Levy, Mutharika arrive in Chipata tomorrow

President Mwanawasa and his Malawian counterpart Bingu wa Mutharika are expected in Chipata tomorrow to attend this year’s Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people.

The ceremony takes place at Mkaika in Katete this Saturday.

The two Heads of State will be joined by  Mozambican President,  Armando Guebuza,
who will fly straight to Katete on Saturday morning for the ceremony.

According to the programme released by the provincial administration in Chipata,
President Mwanawasa arrives at Chipata airport at 11:00 hours tomorrow  while
Malawian President arrives at 13.30 hours by road through Mwami border.

The two Presidents are later in the afternoon scheduled to flag off the construction
of the Chipata-Mchinji railway project before paying a courtesy call on Paramount
Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi.

In the evening, President Mutharika and his host will attend a royal Dinner at
Appolo Officers Mess.

Paramount Chiefs  Kalonga Gawa Undi, Mpezeni and other chiefs from Zambia,
Mozambique and Malawi are also expected to attend the dinner.

Meanwhile, Eastern province minister Lameck Mangani has appealed to the people in
the province to give the three heads of state a rousing welcome.

Mr Mangani told ZANIS in Chipata today that the presence of the three Presidents at
this year’s Kulamba traditional ceremony will further strengthen the already warm
relations among the three sister republics.

The provincial minister said the ceremony is an important platform for the promotion
of cultural integration among the Chewa people in the three countries.
                                                                              
And Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi’s senior Induna and Spokesperson Joseph
Chikuta said all is set for the Kulamba traditional ceremony slated for Saturday at
Mkaika.

Mr Chikuta who took a team of senior government officials led by Community
Development Permanent Secetary Teddy Kasonso on a conducted tour of preparatory
works at the arena, said the Chewa royal establishment was happy that President
Mwanawasa and his counterparts from Malawi and Mozambique had accepted the
invitation to grace this year’s Kulamba.

He said this was a sign of unity existing between the three countries.

Mr Chikuta said about 150 chiefs from the three countries were expected to attend
this year’s Kulamba traditional ceremony at Mkaika.
