Indeni oil refinery resumes production

Share

Indeni Oil Refinery has resumed production, managing director Gerald Gueglio said on Monday, after a prolonged shutdown which sparked fuel shortages as suppliers gave copper mines priority.

Last week Zambia started rationing fuel following a shortage caused by the closure of the sole oil refinery.

Indeni was shut on Sept. 1 but re-started preliminary production on Sunday with normal operations due to be resumed on Monday, officials said, following the pumping of crude oil from Dar-Es-Salaam by another state-owned firm, Tazama Pipeline.

“We have started pumping crude oil and even the refinery has started (preliminary) production. We pump an average of 2,000 tonnes of crude oil to Indeni per day,” Tazama’s managing director Largeman Muzelenga told Reuters. Tazama is set to supply Indeni with 60,000 tonnes of crude.

Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Buleti Nsemukila said last week that Tazama could not begin to pump the 60,000 tonnes crude oil imports following a misunderstanding with a banker over a $42 million letter of credit, but the issue had been resolved.

A senior ministry of energy official said on Monday that Zambia was still importing refined fuel from South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania to cushion the shortages following the closure of Indeni.

“The imports of fuel will continue until Indeni stabilizes its operations,” the official said.

Nsemukila said last week that the fuel shortage had not affected the copper and cobalt mines, Zambia’s main economic lifeblood, because oil marketing firms were giving mines preference for fuel deliveries.

Last week, a few service stations in the capital Lusaka were offering only 10 litres of fuel worth about $18 per vehicle while others completely ran out of petrol as motorists parked their cars and opted to go to work by public transport.

Nsemukila said the shortage had partly been caused by deliveries of fuel to the copper mines.

  4. Man i don’t know about Indeni, something does not add up at that place. Simple math, riddle me this, if you know u are going to have a shortage of water, which happens frequently, don’t we go out and save water in drums, containers, buckets and some times even the bathtub.
Why then can they not use the same technique with oil, save up for a raining day instead of having the shortage bs nonsense we are having

  5. Yes this is really ridiculous and if it happens to you, it’s not really funny. I remember on Sept 29th I was on E drove the whole kabwe road and cairo rd and there was no fuel, had to drive to Manda Hill and attendants were hoarding fuel forcing some people to bribe the attendants just to get the little gas that was there. And this was 5:30 am. Just why do authorities allow such things to happen. Just which *****s runs that Indeni thing and ..dont they know how vital that firm is to zambia?

  6. #5 & #6.Unfortunately,we are governed by incompetent individuals who don`t seem to realise that FAILURE to PLAN is PLANNINIG to FAIL.

  8. Indeni would be more viable and sustain the production 365 when our govt make energy as a priority. They keep making artificail shortages to create fake gas prices.Energy is vital to keep economy moving and transportaion of people, goods and services. Wake up LPM and serve Zambia from Zimbabwe type of lifestyle.

  10. Patriotic Front’s Dialogue Baffling
The way the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has gone about its purported dialogue with the Government on the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) is baffling in several respects. In the first place, the Patriotic Front was party to the meeting of Presidents convened under the auspices of the Zambia Centre for Inter-party Dialogue (ZCID). The party benefited from the logistics given to parties, and contributed to the outcome that fed into the Constitution-

  12. LAME DUCKS LAY A GOLDEN EGG.
With the on and off runing of the indeni due to eratic supply of crude oil, my own anticipation is that Indeni oil refinery operating costs are way above its margianal profits. Oil refineries, from a chemical engineering point of view, need to be running continiously for some time to keep the costly units like the catalyst active. I can not be suprised to learn that it is actually cheaper to import refined oil than processing crude oil at indeni. Pliz plan in advance

  13. Men who use laptop computers could be unwittingly damaging their fertility, experts believe.
Balancing it on the lap increases the temperature of the scrotum which is known to have a negative effect on sperm production, researchers found.
Coupled with the rising popularity of these computers – about 150m people use them worldwide – much more research is needed say the US authors.
The State University of New York findings appear in Human Reproduction.

    By ANGELA CHISHIMBA

SEVERAL Zambian missions abroad and some Government departments have already exhausted their 2007 budget allocations, about six months to the next allocation in the 2008 national budget.

According to the Ministry of Finance and National Planning disbursement schedule, foreign missions topped the list of “big spenders.”

The Zambian embassy in Washington has over-shot its budget by K2.9 billion from an allocation of K4.7 billion.

70% of Zedians are subjected to a meal per day and it’s not that they want but the prize of mealie meal is beyond their reach. The ci MMD govt instead of reducing the prize it opt to donate the maize to Swaziland at the expense of poor Zedians. Which country in the region assisted us with food during droughts periods? Not even those pipo we assisted in their struggle for their liberations do come for our assistance. It’s really sad to see Dr Chuchu with 2001 burnt brain cells to give DIRECT

It’s really sad to see Dr Chuchu with 2001 burnt brain cells to give DIRECTIVES to agricultural minister to donate maize to Swaziland. Anyway, pipo of Fact’s calibre used to say and are still used to say “everywhere Kaunda eeee, Kaunda eee!” Now it’s everywhere Dr Chuchu wee, chu-chu-chu” It seems like Dr Chuchu is now in the mayhem state and dwelling in satanic specialty.

  21. Nanga Dr Chuchu alwisha chani, by donating our precious staple food to the king whose way of life is to just marry and produce children year in and year out and does not bother to Lima for his many wives and children. Dr Chuchu pleeziii, have mercy on yr own Zedian children are dying every hour becoz of poverty. Give them food be4 you take out that log from your neighbour.

  22. Ba Joze I wonder what kind of intellectualism you are exibiting on this blog. You sound like a person who is suffering from some frustration of some kind. Here is me advice for you. If you want to advice or critise somebody do not use insults because by so doing you shift their attention from your salient points of you criticism and they will focus on the insults. You dont need a degree in psychology to have this analysis it is just common sense. I hope you will see sense in this. Good day Bro.

  23. Anonymous(26),
Frustration has nothing to do with that subnormal behavior. Joze is a retard unfit for any public domain discussion period. I’m surprised you even expect some decency from him. Look at how he went insulting FACT’s parents after he was told off that Chimumbwa’s move is no different to Sata’s fraud MPs.Little does he know that insults on any parents cover his own too. Thank God’s FACT has ignored him as being a mentally deliquent retard with too many personal short-comings.

  24. Am surprised that you chaps, up to now you don’t know MMD cadres’ cheap tactics. They insulted me and I didn’t retaliate and all they did was to get frustrated and start insulting themselves so that it may look like am the one. Plz check my previous postings see whether that language is associated with me. Anyway, it doesn’t take time for you chaps to know how MMD cadres operate.

  25. Ba Joze,
We have access to this serve to the core and operate on real time with all the traffic here. Please don’t fool yourself out of ignorance. All these insults have been coming from your IP period. No one posts from that location where you are. Our silence is not a sign of stupidity but pleasure for logic and progressive debates.FYI, all internet pages are scaned regularly and LT is no exception. Be constructive and thoughtful than insulting here you risk blaming your ignorance.

  26. Any way it depends on which college you went to. What I know is that ba Joze went to a mick mouse college which explains his lack of moral reasoning.

  27. AMERICA IS GOING ROUND THE WORLD FRUSTRATING COUNTRIES THAT GET OIL FROM IRAN, HENCE INDENI SAGA. NO WONDER WHEN IT GOT BURNT THE FIRST TIME, INTELLIGENCE REPORT LED TO U.S.A. BEING INVOLVED.

  28. In your perfect little worlds..does nothing ever go wrong???…the impact felt by the country when indeni shuts is because it is the sole facility in the country..perhaps our argument should be with the government on why they have not built a sister plant in some other part of the country..say eastern province seeing as the pipeline runs through there!!!..also at the end of the day..if you dont pay for the crude oil..nothing comes out the other end!!!

  29. Ba Joze,
Have you realized that your subnormal behavior of insults has left apathy on the blog? You have reduced the standard of the blog to the gutter class level you have proved to belong.A lot of bloggers here are parents, professionals, and Graduate school candidates. They have found your shallow caliber not befitting their standards hence the apathy. My blog is getting ready next week time allowing. I moderate against your behavior.

  30. indeni is really been run shambolic by these so called zambian people who are just making themselves rich by stripping off the poor employees of their conditions of service. indeni management has removed canteen meals and employees buy their food and now you cant even get commutation. what kind of people are these who are running this strategic company/? believe me years from now that company will just be a skeletone..
