun weddings are always messy, Pretty. No one sticks around to handle the shell fall and the couple are forced to acknowledge they share a baby neither one actually wants to raise with the other in the picture. Add fighting family to the equation and the honeymoon is soon over. Chuckle.

    • HH has been consistent on economic issues, lets give him and his team to transform our enormous potential to prosperity. Edgar Lungu a drunk, with no vision and a shameless copycat…..

    • Its true. In zambia people support political parties the way people suport football. They don’t listen to what candidates say, or believe in or what they can change or ever do. In Zambia, Pipo including myself will vote for Edgar Lungu not because we love him, or he is better than even that poor president, we will vote because he is standing on PF, the party that liberated us from the shackles of MMD. Young HH is dreaming

    • Dont usher monkey in a maize field. Have you forgoten how he privatised zambian companies. What lungu did was pick pockenin compared hh. They both have issues but one is bigger the other.

    • These international investors are a scam,

      Kagem Mining ltd in kitwe have been scamming the government since 2002; In every emerald auction held by the mine, the high quality stones are put aside and sold under the table to Indian buyers from the city of jaipur and the sale is not recorded; even when the company is having an auction outside Zambia, only 3.5 million dollars of emerald sales are recorded and taxed while another 7 million dollars worth of product is smuggled out of zambia illegally and the sales of these emeralds are not taxed or recorded in their books of accounts;

ask the directors responsible, Mr Govind Gupta and Mr Lewanika; all these illegal sales of stones have been going into their pokets

  3. @Kudos4, my man !! Leave the LT site REST A while Flight2015HH is about to take OFF.
    All YOUR comrades ve disappeared!

NO MATTER what, EL will NEVER BE A PRESIDENT FOR this COUNTRY.

Sata died so tht we can correct the MISTAKE we made in 2011. Xaviour Chungu may TRY HIS level BEST but he cant FIGHT God.

Eastern, Northern, CopperBelt have all become UPND’s strongholds they r in UPND’s pocket.

    • Kudos is Katondo Boys paid to blogg continuously……he could be reincarnation of the insulting Saulosi aka Mushota, Gen, Luapula Premier.

He is an incorrigible., bitter..,abusive.., tribalist supremacist..,…scared,…, intemperate…,…panga culture…,….condescending..,,…insulting. an assassin.

  4. I thought hh was coming with new blood but looking at the bunch of mmd crowding him leaves much to be desired….viva lungu.

    • @gregoli: your *****cy knows no boundary. Ing’ombe Ilede is a beautiful historical village, settled aeons before your ancestors were jumping from tree to tree in Kola.

  5. VIVA HH. Questions?

    (1) What has Lungu done in the past in either his private or public capacity?

Sata at least showed something worth to vote for and do not regret have voted for PF with Sata. But currently I do not see anything inspiring in what Lungu has done either in his private capacity or public office apart from being left with instruments of power.

I therefore do not understand what inspires some people to say Lungu can lead the country. I challenge any blogger to show me what Lungu has done to deserve a vote on 2o Jan. It is only that group of thugs surrounding him who have portrayed him like he is a popular candidate for their own bellies. Please vote wisely.

  6. Dont count those people as votes. Grow up. Have nt you heard of the donchi kubeba slogan. Those are the same people that attended pf rally.

  7. Yes Sir, Mr. Hichilema, sir.

You win EVERYTHING today sir, and it’s still only morning in the US of A!
Have yourself and your family a great Sunday!

We, your extended family look forward to hearing more of your progressive ideas. All the time. Any time.

  8. Good message. Yes the resources and potential are here beneath our feet.
For example, we need many ‘mini ZAMEFAs’ in the Copperbelt instead of selling off nearly all our raw Copper to other Countries like China (cottage industries) only to turn around buy finished copper based products from the same China. Why?

Imagine the number of businesses and jobs that can be created locally, and the increased Tax base created for Govt, if we made household switches, circuit breakers, electric motors, sim cards, etc… Why disproportionately give these jobs and potential tax revenue to China? We should question ourselves why we do what we do to that scale.

Govt should work towards incentivising these small ZAMEFAs. It can be done.
