ACTING President Guy Scott has pardoned former minister of Defence George Mpombo and former deputy Minister of Youth and Sport Stephen Masumba and immediately released them from prison.
Commissioner of Prisons Percy Chato said in an interview yesterday that Dr Scott has pardoned Mr Masumba and Mr Mpombo under a presidential amnesty.
“The Acting President has constitutional powers to commute the remainder of the sentences as a gesture for good behaviour while in custody,” he said.
Mr Chato said Mr Masumba was released yesterday from Mwembeshi Maximum Prison, while Mr Mpombo was released from Lusaka Central Prison commonly known as Chimbokaila.
He said Mr Masumba, who is Mufumbwe member of Parliament (MP), and Mr Mpombo are among the 10 prisoners released under presidential amnesty while the rest are from Kabwe female prison.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from Mr Masumba proved futile while Mr Mpombo’s phone was answered by his daughter, who said her father was driving and could not make a comment over his release.
Mr Mpombo was serving a 9-month jail sentence for theft by public servant, forgery and uttering a false document.
The three counts of forgery, uttering false documents and theft of public funds amounted to K18,000, which related to his failure to retire imprest.
In Mr Masumba’s case, the Lusaka High Court upheld a 12-month sentence slapped on him by the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court for using a fraudulent accounting diploma to get a job.

Masumba’s case was very serious, he doesn’t deserve to be released this soon! The boy is also very arrogant and has never shown any remorse for what he did. He still points his finger at other people including the judiciary for his incarceration and only Scott knows what good behavior the childish boy exhibited while in jail! Am sure even the Judges are not happy with this Muzungu who tends to have insatiable appetite for making wild decisions!

Any percuniarly advantage for PF will results in these two being rejailed once PF is voted out of power. Anyway these two criminals have no more influence where they come from as convicts. This is sad. That People who have been or are parliamentarians will get less punishment or will be pardoned too easily cast a dark cloud on the need to fight corruption, to deter the would be offenders among public leaders esp politicians. I concur. I think when it comes to corrupt Publc Servants it were better to relieve the President the powers to pardon such individuals.

Well, I guess it’s good Mr Masumba has been relieved for lying on his CV. But of course the most important thing was that he was a YOUNG man who had since moved on to represent his people. To destroy a young life is not good, but he has been saved by being taught a lesson which must serve him to never repeat his error and be clean handed in public office. Re arrest them and commit them back to prison after 24 days. There are just common dishonest criminals who do not serve Presidential pardon. Guy obviously has serious dementia issues and is not fit to act in that capacity.
UPND PETAUKE RALLY
My colleagues on the ground in Eastern Province have reported that Our beloved UPND held a rally in Petauke, and tried to have another one in Katete. They say two people from MMD a Mr. Miti Alexander and Lameck Mangani are getting money pretending to campaign for HH. I am told both rallies were not so good as PF and MMD supporters were allover and our members could not even manage to put posters although there were a few at Nyimba. Why are we allowing MMD rejects to become close to HH?
All these tribalsmen Ba HH should not be trusted, including Maureen Mwanawasa and company, they want kulya mali yesu kwamana. I am told HH is holding a rally in Chipata today. Eastern is so sealed with PF and MMD we just have to pray to God for this one…God be with great UPND!
