Musicians jam for Chipolopolo

Share

A group of Zambian Musicians will stage a live musical show, Friday to celebrate the country’s qualification to the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

The artists say the concert is intended to sustain the celebration mood in the country, after the Chipolopolo boys’ victory against the Bafana Bafana.

Moses Sakala who spoke on behalf of his colleagues told ZNBC news, that the concert will be staged at Lusaka’s Smugglers Inn from 19:00 hours till dawn.

Sakala said Zambia’s renowned artists, Mozegeta, Danny, Amayenge, Uncle REX will join efforts with several other musicians during the show.

He also said there is need for all Zambians to help the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), mobilize support for the Chipolopolo Boys ahead of the Africa Cup to be held in GHANA.

Zambia, Sunday qualified to the 2008 Ghana Africa Cup of Nations after beating the highly rated Bafana Bafana 3-1 in Cape Town.

  1. This is interesting. We have qualified to the AFCON before and there has never been this hype and exciting and partying for the whole week as though we have won the world cup or something. The blogs have just been buzzing about the victory. I wonder what this is all about. Maybe it is seen as the turn around of soccer fortunes in Zambia, but just remember one sparrow does not make ….

  2. This is because our qualification to Ghana was doubtful considering that we were in a difficult situation as far points were concerning. A draw would have meant we are out. Now our boys put up a spirited fight to thrash BB. Mind you its not easy to win 3-1 away from home. Zambian people just need to celebrate this victory. Its something rare. Akuselebuleteni mwe bena Zambia.

  3. I guess victory or success means nothing if defeat is not a possibility. I guess the party should go on. Hopefully it rubs off the govt and quicken their resolve to build sports stadiums, its high time. Even from our own resources i.e national budget. Too much money just goes to these poverty alleviation stupidity and it just ends up buying 4×4 for people running these useless programes and it does not even help the masses. At least stadium construction will create jobs and more sports heroes and that is true poverty alleviation than these obscure stuff they do and all we see is expensive cars with Poverty Alleviation logos on them.

  4. Billy SA you are right, the route to this qualification was extremely doubtful, an away match against South Africa was not easy we actually did the unimaginable. We Should celebrate the victory it was well deserved and besides a win is a rare occurence for us.

  5. Lets celebrate the victory we should not be gloomy when we just avenged our defeat at Independence stadium,we beat the overated Bafana,we beat a team with all the resources in the world ( their Brazilian Coach gets US$ 285,000.00 Per Month)our PP gets only a small fraction of that. In short lets celebrate

  6. Hey this is just about business. The musicians know that they can ride on the soccer emotional rollercoaster and make some money from it so let them make the money. However this is not a rare win unless for young soccer fans. Mbafuchile’s Chipolopolo beat DRCongo away from home at a stadium they never lose in. Kalusha on Supersport on Friday reminded his fellow presenters that Zambia had beaten South Africa in South Africa before so there was nothing to stop Chipolopolo from repeating the feat on Sunday. Besides, we always qualify for these finals. We have missed the finals only twice in the past 30 years so we should have learnt to take these things within our stride. The danger is that the celebrations could create a mentality of there’s nothing more to look forward to and kill more ambitious expectations.

  7. Soccer Fan N0.2 Point of correction, Bafuchile’s Namibia beat Ethiopia 3-2 in Addis Ababa not DRC.DRC were held to a draw(1-1) by Libya at home that’s how the missed out on qualification.Yes DRC rarely loses at home.

  8. This Saturday 15/09/2007

It is true that behind all the talk of “jamming for the chipopopolo boys” these musicians are trying to make money. But that is still OK!!!!
You see, business/money will always be part of the things we do.
Do you think watching the game at the stadium was free of charge? certainly not!! What do you call that? Business and money making!!
Let me even shock you with this……..
Even ZNBC DID NOT air the game free of charge!!!!! Ever heard of the word “sponsors”?
Bane, there is nothing for free!!
    So leave the musicians alone.
    Lets celebrate our sweet victory.
    We deserve it.
    Chipolopolo iyeeeee!!!

  10. #9…. and there was something for the “sponsors” too. It is called “coverage” (adverts and stuff).
So you see? It’s money making all round.
    Viva capitalism!!!

  11. Uruguay hold Bafana to a goalless draw

    Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 – 19:47

A belated awakening in the final 15 minutes regained for Bafana Bafana a measure of pride and respect from the goalless draw against Uruguay in the friendly soccer international at Ellis Park on Wednesday evening.
Playing for much of the game with an ultra-defensive approach and seemingly suffering a hangover from the stunning 3-1 African Nations Cup defeat against Zambia in Cape Town on Sunday, the introduction of several late substitutes in the closing stages appeared to inject renewed life and enterprise into the Bafana ranks.

But even this splendid revival – and more dogged defending generally compared to that at Newlands Stadium – could not conceal the fact that for 75 minutes a befuddled Bafana had received another football lesson from a youthful, more composed Uruguayan side that was diluted by the absence of some of their most experienced and potent performers.

And in addition to the Bafana goal enjoying a charmed life on numerous occasions and goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez producing breathtaking saves from a 35-metre drive and close-range header from industrious Uruguayan midfielder Maximiliano Pereira, South Africa were, at times over-benevolently, even embarrassingly well treated by Zimbabwean referee Tendai Bwanya.

And even Bafana loyalists in the dismally small crowd of 7 500 looked on with some astonishment when Uruguay were not awarded what looked a clear-cut penalty midway through the opening half.

It was something of a disbelieving transformation in the closing stages after the crowd had come alive as a result of the late introduction into the Bafana ranks of former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi – with Uruguayan goalkeeper Juan Castillo making a number of agile saves in quick succession to keep Bafana at bay.

Closely marshalled and with little support for most of the game, Bafana kingpin Benni McCarthy had a relatively quiet game and only demonstrated rare touches of his scoring prowess.

Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira made four changes from the starting line-up that did duty in the Zambian debacle – and introduced four further changes during the course of a game that, at times, resembled nothing more inspiring than a practice outing.

But Parreira, not doubt, will claim a measure of satisfaction from drawing with a team ranked 21st in the world – albeit on home territory and without their opponents’ most celebrated stars.

    Line-ups:

South Africa: 1. Rowen Fernandez (16. Marlin 46 min), 2. Cyril Nzama (21. Mere 61 min), 4. Aaron Mokoena, 13. Benson Mhlongo, 20. Brett Evans, 10. Steven Pienaar (14. Nomvete 82 min), 9. Surprise Moriri (7. Nkosi 61 min), 19. Teko Modise, 6. Macbeth Sibaya, 11. Dillon Sheppard (8. Vilakazi 71 min), 17. Benedict McCarthy

Substitutes: 16. Calvin Marlin, 3. Bradley Carnell, 21. Vuyo Mere, 5. Nasief Morris, 18. Delron Buckley, 22. Bevan Fransman, 8. Benedict Vilakazi, 14. Siyabonga Nomvete, 7. Siyabonga Nkosi, 15. Thembinkosi Fanteni

Bookings, Yellow Cards: 19. Teko Modise 14 min, 2. Cyril Nzama 28 min, 6.

Uuruguay: 1. Juan Castillo, 3. Diego Godin, 2. Carlos Valdez, 4. Jorge Fucile 15. Roman 83 min), 11. Pablo Alvarez (22. Caceres 58 min), 7. Cristian Rodriguez, 5. Walter Gargano, 16. Maximiliano Pereira, 9. Luis Suarez, 13. Sebastian Abreu, 10. Carlos Grosmuller ( 8. Mozzo 46min)

Substitutes: 6. Mauricio Victorino, 8. Julio Mozzo, 22. Leandro Caceres, 15. Marcel Roman, 20. Richard Porta, 21. Christian Stuari, 12. Estaben Conde

Bookings, Yellow Cards: 9. Luis Suarez 21 min, 10. Carlos Grosmuller 30 min, 5. Walter Gargano, 16. Maximiliano Pereira 78 min

  12. Bafana not ready for World Cup – Parreira

    Posted on Thursday, September 13, 2007 – 10:36

Bafana Bafana – the national team of hosts South Africa – are ‘far from ready’ for the 2010 World Cup, according to their Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
The man who led his country to the 1994 World Cup title spoke to AFP on Wednesday after a hectic spell for Bafana Bafana (The Boys) in which they recovered from a 3-1 drubbing by Zambia to hold Uruguay goalless.

“It’s just the beginning. I have been here for eight months. You don’t have a (best) team in eight months. We need much more time. Maybe only by next February or March.

“It’s a building process going to the African Nations Cup in 2008, (and the 2009) Confederations Cup. Now it’s just the beginning of the work …”

He acknowledged problems with the team, who automatically qualify for the World Cup as hosts and squeezed into Nations Cup finals last weekend as one of the best runners-up having surrendered first place to Zambia.

“It is not easy to change a way of playing, the style, the culture … it’s against my religion to play the ball long, not building from behind, holding possession. I don’t think it’s (the) right way, especially for Africans.”

Among problems Parreira identified since taking charge last January was the goal-shy nature of local players and those in the national team.

“It’s a problem of world football. Brazil are also now struggling with finishing. They are missing Ronaldo, missing other players and coach Dunga is trying many players … they miss a player in the box who can really finish.

“Here in South Africa it’s a problem also … we need more players, replacements in case of injury or anything happening.”

He said his proposal to establish junior leagues and create a pool of fresh talent seems to have been ignored by football officials.

“It’s a pity because youth teams are not playing (in South Africa) to give us foundations, replacements.

“We will always have a problem, always struggle. People need to realise it’s not for me, it’s for the country. I leave after (the) World Cup, the country needs grassroots.

“The power of Brazil, Argentina, England, Italy is the youth level. They have the (youth) training in the clubs, they have the leagues. If we don’t make this … we always gonna struggle to have a sharp senior team,” Parreira added.

Parreira said he would love to win the World Cup for Africa and has presented a master plan to the SA Football Association (Safa).

“Yes, of course (I would like to win it for Africa). But we have to be realistic. Our first task is to jump to the next round and take it step by step.

“First, we have to build a team, find a way of positional play, have a philosophy of play, (and) try as many players as we can.

“In 2007 and 2008 mainly you have to check all the players in the country. In 2009 and 2010 we have to concentrate mainly on building the team.”

Parreira signed a four-year $252 000-a-month contract having led four national teams to the World Cup – Kuwait (1982), United Arab Emirates (1990), Brazil (1994 and 2006) and Saudi Arabia (1998) – during a 38-year career.

He is undaunted by the task of transforming Bafana Bafana, who failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and lie 61st in the world rankings, into a formidable side by the 2010 tournament.

Parreira, the 16th Bafana coach in 17 years, has already succeeded where many failed by convincing Benni McCarthy to end a 19-month exile triggered by a row over 2006 African Nations Cup bonuses.

And it took the 64-year-old Brazilian grandfather just six minutes to get the talented but temperamental Blackburn Rovers striker back into the fold.

“I arranged an appointment and he said ‘coach, yes I will come’,” said Parreira while refusing to reveal details of the discussion.

“It was a very nice conversation, we speak together three hours. But the key point (his return) was in five, six minutes. We didn’t need more than this,” he added proudly

  13. SIbs RSA, from what I get from SOccer fan 2 is that it was under Bamfuchile that Zambia beat DRC sometime bakc via an Andrew Sinkala goal in Kinshasa, where the DRC had never lost a match in years, just like our Chipolopolo at Independence until Angola did the damage. SO winning away by Chipolopolo is not an issue. Infact Bamfuchile had broken a record of qualifying Zambia to AFCON in 2000 without losing a match, at that time ZAmbia beat Kenya, DRC and other countries home and awat. Do you remember in 1999?

  14. Clive Hachilensa
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clive Hachilensa (born 17 September 1979) is a Zambian football defender.

He was part of the Zambian 2006 African Nations Cup team, who finished third in group C in the first round of competition, thus failing to secure qualification for the quarter-finals. Hachilensa is currently playing for IFK Mariehamn in the Finnish premier division, Veikkausliiga. He made his debut in “The Islanders” on the 4th of August 2007 against FC KooTeePee. He scored a goal on his debut to secure his team a 3 – 2 win, and has already become a popular player among the fans.

  15. We should be proud of our win. We have really shaken SA. I did not watch the game because of my location but when I read articles I can tell SA has been moved. Apparently only 7,500 fans watched the Uruguay game. Over here ,in Australia, about 70,000 fans came to watch their game against Argentina in Melbourne. Wow we have really shaken a nation.

  16. Is it true that some ‘big dog’ in FAZ has resigned? This must mean there is something wrong. Who is going to coach Zambia? Where are we going to play our qualifiers for 2010? Something fishy is going on. I hope there are no differences and we dont play in a foreign country. Someone on this blog rightfully said that Govt is wasting money buying 4 by 4 for poverty alleviation. These 4 by 4 are being plundered some of these leaders. Should Zambia play in foreign country and Govt fail to resolve the stadium issue they lose my vote for 2016. Stadia are simple issue. It is very embarrassing when BBC say Zambia has no stadia. Some leaders plundered the economy a few years ago in the MMD if Zambia fails to qualify to the world cup because of no stadium I will not vote for MMD.

  17. I AM PLANNING TO TRAVEL TO KAMPALA UGANDA. THERE IS A F***** CALLED MUGGAGA FROM UGANDA WHO KEEPS MAKING SILLY COMMENTS ABOUT THE ZAMBIA GAME ON ONE OF THE BLOGS. MUGAGGA ONCE I LOCATE YOU ARE IN TROUBLE!

  18. The musicians are right to capitalise on the euphoria the victory over BB has created.FAZ should take a leading role in capitalising on such an interest. For example,Zambians in the diaspora didn`t have a chance to watch this game.FAZ can put up a dvd for sale on the entire game or the highlights on the road to Ghana 2008.Make it possible for soccer fans to order such things on their website as a way of generating the much need funds. We can`t even get good quality replica jerseys and other apparel.ESPN beamed the U20 WC live on their website and FAZ can equally do the same when CHIPOLOPOLO is playing and can charge soccer fans to have such access.FAZ needs to be more creative in the way they run soccer in the nation.Otherwise,if the just open their eyes, they`ll realise that there`s alot of potential to make money through soccer.

  19. Yes Sibs SA in the same match Davies Phiri had stopped a penaulty kick or else DR CONGO would have levellled up.We won away by 1-0 courtesy of Andrew Sinkala

  20. the money that will be realised from this concert should be donated to faz to help the soccer body run its affairs smoothily. that is a way of saying regardless of dome of the weakness and limited resources they indeed do some work and they need to be encouraged.

  21. 21# I guess 19# will have a serious problem locating mugagga the rebel in Eastern Congo!
    That’s a classic!!

    22# Chapi,

Those are good ideas you posted there!
