Commute woman’s death sentence, pleads ZUJ

Share

THE Zambia Union of Journalists has appealed to the Chinese Government through its embassy in Lusaka to commute the death sentence of Mary Musiyalike, a Zambian woman convicted for drug trafficking.

Ms Musiyalike, 38, a business executive of Lusaka was arrested with 2.5 kilogrammes of heroin at Putong International Airport in Shanghai on December 14 last year and sentenced to death by firing squad after she was convicted of drug trafficking by a court in China.

ZUJ president Morgan Chonya said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that Zambia and China had enjoyed very warm and cordial relations over the years.

“We appeal to the Republic of China Government to commute the death sentence of Ms Mary Masiyalike. The two countries have long bonds of friendship that should count for something.

“We therefore call on our comrades to revisit the verdict,” Mr Chonya said.
He said ZUJ was dismayed by the statement that the Zambian convict would be put to death through a firing squad at a date known by the prison authorities.

Mr Chonya said the statement was traumatising to the victim’s family and the Zambians at large.

He said it was the responsibility of the Government to ensure that every Zambian abroad received fair trial and felt safe as well as protected whether they were convicts or not.

He called upon the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure that the victim was extradited and served her term here in Zambia.

  1. We have treated thieving chinese nationals humanely in this country. One good turn deserves another. They should just send her back home. Problem is that naimwe ba kazi simumvela! Your love for cash is costing you your lives. why do you like being used kanshi?

  2. Ba Moze, this is a grown woman, so ifya being used nakana sana because she knew exactly what she was doing. However, I totally agree with you that we treat foreigners with kid gloves when it comes to them violating our laws. Its time as Zambians we start treating foreigners like we would treat our own because they are not special regardless of their relationship with Zed.

  3. Very traumatising indeed, may the govt do something, us zambians are not used to dying in that nature. too barbaric

  4. As gaga has put it if u cant do the time dont do the crime! She made a conscious decision to carry the drugs so now she has live (or die) with the consequences. ‘lamulo ni lamulo’. Its a lesson to us to not be lenient on foreigners when they break our laws.

  5. dalisto. you are very correct my friend. As an adult, she must face the consequences. Namvela chifundo though. Imagine a (probably) beautiful girl being shot to death by maybe four armed soldiers! Our women have a problem. Lets also start treating these foreigners the same here.

  6. This shouldnt be a problem for the Zambian govt to solve after all here its china ,china, china. help musyalike by bringing her to serve her sentence from Chimbokaila not firing squad. let the zed govt do something for a change. Musyalike naiwe ifyakuchita wamona

  7. Our girls do not learn. Nigerians are clever they want to use you to carry drugs and when you are arrested you are on your own. This is a lesson to others who intend to commit this crime.

  8. China should think about this twice, am not happy though this woman is guilty but one day it will be a Chinese in Zambia. # 1 I agree with you. Death is beyond judgment even the Bible puts it clear” Thou shalt not kill”. Chifundo but naimwe bakazi mutekanyeko pang’ono pankani yakang’ono(money). Look now this disturbs my feelings I’ll not even work well thinking of what it will cost this woman’s relatives and the hearts of all Zambians.

  9. Its not even surprising that women are quiet over the fate of munzawo. ladies, where are you? tamumfwa imwe! Mwamona nomba? Firing squad, ka. Elo ukufwa ninshi wamanga natu mukule kumutu! Uluse.

  10. This incident should teach us something: How many Chinese people have violated the law and just get away with it With little or no charges? Not just Chinese; they are many foreigners who come to Zed and do whatever they wish and get away with it. We should start prosecuting them as well.

  11. Let as all brothers come together to fight this hash sentence slaped on our sister.but this does not mean that she should not be punished.John nyawali my brother if you are listening please let you commison do something about it.its me your bro…CHELSTON.

  12. Ba China nabo ukusamwa? Let us also change the law to have any foreigner especially chinese to be executed by our anti robbery squad when they violate our laws especially when they are found to have stolen copper.

  13. If this gal will die in China, then lets call it quits with them. all those bogus choncholiz must pack chimbokaila with no parole and no commuting to serve sentences in china after all their jails are full.

  14. I praay that the mutolakanis will manage to get something out of this good cause, she is guilt, but firing squad is no way to die, fyakale!! God values life, so who are to just take it away like that, punishment is in prison because the dead are conscious nothin at all (Ec 9:5).

Britain has just struck a deal. A black British to serve a life sentence abroad will end up serving that sentence in a british prison.

Why can’t you fight for you nationals? We all make mistakes, let her serve her setence in one of the Zambian prisons, its tougther there.

The Embassy people are just busy thinking of how to make themselves rich before they are recalled. Here is something to do, please negotiate with the Chinese Govt. for the sake of you people.

Zambia Unite. Even sending a person…

  15. awe kwena 2.5Kilogrames(ama-kilo yabili) of cocaine yafulisha naimwe mummy?oviasly mwali “doping” tunono so mwale monafye fyonse mu easy te!u see now were it has landed you?

  16. Someone says women are quiet over this matter. We are merely horrified by your ‘sadist’ comments. Very unpatriotic bloggers. We must first save the life of Musiyalike, bring her here and then rebuke her. The British are doing just that for that black girl who fell pregnant

  17. # 19 Ethel wat are u trying to tell us????maybe the drugs were “planted” on her????if so Y hasnt she spoken out?but she has remained silent, meaning she knows everything about the two-keys.

  18. #17 how do you know may be it could be your relative.Zambia is a christian nation and it is not wright in Zambia for someone to die like a dog.

  19. @Changu Muleya, i fonly this woman can donate the proceeds of the conaine sale to the MMD 2011 campaig will the govt contemplate ever speaking on her beahlf. Oh wait a minute, the cocaine was grabbed from her, so (uuhhmm) she does not have the money. Then, the govt will not speak on her behalf. Its as simple as that. This is how these men and women we have elected act.

  20. To our sister bloggers:
Remember it is these same drugs that cause some people to do horrible things like defiling under age. So condoning drug trafficking is just as good as condoning defiler, murderers, pedophiles etc.

  21. #10 Ba Moze ati ‘ukufwa ninshi wamanga natu mukule”, LMAO. #19 Ethel as a woman I feel you,but
na life twatemwa as ladies iya ma Prada nama Louis Vuitton alatuletelela. Drug trafficking in China if a suspect is found guilty carries a sentence of death by firing squad, so I think its a fair judgement as stipulated by Chinese laws. However I would love for her to be extradited, but it would have been better if our government had asked for an extradition while the case was going on. Otherwise she deserved what she got!

  22. Iwe ka Daisy naiwe uchenjele sitifuna kuwona umushe uyo mu prison, ndiwe ka mushe you deserve a bright future, Whats your occupation?. I’ve missed Abigail’s poems.

  23. Though she commited that crime I think she does not deserve to die that way horrible thing to do on a human can the chinese pliz send her back home we can keep her at chimbokaila instead ieven wonder how they teating her utu tu bantu imitima ibi while natu chita pollute ichalo chesu nama gon’ga.what do all zambians think this is no laughing issue mailo chali niwe.

  24. F.T.J shani mani. Ine nili che! Magelo aya kusamvela.

Dalisto, True mudala! Ni loss sure kufa natu mukule.

Ethel, No sadist comment on my part, but hey, you girls definately have issues when it comes to tong!!

  25. The Zambia gov’t should do what the British have done to their own in Lao. No matter where the Zambians and who they are the Zambian goverment, should come to their rescue. China should be able to listen and give Musialike another sentece which she can serve from Zambia.

  26. Its not a matter of the passport she was carrying. Its about drug trafficking. Lets move on and protect our young people

  27. The media is our voice.. please continue putting pressure on the Chinese Govt. They have a lot to lose if they go ahead with this jurisdiction. Lets keep this issue going. Good job Mr Chonya, take this issue further to the president – RB, he needs to step in if possible. We will deal with this woman in our country. We as Zambians say this kind of behaviour is inhuman and we refuse to have our own subjected to this kind of judgement. The woman was wrong but we say leave the jurisdiction to us. We will remember her family in our prayers and hope her sentence is transferred to our own Government.

  28. True, she committed an offense and must be punished by an eye for an eye only leaves both parties blind! She is better off serving her sentence in the tricky prisons of Zambia. This should serve as an example to both men and women in Zambia. Drugs are just shameful way of gaining an income. Well done ZUJ for coming up with this idea when goverment is practically sleeping and may even allow the killing of this girl. Take the example from UK where a young British woman is in similar probs. (blac woman for that) and yet government is intervening for her.

  29. #38 What we should be doing is plead with the Chinese to spare her life. Not telling them to leave the Jurisdiction to us, when the offence was committed there. Kwaliba?

  30. #21. Iam not saying she is not guilty. Most of you may have committed worse offences. But we must bring her home and allow her to serve a lifesentence here. We must not have a narrow world the way she did. We must show wisdom. Next time it will be your niece. Is that what you want to see? Yes, women have gone for quick money but is that the punishment such offences deserve? Death sentences have never been a solution to the drug crisis. If anything, the prices are getting higher and drug barons richer in view of the risk. Let’s serve her life; your sister or NOT!

  31. Ms Musiyalike, 38, a business executive of Lusaka! What kind of a business executive is she when she is being arrested with 2.5 kilogrammes of heroin in a foregin country? People must be realistic, she has to face the consequences for her actions. She does not respect the law of China or even Zambia. Ba December are busy educating the nation on the dangers of drugs and a so called business executive is busy defying the law and ignoring the call to stop drug trafficking. She must serve as an example to the other. She will not learn and its better for her to be killed that coming back home to suffer in Chimbokaela. Withe the levels ofcorruption pa Zed, she will just bribe prison warders and disappear. She is not only the only one to be treated like that its everyone so you are a caught.

  32. I meant to write; She is not the only one to be treated like it is everyone so long you are caught wanting!

  33. So sad for the sister.anyway I think its better to be shot in China than spend time in a Zedian prison coz they are REALLY HELL.atleast she wont suffer anymore.Thats my opinion.

  34. Agree that as a knowing adult she must face the punshiment but unlike the Jackel (42) I think returning to Chimbokaela is a fate worse that death. Hopefully that will be the reall deterrent to all the VJ’s

  35. this woman was used by a nigerian. There are many Nigerians in China. Zambian girls or woman have always fallen prey to Nigerians. they will tell them that they are not married when they’re because they just want to use them. unfortunately our zambian women don’t learn from what has happened to others. they think that other airports are like lusaka where they’re free to pass without being detected with every drug they swallow or put under their pants

  36. It is unfortunate that Zambians are getting involved in such acts. I am just asking Mr.Lupando Mwape to see that countrys’ president so that our sister is brought back to Zambia and serve her sentence here. Next time it will be a Chinase guy to be executed in Zambia or any other African country. I believe we inter-depend in development.

China, please hear to our crys.

  37. Iyo kwena abantu balanda. This is a big lesson to all you female business executives. Mwafwala notuma high heels ati, executive! naka mini na tuma gold chain! Lwenu! Pa China, those things dont matter. Ni firing squad chabe. Lets plead sana anso. This actually may require RBs intervention, not ba Lupando, awe. Kuti baonaula. Using Lupando can result in a faster execution.

  38. This is a job for these foreign diplomats to prove their worth instead of vulting on zambian passport funds. The can negotiate her release to serve her sentence on zambian soil on the premise of damaging trade relations with Zambia. Zambian diplomats are useless and untrained all they are good for is claiming expenses

  39. #40, i understand that we should get into some kind of agreement with Chinese government and from our understanding their law subjects people with such crimes to being killed but my opinion is that whatever it is the two governements can come into an agreement to have that matter transferred to our courts who can then judge her accordingly. At the end of the day our goal is to stop this babaric behaviour. She is better off ku Chimbokaila or hwatver you call it than being shot , i ca’t belive that we have people of the opinion that she be killed. How many people have done drugs in Zambia including some who are leaders? We won’t mention names and besides that even from being put in our prisons he will have learnt a lesson. Iam sure no Zambian will do this in CHina, governement should

  40. hahah 349.. i conquer with you. I think we need training for these diplomats, who can not understand what the heck they are there for.

  41. I am sure she knew what she was getting into and knew the risk. She took it and got caught. Unfortunatelt she may just be a pawn in a big chees game. I feel for her bit we all make choices and she made a bad one. What will we telling the young-go against a country policies and you will be spared because we can negotiate you to come home. I do not know this lady but I have very little respect for people who deal drugs and I am sure had she made the deal she was not going to look at helping the nation in any way but pose big time as we do in Z. So my heart goes out to her but as I saud earlier-if you can not do the time do not do the crime

  42. i agree almost entirely with Gaga. and as a zambian woman, i cannot believe the amount of sexist, racist, ignorant comments from (i’m supposing) fairly educated zanmbian men. its disgraceful!
if she trafficked drugs int China, she should have been aware of the consequences. most far east countries stipulate death as the penalty for drug trafficking. the only reason Samantha Orobator has been spared the death penalty in Laos is because they don’t execute pregnant women.
the cheek of men to say zambian women just love money. the absolute cheek! drug trafficking is a worldwide crime, as is greed, as is lust ..the list is endless. the government must intervene on a case by case basis, to deter crimes like these. if we don’t like the government, talk by voting intelligently, or join…

  43. politics and do a better job.

after all, the only hing evil needs o get ahead in this world is for the good people to sit back ad do nothing.

  44. In China such is just the way crime is fought. So many Nigerians have disappeared on the streets of Beijing and never to be heard of again. This is a second Zambian woman in Chinese jail for drug dealing. Last year 26-7 year old lady died in jail for trafficking in china. And please, China has no bible so taking someones life especially under its laws is just part of life.
Like I always say ‘Dont you know that the drug dealing bring the blood spilling?’.
I tell you this, no matter what, this lady will be shot until pronounced. I wish to die honorably coz u only die once.

  45. Batho, hey we had our brothers and sisters murdered not long ago by these wachin!chinchin in a mine blast out of gross negligence( This can establish intent on the part of the wachin!chinchin leding us to murder) Can we also send their directors to Mokobiko.
I don t condon the act of my sister but if we ask the wachin!chinchin govt for a trade off. They will be foolosh not to take it

  46. As I travel around the world I have noticed a UNHOLY ALLIANCE between zambian women and nigerian men. Its clear from what we see here what this alliance is about. Wake up!

  47. I find this article rather interesting one that I have ponded with rather mixed views regarding this young lady’s fate.Greed is one of the deadly sins and one should ask themselves what price am I paying for this vice.In my many encounters with Zambians over that last centuary I have found them to be humble, friendly and hospitable people. But some of young generation have chosen distructive paths.Don’t blame the Nigerian men or any other group of people for the fate that awaits this young lady. One must ask themselves what price am I paying for the risk am taking. This message goes out to all Zambians respect the laws of the land be it in Zambia or China.2.5kg of drugs can bring riches but it can also get you a 21 gun salute send off in China.Wake up Zambians!!!
