Chabuka ceremony of the Ushi postponed

The Chabuka traditional ceremony of the Ushi people of Luapula Province which was supposed to be held this weekend has been postponed to 17th October 2009.

Chabuka Midlands Organizing Committee Secretary, Robinson Mwansa, disclosed this to ZANIS in a statement on behalf of the Council of Chiefs of the Ushi people.
He said the change of date is due to popular demand by numerous people around the country who want to attend the ceremony.

Mr. Mwansa said there have been calls from people countrywide for the ceremony to be pushed to a later date to enable them attend.
He advised all the people intending to travel to Luapula for the ceremony to take note of the changed date.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwansa has called on the members of the general public and the business community to contribute generously towards the hosting of this year’s Chabuka traditional ceremony.

The Chabuka traditional ceremony is held every year as a thanks giving event by the Ushi people in remembrance of their ancestors crossing of the Luapula river from Kola in Congo DR to Zambia.

  1. Whats is the difference between this ceremony and mutomboko i thought mutomboko was also born out of the crossing of the luapula river, somebody enlighten me

  2. Too many cooks spoil the broth so goes the saying. Zambia is in danger of tearing itself apart as chiefs vie for recognition.

  3. They invited Mr. Obama,Mr. Brown and RB is out of the country on holiday, but yet to confirm the dates of travel and this affected the ceremony

  4. Too many traditional ceremonies in zed, this will cause civil wars as chiefs are trying to compete with each other. I ask the Gvt to limit these things to one province. There are other ways of teaching our children cultures.

  5. # 1, as you can see from the story; the chabuka (crossing)is for the Ushi tribe while mutomboko (is a victory dance) is for the Lunda tribe. These are two different tribes, but one thing you might hear on the streets is that these same people are “Bemba.” Eating with both hands, there’s a lot of confussion among the people from Luapula when it comes to identifying themselves. They even want to do “chibuya” with the Ngonis, if you ask them why and how, they remain speechless… Their elders should guide them before they lose themselves….

  6. I have heard from other people that the Chabuka people were originally traders on the Indian Ocean who landed on the Mozambique coast as they eventually moved inland into the continent. Can anyone substantiate this and if possible provide a website with this information.
Or can anyone tell me of the origins of the Chabuka people.
