First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa’s presidential candidature has received support from another chief with some urging her to declare her position early enough. Chieftainess Kalaba of the Ushi people in Mansa district has said First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has good leadership qualities and therefore can make a good president of Zambia.
The chieftainess also said her chiefdom would support Mrs. Mwanawasa’s candidature as president of Zambia.
In an interview with ZANIS at her palace yestarday, Chieftainess Kalaba said through the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) and her interaction at international level the, First Lady has shown to the country that she can lead the country to prosperity.
The traditional leader called on the entire women folk in the country to rally behind and support Mrs. Mwanawasa if she stands for presidency.
“There is nothing wrong for a female president and it is not about gender that we are supporting her but about her ability and qualification to lead this country better than some men who have so far expressed interest,” chieftainess Kalaba said.
She said Zambia was ready to have a female president and asked women to support each other.
“Those assertions that we are not ready for a female president are not true. Leadership is granted by God. So if God has this time chosen a woman who are to object,” said the Cheiftainess.
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler has advised Mrs. Mwanawasa to consider standing as president and announce her interest in the position of president early enough.
Some sectors of the community have said the First Lady was suitable to run for national presidency in the 2011.
And recently President Mwanawasa said that MMD members interested in party positions should come out and announce the positions they were aspiring for.
Dr. Mwanawasa, however, cautioned Cabinet Ministers against being preoccupied with campaigns at the expense of work.
Only villages would support retrogresive ideas, no radio, no worse TV, no printed toilet paper. What good would come from them??
This nonsence should be brought to an end forthright. This woman has never managed anything significant besides her foundation founded by virtue of being married to Mwanawasa and suddenly these unwise stinking chieves now think she can be president of Zambia. We still recall these same fools campaigning for illegal Chiluba’s third term on the premise that he needed to finish his programs that were not there to begin with apart from the plundering one.

Looking at the voting demography in Zambia the past two elections MMD lost among all the informed urban population, but that block of urban vote was not enough to beat the rural block vote. MMD can afford to ignore the Urban and focus on villagers and still keep plot 1. They have done it twice and this is the same strategy playing out here. Guys, there`s no problem with Maureen standing as a presidential candidate. She should start from the grass root as a ward chair-person first. Learn how to do politics from there then rise through rank and file to become provincial leader. She can`t just jump to plot one. It doesn`t work that way. My advice to her is to do just that. Maureen you are a political novice and you need to gain momentum and experience. Therefore go back to the grass roots and abrase yourself with real politcs.

If all female presidents were to be called by this title then surely male dominance and the under rating of women power holds supreme. We are all entitled to our own opinions and yes so much has been said about Mrs Mwanawasa, its up to her to stand up and tell the nation what her plans are. I think having a lady to lead the country is not abad idea, I think Zambians are not yet ready yet. Also with respect to the first lady, itis not for her to think that the party does not have qualified male or female to stand for presidence. It makes nosence to the country. If MMDdoes not have qualified candidates,then other parties will definately succeedin the presidency of thecountry. We have been preaching about corruption, therefore,we need transparency in the country.Zambia is democratic, not a chiefdom where firstlady need to learn that even as a woman i would not support the idea myself. It is a corrupt thinking.His excellence should advise the wife on this issue if MMD hasto go on.
THis is really funny. Last time I checked Zambia was a democracy and not a monarchy. This reminuds me of the dilema in Pakistan where Benazir Bhutto’s son is taking over the political party. We want fresh ideas to help us move forward. Hey of course she plays an influence in the decision making process by advising her husband. We want change not some stagnant system of out dated ideas. Sorry to say this but do you think the exposing of ones dity laundry in public is a good leader ship quality? That shows some ones over hyped ego and lack of full maturity.
