PARLIAMENT has unanimously ratified the appointment of Irene Mambilima as Chief Justice following her nomination for the position by President Edgar Lungu. Justice Mambilima becomes the first female chief justice.

The motion to ratify Justice Mambilima was moved by Choma Central member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa, who was the chairperson of the Parliamentary select committee.

“The country has had no substantive chief justice for the past three years and my committee selected witnesses to make oral and written submissions after the President nominated Ms Mambilima as Chief Justice,” he said.

He said Justice Mambilima is qualified for the position as she has been in the legal fraternity for over 39 years.

  1. It is hard to do right in our country. It is survival of the devil. You must be related to someone to be someone, same family tree have been in these roles for a very long time. I look forward to a day when some of the names won’t be head of, like Kaunda, Chipimo, Lungu, Banda, Chiwanda, Chuungu, Munkombwe etc. It is sad that people are watching the country fall, how does a country govern without a defense minister, something is not right, The critical position are Fiance and defense. Zambians have no say, we are used to be abused.

    • @3 Democracy,

What do you mean the country has no Defense Minister when the President is currently the Serving Minister of Defense? Don’t you remember that President Mwanawasa doubled very well as Defense Minister? It is within the law and national interest for President Lungu to retain the Defense portfolio in the interim considering that he has experience and detail of this ministry which he served very well under late President Sata.

    • don’t be ignorant my brother. the position of defence minister is not the same as that of a school prefect. he is a unique minister. if you don’t understand security either keep quiet or consult.

    • Though the UpeND fagots wanted to intimidate her, but she stood her grounds! What a woman of substance!

  2. I pray she wont be used by this corrupt Panga Familly. We need justice in Zambia.Otherwise you qualify for the position.

  3. Having the way this lady handled the January 2015 elections, I strongly believe she is the rightful person to be on that seat. She knows what it takes to handle some of these raphian politicians we have, and I am also sure that any case that will go all the way to Supreme Appeal court will be ably handled. Thes are the people we say they were brought on earth for a good purpose. The other Lady was very prone to abuse and was not even able to stand on her own, it was by chance she found herself in that position not on merit, may be she needs to know that. We the on-lookers are the best judges in the absence of the ALMIGHTY. Wish you well Madam Mambilima in these trying moments, when we have Pangas being wielded all over.

    • MAMA MAMBILIMA IS RECEIVING ALL THE PRAISES. AND THIS IS BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT SHE WILL BE MAKING RULINGS IN THEIR FAVOUR. BUT WAIT UNTIL SHE STARTS DISPENSING JUSTICE. THEN THE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE PRAISING HER WILL START INSULTING HER AND WILL SAY SHE BELONGS TO SOME FAMILY TREE. TYPICAL THINKING OF ILLITERATES. WITH JUSTICE THERE IS NO FEAR NOR FAVOUR.

  4. whether this woman is strong in to stand forn justice her work will be interfered by the president becuase he appointed her

I know lungu he is somebody who efeebles the law at expense of the position

    • Pepertually bitter id!ot! Was it not Cornellius Mweetwa who was the chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee.? And please don’t expose your illiteracy by saying she was appointed by the President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu simply nominated her pending ratification in Parliament…ubukopo, dalo!

  5. Good appointment. Now do not allow these PF thugs to use you to rig the elections in 2016. The husband to this woman really enjoys I can imagin….HH2016

  6. “The country has had no substantive chief justice for the past three years and my committee selected witnesses to make oral and written submissions after the President nominated Ms Mambilima as Chief Justice,” he said.

What did we do right in the last three years …..?

    • Please, in as much as we have different political hands, lets respect elders.. Honestly you cant call a woman befitting to be your mother as nkumba…

  7. May I add the sending of her much deserved felicitations on this appropriate appointment. Bravo Mama Mambilima. In fact the term MAMA is befitting. May I also withdraw the use of the term MAMA from the following people:
    1. Kankasa
    2. Maureen Mwanawasa
    3. Kaseba

  8. At last, at last, at last thank goodness Mama you long deserved this position to preside over our judicial system with an independent mind. PF under Sata was so insular to the cries of Zambians over this national issue. Man can scheme things but will come to naught in the end. Congratulations Mama Mambilima.

  9. Her history clearly shows high standards in law practice…She is well prepared to handle the office of chief justice…My lady congratulations….

    • Congrats my lady I have always taken you to be a woman of integrity and I strongly believe that you will execute your duties without fear or favor we are behind you and always remember that you are a role model to the zambian community and the world at large May the Lord Bless you Amen!

  10. She is being rewarded for assisting EL win the election and to drop RB corruption case. The test for her integrity is yet to be proven. Just my thoughts

  11. Congrats mama on your appointment and ratification.

Ba BB2014. I think you are so irresponsible with your words and I think you are very useless.

  12. I find it ironic to notice that UPND accused the leadership of this lady that ECZ that she was leading stole votes in favor of EL but they are the first ones to propose her ratification. Did she really steal for 1 EL? or it is just one way now of conceding defeat, Mr. UPND President? I was expecting UPND to produce evidence against her as they called her names in the just ended election. so she and her team are clean if not cleaner. Anyway the nation has already moved on.
