Government says it has made progress in harnessing the country’s abundant water resources for efficient and sustainable utilisation in order to enhance economic productivity and reduce poverty.

Mines, Energy and Water Development Deputy Minister Charles Zulu said government wants to ensure that the country’s abundant water resources is utilised to meet all competing needs.

Mr. Zulu said efficient and equitable management of water will help in reducing poverty in the country by improving economic productivity in key economic sectors such as Agriculture, Manufacturing, Mining and Hydro -Power Generation.

The deputy minister said this in Lusaka today during the commemoration of this year’s World Water Day held under the theme “Water and sustainable development”.

And Mr. Zulu thanked all cooperating partners for supporting government. And the United Nations (UN) system reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government in implementing innovative ideas aimed at increasing access to clean water.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) officer Humble Siboohi said the UN stands ready to help Zambia in its quest to providing safe water to the local people.

Mr. Siboohi said sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation is among the most urgent issues not only affecting Zambians but globally.

  1. After global trotting the ,i have observed that most of the big,and middle towns are located near lakes, oceans and rivers especially in usa;europe, australia and canada. This helps the people to have water in abundance and reduce the costs.our city planners should be advising our politicians and not fear them.how can u make choma HQ instead of livingstone Which has water at its door step.

  2. Zambia has a lot of water that flows away to no use. If the Government could build dams along certain rivers to catch some of the water that flows by, we could preserve some of it instead of letting it just run through. Israel is partly in a desert and dry place and in Israel people will tell you that they value water. A small problem of broken water pipe will be fixed with a short period of time.
In Zambia broken water pipes can run unattended for as long as a year. I have personally seen people draw water from a broken pipe for a year and Council workers pass by without any concern.
