UPND call for resignation of Zesco top managers

Share

The United Party for National Development (UPND in Ndola has called for the resignation of Zesco top managers for the failure to deliver to the people’s expectations.

UPND District Chairman Mr. Kanyaka Musa in a statement to ZANIS in Ndola said the top management should resign on moral grounds because they have let the country down.

He said the party was disappointed and condemned Zesco’s inertia in the power supply which has resulted in colossal losses including human lives.

He said it was unjustified for Zesco to fail to deliver to people’s expectations, which had caused a lot of damage to electrical appliances for individuals and companies.

Mr. Musa said he did not see the justification for increased tariffs when the quality of services was going down.

He said the people demand that Zesco should give a valid explanation for the power failure before his party embarks on massive demonstrations countrywide.

He wondered why Zesco was busy circulating bills to clients when the their service was below par and power outages were becoming common.

He said citizens were the investors in Zesco as a parastatal company but that the company has not been remitting dividends to show its competency to the public.

Meanwhile, Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) Mufulira division has temporarily shut down some of its essential equipment and machinery following the recent power outage that the country has been experiencing.

The mine plant is not working and operating at full capacity and has decided to switch off its smelter and concentrator in the interim.

Mufulira District Commissioner (DC) Dyford Muulwa has confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview in Mufulira today.

Mr. Muulwa further disclosed that the mining firm has already informed him about the latest developments adding that only partial production was taking place at both smelter and concetrator.

He added the temporal shut down of key facilities at MCM will definitely affect production at the mining conglomerate.

Mr. Muulwa observed that Mopani was currently compiling a detailed report for his attention to quantify the amount of copper and forex that has been lost following the shut down.

  1. The current problem ZESCO is facing is purely a consequence of lack of proper foster planing. I wonder why ZESCO engineers can fail to do a basic balance between energy output and demand. With the exponential growth in the mining sector in Zambia the power defecit should have been anticipated and taken care of. Whether we like it or not we need a capital investment in energy otherwise the dream of Zambia’s economical growth will be shattered.

  2. How I wish some of the informed engineers at ZESCO could fill-in the information vaccuum on this forum. If the disruption was caused by a problem in Zimbabwe, why did the safety mechanisms fail, why did it take long to find the problem. If we actually have an energy shortfall in the country, then all the mining investment will come to nothing. In that case it’s not ZESCO but the Government who should take the blame.

  3. The situation is that the zimbabwen engineers are to blam. As our fellow african engineers we know about their economic plight so we lend the last supply of lubricating oils we had with promise that a shipment was due via SA within the week. That was 3 months ago. so we only found out that the turbines were working with no lurication for the past 3 months when it was too late. We usaully lubricate weekly. Dont let anyone lie to you.

  4. In zambia there is nothing like resigning on moral grounds.Have yet to hear of an Manager or political leader who actually resigned on moral grounds. They all wait until they are fired.

  5. Mb (#3), are you saying it’s the Zim turbines that failed? Maybe Zim should not be part of the grid untill they improve their situation.

  6. No, the zim turbines are fine, maintained by oil from us, it is our turbines that are failing becuse they were no routin maintenance was don for 3 months due to lack of lubricants given to zim. I am not saying anything but no one cared if routine maintenance was been done or not.

  7. While it may be very true that Zimbabwe and ZESCO are to blame for the black outs, it is only fair for us to base our arguments on facts. Assumptions, opinions and gut feelings should be eliminated as a platform for making sound judgements. The looming power deficit in the SADC region and most of Africa was predicted far way back and it is the serious lack of political will to support constructive issues that has landed us in these problems. Our leaders are very much preoccupied with trivial and petty issues and political survival strategies than anything else. There is no way you can preach economic development without addressing critical factors like energy that would facillitate this econ

  8. Continued: that would facillitate this economic growth and development. You see right now I am in Germany and I have seen massive investments in wind and solar energy here. We have more than abundant sunshine in Africa for solar energy but should the Europeans who are even disadvantaged naturally in as far as sunshine is concerned priotise energy strategies such as solar while we sit idle and watch. Shame on us. Africa please wake up and do not just wait for Europe to bell you out every time you have a crisis.

  9. # 9/10 , you Willard Mwemba, since you have seen this happening in germany what are doing about it to bring this technology back home ?. Nothing i bet, big mouth no action, complain, complain and blame others. Do some thing about it, start a forum or some thing.
    ALA.

  10. It is true what mr Mwemba has said,he has tekn the frist satp to identifie the problem,so i dont see why we shuold ask the man what he has don,its high time we did somthig togther

  11. #3 Let us be serious in our contributions. Do you honestly know how a turbine works? How can a turbine run without oil for three months? Contribute to enlighten others and not mis-inform.
