Government upgrades 220 basic schools into secondary

Share

The Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education has upgraded a total of 220 basic schools into secondary schools.

Ministry Spokesperson Hillary Chipango said the upgraded schools were so far performing very well.

Mr. Chipango said the ministry was therefore happy with the performance of secondary schools that were last year upgraded from basic schools countrywide.

He disclosed this development in a telephone interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He noted that the programme has benefited mainly rural pupils who were finding it very difficult to have access to distant secondary schools.
Mr. Chipango observed that government has already achieved 70 percent in its upgrading programme.

He has also said government will this year recruit 5,000 teachers noting that his ministry was planning to send most of them to upgraded schools to solve the challenges shortages and unqualified staff.

  1. WHAT DOES UPGRADING MEAN IN THIS CASE? HAS THE GOVERNMENT INCREASED AND IMPROVED THE FACILITIES AT THESE SCHOOLS BY INCREASING CLASSROOM NUMBERS, IMPROVING AND ADDING MORE SCIENCE LABS, ETC.

REPORTERS IN ZAMBIA ARE VERY POOR. THEY CAN’T EXPLAIN VERY BASIC STUFF. EG IN THIS CASE A ‘BEFORE’ AND ‘AFTER’ PHOTOS OF 2 OR 3 SCHOOLS WOULD HAVE BEEN IN ORDER. ANYWAY, MAYBE IN ZAMBIA THIS IS ASKING FOR TOO MUCH.

    • No its just means that the name is changed. from primary or basic school to Secondary school. No new infrastructure, no new teachers. Its development under PF am told.

    • its laziness, records are poor, reporting is biased, headlines and content are not linked at times, but maybe you are right, its asking too much..upgrading here means in the ‘name’ not infrastructure

  2. This just means that we have 220 less basic schools. Primary education is even more important the secondary education. Why would this govt have such terrible idea. Most of students in rural areas walk 10km to go to school. If these centers are then turned to sec. sch. where will our children go to sch? A better approach would be to add only one grade to the current basic schools so that in 3 years we have a complete stream of 1-12. Never abandon basic education.

  3. This is how we do things in Zambia. Make a declaration about upgrading while the essentials for such a step are at 0%. We begin climbing from the branches. Upgrading requires infrastructure, training and re-training of staff, putting in place such necessities as libraries, laboratory equipment etc. This declaration is just another thorn in the education standards of Zambia.

  4. Excellent move! The primary school became basic school and then the basic school became secondary school. This move is a practical way of empowering the youth through democratization of education. Each child must be entitled to a secondary education. In addition to that, each child must acquire skills training for entry into job market.
