Nevers Mumba and MMD concedes defeat

MMD's Dr Nevers Mumba
MMD’s Dr Nevers Mumba

After looking at the results made available by the Electoral Commission of Zambia so far, it is clear that as the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, we have not made the grade in this election.

Nevertheless, I wish to congratulate our national campaign committee led by Hon Mwansa Mbulakulima and the entire membership of the party for demonstrating unequaled gallantry in the just ended electoral contest. We thank all those who contributed by way of funding, time and logistics to the campaign.

The results so far confirm that MMD’s path to full recovery lies in complete re-branding with new blood and new attitudes towards service to the nation. As MMD, we shall regroup and make the necessary decisions to take our party forward.

We congratulate the eventual winner and look forward to working together as we provide the necessary checks and balances. In conceding defeat, we wish to advise all our colleagues in the political fraternity to desist from anything which could bring instability and conflict in our nation. We urge the incoming President and Government to foster unity and reconciliation during this interim period before the 2016 election.

We urge the new administration to immediately get to work to give the Zambian people their constitution as soon as possible. As we stated during the Presidential debate, it is very unlikely to enact the new constitution before the 2016 elections because of the need for a referendum as a result of the amendment to the Bill of Rights.

A referendum requires planning, logistics, funding and sensitisation of the public in every district which is difficult to do in 18 months. We are aware that the PF has released a roadmap for the final phase of the constitution review process. However, the Zambian people still remember the PF legacy of dishonesty and unfulfilled “90 Days” promises. Zambians would do well to be sceptical of this roadmap and must be vigilant to hold the PF government accountable to their stated time-frames in the plan.

A more realistic, practical and result-oriented approach is the MMD position of immediately taking separate important bills to parliament in order to address the following issues before the 2016 elections:

  1. 50% + 1 electoral system
  2. Presidential running mate
  3. Reduction of the powers of the President
  4. Freedom of Information and improved press freedom
  5. The NGO Act
  6. Public Order Act
  7. Dual Citizenship
  8. Cabinet from outside Parliament
  9. Decentralization
  10. Preventing parliamentary defectors from contesting seats for the life of the parliament they are in

Only high levels of patriotism will help to navigate us through this 18 month transition time before the 2016 election, by which time we must have our people-driven constitution.

I thank you,

Nevers Sekwila Mumba
MMD President

    • Dr. Mumba leaves his best for the concession speech. All odds were against him but his foresight on the constitution is correct. His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will need to take separate bills to amnend the constitution before 2016. As for MMD, they now join UNIP, in the annuls of Zambia’s political history as former ruling political parties that failed to immediately bounce back. Dr. Mumba must the lead the party to a convention and mobilize resources for 2016 which will be a tall order.

    • Great efforts Dr Mumba! RB destroyed MMD after crying once, and twice he shall lament again with the visionless EL.

      Meanwhile, accurate results stand at:

      >HH~893,411

      >EL~712,343

Viva Hakainde Hichilema! By the end of the day, HH will be victorious over EL will a landslide victory. They will be a “national mourning” for PF and burial to be communicated by Emmanuel Mwamba aka Katongo Boys after the inauguration of HH viva the 6th President of Zambia!

The Skeleton Key with 206 bones going on strong.
Patiently waiting and watching as the revelations contained, as they shock the PF cadres.
Viva HH! Viva HH! Viva HH! Viva HH! Viva HH and Viva HH!

    • You have fought a good fight sir.Well done. Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.

    • Dr. Mumba,
Thank you for your wise words. You have already set yourself apart as one who is emotionally intelligent and a true leader. Good luck.
      Dr. Munanga

    • Remove dual citizenship from the above list as it offers no real benefit to 95% of Zambians who are unable to travel and settle in foreign countries long enough in order to qualify for dual citizenship.

    • Imwe bakalamba bwekwelenifye kuli Lesa, that’s what your calling is – by now you’d have been much bigger than TB JOSHUA!!!!

    • I hope this time round he will also keep to his word. Nevers is a sweet talker. Do you remember ‘there will be no vindictiveness?’ Next, he was firing Muhabi Lungu. Nevers is unstable. I will not be surprised if next week he joins a court case to petition the results.

    • @1.7 YOU 101% RIGHT THAT DUAL CITIZENSHIP WILL NOT BRING THE BENEFIT ANTICIPATED. HOWEVER, IT WILL JUST BRING A LOT OF ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS TO ZAMBIA AT EVEN A LARGER MAGNITUDE THAN IT DOES TO EVEN ECONOMICALLY POWERFUL COUNTRIES SUCH AS US, UK ETC. ZAMBIA HASN’T GOT THE ECONOMY OF SCALE TO CURB THE PROBLEMS BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE SAID. THE SIGNIFICANTLY MOST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES SUCH AS SOUTH KOREA, MALAYSIA ETC AREN’T EVEN DUAL CITIZEN. THEIR GOVTs ARE JUST DETERMINED IN FORMULATING GOOD ECONOMIC POLICIES THAT PROMOTE INNOVATION AMONGST THEIR CITIZENRY. ONE EXAMPLE COUNTRY WHICH SHOULD HAVE DEVELOPED LIKE MALAYSIA IS GHANA. WITH DUAL CITIZENSHIP GHANA IS VERY FROM FROM SIGNIFICANTLY BEING INDUSTRIALIZED.

    • Truth (16.10, that is where a Tonga has a problem. Arrogance and thinking Zambia is yours and yours only. Remove that dirty mentality from your minds and you will quickly rule. otherwise with that mentality , you will never rule Zambia because it is ours all of us including munyukunyukus like Guy Scott.

    • Mumba has done what has lacked in African politics for a very long time- conceeding and being gracious in defeat.

This guy is what Zambia needs in 2016 and beyond. He stands tall in political stature and diginified in his choice of words.

Precisely why don’t understand the Zambian way of voting. The two standing candidates are no where near Mumba’s pedigree.

I’m hopeful rational thinking individual will soon see things from my perspective.
Dr Mumba, we’ll support your reorganisation of your party for tomorrow’s democracy.

  1. You tried your best, but don’t waste more time in this arena….politics sometimes are not for people with good intentions…

    • I see Dr Nevers Mumba indirectly telling us that EL as our new
President must give as the new constitution before 2016 elections,
see how he mentions PF govt not UPND govt.

Mind you, i`m good at comprehension .

  2. Thats true mark of statemanship. The winner is Zambia not a particular group of individuals. May others follow. Don’t wait till your fake PVT tell otherwise.

    • @Bootlicker… I am surprised that you are also relying on compromised intel for your PVT results. The TIZ PVT tallies with what ECZ has so where is HH going to get the votes to overturn this clear upset…Looks like you are also using the DOGS fabricated reports….sorry. We will still celebrate…Viva EL Classico!

  3. Anyway, we were never in this election, clearly the MMD block either stayed home or moved with our RB to PF and I believe Edgar Lungu will become the first Zambian President to get a majority vote of 50+1 % after FTJ and all because of the MMD vote that RB pulled in for them.

Going forward, we need a convention to prpperly sort out our constitution and cleanse party. This year should be dedicated to making preparation for that.

All positions should be openly contested. We need to lead the way and no preferred sole candidates. We need to rebrand.

UPND have had their flash in a pan moment and are going nowhere. They are just addicted to lies and shallow thinking and beliefs. They wont be a factor in 2016. MMD need to step in strongly.

  4. Ba Doc you tried your best sir, there’s always a second time. Don’t lose hope. Make sure that you get rid of the lebel MPs now.

  5. You fought the battle Dr Mumba, even though I’m a die hard PF supporter I admire your perseverance but politics is a dog eat dog game..Rupiah did not do the honorable thing I admit, he should have stood by you and you too should have buried the hatchet as a Christian you should have practised what you preached and extended an open hand to Bwezani but your ego got the better of you sir. This is a lesson I think we can all learn from, Zambian politics is by far the most dynamic and democratic in Africa, the fact we are now having 5 Presidents since Independence bears testament to this so as is the case with any dynamic system never count anyone out.. just as HEMCS was written off after his first attempt but later after 3 attempts became President so to can you sir, keep the faith!!!

    • Just give Dr. Mumba credit. He has sold himself very well. A lot of us now understand him very, very well. Being a christian does not mean failure to stand up for your rights. Bwezani wanted to rape the MMD and as a christian Mumba stood up to defend and protect his family.
Sir (Dr. Mumba) Zambians salute you. Believe me, when Lungu fails, you are the choice for president. HH is a lost chapter. I wish we could have just three people of your caliber in our Zambian politics. Your participation in this election has surely strengthened MMD and the acts of Bwezani have helped you to identify patriotic members of your party.

    • Mumba did exactly what you are saying. He went to make peace with chi Bwezani after the court case but that corrupt man betrayed Nevers and MMD.

  6. Dnr. Mumba has been magnanimous in defeat. He took on an almost impossible task when he was elected President of MMD following the national rejection of Rupiah Banda. It is a shame that Rupiah Banda attempted the coup to steal Dr. Mumba ‘ s legitimate candidacy for President as the MMD candidate. Zambians will never forget that act of betrayal by the former president. Certainly the international community would have taken note that Rupiah Banda went back on his word. One has to question whether he can be referred to as a statesman. Dr. Mumba certainly ensured that the MMD survived after the late President did his best to ensure its demise and failed. He faced tremendous internal challenges yet stood his ground. The Supreme Court decision vindicated him. 2016 is just around the corner.

    • @Harambe, magnanimity is in victory. Dr Mumba has been gracious. The powerful become vindictive and mean in victory when they lack the magnanimous spirit and that is what we fear of a certain group vying for these elections. I am hoping the victor will deal with the vanquished in clear big-hearted magnanimity…

    • Lungu would humbly do so. Our worry is those arrogant, greedy, violent UPND who see stars where there are clouds. I always advised UPND – be humble! Well you’ve yourselves to blame for this loss. Even if people are encouraging you that 2016 is your – no, it isn’t. Arrogance is part of your DNA, just like tribalism is. People fear you – Tongas and UPND. Painful truth. Work on it. Go for a convention and elect leaders that will give UPND a national character. Not these appointments meant to hoodwink people!

  7. WE THANK YOU NM FOR ACCEPTING DEFEAT, NEXT IS HH IN HIS BITTERNESS AS WE KNOW HIM. PLEASE TELL YOUR CADRES TO ACCEPT DEFEAT, THERE IS ALWAYS NEXT TIME BUT I DOUBT FOR YOU IF NEXT TIME WILL COME!
    GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

    • WHEN IT SUITS YOU, YOU PREACH ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION, JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE DOMINATING OVER THE TONGAS, THE TRUE OWNERS OF ZAMBIA WHILE MOST OF YOU ORIGINATE FROM MALAWI, DRC AND TANZANIA. YOU ARE VERY STUPID. TONGA UPRISING IS COMING. BURIND AND RWANDA WENT TO WAR BECAUSE OF CIRCUMSTANCES. WHO TOLD YOU THAT IT CAN’T HAPPEN IN ZAMBIA? TONGA UPRISING! TONGA UPRISING! ABASH BEMBA,NJANJA/NGONI DOMINANCE! WE SHALL FIGHT!

  11. Well Done dr. Mumba,
Now go and expel Banda from the party and hope EL or HH will quickly withdraw’s Bandas benefit.
A crook of an old ATI STATES MAN MA RUBBISH, NYANDULE!

  12. Good sport. teach (HH) the same. i hear (HH) has drafted a suicide note as EL prepares inauguration speech. (HH) has requested to be buried next to MCS in embassy park

    • YOU ARE STUPID! YOU GUYS ARE THE USELESS TRIBALISTS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR MOTHERLAND, AND MOST OF YOU ARE NOT EVEN PURE ZAMBIANS! YOU EITHER ORIGINATE FROM MALAWI, DRC OR TANZANIA. YOU HAVE POLLUTED OUR COUNTRY WITH YOUR DIRTY MINDS OF STEALING AND LOOTING THE RESOURCES OF OUR MOTHER LAND. THAT IS WHY YOU ARE ALWAYS AFRAID FOR A TONGA TO BE PRESIDENT BACAUSE THEY WILL SOUGHT YOU OUT SINCE THEY ARE THE TRUE OWNERS OF THIS COUNTRY AND HENCE WOULDN’T TOLERATE ANY SILLY ACT/BEHAVIOR AIMED AT DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY. WHEN IT IS A TONGA CONTESTING FOR PRESIDENCY YOU LABEL US WITH TRIBALISM, BUT IF IT IS A BEMBA OR NJANJA/NGONI THEN IT IS NOT TRIBALISM. THE CUP IS ALMOST FULL! TONGA UPRISING COMING! YOU WILL SWEAT!

  13. Just waiting for the declaration of Edgar Lungu as the 6th Republican President. My special thanks go to Guy Scott for keeping the peace in PF and the entire nation at a difficult moment that PF went through. He had the choice and he chose to sacrifice his interests for the sake of peace BOTH IN PF and the entire nation. Congratulations to EL and many thanks to Guy Scott. I hope EL will keep GS unless GS chooses to resign or retire on his own. EL and the entire nation owes alot to GS

  14. BREAKING NEWS: SAD-HH Breaks down…

HH breaks down uncontrollably after learning that UPND has been defeated *****
UPND supporters please the earlier you accept defeat the better for you, because wina azazimangilila ka… Stop kuzimvesesa mushe…..

EL, EL, EL!!!!!! Kuma final, EL Kuma final, ….. kuma final mama, kuma final, eyeeee kuma final mama !!!!!!!!!!

  15. Awe ati natukwata fi hope ba up n down party don’t be misled look at zambian watch dog post old results(early yesterday’s) no new post only frustrations

  16. Zambians would do well to be sceptical of this roadmap and must be vigilant to hold the PF government accountable to their stated time-frames in the plan.

Is he so sure ECL has won? This sentence says something to me.

  17. Thank you Nevers but a key word “resign” is missing in your statement. Deep down you knew that you stood no chance but decided to take the party down with you. The best you can do now is resign as MMD party leader to allow for fresh blood to preserve the little dignity left in you.

  18. Nevers has behaved like a statesman. What can stop well meaning people to call upon him in future. Keep doing this sort of thing; you’ll rise. Others who never ever see sense in any thing except being arrogant should emulate you. Violence and arrogance has cost them this election. They’ll never see the light of statehouse until they learn to be humble. But their tribe doesn’t know what humble is. Viva Nevers!

  19. Continued from the previous forum
Emmanuel Mwamba has toned down his rhetoric. In his latest posting on Facebook, he is sounding dispirited & frustrated. He has for the first time acknowledged that his candidate won in his strongholds which recorded voter apathy. He wondered why Southern and Western which are HH’s strongholds had an overwhelming turnout reminiscent to the 1991 elections. He was short of accusing ECZ of manipulating the results & quickly pours his rage on the election monitors. Instead of his usual style of claiming Edgar’s victory, he is now appealing for calm and wait for the official announcement by the ECZ. While it is already known without any doubt that Edgar has lost, he hopes for a miracle.
Good luck sir, but admittedly you put up an exceptional media…

  20. So, in short Dr. Mumba is saying EL has won this election right??? By his reference to PF and Constitituion roadmap, and not UPND.

And yet some colleagues are still dreaming of HH victory, lol. Sorry folks, HH has been sent to political retirement by someone who only had 2 months of campaigning. Ouch!!!!!

  21. This election win could turn out to be a poisoned chalice for EL in a years time if he doesn’t deliver the new constitution or his election promises. But I truley hope he turns out to be a great leader. After all, it not about one man or one party. It is about the prosperity of Zambia

  22. looking at the results from lusaka and copperbelt, just these two powerful provinces i now conclude hh and his under5 party are really delusional and allucinate all the time. How do you believe in a media house which cant keep a credible employee for than 6months due to bad management style, telling you, you have won by 84 percent and you believe. Stop overrating yourselves under5s.

  23. Welldone Mumba, Kwashala the so called “Moses Wanomba”, my foot! We have always told the supporters of this NGO called upnd that their so called Moses is not saleable! Let this chap change his name and remove the Ha, Hi nonsense from his names, maybe, just maybe it may sound attractive or if he can manage, let him change his way of doing politics where he portrays himself as the only educated and most inteligent swine who can rule this great country! He should realise that Zambia is bigger than his hole in southern province and for one to rule this great country, one needs the support of all the people regardless of their social status in society!
Let him enjoy himself as he cries his lungs out!

  24. UPND losing is going to come as a Good Big lesson for unprincipled people like the MMD MPs who had ditched their own party to support Another. It is a Big shame for masebo, Big belly GBM, Munkombwe, Moreen Mwanawasa. They should shut up in politics forever . They have no vision to be able to read events.

  25. Very sober minded. This is type of politicians we need in this quiet country, not hungry ones who are always suspecting the other. Give credit where it is due and this is what Never has just said. Well done Nevers. You have not lost but added credence to the election journey. God bless you as you soldier on .

  26. Anyone with western province votes? i need to do my maths.
Please guys. Some pipo are saying UPND has won others PF.If i get western results i’ll know the winner

  27. Am in love with the comment on ZWD stating:

“He who laughs last laughs longer”

Certainly, this confirms what one blogger said the Watchdog has in their custody a credible PVT report with HH’s name at the winner of this election. This is indeed the first time ZWD has played down their stories in the midst of a critical exercise such as this election. Am also left to believe Jojo’s assumption that ZWD knows what is at play and just waiting for the right time. For sure Edgar is no more. His campaign team is cold and Mwamba has repented. Even warming up to VJ? I hope he is not trying to switch sides since he is good at this.

  28. Dr Mumba, kudos for trying hard when all things worked against you from the out-set – the results show that you still have some following from which you can hope to build. You probably will need to re-brand as it is hard to conceive that the damage done to MMD by the foolish old man RB can be repaired! My prayers go out to you.

  29. MMD has a very bright future. The magic of life consists in the virtue of trying and trying again. UPND got about 2000 votes in the entire Muchinga and Northern Province. This time around they got 3800+ in Kasama central alone. Yes MMD must rebrand and find STRATEGIES to make the party attractive across the 10 provinces of Zambia. With the new constitution coming into play, winners in future elections will be those wIth wisdom and abilities to forge alliances with regional power centres.

  30. Chi shrek echalenga fyonse ifi,wen e.l wins,i hope he calls hh,mumba and r.b so they cn hav sum whisky and cigers, then after that grab sum sjiambock and giv r.b a very good beatin

  31. The most important adjustment to the constitution is the move to a 50% + 1. This is a most fundamental and far-reaching reform which will improve the character of our demo0cracy and define our nationhood.

The second thing is to subject presidential appointments of constitutional office bearers to parliamenatry approval, and to protect them accordingly.

We should aim to change that instead of changing the whole constitution. It is a waste of time going through a wholescale constitutional review, and introduces other complications which cannot be effectively dealt with in a shorttime.

In the long term, Zambians must constructively debate the long term governance arrangements and national character of our unitary state. There are no quick fixes on the constitution, no 90 days no 18…

  32. You tried your best Nevers Mumba and you fought a good fight. First against the old man RB then now in the elections. But it’s time you stopped heading the MMD. It is clear that the other members don’t support you or want you to lead them. Am sure you have two ears to listen and one mouth to talk

  33. During the latest ECZ briefing, UPND Senior lawyer Martha Mushipe acknowledged defeat by over 5000 ballots according to their PVT and brought in calls for a possible recount.

  34. NEVERS IS PATHETIC.
HE HAS BEEN REJECTED BY ZAMBIA AFTER HE HAD BEEN REJECTED BY BY THE MMD NEC.
AND YET HE IS TALKING ABOUT REBRANDING!!
IF A WOMAN DOES NOT WANT YOU JUST MOVE ON.
POLITICS IS NOT FOR YOU NEVERS.
    TRY THE PULPIT PERHAPS?

  35. It is never say die untill the last day, THE TONGA BULL says. For a TONGA BULL this is just another one of one game to keep oneself busy. TONGA BULLS do not cherish on such things alone, yhey like venturing in so many adventurous activities and farming being one of them.

As for HH he does not need any sympathy from any one, he is very fine and life goes on. It was another vacation. Dr. Mumba must havechosen a very wrong career this time around. He has GOD’s calling to stand at the plupet, are we talking about Jonar here, may be not. But one would advise, GO TO WHERE GOD SENT YOU.

  36. Wise words from Dr Nevers Mumba. But wise words do come from many, as in “Do what I say, Not what I do”.
Honestly I think that Dr Mumba’s station in life is not politics but something else that he must find, including going back to the pulpit.

Dr Mumba would do well to find something else to do and leave MMD to others.

  37. Without seeming to dictate to MMD on their next course of action Zambians have evolved without realising it. Strides have now been made in our pursuit to perfecting our structures. Edgar watch out, you are being watches. MMD going forward will need Dr. Mumba, just rejected to take a back step. Like Scott oversee a convention to elect another leader to start the re-branding process. Failure to which oblivion awaits. MMD can do things differently and survive.

    • Very gracious and well mannered but I don’t think Dr Mumba is a politician per se. It is impossible for him to lead a party that does not seem to like him. I think he is on a different page from his executive committee hence the failure as a party. The old man RB has not helped matters either. I put the blame squarely on his shoulders. RB destroyed MMD and then jumped ship to board another sinking ship.

  38. Why remove dual citizenship just because the majority of Zambians don’t travel? What a ridiculous opinion! Most civilized countries allow dual citizenship while as Zambians we lose out. Mono citizenship is archaic. It is the zambian who loses out and not the other countries.
