Speaker Directs Mulongoti to explain why ZNBC failed to beam AFCON

Share

Speaker of the national Assembly Amusa Mwanamwambwa has directed Information Minister Mike Mulongoti to deliver a ministerial statement tomorrow on the failure by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) to air live the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Speaker said the general public expects a great deal from the national broadcaster because of the K3,000 licence fees it was collecting from the people.

He said the country being a footballing nation would like to watch and see what was happening in Ghana.

The speaker was making a ruling following a point of order by Mfuwe Member of Parliament M Malama who wanted to know why Mr. Mulongoti, as minister of Information and Broadcasting has not made an official statement on the matter.

However, the Zambia National broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) board chairperson Augustine Seyuba said it will be irresponsible on its part to ask government for money to enable it air the 2008 Ghana MTN Africa cup of nations due to the on going flood situation in the country.

ZANIS sports reports that Seyuba said in a statement today that the corporation recognizes the challenge government has at the moment due to floods that have affected many people in the country, who have been left homeless.

Seyuba explained that ZNBC could not bring any more partners on board to raise the required K5 billion in three days.

He said the corporation has been planning to beam the tournament live.

He said the national broadcaster recognizes that most Zambians have a great passion for football adding that it is regrettable that the corporation will not broadcast the event.

The board Chairman said neighboring Malawi and Zimbabwe and Nigeria in West Africa are among countries that will not televise the matches saying this was an indicator on how unreasonable the vendor has been in their pricing for the tournament.

  1. Well, I thought ZNBC had explained their position. Does parliament have pressing concerns by citizens to be ironed out? No wonder our law makers debates are always trivial things like asking ministers, “what was done on so and so.” “How people will be affected by this and that!” Welcome to Zed parliament!

  2. Because other countries aint showing CAN08 live is no excuse for ZNBC to fail. How do you honestly pass that as an explanation Mr Bored Chairman. Its time you left the corporation if you wont meet the pipo’s expectations, sir. This strikes me as a dumb excuse of the century. Thats why the man wees on his bed every nite. Trust me, I now know why.

  3. Ba board chairman, those are lame excuses naimwe Malawi, Zimbabwe and Nigeria is NOT Zambia, why didnt you also give exa, ples of countries who are showing it? the whole southern africa i suppose except the 3 countries…….you just failed to plan in advance….and Mulongoti will just repeat wat salasin said, i wonder why the speaker is even askn for his explanantion.

  4. Looks like someone has seen an opportunity to make political capital. Just fire the guys at ZNBC for concealing their financial difficulties until late. Floods should not be used as an execuse.

  5. Zambia cuts Zimbabwe power supply
Zambia has said it will no longer share power with Zimbabwe, as electricity problems spread across southern Africa.

Zambia made the move to safeguard its supply after suffering severe power disruptions over the past few days.

It comes after South Africa reduced its energy exports to its neighbours, including Zambia.

  6. This said, the conspiracy of the evil ones to sabotage ZESCO systems through their agents has been to choke Zimbabwe.Lets audit our systems and screen attached personnel to all National strategic assets. We did it in UNIP and we ought to embed activated patriots at all levels in national interest lest we die as a nation.

  7. BY NOT SHOWING AFRICA CUP ON ZBNC IS ONLY PROMTOING OUR ZAMBIAN MEN, WOMEN INCLUDING INTO GOING TO BARS TO GO AND WATCH THESE MATCHES. THUS PROMOTING FAMILIES NOT TO BE TOGETHER. WHAT A PITY.

  8. Ba speaker, i think you are just wasting your time to summon mulongoti. To me it won’t help in anyway.they should just stop stealing ama k3.000.00 from people because they are a few zambians who have interest watching ZNBC nowaydays. imwe ba charman naimwe why din’t plan two month’s b4 AFCON 2008.BUT you are now telling us stories.Nima cheap explanation you will expect Bwana speaker.

  9. it’s high time the government did something on the high tarrifs it is charging private investors in the broadcasting sector. ZNBC is boring anyway. Politically it serves the ruling party.

  10. This is not first time ZNBC failed to broadcast the Africa Cup of nations. I am aware that this was known a long time ago but ZNBC waited to the very last minutes. It is not good on people of Zambia who are the lovers of soccer. N`way like someone said ZNBC is boring there is need to have the management changed for better. It is sad really for for the people who have grown up knowing ZNBC as the only station that can broadcast the matches. It time for change.

  11. Its a pity for Mr. Speaker to be wasting time on such trivial issues when he knows the answer these myopic Ministers are going to give. Its just time to change management in most of these strategic institutions and put people with foresight. We r tired of the same people like Seyuba being the only ones heading most of the companies in the country. don’t we have other people pls.

  12. And Seyuba who doesn’t know what his background is like? So what do you expect him to bring to ZNBC other than all his documented failures in the past, bane wake up, there are a few chaps of questionable character on that board that is why we are in this quagmire. Mr Speaker sir, I beg to move, leave the parrot alone! He will just repeat what Sals said, and is there something wrong with CEOs starting with “S”

  13. we need to have ZNBC run like a business with the profit objective being paramount. As much as we appreciate its role as the Govt. mouthpiece we expect GRZ to pay for the service (commercial rates without VAT if you like!!)Find a CEO who can balance its operations between making profit and mouthing govt. policy!!

  14. #14 The Original Pundit, just see who are sitting in the board of ZNBC! A bunch of failures just follow their working history, they have failed and they are failurers

  15. Hear! Hear! Hear! Mr Speaker and our so “blind-leading-the-blind” Parley. Do we even have a generator at parliament? coz iyo tomorrow there will be another blackout , so forget about Ministerial (read Misleading!) statement.

  16. The strange and annoying thing about the statement from the ZNBC chairman is that he is silent on the K3000 license fee. Let him explain why that money can’t be touched. All ZNBC is interested in, is people to give them the entire K5bn without having to add any money from the TV license fee. Where is the money.

Shis is a suspected case of misuse of funds by ZNBC. They should stop using the phrase “Better TV” coz ZNBC has only gotten worse from the time we started paying.

  17. asking the minister to make a ststement is a waste of time. What should be done is probe ZNBC for financial mismanagement. ZNBC is behaving as if they don’t have a single coin yet they have the money we pay them. The money from other organisations and individual should have just been to supplement what ZNBC already has. But they the entire budget to be funded by outsiders yet they promised “better TV” when we pay.

ZNBC services have continued to be poor (in all areas).

  18. Easy (15),
Are you being sincere with yourself in that demeaning language of the people on the ZNBC board??? What failed credentials do they have and what are your outstanding achievements when you are still struggling to construct even a single sentence through your coherent rhetoric on the blog? Some times folks we over expose our irredeemable stupidity when self restrain would cover it up.I happen to know all the members on that board and their credentials are unparallel to say the least.

  19. ACC and other wings must move in. The License money could just be enriching certain individuals. Coz ZNBC (AFCON aside) has nothing or very little to show for the billions they receive from us on a monthly basis. They made big promises to us like “better TV” which we can’t see comming in 100 years.

  20. where is the venom-spitting moslem-muppet wannabe Abdulaziz and his false rants about how Chipolopolo was going to go down at the hands of the Sudanese, who have apparently chosen a wrong sport (soccer) when they have chosen basketball going by their stature.Abdulaziz this is a dose of our much famed chipolopolo style. Where are you muppet? Show your ugliness forth *****?

  21. All the comments in here make sense, but I am worried if really ZNBC is the best TV there is and why making the people pay for the poor broadcasting of the programs. Something has to be done really we are living at a time where change is all we need.

  22. All the past presidents never failed to air any of these matches. Not even euro cups. How is it that Mwanawasa just stood and watched?

  23. Did someone want online CAN08 live streaming? Try these great sites:satellitetvtopc.com; tvgrande.net. They are fun to subscribe too and you will definately get your bucks worth.

  24. We have talked alot on how ZNBC has failed us but they have not failed in getting our 3pins. The only solution is to stop paying the 3pins because what the 3pin does is make the board members richers by the day at the expense of repeat old movies and political false stories from one party MMD.

  25. Even if ZNBC had managed to raise all the money required to air the games, zambians wouldnt have been able to watch the matches anyway, what with the on-going countrywide zesco blackouts! Lose-lose situation. If zambia was a car, I’d throw it away and buy another one that is in working condition. Everthing seems to operating in some sort of faulty auto-pilot in this country. Including the so called leaders.

  26. Hon Speaker, please concentrate on more important issues affecting Zambia. As much as I love football so much, I would rather debates are centered on key issues like heavy rain and damage caused in all areas, what the disaster management team have done so far, progress if any on NCC. I can do with three meals a day as compared to having non but having the africa cup shown live on TV. Let some petty things be handled by cadres in the MMD rather than yourself, a man of esteem and respect.

  27. Mister speaker Sir. Dont bring your appetite for football in parliament. Talk of peoples developmental issues. Do you think you ZNBC will ever be a batter TV station? What has gone wrong in Zambia? Chiefs have turned into carders (Mwanachingwala and Kanongesha) Now is the speaker talking of football in parlaiment. Mai we, manje chavutilathu. Tommorow they will be discoussing about shortegy of beer in the parliament

  28. Quote: Seyuba explained that ZNBC could not bring any more partners on board to raise the required K5 billion in three days. The board Chairman said neighboring Malawi and Zimbabwe and Nigeria in West Africa are among countries that will not televise the matches… End of quote

    MY VIEW…
Seyuba is a failure. He failed at Zambia Breweries and KCM. How does he expect to raise K5bn in three days? How does he compare Zambia to the defuncted Zimbabwe and corrupt Nigeria? It is total bullshit…

  29. BETTER TV K3,000 BATULILAFYE IPIASHESU, THIS IS AN EXPAMPLE OF THAT THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THE MONEY R THIEFS. STOP CHARGIN FOR ZAMBIAN TV IF YOU CANT BRING MATCHES LIKES THESE

  30. I think its high time we stop paying ama 3,000 because they cannot show, suprising the Mr Mwanawasa is quiet about it. Twanaka nenu.

  31. hang on a moment znbc has a director general in salasini this chap had two years since the last AFCON to ask 32% of zambians to sacrifice k1 pin each in order 2 broadcast this tournament the guy sat on his laurels & waited til the 11th hour if he started this fund raiser he would have had k96 billion that’s enuff to fund the afcon 16 times over he is 2 blame that’s why his director general of znbc to take such executive decisions, abena zed lyonse niba president na ena na esha, twila concluda

  32. Ya amaparliament yambi tayakwata ifyakuchita mwe! Bola niye yoitaninapo muntu ku nyumba shuwa! Antu afuna zakudya namanyumba in that order! Amama neo!

  33. “Seyuba said in a statement today that the corporation recognizes the challenge government has at the moment due to floods that have affected many people in the country, who have been left homeless” – What a dull chap he is, Government allocates $$$$ for disasters like this whether enough or not its no excuse to expoit the flood situation and use it as an excuse. My point of view – YOU ARE FIRED!!!!!!

  34. FOOTBALL OR NO FOOTBALLznbc IS A DISGRACE. I SUGGEST THEY FIND PEOPLE WHO WILL MANAGE THE LOCAL STATION BETTER. I PERSONALLY EMBARRASED TO SHOW MY FRIENDS MY HOME CHANNEL.
WHY ARE PEOPLE EVEN PAYING 3 PIN WHEN THEY DONT GET ANYTHING? STOP!
