Kasama Chickens on ARVs and Contraceptives?

Share

Some broiler chicken breeders in Kasama are reportedly mixing feed with Anti-retrial Viral (ARV) and contraceptive drugs to feed their chickens.

Sources who declined to be mentioned told ZANIS that most of the chicken breeders are using the drugs which they are buying from the local drug stores in the area to mix with chicken feed so that they could grow fat and faster.

The sources cited an example of a retired civil servant whom they alleged to have been using the same method of rearing chickens which he later sells at k18, 000 per chicken.

The said chickens were weighing 2.5Kg each saying the growth was abnormal for chickens to be ready in three weeks.

And Kasama District Veterinary Officer Dr.Webby Chibomba confirmed having received such complaints from the general public that some chicken breeders were using ARVs and contraceptives to feed the chickens.

He suspected that the culprits must have some medical background while others are acting out of ignorance.

Dr. Chibomba told ZANIS in an interview that last year his office received similar complaints which he later forwarded to Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Kasama and recommended for the arrest of the suspect to pave way for investigations but was told to wait. Up to now no answer has come from DEC.

He said his department has no testing laboratories but instead depend on other stakeholders like DEC and health which handle drug abuse offences.

He explained that chicken breeders who are using the said drugs were drugging the consumers illegally saying it was a serious offence according to the laws of Zambia.

Dr. Chibomba further explained that the method has serious side effects on human lives because the white cells get impaired thereby affecting the immune system especially in people living with HIV/AIDS as the viruses become resistant to the treatment.

The veterinary officer lamented that it also affects family planning in couples while it might result in impotence in consumers.

He added that it was sad to note that some breeders have even gone to an extent of injecting chickens with penicillin while selling them out.

He expressed worry that this has resulted in disease resistance when one gets sick to respond to the prescribed medicine.

Meanwhile Dr. Chibomba said his department has embarked on an inspection programme which will be conducted on regular basis to ensure that the chickens are fed with right food.

He added that the hindrance to effecting the programme would be lack of transport since the work requires mobility to monitor the growth of chickens.

The Veterinary Officer, however, said the programme is an inter-sectoral programme which needs team work from all line ministries and support from stakeholders as the fight is a noble cause if the culprits are to be fished out.

He has since appealed to the general public not to be buying broiler chickens anyhow or supplement with indigenous chickens which feed mainly on indigenous foods.

  1. This ARV issue should be an “arrest the culprit issue” but the concerned parties should come up with sensitization programmes. It is all because of poverty, selfishness and quick cash. We need to act fast before it spreads to other parts of the country if has not yet.

  2. Imwe Ba Bemba nichani Kansi? I thought our Cellphone Zulu or Gearbox Banda names were a classic, but boy, this one beats us hands down. I will send my Sakala brothers and Ngoni chiefs to teach our Mbuyas the use of these drugs..ha ha ha ..serious but funny. Busakala ba bemba imwe. Fast cash ai?

Anyway, on a serious note the authorities need to move in fast and investigate this. Potential of ARVs resistance here and we shall pay dearly as a nation.

  3. ARREST THOSE CRIMINALS IN KASAMA AND BRING THEM TO PRISON…WHAT A SHAME!!
People are so desperate to make cash to doing anything..You see now what MMD has driven people to do!!

  4. Iwe ati ule lya inkoko kanshi u le lya na ma ARV. Who knows how many could be doing the same in Lusaka or Copperbelt? You have to be carefull which chickens you buy nowadays or where you get them from. There is a lot deception in the world today.

The perpetrators must be arrested. This is a serious case of drug abuse. Ba DEC mulikwi?

  5. this is the most bullsh!t story LT has ever come up with how can the editor allow crap like this to be viewed on the net i know as zambians we are transparent and speak our minds but come on lusaka times levy gave us integrity even tho we dont admit it, but lets not reduce our media credentials to petty journalism like this Mr editor, after the POST u are the next big thing come on man!!!!!! this is embarrasing, who did your media training……….. dennis liwewe?

  6. Another USELESS story. You can’t just hear a comment from a street kid and bana maliketi and you take that to the media. When Zambian going to stop listening to useless speculations? Arrest the guy who wrote this story.
And those people in Kasama are just jealous of the just retired civil servant.

  7. The chickens they are cheap na fatty’s.
    Viwama,it’s new technology.
Mudabwa chani chifukwa you can’t afford.

  8. vi ba bemba chabe,
muyenda ku clinic pretendin to be hiv+ and ya giv the drugs to chickens, musebanya. im fwantakadanktizedby this incident. twaya

  9. What? Can somebody move in quickly to stop this mess before lives of people are endangerd. I think this is not the way you do business. Welfare of a customer comes first. And when you see such things happening it means those involved do not understand care of duty they owe the customer. In this regard the govt should carry a test of all those that have eaten these chickens now before side effects start appearing in the years to come. If this is allowed further we shall have a disaster. Prosecute

  10. 13 CONT`D
These sellers are not doing business in a proper way. That has never happened and it will never happen. ARV`s and contraceptives meant for man are for man not birds. Hence the need for the relevant authorities to take quick stand right now. Why has the DEC taken so long to act? Some body should probe this now. Please help our people to have a normal life. Such businessmen are not needed in Zed. They are not honest. They are greedy at the expense of our people. Take them on.

  11. Stories must have a basis. Does this story have any invidence? May be it has ividence because kubabemba vinabwela mochedwa vachizungu. Please if it has invidence, then let the law follow. journalists you must be carefull with some stories which have no basis. Some people accuse others out of jealouse. Aona zake sizigulika chifukwa nizodula, zamuzake nizochipa and zigulika fast, then He/She comes in with false accusations. And these are abemba bekabeka mwaziba ka?. Vibabemba jealous.

  12. Lets get serious about issues like this. The normal thing to do is to take samples of these chickens and to test them. Any one found guilty should face the consequences. Poverty should not result in harm to other people. Do we not have the equivalent of a food standards in Zambia? Consider the health risks posed-strange diseases for one.Did Dr Chibomba follow up on the complaints as a responsible citizen would do? This is a serious matter that we should not joke about.

  13. The news this year/month is boring and too primitive. Where is SATA, bring us news man! Ba FTJ busy with ungly Regina?? Look now, people start discussing Chicken, nkuku and Inkoko? Zambians start growing dull and dull… especially some of these ZANIS jounalsist? Its a shame…

  14. The discussion is important because of future consequences i.e the health of affected Zambians, the health costs, the man hours that could be lost and the loss of human lives. Small things become big so this is not a small or dull matter guys!

  15. Word of warning, dodn’t ever eat white chickens when in Zambia. I have seen what shit they feed them 1st hand. There are no regulations, any one can come up with a concoction and sell as chicken feed.

  16. Its extremly sad that the ministry of Agric has not put in measures to control the keeping of chickens and as a result everyone is keeping chickens without following the proper methods. The effects of what is happening now in the chicken bussiness is yet to be seen. Lets have some control. you can not have people sleeping in one room and keeping chicken in the next. I stoped eating these chickens sometime back because they simply nausiate me. ViVa village chicken

  17. I totally agree with J J Banda, Viva village chicken. Why zambians are still eating these “GM” chickens is beyond home. If we all start eating village chicken those crroks will have no business.

  18. There is complete lack of regulation regarding chicken feed. I know of someone whos chickens actually swell after eating the feed he makes. People think the chickens are fat but infact they are swollen with the chemicals they are so toxic that they can’t walk.
Can some one with the right contacts or loud enough voice pleas bring this to the attention of our authorities.
You have been warned about eating white chickens in Zed, you will grow multiple genitelia.

  19. Iwe chi Abdulaziz, this is not a laughing or rather joking issue.only a stupid ignorant ***** like you would respond in such a silly manner.people`s lives are endangered, don`t you see? you have no heart at all,i wouldn`t be surprised to hear you are the devil`s young brother.I think village chicken really is the best to consume.shame on you guys who are involved in this dirty business

  20. This world has just become something else.Honestly elo kutemwa ulupiya kuti wasenda ama ARVS you put them in chickens and you sell people with a free concious.God forbid! No weapon formed against us shall prosper!

  21. Imwe mwe bantu, this is bushit, what is the government doing about this? Please stop spreading the rumours and send someone to go and look into this mess.
Do you know what ARV’s can do to you? You need to take this matter serious. Mwatusebanya kuma americans.

  22. I comment on this because, most of the time here in Zambia we are too ignorant of Issues like this one. we are been bribe by whites because we want to be rich. lets not worship whites. We shound not be taking issues like this one for granted. what if this things happen to our children or us parent what are we going to do, getting sick through chickens and are you going to happy about it, making fun about it.no! lets stand up and fight.

  23. It could be true, my neibour here in lusaka keeps chickens to sell. He gives the most toxic chemicals to fatten them, i see it every day. It is wide spread. If there are no regs do you think people will wait for the natural growth ?. Genuine feed is expensive so they come up with serious toxins as feed. My house hold will never ever eat a white chicken.
Also it not the commercial famers(i don’t know about thier feed) but back yard famers who i have witnessed feeding chickens swelling chemicals. But now a worrying development is some of these breeders are breeding chickens that look like village chickens but are in fact dammies feed on the same.

  24. Its true, all you haters dissing journalists about putting bad stories had better get a life! This story is so true and it not only in Kasama.

  25. #35 Pat,
It is easy to tell if it is village chique or imposter..
Ask the chique to stand on 1 leg, then ask chique to run.
If chique can not do any of these he is imposter. Don’t buy.

  26. VIBABEMBA CHAMBE. KFC (Kaunda Fried Chicken), you are dope. When I was in Zed and indeed in a few days i will be back, I will make sure I get my Nkhuku from villages surrounding LSK. I know people think this is a joke but if the so called Dr, Chibomba informed DEC about it then its an issue worth following.
Lets be realistic, what will happen to consumers of such in the longrun? Its shameful that some people are scared of being laughed at in The US. Put up a comment on how to sort out the mess rather than hiding from people looking down on u. wake up and Act! Atase
    Malabishi

  27. Pa zed imwe sure.Depo provera tested positive to big malaria. What next???We will go back to our tradition life.Nothing can be trusted any more.

  28. You know what if there’s anyone of you who has the true information regarding all these accusations, then bring it out to the rightfull authorities. But if we are basing these issues on rumours, then it’s better not to talk about it because then it just creatsanxiety in most of the people.

Talking about the chinese, is it true? If it is then why not phone police as anonymous and give details to that effect?

    Otherwise let’s stop rumour mongering.

    Mem.

  29. # 41 MM-LSK , do understand, there are no regulations regarding chicken feed. Report them and what will the popo charge them with ?. Any one can come up with a formula for chicken feed and start breeding in there back yard and sell on the chickns.
My niebour claims it is trial and error comming up with a formula for a fast growing feed, some times the chickens die or go blind or can’t walk. You just try untill they don’t die no more then you can feed them and take to the market.

  30. people say there is no smoke without fire…so there is need to investigate this matter fully and the culprits should be brought to book. No two ways about it…if people’s lives is to be saved. This really is inhuman…BIG MAN! Think again and behave like wise!

  31. am encouraged to know that zambians are using intiatives. this is a way forward to sustainable development.

the good thing is the intiative behind it.

lets think of many other brilliant ideas to create employment.

I hope they have no side effects.

    gaborone

  32. Please zambians lets not be cheated by theses whites, to them there are making money they just don’t do things for free when they go out there, their bosses wants a report on how many blacks are infected with HIV/AIDS thats the only way they get paid if the number is increasing.

Zambians be careful for what you being paid for you are killing your own children, mother, father and many more.

  33. # 47 Ms Maala, make sure you eat plenty white chickens when u are in Zambia.
”Who even thinks of such things”, do you know what povety can make a man do ?. You are living in cloud cuku land if u think this is far fetched.

  34. this also is an eye opening to us, for the bible says that in the end pipo will become lovers of money and themselves. For the love of money pipo can do anything even to kill just to have money.Be carefull, for we all know the love of money is the source of evil.May God help us

  35. We have actually come to the end of the world.if you don’t know God,this is your day to know Him.let us just stop buying chichens from whoever, to shame them.pantu nefisashi filawama.

  36. # 47 Ms Maala, i for one think you very dull and stupid. Get some education, and i mean real quick coz you re already half dead or dead meat for revealing such ignorance to the public. “Men perish coz of lack of knowledge”. Maala you re still living in the stone age where you think pipo are still stuck in one mind set.wake up old hag!

  37. Dr. Chibomba, kindly get down to bottom of this mess in your district and try to lobby for funds to set up a Public health lab in conjuction with other stakeholders such as MoH and bring the culprits to book. Good work and keep it up.

  38. You guys in Kasama, you are killing your fellow citizens slowly by giving illegal drugs as chicken feed to chickens sold as food. Where is Kachiluba to stop this mess he started? I know that uncontrolled capitalism can actually kill everyone in Zed. Maybe kali busy servicing fela’s replacement.

  39. This story really puts me off balance. It is either true or false. I strongly support the views of all concerned Zambians requesting for a thorough investigation in this matter.I know fwe ma Zambian twalitemwa uku concluder ifintu fast but please investigations first. One thing is for sure the image of the Lusaka times paper may be tanished and even the genuine chicken sellers may also not be trusted if this development is not quickly dealt with.So my fellow Zambians lets not ignore this issue coz we will live to regret the consequenses.

  40. Man thumbs up to the bembas for good research. That way they are helping those who are shy in taking ARVs. You dont have to have a University degree to know that there is no harm being caused to human beings, they only worry is that the subjects may be under dosed.

  41. Shit twice, this story is very sad indeed. Shame to Zambians, Shame!!! Let us fight this mess together and save our nation from perishing: disease and infertility!!!

  42. This is madness of the highest degree. The bible rightly say love of money is sin. How many people are now not responding to treatment because of the same? Even some of the relatives of this careless man. I am sure this man is HIV positive and is on ARVs, and because ARVs have improved his health he thinks he can also improve the health of his chickens. ARREST this man.

  43. you pipo who are condeming this issue its like you are in the same catigory. honestly speaking how can some one feed chickens with ARVs which is recommended to pipo with HIV? and contraceptive”” you know what; there are pipo who what to have babbies and he is busy giving them contraceptives, and ARVs is recommended to pipo with HIV and to take daily, if this pipo stop takng this ARVs they become half way mad i have seen this. if you are sick just take it your self becouse you deseved it? PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA LETS BE SERIOURS ON ISSUES LIKE THIS. BE WISE.

  44. You might as well add some Viagra to the Chicken-feed, I hear it adds to their weight and thickens the meat. Very delicious and the consumer stands high chances of performing well in bed.

  45. #65 you are a very funny person and i hope you are not serious about the Viagra thing. Good performance in bed may not be a priority in matters of health. As i said i know you were just jocking, infact i nearly died laughing when i read your comments. Please be good and comment wisely.

  46. WHEN EVER WE SAY BEMBAS ARE CROOKS YOU SAY WE ARE ….WE EASTERNERS KNOW THEM THATS WHY WE TREID TO GIVE A NGONI CHITIMUKULU IN IN 18 CENTURY…LEVEY SAKALA

  47. The coming of the son of man is very near.If atall what is be reported is true becuase this is total madness .This will stop me from eat likuhu
