Boy, 10 ‘hangs’ himself

Share

A 10- year- old boy of Zambia Compound in Kafue district has committed suicide by hanging himself using a piece of wrapper (chitenge cloth) on a football ground goal post.

Both the father of the boy, Jack Mwanza and the Police confirmed the incident to ZANIS today which happened at Mtendere Basic School football grounds yesterday around 15:00 hours.

Police named the deceased boy as Haiwelo Mwanza of house number K 60 in Zambia Compound and a grade three pupil of Kaseba Basic School.

Mr. Mwanza told ZANIS at the funeral house that he was shocked about the death of his son saying there was no way the boy could commit suicide at such at tender age.

He said upon leaving home for work after lunch he left the boy eating nshima and advised him not to move out.

Mr. Mwanza disclosed that he was only informed later about the death of his son by his daughter Phales Mwanza whilst at work.

Narrating the ordeal, he said the girl who was at the scene informed him that the incident happened when the deceased was playing football at the school ground.

He said the boy according to his sister pretended to be hanging himself with a wrapper (chitenge cloth) and accidentally got killed in the process. He said it was at this point the girl rushed home to call for help but later on found him hanging dead about two metres away from the ground.

The body is still lying in Kafue District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Police who referred further queries to Lusaka Division Police Commanding officer Greenwell Nguni have since launched investigations into the matter to establish the cause of the boy’s death.

Meanwhile, a Kafue magistrate court this morning adjourned a rape case involving a male nurse Richard Tembo of Kafue District hospital who allegedly raped a female cancer patient last year in December.

The Court adjourned the matter to 16th January 2008 for trial because the accused asked to be excused as he was unwell.

Magistrate Monica Chiyaika adjourned the case after the accused produced a medical report showing that he was not feeling well and could not proceed with the court proceeding.

The bond has since been extended.

  1. #1,the stuff kids see on TV today contributes to some of these freak “accidents”!! Also as adults, we have to be careful what we discuss in front of our children!! It is becoming common for adults in a home to discuss marital/sexual problems of the neighbours in front of the young ones……no wonder we seem to have “jacked up” youngsters in our communities.

  2. Any fool knows how to tie a knot, but more children are depressed these days, that could lead to suicide. When a child is invovled people refuse to accept the consequence. Most parents are very cruel to their children, as a result kids start wishing they were never born or otherwise. Imagine a life where parents beat and shout at their kids at every little “mistake” just cuz they are stressed with their own lives, and call that dicpline! Think about that childs soul how it feels at every lash???

  3. #3, you are so right. This reminds of the incident in Chingola a couple of years ago, in which a kid died in similar circumstances. The boy and his friends were trying to play a part they had seen in a Nigerian movie that involved hunging, as a method of removing demons. Kids will try out anything they see. That’s why parental guidance for certain movies is seen as essential in the West.

  4. the world we are living in is surely different. My 4year old nephew already knows how to ‘google’! Do you try to slow down the speed at which kids are acquiring knowledge these days or is it a 21st century thing.

  5. #2 the world is slowly coming to an end. Sad! My daughter will never watch a horror film not what her rights are because I know how distructives can this be. If anything there good films like Tele Tubbies, kids website from Scandivian countries. I will ´take the trouble to protect her from all atrocities that can destroy her. Otherwise she will never go anywhere alone until may she is 14 15 years. Parenting doesnt end on food provision but guidance which is a must.

  6. I’m not realy buying this story, this boy can not do such a thing.Somebody must have killed this boy and latter make it like sucide.Do we even have Crime Scene Investegators in Zambia?

This story is very very strange, I for one dont believe this.

  7. Strange Story indeed.

Its a strange story but sometimes strange things happens. If I read the story correctly, the young boy’s sister was there watching – she witnessed the whole thing. Boys do strange things at times only that this one was too dangerous.

  8. #13,its not what you want for daughter but what she wants in this life.If I was allowed to make choices for my life I would have ended up being a good soccer palyer but my uncle would not a thing to do with that.I probably would have made alot of money from that career than being an engineer.
Inonge, you can easily regulate what children surf on the web. My son is 5 and he teaches me new ways of surfing the web.Thats is how fast the world has gotten to.Let them enjoy it like we used to Kabisabisa

  9. #17 Mutúnza, My kid has all options but I guide her in many things because I have to lead by examples. Iam a flick so I also learn alot from my kid but this doesnt mean I have to let her get self destruction. She has a choice.

  10. #18It looks like you have the ABC laid down for her.We must give them the basic and that should be fine when they grow older coz they will know the right from the wrong. Policing them I dont advocate.Honestly, how do you guide someone who has options, if you are not dictating what you want for them.Bit contradictory there Easy.

  11. #20,I dont think this story calls for any humour at all, this is very sad indeed. Do you know what it feels like to lose a child?

  12. If I read the story correctly, the sister who was at the scene said the boy was pretending to be hanging himself and died in the process; so this looks more like a freak accident than suicide or demons that most people on this site seem to be alluding to. Sad, very sad occurance.

  13. Yes, is possible for a 10 year old to commit suicide. A number of children in Zambia have done it in a playful manner as seen on TV or books, children copy things.

Also, some children have taken toxic liquids by mistake and have died

  14. I JUST WONDER HOW OLD THE SISTER IS IF SHE CAN LET HER BROTHER PLAY WITH SUCH A DANGEROUS GAME.IF I WAS THE POLICE OFFICER I WOULD FIND OUT WHERE THE BODY WAS HANGING, BECAUSE IF IT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAOLPOST THEN SOMEBODY HELPED THE CHILD TO CLIMB AND TIE THE KNOTE. BUT IF IT WAS CLOSER TO THE POLE THEN HE CAN DO IT HIMSELF.BUT I AM CONFUSED BECAUSE I HAVE A TEN YEAR OLD CHILD SO I WONDER HOW HE CAN JUMP 2METERS FROM FROM THE GROUND AND HOOK HIMSELF IN THE NOTE

  15. at 10 all i thought of was playing in the rain…mud… dirt!!!! now im 28 and not 1 day have i ever thought of taking my life… love it too much. any problem can be solved…. and not by death.

  16. Below in the same article there is a report of court case concerning a male nurse in Kafue Richard Tembo who raped a female cancer patient supposedly at Kafue District Hospital. He is a beast and must be hanged by the balls.
