MMD adopts Sinfukwe for Kanyama by-elections

Share

The ruling Movement for Multyparty Democracy (MMD) has floated Mwalimu Sinfukwe as its candidate for the Kanyama parliamentary seat which fell vacant after the death of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) MP Henry Mtonga.

And government has dispelled remarks by some sections of the media that it has with immediate effect withdrawn Depo Provera on suspicion that the drug was contaminated with HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Lusaka today, MMD National Elections Chairman Mike Mulongoti said the MMD has decided to float Mr Sinfukwe because of his commitment to the ruling party and the many projects that he has been doing in Kanyama Constituency.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said the MMD also decided to adopt Mr. Sinfukwe because appeals made by the residents of Kanyama who pledged support to the aspiring candidate.

Earlier, MMD Kanyama by-elections campaign committee Chairperson Dr Brian Chituwo said his committee has adopted and recommended Mr. Sinfukwe to the MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) as its Kanyama aspiring candidate.

He further disclosed that the party had received eight applications from a cross section of society and that out of the eight applications, two were women.

And at the same briefing, Health Minister Dr Brian Chituwo dispelled media reports that government has with immediate effect withdrawn Depo Provera on suspicion that the drug had an HIV/AIDS virus.

Dr Chituwo said according to the first laboratory tests carried out in South Africa, the drug has proved that it was safe as it met the safety regulatory standards contrary to media reports.

He said government through his ministry was concerned about the reports that the drug was not safe adding that government will give out a comprehensive report on the latest finding soon in a bid to clarify the reports that have been made by some sections of the media.

Dr Chituwo said like all drugs distributed by pharmaceuticals, Depo Provera had met the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards and it was therefore, unfortunate that an impression had been created that the drug was unsafe.

On Saturday, Dr Chituwo was quoted as saying government has with immediate effect withdrawn the contraceptive on suspicion that the drug had an HIV/AIDS virus.

  1. More than 40 yrs after independence,Zambia should be able to start producing most of these common drugs, contraceptives and vaccines locally. If not yet doing so lets send professionals to go and train to produce the meds from these producing countries. Who knows whatelse is added to our donated vaccines to control our population. Lets wake up!!! WE don’t want to be given fish everytime, we can learn how to catch it. Our lives should not be controlled on somebody’s palm or PDA.

  2. Of course the government can be bribed because we still rely on other countries for analyses.
There is no smoke without fire, this is all about Human Carrying Capacity of the current globe trends.

    Watch-out fellow Zambians

  3. The Chiefs are not issueing statements over Maureens third term bid but answering to questions paused by Jounalists. The question is, Which media editorial meeting has mandated Jounalists to be asking Chiefs such questions. Are these responses news worth. Some Jounalists are being paid to ask such questions to unsuspecting chiefs. The next thing we will hear will be demands from the MMD members forcing MMD mininsters and MPs to express their opinion to the question.
Remember Hon: Zukas,Badat, Patel, Harrison and others were harassed for them express their opinion over the third term.

  4. Whats the best way to guarantee that you don’t suffer like FTJ? Don’t we know who is behind this? Chaona munzako mawa……

  5. With due respect Minister of Health, we shall not use that drug at any cost. There is indeed no smoke without fire. HIV/AIDS is also an economic problem and opportunity. Its a problem to countries like Zambia and yet such a lucrative business for developed countries, so these will do anything to perpetuate its existence. Howmany people are now employed in this HIV/AIDS fighting business??? Laboratories, doctors, name them all from developed countries. It’s time Zambia rose above its problems and begin sorting them out and for this to happen all stakeholders need to be supported especially local Zambians in their endeavors to combat this pandemic. Unfortunately, we are still a very corrupt

  6. #7 cont’d – nation, our attitude is what kills us to develop. When am asked what is the major constraint to development in Zambia, there is just one answer, “ATTITUDE”. It has killed both policy formulation and implementation and even as individual citizens, look at how we do things. It’s horrible.
BaChituwo, limbi imwe bamadam balifika pa menopause, but for us young women, awe bane, forget that contraceptive. I would rather use traditional contraceptive instead of that. Viva local contraceptives, viva Zambian utilisation of Zambian products for a prosperous Zambia!!!!

  7. The latest comment on the drug from Chituwo is the biggest lie. He is the one we saw on TV on saturday saying the test that was done in Zambia showed that the drug was contaminated. It is suprising that he can now start accusing the media. Genetlemen let us be honest and stand by our words not accusing the media. On this account i would demand for Chituwos resignation he has failed the nation.

As for the drug, people watch out never use it

  8. Gentlemen, people can longer be taken for granted by politicians anymore.Post reports PF in Kanyama have rejected a “Chanda” fielded by PF.I think its high time people governed meaning not only do they have to field a candidate, they even vote the cadidate themselves. This is democracy, parties cannot dictate proceedings anymore. We are going somewhere, I have hope for a better zambia.

  9. BA GOVT TELL THE TRUTH AS PEOPLE WHO MAY DIE AS A RESULT OF UNKNOWINGLY BEING INFECTED SHALL HAUNT YOU THE REST OF YOUR LIVES.

  10. These by-elections are just a waste of money and resources. I suggest we hold elections only once every 5 yrs. If chaps die or resign, the incumbent party should have the mandate to nominate a replacement. Imagine if Cycle Mata expels his rebel MPs? We’ll be talking of what? 15 by-elections! This nonsense needs to come to an end and I hope the shady NCC will debate this issue thoroughly. This stupid by-election is already costing K1.4 bn, money that can be well utilised to sort out the poor sanitaion & roads in Kanyama! And we wonder why we are poor?

  11. Chituwo is full of monkey tricks! Wasn’t this the ka same chap who recently said that 2 HIV antibody tests had proved positive? Why should he change today and claim the media have been spreading rumours? We need serious people in Govt and not such kind of chimpanzees, there’s no smoke without fire. Why didn’t Chituwo’s people carry out conclusive tests here before he made his earlier pronouncement? Why alarm the nation for nothing? Why depend on tests from SA? let’s improve our own lab facilities in Zed. With all due respect, Chituwo niwe kolwe zoona

  12. correction…according to the ECZ, the Kanyam by-election is actually going to gobble up K4.3 bn!!!…and not the amount I earlier alluded to

  13. Chituwo, since your wife has reach manopause you should distribute those drugs to cockroaches in your house so that they stop multiplying. I hear they part of the your household.

  14. Is Depo Provera the onhly contraceptive drug we have? If some thing has been suspected, dont risk your life by taking it. Its even better to use natural birth contral than using these contraceptives. Infact 90% of drugs have side effect and if we can turn back to what our ancesters used, We can not only save life but have more health life. Now it is true that some HIV is just infected to people by the people who have the transnational phamacetical campanies in order to mantain and increase profit. Some people can hardly understand how they aquiered the virus but because they are marred, they accuse each other but some times both are innonsent. Remembe what happened in Lybia.

  15. If you dont know what happened in Lybia, foreign nurses and Doctors after investgations were cought infecting young children with the HIV virus. And if that can happen, what about in Zambian? Doctor Chituwo, dont blame the meadian when you yourself you tald the people about the danger of Depo Provera. Just because one ambassader has deffended that and you can risk the whole nation for the sake of the foreign voice. Im not suprised with you because I know you as a bootliker and being a military man its worse. Zambians know that military people are tought to obey the authorities no matter what situation. We are in danger here. Bo Mama na Bo baba THINK BIG

  16. HIV/AIDS is largly an economical issue because transnational phamacetical copmanies are making big profits and they also look at ways of maintaing these profits.HIV people suffer from different optimistic diseases forcing them to seek treatment time and again. But the ones who benefit from all these are the transnational phamacetical companies who are the producers of drugs.I dont know comercy but what I know is “More demand, more profit” is the comercy law. And if you cant find demand you need to creat demand. This is what some transnational phamacetical companies do as they did in Lybia. A word of advice to Chituwo, “SHUT UP AND RESIGN”

  17. ba Think Big naimwe #18-20, bola panshi. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but try using spell check next time, perhaps even google or wiktionary. “comercy”, “lybia”, “phamacetical”…dude, pls spare us the agony of reading your intellectual comments.

  18. Tarantino, be agood man. You know there i always a problem when you are thinking in Bemba and writing in English.
