THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) yesterday started the voters’ card replacement exercise which will run until January 3.
The exercise is to enable the electorate have voters’ cards for use in the January 20, 2015 presidential election.
Voters who have either lost their cards or those whose cards are defaced or damaged are required to possess a police report, which the Zambia Police Service is issuing at no cost, and a green national registration Card (NRC).
ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna said in an interview that about 600 selected centres countrywide have been opened for the voters’ card replacement exercise.
Mr Akufuna said urban constituencies will have three centres each and rural ones will have four apiece.
“The voters who have either lost their cards or whose cards are damaged should take advantage of this week-long exercise as the exercise will not be extended beyond the stipulated time. The affected voters should not wait for the last minute,” Mr Akufuna.
The listed replacement centres for the seven constituencies in Lusaka are Chawama at Nyerere Community School, Chawama Basic School and Presbyterian Church.
In Kabwata, the exercise is being conducted at Kabwata community Hall, Chilenje community hall and Lilayi Basic School.
In Kanyama constituency, the exercise is at Twashuka Basic School, Chibolya Basic School and Linda Push Community Development, while in Lusaka Central, the exercise is being conducted at Northmead Basic School, Lusaka City Council peri-urban conference room (Civic Centre) and Prince Takamado Community School in Bauleni township.
In Mandevu, voters can have their cards replaced at Ngwerere Basic School, Mandevu community hall and Highland Basic School while in Matero constituency, the exercise is at Matero community hall, Namando Basic School and George Community Basic School.
In Munali constituency, the exercise is at Kalingalinga community hall, Chelstone community hall and Mumana Basic School.
Meanwhile, a 22-member delegation yesterday left for South Africa to monitor the printing of ballot papers for next year’s presidential election.
Mr Akufuna said the delegation comprises representatives from all the 11 political parties participating in the election, media, civil society organisations (CSO), church, faith based organisation and security wings.
He said the printing of ballots will commence as soon as all the concerned parties agree on the process.
