Zambian Airways debt swells to $1.9 million

Share

The Zambian Airways debt to the National Airports Limited has increased from 1.6 million United States to 1.9 million United States dollars.

The debt is as a result of unpaid air passenger services and other services.

National Airports Corporation Limited Finance Director, Frederick Banda, told ZNBC news, Monday, that Zambian Airways has not communicated on how it intends to off set the debt.

Mr. Banda however, said his organisation has agreed with National Airports that the airline pays passenger service charges weekly to prevent the debt from swelling.

Zambian Airways makes fifty thousand dollars per day in passenger service charges.

As at September 4, Zambian Airways had defaulted payment by three months.

It also defaulted in other services such as ground handling services, aircraft landing and parking services by six months.

  1. What really is going on here? How come there seems to be a link between Levy’s death, presidential preferences and the Zambian Airways saga? Why didn’t we hear this before since the airline has defaulted for over six months now? Why didn’t the media pick up this story then? Is there a conspiracy here? How come the Post only seems to print favourable stories about the same? How come Dora Siliya who fought Magande over the’deal’ to reschedule the date was reported to have mellowed her view? What is the link with politics??? someone needs to investigate for us. Is there any investigative journalism in Z? Am not commenting as such, just wondering aloud.

  2. yes let them sell equity on LuSe to raise cash. No govt bailout or NAC pardon. This is supposed to be free market economy and not socialism. Why should the tax I pay be used to keep this joint that benefit a few in business

  3. Debt management is of main concern in this country. Debt eats up on wealth and can cripple an organisation if not correctly managed. It starts from the CEO’s ability to pick up a phone and call his counterpart asking for a delay in payment and because of the trust that the counterpart has in the friend he accepts. Personality and status in society creates such an environment for a debt to accumulate. This is a problem on both parties and NACL should not be singing this song of ZA owing. In the first place where was management when this debt was accumulating because this has not just come up in a month or a day. The parties involved should look at the best option available to resolving this.

  4. Strange in deed. what is the connection between LPM’s death and the Zam Airways?. Dora was supposed to stand her ground but it seems she has backed down. Strange!!

  5. Zambia’s debt SYNDROME will never improve. Had so much hope on LPM, now that he is gone , ni wanya wanya

  6. Why is it that when ever they seem to be a change in plot 1, airlines are affected

    KK – Zambia Airways.
    FTJ – Aero Zambia.
    LPM – Zambian Airways.
    Nyandule – Air Mukwayi.

  7. #4. Well. here is whats happenin…. The Post Newspaper injected about US$3million into Zambian Airways to take up 30% in equity. Lets not forget that this very post also endorsed Magande for President who was busy tryin to convince Ministers and Govt. institutions to fly with Zambian Airways on the routes it operates as a way of reducing the travel budget. Zambian Airways is also looking for US$4Million possible capital injection from ZSIC in order to improve the Zambian Airways balance sheet but in actual fact they really just need this money to survive. So, its up to you to judge whether there is a Matrix here or not….

  8. the Directors are not serious period. They should just put it up for sale so that people who are serious can manage it properly. remember SATA for President

  9. Zambian Airways pay up!. Am made to pay US DOLLAR just to enter pa Zed so that I can visit my grandmother. Mr. Banda ===the airports BOSS, Don,t allow Zambian Airways to land at any ZAMBIAN SOIL Airport UNTIL THEY PAY, THEN THEY WILL LEARN THEIR LESSON. Let them circle the whole country to find that big US Bill!

  10. If airlines like Alitalia and Ryanair can face serious operational problems, it shouldn’t be strange for Zambian Airways to be affected in a similar manner.

  11. This is the begining of the end. As it was in the days of Zambia Airways, so will it be in the days of Zambian Airways. History has a tendancy of repeating itself. Nikulimba…………….Finanga bantu.

  12. You do not have to be a rocket scientist or an economic guru to discern that all is not well at zambian airways. In their monopoly of wisdom, they removed a competent CEO and replaced him with an incompetent one Mutembo Nchinto with little or no experince at all in business affairs in at the lowest level. What is more annoying though is the Post’s futile and evil attempt to portray the airlines trobles to political machinations by RB. This is a lie from the pit of hell and should be dismissed outright. Thier downfall is their own making.

  13. The Inchito brothers must be ‘black-listed’ for incurring such a hugh debt.

I agree with Dora.. GRZ MUST NOT bail-out Private entities. This is poor management.

My suggestion is for GRZ to buy ZAmbia Airways and perform paper transcation between NAC and Min of transport.

Give the Nchito brothers some change and they must walk away. This is what is in the best Interst of the public.

We need a public Zambian Airliner – and Zambia Airways is there for the picking by GRZ.

  14. To start with, the Zambian Airways should fire Fredrick Banda from position of Finance Director. His competence is evident and doubt his loyalty to the business.
The Airline should list on the stock exchange(LUSE) to raise Equity for growth into profitable routes.
All debts being owed to the NACL, should be settled in a favorable manners which will make the airline survive and constant monitoring agreed for public interest
The shareholders of the company should be known.
Otherwise, Dora Siliya mishandled the case on the basis that she wanted to make political capital against Magande in favor of Rupiah. She was trying to smear magande to be corrupt. Her turnaround has just exposed her idiocy

  15. How cam Membe do such harm to RB and group and hope to get favours with his air line.
He is playing with fire. He will learn the hard way. If Membe thinks RB is a fool he should wait and see.

    Good luck Fred.

  16. They are Insulting the encumbent whilst soliciting for favours from the same.

‘Between a ‘hard rock’ and a ‘Frying Pan’.

On top of that they have to compete with British Airways AND Southafrican Airlines besides the local Airlines.

They have to pay passage fees through Zimbbwe and any other country they fly through.

  17. I glad Magande lost.some clowns were ready to use very undemocratic mean to save their backsides. Baby it dont work that way the man may be right in protecting Zambian airways but the right mean should be employed.

  18. I guess that is probably why the POST as a newspaper has lost objectivity and credibility. I see this paper tanking soon. If you noticed in the past week, they have been running articles saying something like I would be bad for the economy for Zambian Airways to fail and interview fake economic experts and all. Zambians are smart enough to read through all this POST crap. I think Membe should resign from the post if that paper is to have any credibility. They are not independent anymore. It is now being used to chart the business agenda of the board. What a shame. I wonder why some of you guys even subscribe to that business brochure of Fred Membe called the POST.

  19. Lelo Lelo Lelo , Nchitoz and Mmembe, u called ur colleagues thiefs now its ur turn to dance,Insansa kuchinjana banee.

Keith Mlevu – song -Inkongole should be played for them.

  20. its a dice one guys.Politics in Africa is inseparable from a business linked to a politician. One important thing to note is that nchinto bros are doing a commendable job BUT they thot they cant be touched.Fred meembe the same.Zambia needs the money go to the bank and get a loan dont hold the whole nation to ransom like the chinese.I would rather that money is given to well meaning SME’s to eleviate their businesses other than giving to Nchinto and meembe. The two guys have no heart -mercyless chaps

  21. Any sizeable firm that doesn’t incur debt, is in a low risk area, with low profits. Airline industries are oligopoly in nature and successful airlines require high fluxes in their liquidity. Unless equity is built over time there will be debt crises in such sectors. Governments and banking conglomerates are the only ones able to sustain such industries as they deal most with FDI. Mmembe’s political suasion aside, and the Nchitos war on corruption aside, what is happening to Zambia Airways has happenned to much more formidable companies than Zambian Airways. I find their ability to come this far, not only commendable but a great contrast to any claims to success most of us Zediasporans.

  22. National Airports need the money to run their company. ZSIC workers need benefits before their company restructures in December 2008.

Nchito’s we demand for the extension of the Task Force mandate to Levy’s legacy. Nchito’s time have come to account for the absorbitant legal fees paid from tax payers.

  23. As much as Zambian Airways brings pride to our country, there is no way that the govt should let it run with a negative balance sheet on expense of NAC, moreover,it is not a public company but a private one run by businessmen so what interest does the public or govt lose if it folds up?Yes,the debt repayment can be deferred but if the airline cannot come up with a feasible plan on debt repayment & pay for services as proposed by NAC then the company should be liquidated as it is not serving any purpose just like preceding airlines like Zambia Airways etc.If it’s making losses or just about managing ie working at ‘break even point’ then what’s the point of operating.

  24. #33 Ozzie Zedian

Same thoughts, they have simply worked hard and shown resilience unmatched, but it was bound to happen.

If they had restricted themselves to local routes perhaps it would have been different.

The International Airline business requires huge investment and liquidity.

The best option for them is to declare bankrupcy. Period.

  25. HERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS
1: THE NCHITOS DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THOSE BILLIONS OF KWACHA FROM LEVY’S GOVERNMENT – TASK FORCE TO BE SPECIFIC

2: THEY BOUGHT ZAMBIAN AIRWAYS WITH NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENS IN THE AIRLINE BUSINESS.THEY JUST WANTED TO SPEND THE TAX PAYERS MONEY.

3: THE CHAPS FIRED THE PERSON WHO KNEW WHAT GOES ON IN THE AVIATION SECTOR

4: THE CEO WITH MASSIVE EXPERIENCE WAS REPLACED BY A LAWYER. LAWYERS NEED TO APPRECIATE OTHER PIPOS QUALICATION.

I THINK NACL SHOULD NOT ALLOW ZAMBIAN AIRWYS TO CHARGE DEPARTURE FEES TO THE TICKET.LET PIPO FLYING ZAMBIAN AIRWAYS PAY AT THE AIRPORT.IT BETTER FOR ME TO PAY THE BOMA THAN THE NCHITOS AND POST WHO THINK WE ARE ALL DULL AND

  26. let them list it on the stock market..that way they’ll raise a considerable amount of money that can service part of the debt…then they can get into some sort of payment plan for the rest of the debt…alternatively, they can sell a percentage to someone willing to invest in the airline…

  27. Malupenga and M’membe have gone into overdrive insulting RB and MMD leaving Zambian Airways sinking like a titanic. They wanted Magande to keep sheilding their imcompetency using public funds year after year.We are changing ownership or bringing a new Airline altogether.RB does not need the the insulting and malicious Post to reach out to Zambians as Malupenda seems to play kindergatten politics on him.The chicken has come to roast.Dr.Kamoyo Mwale father of Anti Money laundering and latcheting will clean the house and bring ethics.Dr.Mwale for Home Affairs Shikapwasha out from MoHA.

  28. #33 i like your approach of seeing beauty in ugly situations.
i am just wondering if people would still be so critical if there were other names involved apart from mmembe and nchito.
pardon my ignorance, but what would be so wrong with the government helping out Zambian Airways regardless of it being a private business?

  29. The cost of fuel especially jet A 1 the fuel used by aeroplanes is extremely expensive. Many average world airlines with more customers than Zambian Airways have realised it is not possible to continue running due to fuel costs & have been shut so what’s so special about Zambian Airways,i would also be worried if the govt thinks of setting up a national airline now because we are not in a position to run it effectively due to associated costs,it will mean forgoing other meaningful projects to run a company that will be making losses from inception.

  30. Too much cheap thinking on this blog. What is happening with Zambia Airways is a problem beyond individuals guys and stop dreaming that this or that one is responsible.XL a tour operator in UK has gone bust owing to the unstable and souring factors on the global market.Lehman Brothers Bank in the USA has also been put into Administration owing to the same reasons. Ittalia airline also went into bust the other day. There are strong indications that the situation may be worse in the coming weeks and months.Read and research widely before you post your comments.

  31. Can you imagine what Brothers Sakala, Bulaya, FTJ, Musonda (zanaco), Kalumba, and all percievd plunderers think. ANSWERED PRAYER.

lET HIM WHO STAYS IN A GLASS HOUSE THROW STONES

  32. Too much ukulyamo pa zed, basakala balifulisha! Bamambala in Govt were using Zambian Airways on many regional tours with LPM and they did that on funny deals hence the company is owing so much. Ask ba mudala ba Magande he knows better and he can explain exactly whats going on!

  33. Why should the who nation be held at ramsom by fred and nchinto? I have a feeling even the Post is in financial troubles as well. Or how can one explain the late deveries of the newspaper even along the line of rail. At times this paper arives at 17hrs in places like Ndola just as we are knoking off. At one time Jonas Shakafuswa claimed that employees at the post were not paid for two months until the post sold the famous slaughter story about shakas. Cant wait to see the post go under.

  34. What expertise do the Nchito brothers have as far as running an airline is concerned? These are very turbulent times in the airline industry with regards to high oil prices. Airlines therefore need expert managers with a proven track record in airline mgt. The Nchito’s, with what’s happening, cannot offer this.

But I encourage govt to intervene in this issue as 200 jobs (not to mention the many dependents) are at stake here.

  35. Wake up you guys. Zambian Airways was being run using state funds. The nchito brothers agree with me 100%. Thats were the problems are coming from. LPM has gone with the working capital. Ba makaka ba tubomfya pafula.

  36. #43, good point, Let the NACL, start collecting the departure fees direct from those using Zambian Airways. That will remove at least 20 dollars per passenger burden on the Airline debt accumulation( But they will lose 1 month cash flow leverage).

Rupiah and his cronies will be making big mistake should they push the switch to kill Zambian Airways for political vendattas or mileage. We dont need such leaders or individuals who can see beyond finish lines..

Dora’s line of argument was quite un constructive and retrogressive to Zedian entrepreneurship. How many debt relief have we given to the mines and foreign investors. ZA, has a debt which they agreed to honor..so what is the problem.

  37. Lets have Richard Branson with Virgin Zambia, forget about putting money in Zambian Airways, if they can not afford to pay US 2 million, then they are useless.

  38. This ariline is a private entity. If the government have the money to bail it out let them use the money for other social projects that will benefit the millions on Zambinas living in poverty. The airline does not in any way contribute the the national economy but in a liablity now because we can see it is affecting NAC and it other creditors. If every Zambian opened a business, failed to run it, accrued debt then the governent bailed them out that would be nice, but totallly unreal. They thought they could run an airline but have failed, simple!

  39. Shidada, You are fool no wonder you will continue to be a financial refuge with nothing to show. 2million dollars is a lot of money in Zambian terms.
You think Richard Branson is a fool like you to just wake up one day and click of invitations an start an airline in Zambia.
By creating a viable airline, Zambian Airways may stand a good chance to be acquired by venture capitalist like Richard or even negotiate code sharing.

  40. #27 you are right. I also wonder how people could subscribe to a paper like The Post whose fees are exorbitant and its news or commentaries are suspect.

  41. While we apprecaite what Zambian Airways has done to this country from the time it was born, the Airline needs to also be mindful of their business obligations. The fact that fuel costs are high does not warranty them to difault because by doing so they are not MEETING their business obligations.I believe for NAC to come out like that, it means that they have done their part(paper work). If they have problems like they are now, they need to look at other posible options like listing (LUSE) to raise some additional capital unlike keeping their counterparts(NAC) in suspense. They need to bold enough and face NAC before its too late. We have no airline in Zambia to talk about.

  42. Can someone tell me if Mutembo Nchito has any experience in running a business? I respect the fact he may be one of the best lawyers in Zambia, but running a law firm and running a business are two different things. So these post chaps should not turn this issue into a political issue. I do not sympathise with RB, but the issue here is that the Directors have failed to run the company. Period!

  43. HK @#55 Dora was right firstly by saying the matter falls under her Ministry & by saying a single Minister ie Magande cannot decide to defer the payment,Cabinet should have sat & decided.
Secondly, you’re saying if govt can ‘help out’ mines then what’s wrong with helping out an airline, well, there is a difference, mines produce Zambia’s main source of income, copper. What benefits does Zambian Airways bring apart from flying our national flag, why should pride come first?Entrepreneurship is a process of pursuing opportunity and using borrowed assets to create value but what value is Zambian Airways bringing?

  44. #56 So umona kwati what we say here can have an impact on ANYTHING? Uli chipuba kanshi iwe. Tiyenifye tule sabaila apa bane. Ulefwaya ukuba serious fyakwe ifyo naifye fweba sabaila mutuleke after all no one asked you to read there comments skanka iwe.

  45. #63. All business owners are special kind of people. If Fred Mmembe can start a company like the POST and grow the way it is today..he can run any other Business, if he has the right pipo in place.
If Nchito Brother can run their Law firm and many other business they own, then there is nothing special in running a company like Zambian Airways.
All businessmen make mistakes, If u want to be a businessman, then mistakes are part of life.
The fact which remain to be discovered is whether, The ZA management have been running the airline prudently and has been adhering to corporate governance..Did management siphon money to fund other ventures at expense of paying obligatory fees..

  46. It may sound like a good idea to list the airline on LUSE but in the end it’s those that will take the rsk to buy shares who will cry to the govt when they lose their investment because nothing much will come from refinancing the airline due to the same associated costs.Do people realise that it’s probably not only NAC that ZA is indebted to,am sure their bankers, other shareholders are already crying.

  47. Iyi issue ili tricky and its been complicated even more by the behaviour of The Post and it’s Mr Know-it-all (Fred). Its very difficult to say whether those guys should be bailed out because their seems to be a lot of hidden interested parties in the backgrounds. If the government comes out and helps them straight, it ll be like helping a small number of rich Zambian to be even richer. On the other hand if they are left t fold up, we might miss the best chance of having a national carrier again. My verdict: Nationalise it, give bena Nchito na Fred Ama Zale each and let the walk

  48. #65 whats your beef??? some people on this blog talk nonsense. if you dont believe that just take a look at some of the posts above. I didnt mention any names but if i hurt your feelings sorry mune.

  49. For your own information Bloggers the Post itself is in a serious fiancial crisis, ask the post employes hw things have changed there,,most of the monies were channeled to Zambian Airways,,lets see what the sacreed M’membe and nchito are going to do over this,,,,UBUPUBA BA STUPID IMWE

  50. Zeddy: The comment from Dora, are a flashback after condemnation from many sector of the economy.
The issue of fees has been on the table for the past many months. Dora, started issuing counter productive comments about her counterpart minister for obvious reasons after declaring support to her candidate RB. Denying the political mileagegate is like denying that RB was distributing sugar not for political mileage as well.
The govt of Zambia in the 5NDP has Tourism as one of the sector needed to develop and already it has shown considerable growth. I don’t have to educate you on how important air travel is to this industry.
ZA is not asking for debt cancellation..but Restructuring.

  51. I STRONGLY SYMPATHISE WITH ZAMBIAN AIRWAYS,HOWEVER THE SHOULD PAY FOR THEIR INCOMPETENCE AND DOUBLE DEALINGS.SHAME TO FRED MEEMBE AND TEAM FOR SLANDERING RB IN ONCE YOUR POPULAR PAPER.HAVE YOU HEARD THAT ONE OF THE BIGGEST PRIVATE BANKS IN AMERICA HAS SIGNED FOR BANKRUPTCY-LEE MAN BROTHERS,THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS IN A LIBERALISED ECONOMY.

  52. Fred Mmembe kawalala wa munthu using press to destroy people. Nchito brothers will one day face corruption charges for over-invoicing and eating with LPM and magande. Did you hear the amount that Sata paid him to make up and to run his campaign.Z$1,000,000,000,000( ?Zim Dollars)

Just like he dug FTJ’s birth certificate in DRC this criminal masquarading as a journalist will meet his fate. This is Zed Time will sort him out.

Iwe chi Mmembe stop being childish and go and make peace with RB et al. Ulibe nzelu!

  53. I was thinking about this. RB distributing sugar. Under the law, that is not corruption because he has not filed in his nomination even if the election date has been anounced. But the point is why anounce the election date, then delay the filling in of nominations. This is the chance for RB to do all sorts of dirty politics using goverment funds before being bound by the law.

LT what can you say about this.

  54. Good response, HK (#66). But i still stick to my guns. I think Airline business is a special kind of business that requires special skills to run it. And the fact that Mutembo has not been paying particular attention to the growing debt is incompetence itself. As much as ZA may be owned by the Nchitos and the Post, it is a very important entity to the economy, and requires prudent management. Let the owners of ZA appoint directors that will take the company forward. Company law states that directors have a duty to protect the interests if the shareholders, and if they fail in this duty, then out they go!

  55. #21 Try to download Real Player from coppernet.zm

Mmembe thought that he was very clever. They say “Chili pali muzako lelo, chizankala pali iwe mailo”.

    What goes around comes around.

  56. One surprising thing is that the ECZ talked about it as just by the way and with no emphasis. These are the problems we always have during election time when we start seeing people recieving mealie meal and sugar the things they normally do not recieve when there are no elections.

  57. Yaba,I getting a headache trying to figure out facts from fiction. This mambo jambo is being mostly contributed by people how are not in Zambia. Nevertheless it is showtime at Zam-comedy.

  58. HK, what do you mean financial refugee? Does it matter where I chose to work and live? Just because you are in Zed does not make you more Zambian than me. Neither does living in Namibia make me a special Zambian. Why did SA let nationwide collapse? There is no need of wasting tax payers money on failed private companies. The Italians can afford to put money in the loss making Italia because they have money. The government here pumps billion of rand into Air Namibia, I guess they have the money. My point is Zambia should not waste money on Zambian Airways. If a company does not have US2 million, what do they have then?

  59. No 4 & 7, Those are pertinent questions.Answer is, too much petty politics in Zambia.Do not be personal to the Nchitos. The problem is global and if you knew, you would lend a helping hand to Zambian Airways and not vice versa. UK,USA govts have helped there businesses where possible. Read about the XL Holidays, Lehman brothers Northern Rock etc.The world economy is in turmoil.
In Zambia, we always want to push people down.Zambian Airways is Zambian, fact. Think positive. You want to despise the Nchitos coz they are working with the Task Force, how can we eradicate evils, when people start thinking like that. Instead, stop hero-worshipping thieves.

  60. #43 & #55 i agree with you 100% its only like Feb wen we started paying depature fees included in your ticked. to sum it all these guys had protection from LPM. pity. the best is for goverment to buy 50% of Zambiano and 50% should be in private hands. but the debt has to be paid, coz that money has oredi been collected by zambian airways they need to ask for more time and get tax free A1 fuel. Donald MacDonald was the best guy to run the airline, i have been delayed in JHB for 4 hrs, reason!!!mutembo Nchito was in court, there was no other person to authorise a refuel.

  61. HK,i agree with @71 when you say tourism is a sector that needs massive investment & promo & this goes hand in hand with a good transport network but reality is that in the last decade most airlines have struggled to operate profitably due to uncontrolable oil prices,it is now almost impossible to run an airline profitably & it will be so in the foreseable future due to the prevailing economic conditions which do not only affect Zambia but the whole globe, even State run airlines in developed nations are feeling the harsh reality so how can a small airline with borrowed planes, limited manpower & no financial muscle made worse by poor seat occupancy survive.Deferring debt won’t help.

  62. Zambian Businessmen should be encouraged at all costs. Very few of u think that big. Dont just speak stand and be better than the Nchitos or even Membe . We actually need more guys to own banks and more airlines, ships etc. Zambians simply need to get richer. NAC should actually be floated on Luse should also find a strategic partner. zambian Airports are PATHETIC

  63. Those of you talking about listing on the stock exchange get it, you list if you can convince the investors of meaningful return. In other words, how do you convince investors to invest in a debt ridden, unprofitable business.

Its like if you just open the gates, people will run in to rent your property. No ways, you as a potential investor needs to be convinced of your future returns. Not fantancy!

  64. It is the best news this year to hear that Zambian Airways is going burst. I’m so happy to hear that Fred Mmembe and the Nchito brothers are going down. I can’t wait to see them fold up. ZA is a private business and they have failed to run it. That is how things are. We have a lot of businesses in Zambia that need help, is the gov’t going to bail everyone out? I don’t think so. This was bad timing on the hands of whoever started this airline and they are making loses so it makes sense to shut down the company. Other Zambian business men and women will fill the void if they want to get into the airline business. I will give Zambian Airways 7 days and they should burst, yaba!!

  65. Great that NACL is doing its work as per its mandate. All Users of its services are obliged to pay. It would be the worst form of corruption to excuse Zambian Airways from paying for the services it has enjoyed. Allowing it to be excused would mean that all other Users would also deserve the same treatment, hence lead to the endangering of aviation safety and the standards expected of our airports.
The time for the Nchito brothers to be responsible is now. LPM is no longer there to cover up for any mischief.

  66. #87 I concur, more people should be encouraged to own businesses not Just the Post.

Entrepreneurship(sic) must be encouraged not indebtedness. I believe if these guys think hard enough, they can pull it off.

  67. Mujebeko mwebantu…
National airport is it not the same as intercity bus terminus…At intercity buses pay cash before departure, why cant national airports do the same to Zambian airways. Let them pay cash before the ndeke flyaway…
Mwebasambilila twebeniko before we send bakapoya to airport to assist us collect levy pandeke, des is simple logic…
Nchito iweee start paying cash, how come yo are mananging to pay yoselves salaries but amalevy mwafilwa…..
    GOGO pabwatoooooooooo mwapya baisa….

  68. HK

Are saying GRZ should overlook the continued insults by the Post which they are doing as a Political leverage to SATA.

A proud person will insult you thinking that his doing you a favour by calling you what you never knew you were.

How do you imagine that GRZ can do that.

  69. #91 no one is saying Zambians should not think big or run big businesses. People are forgetting that every business one starts is a risk, Mmembe and the Nchito gang took the risk and they have made loses, so they should pay up or go down simple as. Zambian Airways was at the forefront of blocking the idea of setting up a national airline just because they wanted to be making all the profits. I can’t wait to see post news paper go down too, I’m sick and tired of Mmembe and his paper’s constant tribal and dirty journalism, we don’t need such in Zambia right now. I don’t feel sorry for these fools. I just hope they lose more and more till the fold up then we can get into their market.

  70. 84, its the manner things are done in Zed, everything has been done privately wen did you know that the Post owned 30% these tu ma deals are done on restuarant tables. Doin business in Zed is very costly they should ve raised these issues wen LPM was alive our taxes are way too high. Alitalia is being resuscitated as we speak, coz pipo that side are open and transparent, here everything is on a personal level these guys are being pushed down coz they not on Sugar D side. did you read Ka Mulongotis remarks about the guys you lost? if he was next to me i would have slapt him we are still far from civilisation

  71. National Airports corporation should be held answereble in this instance because it was their responsibility to ensure that a customer due dilligence was carried out to ascertain Zambia Airways’ credit worthiness before granting them credit.

Maybe a business decision was made to accept the risk – these are the repercussions.

Whats needed is a business solution and not a political one. Is zambia airways viable as a going concern?? If so then Govt may help provided an acceptable payment plan is in place.

Its not always the case that govt should prop up ailing companies when the fundamentals are clearly flawed. Look at the case of Lehman Bros and M Lynch and learn from it.

  72. The problem at hand is that the Post is not helping. They choose to insult and want to bite the finger that feeds them.

Look what harm would it do, for Mmembe to go and kneel down and bootlick at GRZ’s feet. eh.

The Guy chose to go to SATA and hopes that SATA wins.

SATA has agreed with a cunning motive behind.

  73. What has happened to the Zambian Airways deal with Air Zimbabwe where ZA wanted to be using Air Zimbabwe to fly the Lusaka – London route, I guess that wont be happening now that Zim crisis is ‘over’, will it? We are waiting on the sidelines to take the ZA market and all thier customers, Mmembe azalila together with his friends the Nchito brothers. I’m sure FTJ is very happy to hear this great news. Please FTJ use your contacts to pull these fools down even more and Acting President Banda cage Mmembe please please, we want to see them down NEVER rise again.

  74. For all those calling for a bailout, where were you when Zambia Airways went down? QZ was a state owned airline, operating in a number of countries and it did not get a bailout

Zambian Airways is a private entity and should they collapse their market niche will be occupied by another company. Its not government’s job to bailout these companies and what is more what is to be gained from such a bailout?

Zambian Airways is cheap airline, it is not a major employer, it overextended itself by buying a fleet of vehicles and trying to look successful. This is the result, incompetence breeds bankruptcy

  75. If our GRZ is forward looking people, they should buy stake in this troubled airline and make it the national carrier. You cannot claim to be a top tourism destination without a national carrier.Petty politics aside, GRZ buy almost 40%, this will inject the much needed money to run this airline and get modern planes which are good on fuel comsumption. We cannot go on like this, even the Zim Govt can afford to run an airline and we can’t.

  76. #99 My fellow anonymous

You have such tenacity and consistency on this matter. You are straight forward on this issue and you are not beating about the bush.

Surely, FTJ must be thanking his gods for this ‘good fortune’

  77. Its not time to cry over spilt milk, but to fix problems at hand. I will not waste my time to talk about QZ, FTJ is still alive he can do that.Lets fix this problem at hand, otherwise, we will be in position of starting one from scratch which is ten times more difficult.

  78. The Post is not the wealthiest business in this country. But we were happy to stake our US $3 million in this business. The Post does not get any ngwee, kwacha, cent or dollar from Zambian Airways. Even the directors of Zambian Airways do not, unlike other directors, receive any sitting or other allowances.
This business has grown from a turnover of US $3 million in 2002 to US $40 million in 2008. And not a single cent of this has ended up in our pockets.

  79. Cont…We know that there are those who want to kill this business because one of its shareholders, ourselves, have been critical of Rupiah Banda and the people that surround his campaign for the presidency. Does Rupiah want to start his bid for the presidency by killing one of the biggest indigenously-owned Zambian companies?

  80. Cont…We are surprised that the Ministry of Transport can try to destroy a company, Zambian Airways, that has grown from carrying 30,000 passengers per annum in 2002 to carrying 250,000 passengers in 2008. This is the government that says tourism is its number two priority. We are not surprised because Chiluba and his tandem of thieves did the same with the state-owned Zambia Airways, QZ.

  81. The Post Bag

‘Does Rupiah want to start his bid for the presidency by killing one of the biggest indigenously-owned Zambian companies?’

What a question, what rhetoric, I applaud you for this.

In this question, is a clear inclination and biaseness yet seeking sympathy. I dont intend to go into details but suffice to say how do you wriggle yourselves out of this dichotomy.

Pride is an issue hear. The Zambian Airways is not the issue hear, it is down alright pride and selfishness and greed.

How many Zambians are shareholders in this COMPANY to deserve this kind of sympathy. Only a few rich Guys.

  82. i have been bloging Zambian Airways(ZNA) Site. ZNA appear to me like it is rolling out to much and to fast. i mean expanding too much. this may be detriment to a company especially if it is capitalising(buying assets. May be the questions i should ask are: How is ZNA financing the sudden growth? are they leasing, loan borrowing……?
At what cost are they leasing, borrowing,……? Did the Finace Executive carry out proper cost benefit analysis? What about the rising fuel affectng the world over, did ZNA carry out WHAT-IF-ANALYSIS to mitigate the impact of growth with increasing Fuel? There is definetely alot to be desired here.

What about the management issues? i Mean the enron saga!

  83. I don’t feel sorry for these scum bags M’membe and the Nchito brothers. Let them join the millions of Zambians in the streets ( street vending ) if they can’t pay up.

I for one would rather see the govt use that $1.9 stock medicines in our hospitals and clinics than bailing out these arrogant fools.

  84. I think it would be in no one’s interest to see Zambian air ways close up.

Have you already forgotten the sufferings that former Zambia air ways workers went through when the air line collapsed? Some of them are still sufferingto this very day.

Let us look at the bigger picture. The impact that such a move would have on the economy.

I support ideas of finding a solution that should see the air line survive these hard times. If the solution is charging the directors, that’s fine, as long as we avoid the suffering of the innocent Zambian.
Forget about names (Membe and Nchito ) put Zambia and its people first

  85. #101 you cant compare Zambian airways to zambia airways. u’re trying to campare a melon to an apple. Chiluba maliciuosly killed zambia airways where as zambian airways its in a bad time. they over borrowed. they were too fast for their growth. we still need them, i am a freaquent flyer with zambia airways.they have improved on their services. they employ a lot of our people here and in SA. so lets not be too harsh on them. iguess it just a Phase they are going thru so lets hope they get on their feet soon. most pipo posting comments aint in Zed, must cleaning deep friers in McDonalds take away or changing 84 year olds daipers in old age homes

  86. Cont..We are not surprised people believe that others look at material things the way they themselves do. We will not change our stance on Rupiah Banda just to save Zambian Airways or any other commercial interest of ours. We apologise to our friends in Zambian Airways but we are confident that they understand that a matter of principle is a matter of principle and cannot be negotiated or compromised upon.

If Rupiah and his cohorts want to kill the only meaningful airline this country has seen since the assassination of the state-owned Zambia Airways fifteen years ago, so be it. It will not be us to judge him, the people will.

  87. when GRZ decides to defer Zambia Airway payment, it is as good as ‘writing off’ the debt.

Zambian Airways must not be treated like a sacred cow. It is not GRZ institution. This debt indicate to me that the company is bankrupt. It also mean it has defaulted in many areas like tax and the like.

The most viable solution which is public interest is for GRZ to buy Zambia airway and hire competent aviation specialists to run the firm.

The invincibility of the INCHITO brothers is OVER. These guys have been bady-seated by GRZ for too long.. it is about time they left to fend for themselves.

  88. Post Brag, turnover can be used to measure how big a company is but what matters is the net profit.Turnover doesn’t mean a thing if the company is not meeting it’s financial obligations to it’s creditors & that list of creditors includes small ones like envelope & toilet paper suppliers so from that annual turnover of ‘US $40 million’ how much are they left with after all costs are paid & we now know most of these costs have not been paid so where is the money going then. How is NAC expected to meet it’s obligations of remitting funds into state coffers eg ZRA etc, carry out essential works to the airport & build more airports if Zambian Airways & probably of more airlines don’t pay dues

  89. Can ZESCO also sort out the mess they are creating. They installed a pre-paid metre at my home in August 2008. Same time I paid whatever I was owing (b4 the august bill was run) on the old account.
Last week I went to buy units for prepaid metre for K 100,000, they deducted K 40,000 saying it was off setting August bill.

Today I went to ask for statement for old account. Now notice what has happened:
    1) The old account is billed twice for the month of August
    2) The K 40,000 which was deducted when I bought units is not reflected on the old account
The woman I found (purpoted to be Manager at Manda hill branch) was not helful and she was very rude. Can someone sort out this mess.

  90. Its good that everything is known about the debt and thats the reason why meembe was in suport of magande.now that RB is the man, things have turned sour and you are alwayz attacking R.B here and there.Do you think that sata will cover you?.weather u you like it or R.B is the next president and you shall give what belongs to ceasar.

  91. We tracked all investments M’membe has put the plundered money in.To start with we will inviting all Zambians interested in rivaling the Post to come forward and get all incentives to get established & survive in the media industry. We will pull out all GRZ multi Billion Kwacha advertising annual businesses. No GRZ buy their copies as of no interest.Pull out all the unfair incentives they have long enjoyed nonparallel in the industry.Promote other promising tabloids, encourage best writers like Mr Jere-Executive issues, Masauso Phiri and crew M’membe forced out. Turn owners of new media giants.Strictly supervise and get taxes on all M’membe and Malupenga businesses & properties past due.

  92. #105 MAY BRAG ON THE ALLEGED SUCCESSES OF ZA AND THE MMEMBES.BUT WHY ARE THEY FAILING TO PAY THE DEBT IF THEY HAVE GROWTH. PLEASE DO NOT MIX BUSINESS AND POLITICS. WHEN BEGGING YOU DO NOT INSULT. THERE ARE MORE PRIORITY AREAS IN THE COUNTRY THAN BAILING OUT ARROGANT BUSINESS PERSONS WHO THINK THEY ARE MORE INTELLIGENT BY USING THE POST. DAYS ARE NUMBERED WINA AZALIRA.

  93. Yes what about the management issues? is mtembo nchito both the share holder and the Chief EX? If so you need not be suprised about these issues of failure to pay debt becoz it will be obvious….”missmanagemet”. My worry is if ZNA owes NAC US$1.9m then it is highly likely that they owe South Africa, Tanzania,Zimbabwe etc. much much more. The question is what is the payment strategy for ZNA? Why are they silent on how they intend to pay back?

As Zambians we need better airport facilities and to do so NAC need money. We are tired of an airport that looks like a locust bay! Look at joburg Int Air port it is world class. NAC you should also account for the Collections we need better services

  94. What the hell makes the Nchito brothers think that just because they are good lawyers then they make good businessmen? Dear readers, the guys bought St Johns hospital and have failed to run the hospital.
If they can’t take care of the patients thay have in the so called hospital where they have employed their bululus who don’t seem to know anything apart from drinking tea and watching TV, to look after peoples lives. What will make them run the airline industry very well. shame on you.

  95. Hah hah,Malupenga and M’membe have been too busy insulting every Zambian young and old with impunity.A curse has befallen them till they walk naked.I recall under KK such people would be pulled until they mentally become mentally disarranged and permanently die without ever getting employment or business. Tough luck guys the the Kamucheka are in control henceforth. Can M’membe and Malupenga fight them and win? I beat him.The RB administration will have more educated Kamuchekas they seconded to BOZ, ZISC,ZRA,ZCCM,ZESCO, NAPSA and for studies kubulaya. They have come to assert themselves. The list seen so far has more than 8 taking up strategic offices.

  96. i think we are taking issues of economics and finance lightly here. lets not debate name but the issues that an indigenous company is facing. first, Zambia’s fuel price is 40% higher than any other southern african country. secondly, this is a company competing again very big companies such as BBA,SA and so on. thirdly, we are a landlocked country, tourists coming to zambia have it easy when they get to SA to proceed to zambia. in short Zambian airways is the life line for tourism. leting it go down will be detrimental to that sector, like it or not. fourthly, zimababwe is just about to start the path of recovering, and if they do we start competing for tourist, without our own we can compete

  97. Fellow country men & women
I find your comments a little bit unfair.
dont you follow international business developments, dont we see how other airlines are struggling due to high fuel costs or we’re ignoring all these facts because the Post invested USD 3 million in zambian airways.

people lets be objective and stop behaving like PF cadres

  98. i find it hard that if the USA can come to the rescue of their companies that they feel mean lots to it own people, we can do it for our own. why do always want to follow the book economics and not the real economics? ZA issues is of bread and butter for the people working there. it has helped to put to good use of the professionals in the aviation industry. let us for once be proud of our own and help them grow. lets stop this PULL HIM DOWN (PhD) syndrome.

  99. Zambians please dont turn yourselves into laughing stocks. There is nothing wrong with Zambia Airlines accumulating a $1.9m debt. All companies in the world have debts at one time or another. If this were not the case your so called copper mines wouldnt be where they are today. KCM and Lumwana are expanding on borrowed money. If their creditors were to be as insensitve as Dora Siliya and the Zambian govt and demand payment ‘immediately’ the mines would collapse. The comments on this thread just show how backward Zambians are in understanding the workings of a capitalist system.

  100. 111 Nyau
Your concerns were right ion the spot. I worked for QZ for many years and had a bit of knowledge on airlines operations aquisitions and financing. When we started hiring frequently that Zambian Airways had bought this and that aircraft and had introduced several cheap fares. I remarked to a collegue that they were expanding too fast and soon the bubble would bust. I wondered where the money was coming from to purchase aircraft outright when there fares were below the table. How were they financing the purchase of these aircraft. clearly something was not right.

  101. #130

Do you understand that FTJ developed heart problems because of The Post and its croonies.

Try telling him that besides Bulaya, Sakala, Musonda and the rest.

  102. Mbulawa

I dont think Zambians are as backward as you think. Look businesses that have a good portfolio will easily get funding from banks. In which case Zambian Airways could do. It appears that this idea of approaching the banks has failed and they have resorted to GRZ.

Do you suppose that if Zambian Airways was that viable, they would have failed to get funding from the banks?

It is very normal yes for business to borrow and to run on credit but on a premise of an assured good return.

  103. #22 iwe herbz download vlc player then go to znbc website and you will see links to radio stations just click whichever you want then the small file will be downloaded then find it wherever you saved then drag and drop it onto the vlc player then about five seconds you will mvela

  104. These are bad times! Nchito Brothers and Freed Membe should stop being selfish! Zambian Airways should move fast and sell some shares! Other wise it will go under!! Negotiations shold start now. Otherwise the company will go under. The Best option is to sell 60% shares to NACL or Zambian Governmnt! Look what the American Governmnt has done to Merill Lynch!

This is a timely and free advise!!

  105. “Quidquid recipitur ad modum recipientis recipitur”, translated “That which is received is received according to the mode of the receiver”. We cannot expect and allow the Post to be objective judges of their own business interests. Zambians should wake up and demand what the Post has been demanding from others: Truthfulness and Just dealings. Dora needs support, I remember her when she debated against our skool in the late eighties, she was sharp, but now she is in the danger of being tainted by politics. The post and the Nchito brothers have to be treated as everyone else, otherwise we should just forget about the corruption cases, rule of law and natural justice.

  106. Zambian Airways is an experiment going miserably wrong, they were trying to see if it could somehow be converted to Zambia Airways. Government should save the airline if possible.

  107. The Directors are deliberately avoiding to pay so that the company goes under liquidation – meanwhile they will have pocketed the profits. The law is weak so they will easily form another company and call it KUCHENJELA Airways, and they will be allowed to get loans, again go under and so on and so on and the drama continues.

    I have seen this happen.

  108. I think this ka ma Zambian Airways Debt has something to do with ba LPM, why wasn`t it exposed when he was still alive and at full throttle?
Am worried with such exposures, the legacy might just be stripped off the man who worked hard to earn it,especially with Judas and Fred at each others neck!!!
    M.H.S.R.I.P

  109. Nchito Brothers, Membe should sell even 70 of the shares of the Airline to Governmnt. This is just a tip of an iceberg!! How much do they oweservice providers in other countries. Its time fo Governmnt to act now. Once the Airline is taken over we shall revive Zambia Airways and team up with other repurtable partners. Chinese, Indians, Japanese are always good to us.

  110. Zambians, why are you so myopic? Look beyond the Post and the Nchitos and look at the Airline as a Zambian company that aides in the promoting of Zambia as a tourist destination. We all know that airlines world over have suffered greatly because of the high prices in fuel and if this global trend will make us say that the company must be closed then we are looking behind and not into the future. SAA has asked for billions of rands from its govt to bail it out and the SA govt killed Nationwide because it was competition to state owned SAA. FTJ and his cronies overzealously killed ZA when it was a sate entity, I hope we can look in the future and hold on to ZA…

  111. cotnd…Our govt is now preaching citizen economic empowerment, in the light of killing ZA, is it not going against that which they are preaching? Or is CEE also meant to benefit the few in govt?

  112. Zambian Airways, need to find a way of raising money and pay off the debt. I believe the airline is run by people without the business acumen who can generate and be able to sustain the wealth. What is their vision for next five years? They need to diversify their business portfolios. For example the airline can save some money if it does away with serving free meals or beverages, if at all it does that. They can also do away with non viable routes and concentrate on routes that are profitable. They can also do away with unnecessary conditions of service for their top executives such as company vehicles, free gas and other lucrative conditions. Again, these are just short term measures.

  113. These guys should just swallow thier pride and approach GRZ for a possible take over.

That would free them from this burden.

Hoewver, how prepared is GRZ to do this? IT WOULD REQUIRE MORE THAN AN INJECTION OF MONEY. The fact is that the Airline has been operating on loss most of its life. So it would definitely need an overhaul in terms of management and capacity building.

Its present circumstances could be just a tip of the iceberg. Therefor an overall accessment of its worthiness must be done before any capitalisation.

  114. who is this that wants to know the two children mentioned in mwanawasa’s will? Do you think they’ll adopt you as the child mentioned in there? Hooooo, wanya mambala!

  115. Its sad that Zambian Airways is facing this problem. My summary:
Stock Exchange: Not practical people invest in viable ventures not companies needing aid.
Govt Intervention: What criteria will be used to choose which comapny to help and which one not to help, remember its setting a precedence (Pakupoka ichinsenda kunkoko Kunakilila). With the way fred is behaving it will be difficult for him to be helped by RB (its like in the old days when youre interested in a chick you start by shouting at them!! thats old school!).Every Dog has its day

  116. For those trumpeting for HH, I have news for you, Hakainde Hichilema has no political skills to win an election…..just look at him!

  117. While all that is being said has merit, let us consider our real motives. What shall we gain by drowning the only local airline that carries our national flag? No Zambian Airways, No Zambian Airline period! Where is our pride? Honestly, the ZA management have worked so hard to bring the company where it is today.Consider that it is so hard to obtain credit in Zed.They have gone against all odds to do what ordinary Zambians never have. And we should allow them to sink for this? Come on pipo.JElASI yayi! Its not like they are refusing to pay.Its sad that we let the government give tax holidays to foreign companies but we are so noisy when some leniency is shown to fellow Zambians.Tekanyeni bane!

  118. RB has nothing to do with zambian, the post can say or support who they like RB RULES,when zambia airways went bust KK WAS OUT OF OFFICE the hour had come for criminals to plunder

  119. I think Zambian Airways is bankrupt!!The company got burst sometime back and they have been faking their balance sheets for sometime. The airline management is just too poor!! What reasons are they giving?? They have sofar been quiet and just waiting to be told to vamoose!! Lets try to bail them off and if not just take over this Airline if they cant afford to pay!!

I hope these noise makers wont use the credit crunch in the US as one of the major problems. NCL and Communications Ministry have been lenient with them but now they have lost their patience with these crooks!!

  120. i think they just have to offload the shares so that credible business men to run the company if anything why should the government start solving private company problems… am sure the are serious problems that need the attention of Government like the revamping the Nitrogen chemicals of Zambia(NCZ) this will help a lot Zambian Farmers unlike worsting our tax pays money on this few individuals who drive hammers and Jaguars

  121. The problem is lack of proper supervision. It is ridiculous to say they should now pay weekly. They should have been paying weekly from the beginning. Also, the story does not say if the problem is that the airline has been making losses and is therefore unable to pay or if the problem is one of transmitting the money – the latter would be a joke!

  122. I now understand why Fred M’membe behaves in such a manner. He suffers from an inferiority complex because of his urgly shapeless little head. He should be advised to stop hiding his urgly head by putting capes at all times. God created him like that for a purpose.

  123. Pull Him Down syndrome will kill us. No 104,114,115, I totally agree with you. The idea now is to fix the problem, and not looking at the Nchitos & Mmembe. Those are already rich and its the poor Zambian employee that will suffer. We need solutions to sustain the few Zambian companies that employ our people at all costs.
Iam worried that most of these people calling for the collapse of Zed airlines are the people who will represent us in voting. They cant analyse issues. There is only one ZAMBIA, and no one will come to set up companies for you. Pertiness, shall kill us.
By the way, its not all Zambians abroad who work in MCDONALDS. The qualifications from UNZA& CBU are used everywhere.

  124. This financial hole is of their own making. How in the world can one expect get away with such a thing!?

This is either gross incompetence or dishonesty – nothing else.

  125. Gentlemen,Zambia is a country full of Educated people that are not part of policy making, its sad to say that the only educated leader we had never lasted long enough( MHSRIP),though he too had his wrongs here and there.
We can all complain about M’membe or Nchitos and whatnot, but the truth of the matter is,we let our country be controlled by “Chips from the old block”with long fingers that always want to tap into anything that smells like money.
Believe you me, if you go behind the scenes of Zambian airways, there are many long fingers trying to tap.The m’membes know better, hence the hesitation to do what is right.
My view is,GRZ should have started this airline in the first place…

  126. What about the external auditors why did they not pick this up and highlight it in their opinion and who are they even? Its all about the money in the end.

  127. Like in other countries, governments usually run national airlines and private hands do run theirs too..
why can’t that happen in Zambia?
Its high time we moved strides away from leaders who are self centered or electing people who only wants to fatten their bellies and those that have the same logic as our past pathetic leaders of our Great nation and who have been a hindrance to our economic progress of our great mother Zambia.

  128. HK #,
You are too dumb and epileptic. Do ever take your time to understand things before blogging? Hear me, Fred Banda is not an employee of Zambian airways but polished Financial Director with BBA, MBA and MPA working for National Airports corporation. please read the story again.

  129. Anonymous from the UK, anything person with Fred you seem to be ranting endlessly about the small bald headed hat wearing man? Nishani kanshi?

  130. I think the expansion was too rapid. They have failed to handle rapid growth which they were seeking. In business, its always wise to go for steady growth bcoz it can be managed. They should have stuck to only 1 international Flight-(the joburg one) and maintained as many local routes as possible to learn the nitty gritz of the airline industry. Yes there was an opportunity noted Zambia Airways was gone but a comprehensive business case wud have instituted.

  131. How many people have asked Dora Siliya as Transportation Minister “What she has done to improve transportation? What she has put in place for another airline?” How can we as a country be using South African Airways to travel?

The only reason Lehman and M Lynch have not been helped is because America is very bankrupt from the Iraq war.

The message from this airline issue has not been understood by most- the message that we as a country need to be ashamed that we have no airline of our own!

We spend too much time praising ministers that are quick to say No to projects than ministers that offer solutions. We need to stop criticizing each other and focus on solutions.

  132. WHY SHOULD GOVT RESCUE YOU…WHEN EVERY THING WAS OK WITH. YOU DID EXERCISE CORP. SOCIAL RESPOSIBILITY. NOMBA LILIA IFNTU FYAPENA MULEFWAYA AMAHALF WESU. REMEBER YOU REFUSED TO HELP ME WITH THE TICKECT WHEN COMING FOR MY STUDIES.NOW IF YOU TALK ME ME NICELY I CAN BAIL YOU OUT

  133. Fred Mmembe is used to running businesses by hook and crook. When The Post had problems in the late 1990’s, he got a US$100,000 loan from MISA Zambia, which he bluntly refused to repay (not even a single coin) boasting that he was a founder MISA member so he had to benefit. To date that debt has never been rep[aid to MISA Zambia, which was ZIMA then. This is the money he used to re-invest in Thde Post and buy machinery. Am sure he is trying to use the same approach here with Zambian Airways. The man is not what people think. He is basically a crook, who garbs himsl;ef in the gown of socialism! As they say though, each dog has it’s own day!!!

  134. #172 Observer, That has already been corrected. Dont be as dumb as yourself again by repeating the same correction when all you are talking about is nothing.

  135. Why does, this so called fly-by “journalist” think he sets the Agenda for nation? Using his tabloid paper, he “destroys” his perceived enemies and flip-flops on various issues. He pushed hard to have Magande as the next MMD Presidential candidate. Why? Few people know the truth about him. Please, join me in revealing the “whole truth and nothing but the truth” about this guy. Help me with my research on “Fred Mmembe Agenda”.

    Email me in confidence:

  136. “Lower taxes and more money in people’s pockets” has always been the PF and Sata’s slogan. Is this when HH realizes that taxes have to be reduced? I think HH needs to be more original and stop plagiarizing other party’s campaign platforms!

  137. Obviously this needs a REGROUP, RE-STRATEGIZE. It will help improve the system greatly and avoid similar situations for the future. So ba bwana Finance Director, a Banda, this is your LESSONS LEARNED; and your question going forward: WHAT IS THE STRATEGY AS WE MOVE FORWARD — WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO? ASK Zambian Airways for their proposed ACTION PLAN. What do they propose as a payment plan for now and the future and what is the guarantee? Call that meeting with Zambian Airways to lay everything on the table. Be firm and take charge. Do what is necessary to be back on track. That is a good manager.

  138. Any GOVT GRZ included has the responsibility to try and save strategic industries from going under. After the demise of Zambia Airways ,Aero Zambia,it would be prudent for GRZ to intervene in this matter.

Having said that the management of Zambian Airways sought political solutions to their business problems hence the drama we are witnessing now.

The Zambian people are now able to see the linkages between the POST,Zambian Airways,Magande et al and will most likely because of this ,oppose any well intended attempts to rescue the airline.

We suspect that the airline will be confined to the sad history of failed businesess in a few weeks time.

  139. This issue should invetigated. Mmembe strong support for Mangande gives thought for the mind. Mangande is in support of Zambian Airways. Mmembe is equaly Corrupt. Who takes the presidence take this serious i can see minister trying to wash there hands

  140. The Late President was a shareholder in Zambian Airways… Thats why Nchito cant be protected now. Too Late!!

  141. #49, Boyi the people you mention are plunderers while the Nchitos and Mmembe are not. Let’s be mature in our arguments. Zambian Airways has never been run with taxpayer monies. We have too many ignoramuses on this forum who spout stuff without facts. If you can’t prove your statements, I suggest that you are just jealous and you deserve to be ignored.

  142. #189, Angel, stop smoking that crap. US airlines are always being bailed out, are they being plundered? If you don’t how markets and economies operate, keep quiet. How much was plundered form Zambia Airways? Give us figures? Don’t be a parrot. Just because The Post said it so, doesn’t make it so. Those are just politics. You are in the US, you should know that not every one in prison is a criminal. But the media makes it like that. How much has Mmembe and Nchitos made out of the so called investigations? Tonnes of millions.

  143. #190, Kalos2020, you are actually agreeing with me except for the tonnes of millions part which I did not state. My comment was about producing facts and backing up ones’ claims. Can you back up your claim for the “Tonnes of Millions” that Mmembe and the Nchitos have made? Don’t be malicious and spout off crap that you cannot defend.

  144. Listing on LUSE presents other challenges.Investors know about the company’s inability to settle it’s debts, this casts negative investor confidence.Obviously it has become difficult for them to make a profit or they have grossly mismanaged the company.I,for one, would not make the mistake of buying shares in a company which is on the verge of bankruptcy. It is plain to see that they are having liquidity problems. Zambian businesses need to appreciate the importance of recapitalization, employing experienced managers, and managing profits prudently.Although a government bail-out would save the company, it is not in the public interest as this is a private company benefiting it’s owners

  145. #190,Kalos 2020

Airlines in the US are bailed out because they are publicly listed companies.Apart from the US government trying to to preserve people’s jobs, investors in these companies stand to lose billions if they let the company go under. However, even when the government bails them out, it institutes regulatory frameworks to curb corruption and mismanagement. If the company’s liquidity does not improve even after government intervention, the last option is to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.Ever wondered why government has not come to the aid of GM and Ford motors.

  146. If you understood me I was giving an example about plundering and going belly up. Your statement is factual and nobody is debating that, but the way they have categorically smeared FTJ and his government as plunderers, meanwhile the economy is basically the same as FTJ left it.

  147. The position of the Post (viz-a-vis any government bailout for Zambian Airways) should not be a suprise to anyone who knows the shareholders of the said airline. The following are the principal shareholders in Zambian Airways:

    Mutembo & Nchito 57.5%

    National Milling 12.5%

    Post Newspaper 30%

The Post Newspapers should just “shut up.” They have no intergrity in this issue at all. And if they had any self-respect left, they should have recused themselves from any discussant role in this issue.

  148. Stop buying The Post it’s a waste of money instead give that money to starving Zambians instead of the Post bullies.

  149. I think zambian goverment can also do the same,,there is nothing wrong in saving a company that is about to collapse,,,,,just give them a loan

US Government bails out AIG with $85 billion loan (AP)
AP – For the second time this month, the U.S. government put taxpayer money on the hook to rescue a private financial company, saying the failure of the huge insurer American International Group Inc. would…

  150. Zambian Airways must be supported, deffering payment does not mean cancelling what their owe. Whoever owns the company is immaterial. This is all about economic citizen empowerment. We need to support each other in difficult and good times. Zambia can only develop if if its citizen run big corporate entities. If the airline business goes under a lot of workers in the hosipitality industry will suffer. Look at the mines, some of them (so called investors)have not paid the taxes there are supposed to pay and no one in government is pushing them. Stop this pull him down syndrome.

  151. I agree with #115!!!!!!!! most of the people sending these comments on the blog are not in Zambia. Its those frustrated zambian busturds in USA, UK,AUSTRALIA. These people are living on mc Donald burgers and are shy to come back home. Zambians overseas are the worst sufferers and are jealous of people back home. Just come back before matubi abazungu confuse you. These people have stopped thinking.

  152. MATUBI ABAZUNGU ZOONA NA ABACHITA CONFUSE BAKU BULAYAA! NO WONDER THEIR THINKING IS SO SHALLOW. TOO FRUSTRATED OVER PIPO DOING WELL MUZAMBIA. JUST COME BACK HOME EVERYONE IS DRIVING NOW MU ZED NOT A MA PRITENCE UKO!!

  153. #202 203. If driving is a measure of wealth or how well a country is doing then Zambia is still a very poor country. Go and research.

You must be a very frustrated foreigner looking at your flag, or are you one of these who work in foreign lands because a certain Mwanawasa (RIP) appointed you to go and work?

Grow up you “tool”. There is more to life than just driving.

  154. What more to life? Mukundya or Kundyewa ku bazungu at MORE TO LIFE! HA HA! JUST GO BACK HOME SO YOU START THINKING. YOUR WRITING SOUND LIKE YOU ARE TOO TIRED? SAME JOBS KA? ATI NDEYA KUNCHNTO!!

  155. 1.When a Zambian is FAT ishi BADYELA.

2.When a zambian gets K30 MILLION as salary ninshi ana wina.

3.When a Zambian owns 5 Mansions ninshi ana wina.

4.When a Zambian owns a Pajero and a number of other fleets.

    YES and NO relativity dependant.

    1. Could be as a result of soya packed diet.

    2. Could be after no less than 10 years experience.

    3. Could be substand ‘mansions’ attracting little market attention.

    4. Could be Japanese reconditioned cars.

So the answer is YES and NO.

A lot of Chaps abroad can hardly own even a second hand car.

Therefore pa ZED to lelia bwino.

  156. No# 206 yes you are too right, these chaps cant even own a second hand car indeed. But how could they, if they cant even afford a normal healthy meal baba?

  157. #199 I agree with you.

The POST also stated that they will have nothing to do with SATA. Saturday POST had SATA on page 1. Did I miss anything which changed the POST stance?

Events of recent times have really made me lose interest in the POST.

  158. Fred has always preached virtues. He should therefore be in a position to practice them.At the rate things are moving i see him being imlicated into some funny arrangements.Ateke bola panshi.

  159. It is interesting reading the posts on zambian airways, and the possibility of the GRZ bailing it out. Recently the USA govt bailed out AIG from collapse. Why can’t zambian GRZ bail out zambian airways?

  160. it seems Sata must have promised the nchitos and mmembes something for them to forgive sata and start campaigning for him and doing the opposite for RB. shame on the post behaving like armatures. you are being partisan. Sata also changes from getting rid of the Chinese in fear that they may take the stadium away from Zambia. I thot sata was mature but to me and many other zambian think he is childish. His support will come fro the Kaponyas and vendors coz he spaeks their language. He down goes the POST newspaper. They supported magande at first now, he is no more they look for someone else meaning they only had their interest and not for Zambia. HOPE the nchitos and mmembez suffer.

  161. ON ZESCO

Ba Nsaja go to school man and get eduacted on bills settlement and what happens when u don’t pay yo bills.

Mwilakongo nga tumufwaya ukulipipili man. Use power and pay then u ll ve no complaint that is how some of ve learnt to live, kuleni!!!

  162. #212 the US govt bailed out AIG becoz the company is publicly listed and it could cause a major tremor on the market if it was lost to go burst. ZA on the other hand is a privately owned company and govt would only be bailing it out for sentimental reasons. But there are so many more relevant and beneficial companies in zambia that need capital injection (eg nitrogen chemicals of zambia). The Post’s interest in having ZA bailed out is not bcoz they think it is beneficial to the nation; its all bcoz of their $3m which is stuck in the airline. ZA’a gains and profits are private, why should their risks and losses be borne by the tax paying public?? Heck, ZA doesnt even pay ZRA tax

  163. #202,Iwe ka Maggie, you are just jelous of people abroad/oveseas. You have missed a lot. Not all those abroad come here following your narrow minded ideas, I for one had a Visa which was granted to me same day with the whole family. All my kids were given a status in schools like the local students. I get paid equivalent to 1 Million ZMK just working x1 shift and I work hard for my family. Onyooooooooooo! kamonga niwewo. Russian students are let down by the Zambian govt and the rules of Russian gvt whereby they are not allowed to work. Tawaninapo ne ndeke we mbushi we—–. ITS NOT EASY TO GET TO WHERE IAM.YOU NEED AN HIV TEST TOO! INCLUDING THAT OF YOUR WHOLE FAMILY

  164. #175 and 192 i share your thought pattern.

#160 Factologist you need to know that businesses operate on trust. ZNA must have been trusted to pay not until they defaulted in perpetuity. Even if the story does not say that the company is making losses it is obvious when a company is failing to pay their debts that they are facing liquidity problems.

  165. hey guyz becareful with michael satana, what does he mean that more money in his pocket and his fellow kapoyans where does the money come from taiwan or where.stop lying to people and you should suit the campaign strategy HH is using is talking about real issues, sata you are old enough.

  166. RB PLEASE STOP USING PUBLIC FUNDS,GUYZ WHY LETTING RB USING THREE HELICOPTER SO SOON JUST KNOW DAT WHEN YOU VOTE RB OUR ECONOMY WILL BE FINISHED PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE PLUNDRES.

  167. I only hope no tax payers money will be used to bail them out. This is purely a business problem that requires a business solution. The Nchito brothers, and their all weather friend M’membe, should ponder on the next move.

  174. Based on my study, after a in foreclosure home is offered at an auction, it is common for any borrower to still have a remaining unpaid debt on the mortgage. There are many financial institutions who attempt to have all rates and liens paid off by the following buyer. Having said that, depending on a number of programs, regulations, and state laws and regulations there may be a number of loans that are not easily fixed through the transfer of financial loans. Therefore, the responsibility still falls on the consumer that has received his or her property in foreclosure. Thank you sharing your notions on this blog site.

  175. naturally like your web site but you have to test the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very bothersome to tell the reality nevertheless I’ll certainly come back again.
