2007 Barclays Cup Semifinal Preview

Share

2007 Faz Premier League champions Zesco United are 90 minutes away from reaching their third cup final this year
when they face Green Buffaloes in a Barclays Cup
semifinal doubleheader at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola.

The other semifinal clash at Nchanga will be between promoted Chambishi FC and Konkola Blades who meet in the opening game at 12:30.

Zesco have already won the season opening Samuel “Zoom” Ndholvu Memorial Charity Shield and the Coca Cola Cup on top of the league title they secured last month.

This will be the second time Zesco and Buffaloes will be meeting in a cup tournament this season.
Zesco and Buffaloes faced-off in the semifinals of the “Zoom” Charity Shield that the former won 2-1 last February on the Ndola teams long road this season to picking up their first honor of 2007.

Zesco have gone on to enjoy a competitive edge over Buffaloes this season with a 3-0 away win and 1-1 home draw in Week 1 and 16 league games respectively this season.

Zambia midfielder and this seasons current joint top scorer Rainford Kalaba on 21 goals has scored four goals against Buffaloes-two of them in the 3-0 demolition at Independence Stadium in that delayed Week 1 match played on March 25.

Together with his co-top scorer and Zesco striker Enoch Sakala they are expected to help inspire against Buffaloes as they aim for an unprecedented fourth debut cup honor in one season by a top-flight club.

Buffaloes meanwhile will be hoping their prolific form in the Barclay’s Cup in which they have averaged two goals a game will continue in contrast to their current form in the league.
Zambia Under-23 striker Reuben Tembo, Ezekiel Tembo including influential midfielders Noel Mwandila and Sebastien Mwansa are all available as George Lwandamina’s team searches for its first competitive win over Zesco this season.

And Aggrey Chiyangi will be looking to cap a very eventful season after guiding Chambishi back to the top-flight on the first attempt following their relegation last term when his team takes on Blades in the other semifinal tie.

Blades will be wary of Chambishi who have already claimed the scalp of two big league teams in as many cup competitions they have played in this season including the Barclays Cup where they beat troubled 2006 league champions Zanaco 2-1 in the preliminary round.

Chambishi on Independence Day, October 24 beat a resurgent Power Dynamos 2-0 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Mosi Cup.

That victory over Fodson Kabole’s Power is a clear sign that Chambishi mean business with promotion secured and out of the way as they dream of a fruitful visit to the bank after the final on November 23 at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
