A Civic Leader in Luano District’s Chief Chembe’s area has called for urgent measures to curb the threat posed by crocodiles to village communities that are along the Lunsemfwa River.

Mwalala Ward Councilor Benford Katiti(PF) told ZANIS that he felt compelled to issue this appeal following the death of a boy who was killed by a crocodile in Chimika area’s Shiyenge village.

He said that residents believed that the crocodile population in that part of the Lunsemfwa River had increased, saying that there was need for ZAWA(Zambia Wildlife Authority) to apply measures such as crocodile cropping.

He said that that residents in the villages close to the river are living in fear of being attacked by the reptiles ever since crocodiles killed named a boy on Monday 16th February.

Commenting on this issue, Mkushi District ZAWA Officer in Charge Dickson Mwamba assured residents of that area that his department had commenced on strategizing on moves to address this appeal.

Mr. Mwamba said that he was making frantic efforts to mobilize manpower and resources to ensure that ZAWA Officers make assessments of the threat posed by crocodiles.

He insisted that the department would not leave anything to chance in its quest to protect the human population from being attacked by the reptiles.

He however admitted that the department was facing challenges regarding transport, explaining that the route to the valley Chiefdoms of Luano was difficult to pass during the rain season.

  1. Typical Zambians! You busters want to act when life is lost. So, lets assume there was no life lost, where you going to complain about logistical challenges…Nonses !!

  2. I will never understand one thing in this world. All of us know very well that rivers and other water bodies are the homes of crocodiles but just why do we let our children swim in those rivers. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. This is a message to the concerned authorities that boreholes are required in such areas.

  3. Who said the boy was swimming
He may just have been crossing the river and especially when there is no bridge what did you expect him to do?
If it was your son what would you have said?
