World Bank salutes Zambia’s economic gains

Share

The World Bank has advised government to build on the positive economic gains that the country has recorded in the recent past so as to accelerate poverty reduction.

Out-going World Bank Country Manager Dr. Ohene Nyanin observed that the country has in the past four years registered economic growth which should now be translated to
poverty reduction.

He said the country should continue with its diversification programmes in other
sectors such as Agriculture and Tourism which can be vital in reducing poverty among
the rural people.

Dr. Nyanin told ZANIS in an interview that although the poverty levels have gone
down to 68 percent, the figures are still high.

Dr. Nyanin, who has been in the country for the past four and half years said the
country  has managed to attain marco-economic  stability which has resulted in  a
fall in inflation and interest rates despite the many challenges it faced.

He futher added that the prudent financial management the country embarked on
enabled Zambia  to get back on track on the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
Poverty Reduction Growth Facility (PRGF).

” Due to prudent financial management , we saw the country  reach the HIPC and
receive  debt relief  from both bilateral and multilateral cooperating partners,’ he
said.

He however stated that it was cardinal that the country continue to maintain macro-
economic stability and pursue reforms that will accelerate growth to above  7
percent.

Dr. Nyanin, who leaves the country in August, stated that economic growth should
translate to reduction in poverty levels are people.

  1. Go well Dr Nyanin, i think your contribution in restoring confidence and discipline in our economic management has been great. You leave Zambia is much better shape than you found it, partly due to your assistance.

  2. #2 Nkhataboy are you still sleeping? you did not post anything.Anyway Dr Nyanin I wish you all the best you worked well with DIPAK especially on the World Sugar quotas and the AGOA strategies, its only that we have failed to make full use of the AGOA facility due to reasons beyond our control, collapsed manufacturing industries. In deed, economic growth should
translate to reduction in poverty levels of the people. This is the most straight forward and direct measure of economic growth in addition to quality job creation. You supported us dearly God bless you in your new endervours

  3. Dr Nyanin your efforts have been appreciated. What a pity you are leaving just when our economy is poised for accelerated growth.I hope you are posted to another economy that will benefit from your experiences here.GRZ…..give this man a befitting send off, God knows he deserves one !!

  4. #4 give him a big portrait of Chuchu to take especially when he is intimidating cadres so that Nyanin remembers ati in Southern Africa there was one such big headmaster who never feared anyone including George Mpanga and Paul Wolf,I personally will miss this man because I had a priviledge of meeting and listening to his well researched speeches.Go Mudala will meet ku G8 nakabili inga twacita sort our corruption problem, may be by then Pundit, BaJoze , Nkhataboy,AM, Chapi ,Easy,Citizen,Msana wanzili, titus,Kayata, will have started a national airline, ala tulacula sana kuma order ku Dubai, please mukatulandileko kuli George Bush.Greetings to your staff

  5. Ba Kuku(5),ulubuli inshilefwaya !!! Please leave me out of the airline business…..i’m sourcing funds to build an underground railway from Nakonde to Shang’ombo!! I’m just awaiting the results of the EIA but i have already received $1.4million to complete the feasibility study!!!Unfortunately only companies registered in Chipata will be able to provide the “technical services” required for this ground breaking project!!!

  6. I hope it’s not Wolftliz’s case that is made this guy to go.You never know these old folks.Otherwise,I have alot of reservations on WB and IMF.These two institutions give terrible conditionalities and strings to proposed projects. What you might have set out to do is not what is done more often. What is done is what the bank wants. They act as if they know it all. Most of the time their projects have failed. Why? Because they do not want to localise things. If it worked in Cambodia then it can work in Zambia. That is nonsense. What they know better is to increase salaries for their girl friends on the expense of poor countries. These are the instituitons that have made us to be perpetual beggers. No wonder countries in South America are pulling out.Any way as they say at the grave yard that this man was hard working although he was not.I also say go well.it is even too late and u are going b4 approving my project proposal which I started submitting in 2004 and always to be told go back and refin

  7. Ba Nkhataboy(7), would you agree with me, that it has never been in the interest of the developed countries to see Africa on par with them !!The developed nations need cheap raw materials and well trained human resources and what a better source than Africa!! We are also guinea pigs for various economic theories that are developed at Harvard University. South America said enough is enough, and told the World Bank and IMF to take a hike!!(it was easier given the oil price boom of course!!)Are you aware that in the early nineties Botswana lent money to the IMF ???

  8. #8 Pundit, What is your point? Do not ask me whether I am aware about Botswana lending money to IMF or not. I am merely high-lighting the double standards of the WB and IMF.The ill treatment they offer to third world countries as their target groups. And to believe that you are a guinea pig at your age is sad.Let them continue experimenting on you alone. That is why I am saying it is long over due for Nyanin.Let him go and share what they stole with Wolfliz. It is not only oil that has seen prices sky rocketting but also copper. Why can’t we take a stance as well.Of course not pulling out because we have to finish paying back what we owe these institutions. But we have to ensure that we maximise profits from the sell of copper.

  9. Ba Nkhataboy(9),that was a rather harsh response!!Anyway, your thoughts on the ulterior motives of these “saviours”??? (please refer to the first line of 8)How do we maximise the profits from copper when the mines have private investors as majority shareholders??Our share of these “profits” is pitiful. Anyway, i’m sure you were referring to the yield from royalties that we should maximise, to boost our economy.

  10. #9 Nkhataboy, how do you expect the West to leave you alone when you have failed to govern yourselves?Plunder cases you need a muzungu,ARVs you buy contaminated ones, budget they must give you 30%, nomba mwaice wandi , kuti bakana ukukuteka imfine(pimples)?Nkhataboy Nyanini worked hard on the sugar allocation quotas otheriwise Mauritius yalefwaya ukutujuba so give credit where its due, as a person he is worth a pat on the back but as for the institution it needs alot of courage to pat them cos of what they did to us to allow KK to borrow $7.2bn plunging the whole economy into chaos, which today we cant even explain the use.The chaps he supported during the liberation struggle even laugh at us, have better infra structure, better schools , better hospitals when our sisters and brothers in shangombo swim everyday to get to school, barely eat full meals,we must reorganise our selves , make use of our resources and change this dependancy syndrome , develop home grown policies

  11. BaTony Blair since namucita retire there is a vacancy along independence avenue after 2011 please come back and continue from where Welesnky left in 1964 alatwafilwa ukuyiteka.Ne toloshi lyamaka twalifilwa ukubila insalu lelo cotton tulalima.Elo imikoti yonse twalipela ba mwisa baletulilafye amasuku pa mutwe.Mwebeko na bama Eliza ati shilya indalama basendele ku Bankroft bakatubikilepo interest not ukulalipila DLA PIPER pakwita ba Chiluba awe tatulefwaya nakalya.UNZA twalifilwa ukuleta icibote, nomba knashi finshi tukacita ifwe fwe ncushi?

  12. #12 KUKU- That is wishful thinking to call Tony Blair to become president of Zambia. Do not ask what other people can do for your country ASK what you should do your self to build where other have left. The economic indicators that we have are not enough to rely on but we need see to the fruits of ecnomic growth among the local populace such as job creation, education opportubities at tertially levels, and accesability to social ammenities then can we believe that our economy is booming. IMF and WB are helping but the help should lead Zambia to be on its own.

  13. #13 alo kabili show us the way since even you are a potential candidate, dont for others atleast mine was wishful thinking, nomba your is non existent so which is which? At least me I particpate as a councillor and my vision is to turn Ndola into the manufacturing city, bring back Furncoz,Crown Cork-Jordan Marsh, North stars,Vita foam, etc ingaiwe what are your plans?Waba amaka mu bantu, inga amaka yobe yalikwisa?

  14. #14 Since you are councillor then you must run for president rather than to have a colonial menatlity that you are showing. You see the fruits of labor. I dont blow my own trumpet.

  15. #16 I never had the colonial mentality but Chuchu has indoctrinated me into one.If you promise to vote for CA so that we can have a proper constitution then I will be game for plot1.Dont ignore the CA its very important,LPM is trapping himself in his own web, forget about the referendum ,just think , eat and ream CA for us to secure a happy future together.I want everyone in Nabwalya to atleast access a computer in their education it should not just be you to enjoy suffing in the US but also in Chilubula.
