FRA pays farmers K42bn

Share

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has paid K42 billion to farmers since the on-set of the maize marketing season this year.

FRA Public Relations Manager, Mwamba Siame, told ZANIS in a telephone interview that the agency has so far bought 97,542 metric tonnes, which is 95 percent of the
targeted maize produce in the province.

Mrs. Siame said the agency targets to acquire 103,030 metric tones of maize in the
province.

She disclosed that about 50 per cent of the maize purchases have been paid although
she could not disclose how much remained before FRA could reach its target.

She said the paying process was still on and the agency was still releasing funds
for payments to farmers in the province.

Mrs. Siame stated that paying of farmers was delayed because of the verification
process saying it is necessary that the process is not omitted in the disbursement
of tax payers’ money.

The maize marketing season is expected to end this month.
