15 killed in Chingola-Chililabombwe road crash

Share

At least 15 persons were tragically killed and 13 more left with multiple injuries after the bus in which they were travelling from the Zambian copper mining town of Chingola was involved in a head-on crash with a freight truck, the police said here Sunday.

Spokesperson for the Zambian police, Crispin Kapela, said the accident happened Saturday evening, but a full report on it was only made to police headquarters Sunday morning.

Altogether, there were 28 persons on the passenger bus, and the driver and his conductor were among the dead.

“What happened was that two trucks carrying goods were in a convoy from Kitwe (south of the accident spot) and heading towards the town of Chingola when the driver of the truck behind the other tried to overtake, and in the process came head-on upon the bus that was driving in the other lane,” Kapela said.

With little space in which to manoeuvre the bus driver was left stranded until the two vehicles crashed into each other.

Kapela said the injured were immediately ferried to various hospitals and clinics in the nearby copper mining town of Chingola, where they are now receiving treatment.

He blamed the truck driver for having ignored standard road safety regulations concerning overtaking on major roads, adding the bus was on its right lane when the truck crashed into it.

Mr Kapela said the driver, Abudi Rashidi, of the truck would be charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

  1. This is very sad indeed.Government should do something about those narrow roads. There are so many trucks on the roads due to the increased mining activity.Honestly travelling between Chililabobwe and Kitwe is a nightmare. Its a death trap.Build more roads for goodness sake!

  2. This is very touching issue. I want to appeal to the Govt and the so called investors btn Kitwe and Chililabombwe to start thinking of building a dua carriage way like the way it is btn Kitwe and Ndola.
We cannot keep on losing lives as simple as that. My condolences to the deceased families. MSRIP.

  3. This is yet another sad story. I have urged our head strong government and its leaders to do something about Kitwe-Chingola road before on this site. I was infuriated last time I heard government had appointed a commission of inquiry to determine what causes increased road traffic accidents on this road. I had said then that was the most childish and foolish thing to think of because the matter was self explanatory. This road curves repeatedly and with poor traffic signs, narrow roads in Zambia, frequent disabled cars packed on dangerous shoulders, poorly enforced traffic rules, increased traffic and bad drivers the carnage is going to be out of proportion. I had referred to the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriage way then.

  4. ctd. When I was growing up, there was an average of one or so traffic accident every two or so months on this road until a dual carriage way was built. With increased mining activity in North-western province, we do not want to lose more lives. Infarct, as we prepare to host All Africa games, I suggest that from Livingstone to Ndola, Kapiri Mposhi turn off to the Kitwe-Ndola road, and from Chingola to Solwezi, Chingola to Chilabombwe and Ktwe-Mufulira roads should all be upgraded. We should try to reduce the risk of traveling not only for our loved ones but for those visitors that are coming. Don’t our leaders learn lessons from other countries they visit daily? Please help stop this carnage, build highways throughout Zambia.

  5. Take note of the flyover bridge at UNZA. Until continued life lose was register then did it talk the GRZ to take action. Someelse the Transport Minister would have long been fired for his failures. I travelled to Chilambobwe to in 1992 and I know how eng the road there is and shape corners for me its not a surprise that such an accident happened because of leaders mostly sit in offices instead of being on the field. Very sad for the nation. Surprisingly the stampage of victims at Nkonkola stadia has not been made public. This goes for Gabon aircrash.

  6. CK (4),
What do you mean with this statement?

    “When I was growing up”

Do you think you have grown up now? I don’t see any sign of thinking abilities of a Grown up toddler. You may be grown up physically but certainly not yet mentally, emotionally and behavioral wise.

  7. FIFA has started to inspect South African stadia ahead of 2010 World Cup that RSA will host. This is years before the event! That is sanity and that is what our friends do. We just love to talk, talk and talk! Please let construction of new stadia, double lane roads, new hotels start NOW! Do we have planners in our government wings? Is there any coordination among ministries such as Tourism, Local Government, Transport and State House? You guys are full of rhetoric and no action. We are tired of this.

  8. ctd. I would love to see a dual carriage way from Sesheke and Kazungula to Livingstone and from Mongu to Lusaka, Lusaka to Chipata and from Kapiri to Nakonde. This is no too ambitious a project. There is just no vision in our leadership. Zambia is centrally located. Her position is ideal for reaping benefits from neighbouring countries that have to pass through Zambia to reach other countries. Has someone ever thought of how Zambia could maximize profits from her positional strength?

  9. Easy
This is where ka Fact must come out in open and deprecate the shit his party is doing. 70 pipo died in Kafironda coz of those chuchuchang Dr Chuchu has brought in MY country who knows nothing about safety measures (safute kuyisunga wemwine mwisho). MMD has been in power for almost 20 year and has done much damage to the country. At least UNIP built a lot of infrastructures that are now getting dilapidated in the hands of Dr Chuchu together with his chuchuchangs. Dr Chuchu is known to be killing pipo in masses. He killed 50 pupils in Mwense, 70 workers of Kafironda, 15 in this latest road accident, 9 Muf mines, 5 Kitwe mine, 7 Nchanga mines, 10 pipo were burnt to ashes in the road accident near Chisamba. Ala Dr Chuchu ampanda ifikali.

  10. Chapi,
My blog where standards, order and self moderation of blogs will take precedence is almost ready.

    Ba Joze,
I quote you from # 12 “deprecate the shit his party is doing” Do you expect kids patronizing this blog to see reason of returning here for anything? Do you expect them respecting you? Worse still do you expect the MMD to consider you a partner in progressive discourse? I beat no.

  11. VETERAN

Iwe ka Veteran leka amino ya tonshi aya kushita impersonate REAL KUKU. Who told you that USHE = BUSHE? Anyway, pronunciation of words depends on your shape of your mouth and dental formula. You can gang up with Pragmatist and ka Fact, I will be continue sending you in hidings till you reform to be good citizens of MY country. Come 2011, I will be the next presdo.

  12. Accidents, Accidents, Accidents. Thats what has being happening since Chuchu was elected in 2001, he is specialised in accidents causing. Since he come in power thousands of our pipo have died though accidents, starting with ABAFYASHI – MHSRIP (remember small minbus from masaiti). Now he has even got a doctorate in accidents causing. Chuchu finsi wapanda bushe?

  13. Has anybody noticed that each time Chuchu travel outside the country, there will horror in our land? Dr Chuchu ala, accidents victims’ blood are on your hands, starting from kawambwa, chambishi, CR buses and many more too numerous to mention here.

  14. #13 Kuku

That what it means when the Head of state sells his soul to the devil, nifyofine imipamba in MY country.

  15. A lot of factors contribute to accidents. Blaming GRZ for accidents is not the answer. I think road users should take much of the blame for not observing basic traffic rules. For instance South Africa has got an excellent road network and the same time has a highest traffic death toll in the world. Why should one over speed on a narrow road? Why should you overtake on a bend? Why drink and drive? Why not fasten your seat belt? Why drive a vehicle with a lot of defects?

  16. Its like Chuchu is now revenging in the zedian pipo for the accident he had when he was Veep of this country. The fact that Chuchu is never moved or acted upon in any these accidents show he doesnt care at all, because himself now whenever he is travelling he makes sure that, he stops anyone coming from opposite direction to move, no matter a short distance within state house. We Zedian pipo have cried for dual carriage way from Kitwe to Chililabombwe, but our cries fell on death & dummy ear of Dr Accidents Chuchu Muwelewele. KK was indeed a listern presdo, when pipo cried for a dua carriage way bt KT & ND its was granted in no time.

  17. Ba Chapi,

How come we are ranting in the opposite of actors on the ground? Many stakeholders have aligned themselves in solidarity with the MMD. Its very clear that we are the clueless fools perfecting in cyber rhetoric without an audience. We have become soul-mates of self delusion with our hopeless PF dogma. This unpopular boycott will be another UNIP guffle. If it ever worked for UNIP, it will work for us too. But as MMD is, we are destined to chew our foul mouth tongues with our tails between the legs in shame.

    Look:MISA Okeys NCC
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter will take part in the National Constitutional Conference (NCC).

This was decided at a consultative meeting members held – Monday.

MISA Zambia Chairperson, Father Frank Bwalya told ZNBC news, that the general membership decided not to boycot the conference.

Father Bwalya however said the members raised some concerns.

He also said MISA would prefer, the NCC act not to be subjected to debate when it goes back to parliament.

MISA follows, the Law Association of Zambia, UPND and other major stakeholders to come on board – NCC.

  18. Ba Joze,
Yes we over exhibited our foolishness but let hope our Presido saves his stupid face when he meets Mwanawasa. Otherwise, I see MMD rendering us useless should they progress with the constitution. These days I’m really pissed off to even gain strength for the blog. MMD is too stubborn. They have seen our stupidity of foul mouths without spine to impact events.

STATE NODS PF’S INTENTIONS TO SEEK LEVY’S AUDIENCE
    By Times Reporter
GOVERNMENT has said the Patriotic Front (PF) is welcome to seek President Mwanawasa’s audience on the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) provided the party means well and is not after derailing the process.
Government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, however, warned that should Dr Mwanawasa accept to meet the PF officials, they should not suppose he would bend or break the law.
Mr Mulongoti said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the PF or any other group of nationals was free to seek audience with the President but it was up to him to either reject or accept the proposal for the meeting.
He said although PF was part of the President’s summit and Parliament, which passed the NCC Act if they felt something new, had come up on the process, they were free to seek dialogue with the Government.
During a daylong meeting on Saturday, PF officials had resolved to boycott the NCC until all contentious issues were resolved. The meeting had tasked party spokesperson, Given Lubinda, to write to President Mwanawasa to seek an audience with him on the matter.

You are educating wrong people. This is a hub predominant of retards with multiple mental and psycho-social disabilities. What would you expect from the likes of Joze, Chapi, Makungu, Pundit, KC etc

  20. This very sad story, though confusing. The accident, according to the ‘head line’ was on Chingola-Chilabombwe road, but inside the story it states that the trucks were moving from Kitwe towards Chingola when the accident happened. Is there a Chingola-Chilabombwe road between Kitwe and Chingola?

  21. One difference between developed and underdeveloped nations, admittedly, besides the formers’ financial might, is the inertia and lack of promptness in remedying obvious ills by the latter. As I mentioned above planning and executing projects on time is important for leaders. Developed countries always expand roads and build alternative routes if traffic start to overwhelm any routes. As for Zambia, we are just asking to make dual carriage ways and that is not asking for too much! I did not deny that indiscipline or even drunkenness may play a role in our road carnage but I am convinced beyond reasonable doubt that many accidents could be prevented in Zambia by just building these roads if people’s outcry had been heeded.

  22. Zambia’s traffic is no closer to that of RSA. I believe if it were, it could even be a disaster going by the number of fatal road traffic accidents we have had, especially involving buses and trucks. If we loved our country so much, I believe, we could love to see even half of what other countries have. This too is not being over ambitious. Honestly, even when coming back from North Africa, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt or even South Africa not mentioning Europe or USA, if you do not experience nausea and pain for some of the ills that we could address, you must not love your country enough. Our leaders need to be accountable and need to see the urgency and need to remedy the pain that Zambia and Africa have carried for years.

  27. Where is GLUCO? He must tell how the Machine bought by the investors damaged the road and whether it arrived well. The media has not made any follow up from the time that Monster entered Zambia. The last comment was from MP Moonga about invisible damages. Has someone shut the media about reporting about these big huge investments.

  28. Easy, # 5, I traveled to Windhoek, Namibia on the Livingstone-Sesheke road in 1997. It was a sorrowful sight then! With me, were a number of professionals from outside Zambia. I really got embarrassed! By the time we reached Sesheke we all looked like we hard survived a major whirlwind! The same way someone who has gone through the pedicle road looks like. What added salt to injury was that across, Namibia was tarring their 500 km road amazingly ahead of us in anticipation of the bridge that was nowhere in sight then. Their side was great and I felt sad for residents of Sesheke. I compared this with how Congo DR on the pedicle’s side is and yet across in Zambia, the Copperbelt is organized. We have no excuse for underdevelopment. We need forceful leaders that are pragmatic on issues of development and protection of life. And roads are # one, everything else will then fall into place.

  29. Loss of live to road accidents has been come thing in Zambia. The road net work should be widen epecially in all inter city routes on the C/B due to economic activites that is going on. Developmet in infrastructure such as roads is key to sustainable development. Now you killing the pople with poor road. where are you taking HPIC funds Magande should answer this. Transport and road traffic patrols are nothing but full of corrupt officers.

This blog went to the Dogs the very time you brought your Dogish soul on it.
In short you are the Dogs that have killed this blog. It has no credibility, no value, no standard and no moderation.

Read through your rubbish. What do you think it reveals about you ???????

    # 12, 13, 16,

The blog has been systematically killed. But i have created an alternative discussion forum/Blog that will meet the standards of zambians keen to freely and intellectually engage in productive debates. I have come up with a non partisan blog. The lawless PF oriented blog has failed the test.No wonder the MMD are looking at all of us blogging here as hopeless fools without purpose in life.

  31. Firslty,My condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones through such a tragic accident.
I wish to agree with CK #3,4,21,22 & 29 and this gives me joy that there`s still hope for Zambia with enlightened people like you around. It only takes a few individuals like us with purpose, vision and determination to alter the destiny of our beloved nation. Is is too much to ask for our government to tackle the issue of improving our road network? If KK could manage to put up the NDOLA-KITWE dual carriage way to cut on the accidents that occured on the same route, then definately,it just calls for our gov to have the will to do the same on other major routes. In less than a month, the MMD gov will find money to waste on an unneccesary BYE ELECTION in CHINGOLA that will cost about a MILLION DOLLARS and yet they`ll tell us that there`s no money to even initiate a dual carrige way project. These people need to be serious in the way they run our nation.Failure to plan is planning to fail.

  32. #10,17,18,31,33,35&#36 SHUSHUSHU FACT/PRAGMATIST
This is NOT the way I`ve taught how to spin negative public opinion about the MMD GOV.It`s become so obvious that even the worst shallow mind can read your cheap impersonations. If you continue this trend,I am afraid you`ll increase the unemployment levels in the country when you get fired without any benefits.Pull up your socks and perform much better on this blog.

  33. Do we really have men who can turn Zambia into a better nation? When you analyse the current events unfolding in our country your hopes of a better Zambia are completely shuttered. Where are the men who have better aproaches to save Zambia? Look at the fuel shortages, accidents, poverty, university closures etc…The nation can actually qualify to be a disaster case and maybe we are not just aware of that fact. Where is the person in charge of ensuring enough fuel stocks and make sure that we dont have shortages?

  34. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
The wounds of the injured heal.

    Easy
I’m very much around. I’ve just been reflecting on the sufferings that have been inflicted on our brothers and sisters in Zim. Look at the women selling chocolate and biscuits in towns esp. intercity bus terminus.
Easy, the monster that was brought by an investor through our roads arrived safely in CB. To avoid damage to road, it should have used railway.

  35. #53 GLUCO, Thank you for the info. Now its time of action SADC you press the EU over ZIM. If sanctions are not lifted against ZIM no EU/AU meeting in Portugal. Sanctions must be lifted before the negiotations are made over EPAs. The whole Africa should stand up and demand for this fairness. Gluco I was listening to WHYS on the SA/ZIM border yesterday. Its terrible what the santions are doing to that country once breadbasket. Did you know that in ZIM you dont need to dig pits to extract minerals. This is where the land issue becomes more important. What ZIM should do is to arrest the puppets and put them behind bars. Gluco our sisters and brothers they are undergoing what we went thru from 1986 to 2001. Africans must be careful awareness is the key to problems are learning from previcious mistakes.

  36. People fighting govt over NCC will be arrested -Levy

    President Mwanawasa
All those fighting government over the National Constitution Conference (NCC) will be arrested and charged with treason, President Mwanawasa warned yesterday.

Addressing scores of MMD cadres and government officials at Lusaka International Airport soon after his arrival from London, President Mwanawasa warned that anyone daring government over the NCC was committing treason and risked being charged with treason.

“NCC is now law. This law is now embodied, for those who did not know, in the NCC Act. I want those who are daring government to know… those who are still doubting

that this is not the law and those who want to fight government and make governance impossible, that they are committing treason,” President Mwanawasa warned.

“I have come back a changed person. Let me hear no more nonsense bordering on malice, they are going to be arrested and charged with treason and bail is not available to treason.”

President Mwanawasa wondered why some people were still against the NCC even after the government amended the NCC bill in order to allow the conference to elect its own chairperson. He said he was delighted to see that the constitution review and NCC had been progressing very well.

He observed that most of the organisations and individuals who had previously not supported the constitution-making process, had embraced it.
“I wish still to appeal to those that are still doubting to follow suit and accept this NCC,” he said.

President Mwanawasa further wondered why the civil society complained that civil servants and public officers were dominating the NCC and that under such circumstances the government would have the privilege, when it was public knowledge that the MMD had been complaining that the electoral officers had never assisted them during elections.
He said even though MMD was the party in government, it did not mean that they controlled the civil servants.

“The opposition themselves know how we have complained, for example, during elections that we have not been supported by electoral officers.

Even in elections, at State House for example, when the counting had been done, it is found that MMD has been losing. If that is the case, what evidence is there that we are manipulating these people? These people are Zambians; there could be soldiers, police officers or teachers. We cannot exclude them because they are very important,” he said.

President Mwanawasa said the MMD government had bent forward and backwards to accommodate everything the civil society had said and complied with their demands.
“But what is the problem? You said that the President has too much power because he appoints the chairperson of NCC.

I gave in and instructed the justice minister to amend it so that the NCC itself will elect its chairman,” he said. “Despite that they changed their goal post saying the President has too much powers because he can dissolve the NCC at any time. Yes that power is there. But I invite them to look at the Act to see whether it is a power which the President in a democratic state should not have.”

President Mwanawasa said the government was not ready to spend on a process which could not produce results.

“If they are abandoning their mandate and begin clutching each other’s neck, fighting and insulting each other at the expense of the state, we are paying them allowances for doing nothing but creating chaos, as a responsible President, I have the power to dissolve them,” President Mwanawasa warned.

“When I have dissolved them, it does not mean it is the end of it because we can start the process all over again and elect other members of the NCC who are prepared to work. Do they want me to appoint Sata to be in charge of this process? Sata is not the President…let him give me time to rule.”

President Mwanawasa explained that as soon as the NCC completed its work and adopted the new Constitution, the justice minister was empowered under the NCC Act to take the bill back to Parliament to revoke and repeal the NCC.

“And it will no longer be law. What is wrong with that?” he asked.
He reminded Zambians that some countries have been on the constitution conference for as much as six years without results being shown.

“I wanted it to be different in this country at this stage. That is the reason why I was elected President of this country. I was given executive functions. And I intend to govern this country and to invoke the executive functions to the full,” President Mwanawasa said.

He expressed happiness at the warm welcome Zambians had given him. President Mwanawasa said the good welcome could only mean that Zambians loved him.
He explained that his trip to the US was extremely successful as he addressed the UN general assembly on climate change and various other issues of national development and held bilateral meetings with the international community.

“I addressed, for example, the tendency by some countries to keep on hiding property which has been stolen from the developing countries. I appealed to those countries to ensure that not only do they repatriate those funds that have been stolen from us but they should also hand to us the fugitives or culprits instead of entertaining them with red carpets in their countries,” he said.

President Mwanawasa disclosed that Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates had confirmed to him that Zimbabwe would be invited to the forthcoming European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) summit scheduled for December in Lisbon.

“Zimbabwe should not make us fail to sit down. So he confirmed to me that Zimbabwe would be invited. I was extremely pleased to hear this. If Zimbabwe is invited then I am going to Lisbon, so will my colleagues in the AU, SADC; we are going to attend that dialogue,” he said.

“I still appeal to the Prime Minister of Britain to consider his stance because we consider him to be too important, particularly for us in the SADC, because most of us, Britain was our colonising empire and so he is a relevant partner to discuss matters of the development of Africa with us. I repeat; we will consider it a great and exciting moment if the Prime Minister of Britain attends the summit. If he doesn’t attend it will be indeed unfortunate.”

President Mwanawasa said during his bilateral meetings, he explained Zambia’s position and that of SADC nations on Zimbabwe.

“I mentioned that it is not the answer to isolate Zimbabwe. We should engage Zimbabwe in dialogue. The Commonwealth suspended Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe decided to quit the Commonwealth. You cannot say the Commonwealth has gained because it is the Commonwealth which has lost.”

On the honourary doctorate in law bestowed on him by Harding University of the US, President Mwanawasa said he was humbled and it was in recognition of the achievements of Zambians.

“I told them that what we have achieved as a country was not achieved alone, but by collective efforts of Zambians. So we should be proud of the fact that the international community is recognising our efforts,” he said.

“I will soon be retiring from public life and there is no need for me to look for employment. I am sufficiently qualified. I passed with merit in law at UNZA. I was admitted as solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and I have been conferred with the honour and dignity of State Counsel.

So professional-wise, what more do I need? Some people are saying they are not recognising this doctorate and I don’t invite them to recognise it. Indeed, I went as Mr Mwanawasa and I have come back as Dr Mwanawasa.”

President Mwanawasa urged youths to use his dedication of the doctorate to them to aspire to become professors.

And speaking on behalf of the youths, David Kaunda National Technical High School pupil Gideon Muzamba said the youth would cherish the honour given to them by working very hard so as to uphold the moral fibre of justice in the country

“To accept the doctorate degree which you have dedicated to us the youths of Zambia, we assure you that we will rise to your level of doctorate and beyond to be called professors,” Muzamba said.
Earlier, MMD cadres sang songs of praise and performed traditional dances.
First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, local government minister Sylvia Masebo and Gender and Development minister Patricia Mulasikwanda joined in dancing to the traditional drums.

  39. My Presido Ba sata all he has achieved in life is maintain his Cuban Cigar and replicating children everywhere there is a dumcell.

  40. A lot has been said about the kitwe chingola road and yet nothing is being done by the Dr’s government. we have heard that a dual carriage way project has been approved and will be executed next year but what should we do now.

If we sit and watch like birds in the air, more lives will be lost along these roads. Perharps the Dr’s goverment should take measures like restricting the movement of trucks up to a certain time e.g trucks to move from morning to 18;30hrs. This strategy has worked in Bostwana and it can equally work here.

The other option would be to stop drivers from overtaking if a public motor vehicle is approaching because most of this accidents are head on and affecting public motor vehicles. It could be difficulty at night but may be a light or a special reflector can be introduced to be used by public motor vehicles at night.
The problems is that zambians are not known to speak with one voice over an issue, our lovely one are dying every week lets speak out.

  41. It’s government’s responsibility to build roads and not that of investors. Government should find ways of raising money (e.g. toll gates) to improve the road infrastructure, otherwise the carnage on the roads will continue. My condolences to the families of the deceased.

  42. GP Its so sad that people should be dying in such frequency and in so many numbers. Our leaders should remember that these are peole with faces, names, families , loved ones and responibilities – they are not just STATISTICS. How long and how many lives will it take before our govt acts?My condolences to the families. MTSRIP
