The 14 year old girl getting married makes sad reading, Parliament should make clear laws to guide the people. This girl should be going to grade 8 for a better future. She is likely to have a baby by age 15. Her life is basically over and she does not know it.Strengthen the laws of the country to protect these young people from self total destruction. Lusaka Times should follow this story for 10 years if it survives that long, it may be for a few years. It will be a lesson for others.

Iwe Great Galu, nowadays we have joined the global village so some of our customs cannot be fighting global regulations that we are signatory to . The world has agreed that one is a minor until 16 so Zambian custom has to conform. This is obviously a forced marriage. Lastly, how can you say stop thinking like Europeans yet the African bride and groom in the picture go to such great lengths to carbon copy a European wedding ceremony? Why cant they wed in traditional or African dress? They want to be European so they must follow European rules!

Am not a lawyer but i know something about the laws in Zambia. #20 #11 The law is Zambia states that an adult cannot have sexual relations with a minor, this is contrary to Section 138 CAP 87 of the laws of the Republic of Zambia. Having carnal knowledge of a minor (age below 16) is an offense in Zambia, so its not like people are just copying western rules, this is OUR law. So this guy and his parents must be arrested and charged for child defilement. He is an adult as he s legally able to vote in our Country. 3 years from now he will even qualify to stand as a Member of Parliament MP (age 21) while the girl would not even have reached the age to vote! this is ridiculous, how do we expect to develop when we allow our children’s futures to be thrown away!

To dispel any misunderstandings surrounding my comment on #11, I did not say that I approve of this teenage marriage. All I did was take a neutral stance by saying some things appear abnormal at first glance but begin to seem normal depending on different factors like culture, background, world-view or religion.
I have read about babies being given to each other in marriage somewhere in India because it’s their custom. Should their parents all be arrested? I also recall watching a report where a 12-year old boy married his 11-year old cousin in a Saudi province, becoming the youngest married couple in the world. Just check the Guiness Book of World Records if you dont believe me.

Others have even gone to dennounce the tribe-Tonga. Lets not be intoxicated with these western laws and culture (or is it life style). As most of you know almost the entire set of Zambian Laws are a direct transplant from the British Laws. Up to dateZambia’s copied Laws have never been modified (if any very little) to suit the Zambian ways of life (culture and traditions). While in the originating country (Britain) All or at least most of these laws have been debated and amended. And taught to people what thiese Laws mean. In fact this/these consent Law(s) might have even started at, 4argument’s sake, 13. But over years, upgraded to 18.

Remember Rupiah Banda’s pornography case against Chanda Kabwela? The Law that was applied against her was originally from Britain. But the same Law has been refined to suit the contemporarly time (and not to suit an individual or a group of individuals). Now, coming back to the wedding. That young man and his suiter (including villagers) may not be in a position to know that there is even a ‘Law of Age Consent’. This is even worsened by the fact that in Zambia there’s no system in place which teaches citizens about their civil rights. If one did not have an opportunity to enter into a class room, then you were shut out.

How can we distinguish defilement from this case?
Under the Musungu law…even when thieves and murderers are caught in the act they are called suspects.In my traditional law there is no such thing as a suspect.When a criminal is punished by the masses in Shangombo the Musungu called it Mob justice.
Since the constitution is not yet published include the following
1.Defilement will only applies in urban cities
2.Villagers will be allowed to grow cannabis
3.Due to poor condition of services.corruption is legal.
4.Prostitutes will be subside by govt to curb defilement in cities.
5.All H3´s Hammers to be sold,money to shared with the poor.
6.Having a potbelly in poor neighborhoods is a criminal offence- and will call for inverstigation

So, even if we are just copying things, we must modify them to contemorarily suit our ways of life, and put in place a structure which educates people (whether they pass thru a class room or not) about these things. Therefore, think twice b4 u start blaming or insulting those villagers or even becoming tribal about it. Don’t get me wrong. I am not in any way in favour of under-age-anything. And one or two main culprits driving Zambians to such indignities are poverty, unemployment, lack of opportunity to be in school at the right age, diseases (HIV/AIDS), the broken extended family fabric due to poverty, etc. These happenings today in Zambia are the offshoots of poor and greedy governance by our leaders in Zambia. Morally and maturely, it is, and should be repugnant that persons of that age should be marrying. But here are the facts. The age of consent applies to Englsh law – and that is age 16. If you marry under the English law, you are bound by this age limit. But Zambia has concurrent laws. Side by side with the English law, is customary law. Everything has its own time. Those of you who are supporting this wedding are enemies of development human rights. Iwe ka #54 nobupuba obe does it mean when you grand got married at 14 you also need to get married at 14? You are using a an old instrument to solve a current problem. This guy must go to school other wise all of you who are supporting you will always be a laughing stock in the world. Ba Nine Chale naimwe #11 and #36 we thank you so much for your education but it seems education has not helped you. If in Soudi Province they marry at 11 then you think we should continue with outdated styles. Plz you need to educate others with you education and not be brain drained. Reorient yourselves guys before you support this marriage. What a shame to like Zambian live in out dated world.
