Winstone Zulu, one of the world’s leading activists against

the spread of HIV/AIDS and TB says there is need for collaboration between government and TB centers in the country if the fight against the disease is to be won.

Global Friends in Action Program Manager Winston Zulu says despite the disease being in existence for more than 120 years, people have not fully understood it due to lack of adequate information compared to that of HIV/AIDS.

Winstone Zulu became the first individual in Zambia to publicly acknowledge being HIV positive. He has been living with HIV and AIDS since 1990, and became sick with – and was cured of – TB in 1997. He watched four of his brothers die of TB, as a result of a lack of access to the drugs that would have cured them and extended their lives. He’s since become the preeminent global advocate on the dangers posed by the increasing spread of TB throughout the developing world.[quote]

He’s one of the few TB survivors who continuously remind us that TB is the leading cause of death for those with HIV.

Mr Zulu has urged government to come up with programs that would adequately raise TB awareness in communities so that people understand the disease including its medication.

Mr Zulu told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that lack of access to TB information and medications has played a role in the increase of TB cases although it is curable.

He was once quoted as saying “It’s difficult to get drugs in some rural areas, but the strange thing is that you can find Coca-Cola almost everywhere.”

Meanwhile Mr. Zulu has said his organization, with financial assistance from the Catholic Church in the USA, has embarked on a campaign to empower people living with TB by building them houses and improving their diets.

He said the initiative which started 3 years ago has seen the construction of 10 houses out of the targeted 100 units in Kabwe’s Makulu Township.

Mr Zulu said the process has been slow due to inadequate resources and non-availability of land for the structures.

And Mr Zulu disclosed his organization has constructed a multipurpose community centre and also intends to build a secondary in the same area..

  1. Ba Winston you are a brave man I salute you, continue the fight, one day AIDS will be like malaria. However, I agree that now lets advocate more for drugs, coz even kids as old as five year olds know what AIDS is or have an idea, of its effects! awareness time has passed lets move for more treatment campaigns!

  2. wow this guy is still going strong and making a difference, I saw him in 1992 when he came to give a talk at my secondary school when HIV/Aids was some obscure disease like Leukodystrophy is to most of us today. I salute you winstone zulu. You turned a big negative in your life to something positive.Polio, TB , HIV could not keep you down! Wish you many years to come.

  3. The greatest evils of our society today are poverty and ignorance! Once we tackle the scourge of poverty and educate ourselves, AIDS, TB, Malaria, etc, will become much easier to manage, and our people’s vulnerability to these ailments will greatly reduce. We salute you Winston… since 1990 and going strong! Respect…

  4. I agree with Winston entirely on the lack of focus on addressing the challenge of TB in the country. As much as the strategy should be to make ARVs accessible to as many people as possible, providing TB treatment for those patients diagnosed with it is likely to improve the outcome of the use of ARVs. Its extremely gratifying to see Winston still going strong, a true testament of one’s will to livve and embrace life. God Bless.

  5. Out of plain curiosity, I have a question: are there any cases in Zambia where a person who has willfully infected others with the virus has been charged with manslaughter by the courts? Such cases are quite common in Germany and I feel ashamed to witness that most of the culprits, both men & women are of African origin.
Nevertheless, these diseases (HIV/AIDS & TB) continue to be a threat to our continent and have affected almost every Zambian’s life in one way or another, so let’s continue supporting people like Winstone Zulu in his good work. A maximum big up to him & his crew!

  6. Mr Zulu your courage to fight HIV/AIDS has meant alot to the world.Anyway by this time around information on HIV/AIDS/TB has been widely spread and pipo have the knowledge about this now, however at this point we need strategic intervention programs based on prevention of new HIV infection and programs to support and empower those already living with HIV/AIDS/TB.Otherwise failure to fight poverty is failure to fight HIV.

  7. Mr Zulu may be you can also contact Margic Johnson he mighty incooperate you in runing one of his business firms either stearbuck coffee,McDonald or motor insurance agencies

  8. #5 (Lotus)

S.c.r.e.w. you for that shallow remark! I know you’re entitled to freedom of speech, but such remarks are pathetic and a clear indication of you shallow mindedness. Why not just concentrate on your full time job of mopping the floor at McDonald’s, rather than wishing death on this poor soul. Ati am in the States… imbecile!

  9. Good to learn that you are still going strong and still pursuing the fight against HIV/AIDS and TB. First time l met you was at UNZA in 1994 when you came to give a talk on the same. Carry on brother coz Zambia needs more people like you

  10. Ba LT, why do you and the likes of you in Zambia have this exeggerated sense of the dramatic? Since when was this guy Winstone Zulu, “one of the world’s leading activists against

the spread of HIV/AIDS and TBecause you write about him in LT doesn’t make him known beyond your outside of your imaginary bounderies of Zambia!! I doubt they have even heard of him in his own village wherever it is in Zambia!

  11. #10 Walasa! Kaili people skim such things will never happen to them, life is full of twists and shocks, today its winston, it may not be you tomorrow, but it could be someone you are really close too, as the ngoni’s say, chaona muzako mailo chilipali iwe! 12. BA #10 and #12

Are your comments necessary sure??? Am asharmed you fellows share my home country…but yet again logic implies that we, unfortunately as it is, should have small minded bastards like you small timers!

  13. Ba # 5 we know too well that your mother has AIDS and you were also recently treated for kanswende. Just go and take an HIV test instead of pouring your frustration on this site. Stop attacking Winston you devil and ugly face. You are playing healthy when you pick prostitutes day in day out from the taverns. Your ex girl friend also died of AIDS in 2007 and what makes you think you are healthy? Dont play healthy here when your trousers are dropping. Just look how your face is shrinking. You think we dont know you *****….? You can fool those who dont know you.

  14. BA # 10

SORRY BOSSESSSS…ITS THE BLOODY # 5 I WAS AFTER…MY APOLOGIES..IN MY ANGER (AND APPRECIATING YOUR COMMENTS, WITH CHI 5 IN MY MIND…) I MESSED UP…SORRY AGAIN.

  15. Winston Coke is found in rural areas coz its not managed by Govt but a private company. U cant compare the two in the context you did

  16. the strategy is to reduce the burden of tb among people with hiv on one hand and to reduce the burden of hiv among people with tb on the other. which is basically everyone getting involved.of course corruption continues to hamper any efforts towards a lasting solution leading to donors withholding funds.politicians’ priorities are also so misplaced that the wont put resources into the struggle.

  17. #5 you may go to the other side of town before Winstone. From the way you write you dont care about people. Shame on you!!!

  18. This guy is strong, but can someone tell him to stop sleeping around with different women. I know him well. When he came to Kabwe he was staying in Luangwa, Iris Street and the guy wacikoti. And has one known child with one of his girlfriends. He is totally behaving like some preacher men. Do what I say and not what I do.

  19. #5 Lotus! Just bcoz you are an illegal immigrant in the states doesnt mean you lose your sense of Zambian compassion. Winstone is brave who has inspired alot of people by coming out in the open. But for we will never even know about or perhaps you might not even come back to Zambia, you will remain a garden boy (kaboyi) forever. May God add more years to Winston!

  20. Thanks for de-mystifying an illness that puts so much fear in all of us, keep going strong and may the Almighty add many more years to your life…..after taking them from #5

  21. Bloggers, how do u know he resides in States (#5 Lotus). U will be surprised to see most of these guys living in Diaspora the way they live. Nomwikala inkumba mwawama po. It’s just a name that he is in Europe or States. Even boosting that States is nice and cant be compared to Zambia. But the question is what contributions have you done to those western countries? totall y nothing.

  22. Great and positive contributions bloggers these ones are, except for the two or three misdirected opinions. One thing clear is that the disease is here for as long as world powers that be want it to stay amongst us it will. And if there are people amongst us that are living testimony that hiv is no longer a killer “disease” but a chronic ilness, well and good. And why not give them a thumbs for the endurance and the stigma sufferred!
Winstone is only human after all. With feelings. Aren’t we all. We all have had sex and unprotected one at that. Do you know your status?
Unless we ABC we are all infected or affected?
    A=Abstain, but can you no#5 and #12
B=Be tested and remain fiathful to your partner, but will she/he remain faithful?

  27. Zed Analizer do not mislead people. There is no cure for HIV/AIDS. The vaccine has not yet been discovered but there are studies that are showing positive signs. The reason why HIV is difficult to eradicate completely in the body is that it mutates my friend. We need to put our efforts in prevention and supporting those that are already living with it. Stigma, discrimination and ignorance will just make things worse. There is no point to start debating on the origins of HIV while many people have died and continue to do so as we blog.
