They will be No Hike of Meal Allowances for UNZA Students – Levy

Share

President Mwanawasa says government will not increase the meal allowances for students at the University of Zambia Great East Road Campus and at the Copperbelt University.

President Mwanawasa says government will not pay students at the two universities more than what has been budgeted for.

He was speaking to journalists at Lusaka International Airport shortly before departure for Japan where he is going to attend the Tokyo International Conference on Africa’s Development.

Dr. Mwanawasa pointed out that students at both institutions of higher learning are paid a reasonable amount.

He explained that students on government bursaries are getting more than what the average general worker in government gets and that students should appreciate the sacrifice of taxpayers from whose tax their allowances come.

The President however said government regrets the fact that Police officers used live bullets to disperse the demonstrating students.

Dr. Mwanawasa appealed to the students to always use peaceful ways in airing their grievances to authorities instead of rioting and thereby exposing themselves to such dangers.

He said there was no point for the students to attack and stone innocent motorists adding that his motorcade upon arrival from Mansa was also diverted from the Great East road to Kamloops road due to the unrest at the learning institution.

Meanwhile, President Mwanawasa has condemned the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Dr. Mwanawasa, who is also SADC Chairman, pointed out that the freedom of South Africa was achieved as a collective effort among South Africa and neighbouring countries.

He expressed sadness at the fact that people from various countries in the region resident in South Africa have been subjected to violent treatment even when they have permits.

He noted that there are several South Africans living and doing business in various countries in the region but they are not being harassed by any one.

Dr. Mwanawasa appealed to South Africans to reflect and think whether their behaviour is in line with the unity that is talked about and promoted in Africa.

The President, who left this afternoon at about 15:50 hours, was seen off by Vice President Rupiah Banda, Cabinet Ministers and their Deputies, Senior government and MMD officials and party cadres.

  1. Nice job Levy, let the students earn some of their money by working. Most students from UNZA are lazy!! They are used to be spoon fed by the Government.

Infact all ex students need to pay back the Government for helping to take care of their tuition, plus meal Allownces. Where in the world to you get FREE Education and not pay back?? My Fellow Zambians you are a Joke!!

  2. UNZA students learn to live within your means. Leaving beyond your means is a sign of failure to cope. Though, its not entirely your fault. While most of us have been brought up living on our parents/guardians manangement, its neverr too late to set priorities on how best to use the trois cent mille Kwacha. It wont be easy but try to make the best of the situation. All the best with the adjustments…

  3. When Levy puts his foot down, it stays there. UNZA students, its time you started earning your money. Next time the whole idea of meal allowance might get scrapped off.

  4. Suggestion:
EX UNZA wouldnt it be nice to set up a trust fund for students who really need assistance. Some of you have bragged about how educated you are and how you are making those Euros and dollars in the diasposra. Do something positive with some; Imagine what 45 EXUNZA giving $20 a month towards the trust fund for one semester could do?

  5. I do agree that the zed governamental resources are scarce and hence it would be un realistic to add salt to the injury by borrowing in order to satisfy student demands. Its also good that some bloggers are encouraging students to seek part-time jobs to suppliment their allowances. Its however worth considering the conditions where there universities are located before we can suggest that ” go find part-time job”. Zambia is poor and there are no industries readily available to employ part-time students like what prevails in other developed nations where a students earns more than a Zambian civil servant. In this case, the parents shld shoulder the burden of extra student needs.

  6. #8 You are right. If ex UNZA students are really proud of where they went, we should see an endowment or support group. And I mean all committed Aluminis to do this. In most instutions I know, they could be a powerful voice. Come on EX UNZA COME OUT IN THE OPEN RATHER THAN WALK THE TALK.

  7. I knw of one former UNZA students now a VIP (HH) who sponsers 10 UNZA students. Can other former students doing well come out and follow HH’s footsteps.

  8. These UNZA students don’t pay rent, electricity bills, water bills and they live within campas so they don’t spend any money on transport. How can they say the money they are getting is not enough for meals? There are people who get the same kind of money and run families with school going children!

They go out to stone vehicles belonging to innocent people. The very people whose tax contribution it is they are benefiting from. How spoilt can these chaps be?

  9. Thats the way to do it Levy, i know of many UNZA students getting 100% bursaries. Why they resort to evil ways to air their views, one still wonders.

    Grow up UNZA students.

  10. THE PROVISION OF FREE EDUCATION FOR ALL WAS ONE OF THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY AND SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMMES INSTITUTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER INDEPENDENCE. WHAT HAS FOLLOWED SINCE IS RETROGRESSIVE AND DESPICABLE. ARE THE STUDENTS EXPECTED TO LEARN ON EMPTY STOMACHS, WHILE THOE IN POWER GROW FATTER BY THE SECOND? DO NOT TREAT STUDENDS AS BEGGARS.

  11. your decision mr president is welcome, its ethically accepted since it is made in the interest of the general public.I propose sir that if they make any noise may the inde bwanas be permited to discipline these chaps.Thankyou

  12. Ayas,i have always that this BC is only a minimum govt is not there to treat you aha aha!

Next time whoever throws stones should not only be charged with criminal damage to property(or intent) but forfiet his bursary,am sure there plenty zambians dying for an opportunity

  13. Ya Levy is right in Uk u pay for all so y we r not paying fees in ZAMBIA and y wait for the goverment to do so gone r the days of KK please let us go with the time infact Levy should charge all these fool at UNZA fees and not a free trip and when they leave UNZA they go abroad and work what has ZAMBIA got from them so it is now the time to make a law those who have got free ride at UNZA they eighter pay back or work for the goverment till the money is fully paid back teach these fools a lesson

  14. Actually those basaries should be turned into loans. Even in the richest countries its free like UNZA pipo have to pay back the loans

  15. Mwanawasa is right its not fair that those guys at UNZA get allowances whilst in other collages like NIPA and Chinama Collage do not have access to these funds. Most of them come from rich families yet they want to get even what the government is providing for poor Students. Dont be like David in the Bible??? Some of us are studying outside Zambia because there was no place for us at UNZA or CBU. The same rich pipo who got our places are the ones complaining. Tell your parents to help you!! am sure they can afford. Dont destroy our cars and we want to pass through great east road!!!!

  16. I think what the GOvt should do is to get rid of this animal called bursaries and also scrap off fees for deserving students.UNZA students must learn to be self reliant while still at campus.Let them start doing some piece works like bu malonda to raise more money for chibuku. As for the momas they can continue doing using their bottom power to raise money.

  17. I tried going to the coppernet.zm site a while ago and all I got was a black page saying ‘Hacked by Turkish Hacker’. Has anybody else noticed? May be if UNZA graduates concentrated on studying, they would design better security into these websites. The Zimbabwe Herald newspaper site was also hacked recently.

  18. please tell this fool SATA to shut his dirty mouth and just smoke and die peacful is he the one who is going to pay for the damages to the cars that UNZA dogs have done SATA is a fool what type of a head of state will he be if he becomes one why cant he pay those dogs at UNZA from his pocket he is a fool dont know what he is talking he is sheeting in a plate that he eat from if i was the president of ZAMBIA i would let him die and not to send him to SA let us do away with such people

  19. Indeed, I like to put my finger on the pulse of any irony of interest and share my findings to keep you in-the-know with the savviest trend setters and infomaniacs.

  20. Its too bad how the Zambian government is reacting to the calls of students either at home or abroad. The UNZA students are being shot at now when trying to make their demands be heard. What about the students oversea, what can they do that they can not even demonstrate because they in the foreign coutries. Give an example of Zambian students in Algeria and Russia who were recently visited by the Depute Mister of Education My Sinyinda who told the nothing new but the usual story that their allowances will not be increased.

  21. UNZA and CBU Students are not Teenagers in high school. These are adults who enjoy all the trappings of grown ups at University, including living with spouses/girlfriends in hostels. They must start supplementing their bursaries to partly finance their study programmes as well pay for their ration by taking up part-time jobs in hotels, private companies and other income-generating initiatives. Students in Europe/North America do just that and we all know it.UNZA Dean of Students and The Students Unions can work out special arrangements with private companies/hotels, retail chains for Students’ part-time work. Govt must start treating bursaries as loans & recover them from employed graduates.

  22. “No army, no force, however strong, can defeat the idea whose time has come.” by Dr Kenneth Kaunda.Time to build an entrepreneurial and self supported tertiary education in Zambia has come.

  23. Youngman Chapi,
Where at thou? I’m impressed you heed to the counsel to cut on your blogging habits. But get back to the thread “Simple Majority Electoral System must be Maintained” – Lifwekelo. I have some hours to burn out today Monday May 26,2008 heard on issues of public debate.

  24. Youngman Chapi,
Where at thou? I’m impressed you heed the counsel to cut on your blogging habits. But get back to the thread “Simple Majority Electoral System must be Maintained” – Lifwekelo. I have some hours to burn out today Monday May 26,2008 heard on issues of public debate.

  25. 25#I gree with you but who can employ such type of violent individuals. These students should be asking those studying in the west. You study, work and pay for your studies, rent, food and there is no room for having time to resort to violence because every second is precious.Laziness is a killer in these two universities. The culture of throwing stones is yesterday and has no room whatsoever. If these chaps think, attacking innocent people and their properties is a way of showing their anger then they are mistaken. It is good that there are very few/no CCTV cameras to catch your images and use them against you to pay insurance damages to those innocent people.

  26. Contd: Live within your means and learn to appreciate that those people you are trying to attack are the ones who pay for you bursaries and food allowances that you use to buy expensive things beyond your means.Grow and come to the real world of hard work and prosperity.

  27. We do not go to school of higher learning to eat like at preschool but to learn so that we can come and eat.You young UNZA students want to reap before sowing. Moreover not all of finish up courses.

  28. THERE IS TOO MUCH PROSTITUTION AT CAMPUS AND THAT MONEY IS ACTUALLY USED TO PAY FOR SEX!I WOULD NOT SEND MY CHILDREN THERE COZ THE PLACE IS A SEX DEN!

  29. I dont know why it has taken so long to erase the notion that govt should shoulder all the cost for meal allowances when it is clear that the country has opted out of many things such as free housing for civil servants, council owned housing in preference for self reliance. It is the duty of every parent to feed his own children, govt can only meet them partially! We need to plan our families in such a way that we can afford to educate them upto tertially level! Don’t just bear children you cant afford to support and in future your kind starts stoning motorist for meal allowance? Shame on us parents, family planing services are free including condoms! Lets us have children we can manage!

  30. Thanks mr president, its only mwanawasa who can lead zambia for the best of its people because he is straight to the point and keeps his word.

  31. Sata has a very short length of memory, was he not the one who only a few years ago incited Kadobi and Scorpion to “pangaula” innocent people in Kuomboka Chawama just because they would not vote the the MMD candidate? How many times did he and Chiluba close the university, countless times. Now today, after Levy spent millions of our tax payers’ money to send him to South Africa for a heart attack he brough upon himself for relentless smoking, drinking and “sansamkation” with not just his wife but whores of all manner, he wants to lie to us that he cares about UNZA students? Atase!

  32. I am teaching at a University in outside zambia and no student here is paid by the government here. Why should students be paid by the government and yet the money is not paid back after finishing. They should stop paying these students so that they learn to fend for themselves. At my university, students do part time work just to raise money for meals. Why can’t our students do the same. Companies should also take a leading role in sponsoring students at unza. They should not just employ graduates when they did not train any. Infact what the government should do is whenever a company emloys a graduate, that company should start paying a certain amount of money to the government.

  33. # 32 Useless as you are at thought, dont exhibit your total incompetance and lack of analytical skills to the world at alarge. If i were you i would ve kept all that rubbish in my empty head.Think of ways to solve the problem and look at the origins (root cause) which is SELFISHNESS OF OUR LEADERS and their NEGLIGENCE towards education coz it means danger to them…think #32 pls.

  34. “The President however said government regrets the fact that Police officers used live bullets to disperse the demonstrating students.”

What are doing to ensure that this live-bullet SHOOTING behaviour does not come up again, Mr President?

Please, do not underestimate the monks and mamas. Some of them are studying highly technical course. We do not want to hear and/or see deaths of either our policemen or UNZA students, please.

  35. What the President said is illogical.Whilest the behaviour of unza students might have been wrong, the chaps deserve increaments.Zambians must be motivated at every level,we should now fight for national pride,we have to share the national cake.We just have 2 universities and we must make sure these universities fall in the top 50 and then top 20 and then top 10,rankings but this requires money and the govt is supposed to provide the money for students and managemet.its gona be good for the country

  36. lets not compare Zambia to European or developed countries most of the Zambian parents cant afford to pay for their children in universities .Gentlemen we are a developing country and we depend on govt.when we will be a middle income country no one is gona care about govt support but to achieve that govt needs to invest in quality human resource ,patriotism and that calls for money. The money is there so give the chaps

  37. Nice one #40. We have 3 GRZ universities though of which one is called something like Mulungushi University.

The ranking of UNZA in Africa and the World leaves much to be desired. This clearly entails that something has to be done immediate if we have to have pride in our (Zambian) education system.

I call for GRZ to revisit its stand on the current impasse regarding Univ. students’ allowances of which the Meal one is just part.

  38. #37 what is bothering you much? The republican president Chuchu has categorically stated that there will be no increment ku musheto. If your parents manufuctered 20 in your family thats your own baby to nurse.Don’t vent your anger on innocent citizens by endangering their lives.Chuchu himself had his convey diverted just becoz of ingrids like you uncle sam. Please shut up.

  39. #42 You a nice guy, I can feel you.We have to improve our university ranking but this calls for money.I met met your Deputy Minister of Education Hon Sinyinda not long ago ,He was travelling to Russia from Algeria ,we were in the same hotel.Am sure you know the benefits .We talk of tourism but having Unza in the top 20 will help market Zambia and at the same time provide the high class man power and still instill Zambian pride

  40. it is high time parents started planning for these things like setting up accounts to cover education. we need to learn the culture of planning and saving. once you decide to have a child , start saving to make sure that child is covered weather you die or not and that money should cover for education

  41. #45 Zambia is under populated and the Zambian govt is supposed to motivate parents to produce more children by giving free eduaction and health.Parents are not supposed to be blamed let them produce children

  42. For once, I can see most of you learning to appreciate our president and his work. I enjoyed reading today’s comments on this topic more than yesterday’s. Let’s keep on with the progressive spirit, o ye beloved country men and women, then there will be no space for the few bad seeds among us!

  43. Thanks #44. Once UNZA can be ranked reasonably, it will be easy to convince companies – multinational companies included – to take up its graduates and also sponsor some students there.

One of the past few days, may last week, a Zambian friend of mine studying abroad with here though we are in different univeristies told me that Australia only recognises 4 univerities in Africa allegedly according to one of their embassies.

Not one of our Zambian universities make it in that list of 4. This shows us just how much we need to take UNZA, CBU and the rest seriously.

Enjoy, I am busy writing up.

  44. #48 I understand what you talking about I told Deputy Minister about it ,He seemed to agree with me tho idont know if he understood me.Zambian politicians can be tricky at times.lets hope for the best ,am grateful there so many Zambians out there thinking about our university rankings

  45. @ Choma1….since when increasing meal allowances become synonimous with raising a university ranking…..

Can you please care to explain?…..i tell you what, why not take a wee walk on one of the UNZA and CBU paydays to kalingalinga or chipata compound in kitwe and see how these places are swamped with students chasing after whores and some home made alcohol, notice how the female students dress, not even a first world university student dresses as such.

And you mean to say doubling or tripling the meal allowance will change their attitudes? you are joking mate

    Ta

  46. #43 would any human being try to reason with this moriband.he sounds like he never been to school.Bring your thoughts and solutions to this problem at unza and CBU.Do not attempt to exhibit your ignorance, and lack of ideas here.Keep that well cooked and fermented idiosy to yourself.UKAZI NKALA NA NZELU…

  47. whether you like it or not, family planning is a reality and should be taken seriously, osati kubala monga nkhumba! You cant hav children with the hope that the community will take care of them! Those things are gone! Even where socialism/communism was manufactured, things have changed! Zambians should start being responsible about how they want want their children raised and educated. Otherwise you will be reproducing slaves for other people who have well planned families, mwana wanu azankala kaboyi chabe! It is just impossible for a struggling country like ours to give free services for every unplanned child! Lets be responsible!!!!!!

  48. #50
its all about motivation.money can be a lubricant.Access to so many things thus creating an enabling environment for learning and research.By the way even civil servants are fighting for pay rise. The MPs had the perks increased.National Cake man

  49. It is a tradition of unza to throw stones it is part of the laerning process .levy was militant at unza, did he not throw stones and divert kk’s motorcade.life takes a full circle what you do always comes back to you .kk was using tear gas to break up demonstrations .levy takes up guns at his own citizens to remain in power.when you were sworn in to protect the citizens of zambia. So shall you be judged.levy is ultimately responsible for police brutality.

  50. Ba Muwelewele,u don’t know what it means to live on a K300 000.Its too little. Why can’t you be considerate. You increase prices of mealie meal, bus fares etc,and yet the B.C isn’t increased. Its hard. Its really difficlut to cope with that.
Ba UNZA students ,you are just a bucnh of foolish intellectuals. How do you stone cars and innocent people. Why not stone GRZ MoE offices or cars? You are a shame and big disgrace. Its unfortunate that 2 students were caught up in the wind with live bullets, but now that shud teach you all a lesson.

  51. If that is true bwana Tboz then Zambia is in for a long stretch.i wonder if LPM will stick to the budget as well. That number of fleeing Zimbabwean refugees from South Africa in to Zambia will definitely disturb the economy.

  52. number 14 what centuary are you living in. not even the most developed countries in the world offer university education absolutely free. all graduates who find work in areas related to their field of study have to pay back all that they borrowed. the catch is that the loans are interest free. we just can not afford it as a nation. and if you ask me most of them just want to use the money to live extravagant lives they just can not afford. they need to learn to live within their means

  53. Not again, we helped these guys prior to 1980 should we be subjected to other expenses 30 years later. No man besides now we know that these M@#$%ers dont even appreciate. Let us control our borders before they enter so that we dont suffer the way RSA has.Look at those Zulus we feed them keep them then they turn on us The same with these shonas after we keep them they turn on us and start calling us names. Look at them now.

  54. T BOZ dont scare us. If those refugees from RSA hit our shores then our economy will be screwed for real. Ihope the reports are wrong.

  55. The situation in Zed is pathetic to say the list. Whereas students elsewhere do part time jobs, the situation there is impossible because there are no jobs at all. The only solution, like somebody else said is to seriously consider giving student loans, by doing so they would even regulate their expenditure.

  56. GETTING OFF TOPIC FOR A BIT BUT IT’S KIND OF IMPORTANT.

An estimated 25,000 Zimbabweans are heading for Zambia as they flee anti-immigrant violence in South Africa with thousands of others leaving for Mozambique and Botswana, the Red Cross said.

“In Zambia, our teams are expecting the arrival of 25,000 Zimbabweans, or 5,000 families,” Red Cross director for Southern Africa, Francoise Le Goff, told AFP on Monday.

“At least 5,500 Zimbabweans have had assistance to Mozambique,” she added, and 342 had been received in centres near the border with Botswana.

  57. Anti-immigrant violence has raged in South Africa over the last two weeks, leaving 50 dead and an estimated 35,000 displaced internally.

Authorities in Mozambique have said about 26,000 citizens have returned home since the violence began on May 11.

About three million Zimbabweans are believed to have fled an economic meltdown in their country to seek work in South Africa.

They and other foreigners are being blamed by locals in poor slum areas for unemployment and high crime.

  58. Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe said on Sunday that Zimbabweans fleeing the anti-immigrant violence could have land if they returned home.

“Our land is still there, even for youngsters, those who are in South Africa who wish to return to the country,” he said.

  59. it is a meal allowance NOT a salary unza.K300,000 one person with no bills to pay just ration is manageable but stop stoning innocent people’s cars.

  60. Levy tells MMD to ‘grab’ PF seats

PRESIDENT Levy Mwanawasa has told MMD members to take advantage of his reconciliation with Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata to ‘grab’ parliamentary and local government seats from PF.President Mwanawasa – who chaired a meeting in Mansa- said it was up to MMD members at every level to take advantage of the newly found friendship with the PF to recapture the seats, which were won by the PF and other opposition political parties.

  61. “The President said ‘take advantage of my reconciliation with Sata and the newly-found friendship with the PF to grab the seats from the PF;’ he said he had done his part and it was up to the membership to get back the seats we lost to the PF,” the sources said. “He said let us recapture our lost glory.”President Mwanawasa said there was need for the MMD to use the reconciliation as a vehicle to recruit more members from the PF and other opposition political parties.

  62. “He said we have to use this opportunity to strengthen our party. He encouraged us to open up to new members from other parties who want to join us,” the source said. Another source confirmed that President Mwanawasa said the MMD members in Luapula Province should take advantage of the PF to retain the seats, which were won by PF members of parliament in the 2006 elections.

  63. “The President said he had reconciled with Sata and it’s up to us to reconcile with PF members. He said we lost in Luapula and now that he had reconciled with Sata, it was high time the MMD members and PF members stopped fighting and quarrelling. He told us to take advantage of the PF to retain the seats we lost,” the source said.

  64. #21. Chitapankwa

Coppernet buildings suffered a fire a few days ago. It’s affected their services, and internet provision from them was out till last week.

  65. #4. You are deluded if you think there is no free Education in the world. Yeah I have paid council tax for 9 years but to be honest that is all I pay. I do not agree with these students rioting but if one is saying they have to work to supplement what ever the government pays them, I would love to know what sort jobs these boys and girls will be getting into. We know what goes on in our countries and we know what those bosses can do back home. I wouldn`t want my daughter going to a certain manager`s office at BP in Lusaka. No way.

  66. The writers that have touched my nerve are #7,8,10,16,25,33,36,52. True enough we have a problem but a way forward is to come up with implementable suggestions. If we team ourselves and work hard towards implementing some of the ideas brought up, we will make progress as a nation for the betterment of UNZA, CBU, etc. The core issue here is the meal allowance. That being the case, the Student Union must secure land for farming where students will be scheduled to work. Produce that will be realized from this venture can be sold to the Cafeteria and the public. This way students can at least have some form of balanced diet.

  67. By the way great one Mr President! We know there will always be money to pay MPs and those ministers for doing nothing. Makes me miss my country.

  68. Truth of the matter is that MMD is best positioned to make itself stronger whilst stabilizing our country. It has useful mileage out of this development to turn opponents into absolutely worthless noisy gongs on the grassroot. Zambia will do better if we drifted into the Botswana defacto type of politics. Opposition politics there is nothing but a hype of unelectable toothless sects in the rambling vocation.MMD has space and environment to systematically realize that type of democracy here. Botswana is a model, economically and politically on the move where as our duplicity political system has been nothing but Confucius since 1991.

  69. I remember as a student at Kafue Secondary School we had a Young Farmers Club. What we did was grow vegetables and raised chickens. These got sold to the school and members of staff. That was the only way we could raise money for other things that the club needed to be functional. Let’s start with simple solutions. As regards Aluminis, we certainly must have them established and see to it that they are functional as cited by #7 and others. It is good that we are exchanging ideas however, not many people are getting involved.

  70. Forget about those UNZA monks and mamaids entrenched in their so called intelligentsia wishful fantasy. If one cannot move with time, such is stuck with wishful thinking when the world is exponentially on the move. Some of us had the privilege on receiving scholarship in some Eastern Europe. We the fall of communism and the violence that befell that part, we were recalled for our safety. Worked and raised our own resources to soldier on around the Globe where peace and opportunities prevailed. independently sustained our education and returning home in masses while the monk is still stoning cars and yearning for Chibuku allowances from tax payers whose cars are senselessly stoned.

  71. It is interesting to note that HH has students under his sponsorship. Here is another suggestion regarding this one. People that care about what is being discussed must fundraise for a Wall of Fame to be erected on campus where we can have engravings of names of those individuals that are making a difference to the university and society at large. I believe that if something like this was done, other people will participate. If you think about it, we have a lot of people in Zambia with money that is just sitting idle in banks at home and abroad.

  72. UNIP generously gave out scholarships & exchange program opportunities. The transition into plutocrats’ capitalistic society has made many of us adapt to changed realities. Our university boards and students must start thinking and exploring ways for independent survival.I never went to UNZA but have three heartily buddies who did their undergraduate studies from UNZA though from very poor families. At most they supplemented themselves by buying some jeans from the then strong Zimbabwe for resell to fellow students.Eventually, Dubai stamps where everywhere in their passports. After Graduation they headed to USA’s UCLA,MIT & Ohio SU from where they hold PostGraduate Degrees and top notch jobs.

  73. There is education in the world I can name Russia ,switzerland ,Germany and Zambia.you chaps get ur facts straight

  74. Yes most Zambians are Glory seekers the suggested “Wall of Fame” would indeed do some pulling of support. But that by itself would not be enough. Our Universities and their students must get back to the drawing board and develop a blue print of self sustainability.Yest Government must give out Grants but not 100 percent handouts. Our Universities have turned into money Shredding outposts denying resources to needy cost centers in line with GRZ’ development plans. This nonsense must stop now.

  75. RECONCIATION 101. I sincerely agree with you that UNZA is supposed to be self sustaining by now considering there are intelligent minds in the field of engineering, agriculture, medicine, legal, education, economics and business. Think about it, if unplanned closures did not take place and if the quality of education is improved, people would not be sending their children outside the country for education. Also the institution would attract outside nationals to come and study at UNZA. This way the university can even be financially stable. For this to happen, unity must prevail.

  76. Let UNZA,CBU, etc managements open up employment centres at their respective institutions to attract all student-well-wishing companies to get in touch with them for advertisements of jobs, marketing products, parttime jobs and graduate recruitment.

These “centres” should then send emails about current and future prospects of jobs to all students on their list of those wishing to get parttime and permanent work.

This could reduce the burden of students having to walk through the streets of lusaka and other towns to look for some parttime jobs which may never be forth coming.

  77. Ya ndikonda ng’waddi eeyi:

    h t t p : / / www . postzambia . com / post-read_article . php ? articleId = 42080

Viva higher learning institutions meal allowance increment.

  78. You chaps, learn to be grateful and get what you are given!UNZA was under funded and money had to be found and immdeiately you want some more money!there are so many imporatant things and projects govt has, what you get is enough to supplement!get real chaps!

  79. I suggest that our GVT should pay allowances to those students who are really in need. Especially helpless students from villages and not LSK students. I believe Lsk students can find something to do to raise extra funds since it’s their home town. Give chance to those who really need help!

  80. # 92
Your suggestion is good but forget about it. This will not happen in Zambia. If you need to be schooled on this one, ask me privately. I will provide you with good reasons why children of the Lusaka elites will continue getting bursaries( some of which they Don’t deserve). Its the same children of the elite that you will find abroad (studying),not because they got scholarships on merit, but because they had the opportunity by birth. Those students abroad will get bursary of the sponsoring country, and the Zed govt will top up their allowances? The allowances they get are far more than Unza/cbu allowances, ask me why this will continue (privately), I’ll explain to u. Get me,LIfe is fun!

  81. #94. Please erabolate on this though I will assure you that I have learnt with some of the government officers’ children here – far away from home: Zambia. Some of them are children of rich lusakans and other people who are working for non-governmental organisations in Zambia.

They seem to be enjoying themselves very much. They even organise parties on fridays during the semesters. They get shocked when you do not join them in the said parties becuse they usually think that you are too busy with school issues.

I hope, someone will take my concerns on #92 very seriously. GRZ, see if you can support this proposal.

  82. chuchu is right, take care of the tax payer first and then look to the tax eater unza and cbu.

  83. Let these UNZA gays stop stoning our hard earned cars and concentrate on learning.A UNZA student long ago used to be respected not these KAPONYAs who enrol just to break peoples vehicles. The calibre of UNZA students has really gone down if in general someone can believe that sata can do something meaningful in this era, those students of old would distinguish between cheap politiking and facts..

  85. #86. Free education is not socialism. Be reminded that there’s an implied Social Contract between the Govt and the National. Ppl have to surrender some rights and the govt must provide some amenities to the people. Why do you think ppl pay taxes? Why do you think they have to obey the laws? The govt has deliver on its contract and probably is one. Why do you think the govt construct roads, build hospitals, hire police, protect borders, make laws? Nationals have to follow these laws even if they did not sign to them, they don’t go and protect borders becoz the govt has a army to do that. WHY? Becoz of the contract. Is education an amenity for the Nationals, probably that is a querry for Levy.

  86. Hichilema said Zambia had failed to improve the education system to compete with other countries at world level despite having gained independence 44 years ago…. “I thought visiting the students who were shot at by the police was more important than listening to music and eating cake at State House. So I went to visit the students at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH),” said…. the condition of Nasilele and Chisala, who were admitted to UTH last Friday is stable. The students have even been moved from the low cost ward to the high cost ward after Hichilema paid K2 million when he visited them on Sunday.
