Sugar shortage is artificial

Share

Zambia Sugar PLC the major producers of sugar says the current shortage of the commodity is artificial.

Corporate Affairs Director, Loveness Sievu said the sugar shortage is being caused by a cartel of traders hoarding the commodity.

Mr. Sievu told ZNBC business news that some elements in the trading chain are hoarding the commodity with a view to push prices up.

He said Zambia sugar is producing adequate stocks of the commodity.

Mr. Sievu however, warned those hoarding sugar for quick profits that they will lose out as the company will Friday start producing 10 million kilogrammes of sugar per week.

He said this would help to stabilize the shortage of sugar in the country.

Mr. Sievu said the country's normal sugar consumption stands at 150,000 metric tonnes per annum.

Two days ago, government described the current shortage of sugar and the increase the price of the commodity as unacceptable.

  1. Thats what we can hear from you “unacceptable”….but the case on ground still stands—SHORTAGE OF SUGAR IS REAL

  2. Stupid comment and he will get away with. Why wait until the situation gets wait to start producing 10 million kgs? How long has it taken for someone like him to say this? By the way it doesnt mean people in Kaputa will see the change right away any way. It will take another 4 weeks before they get 25kgs of the 10 million he has spoken about.

  3. Kunzuna mtenta ndevu…Sievu ikako nzelu, you’re not running ZESCO or ZNBC. We expect more from the private sector!

  4. ..and please, LT check your facts next time. It’s Lovemore!! not Loveness…nichani, reporter enzo ganiza gelo po lemba story??? i shouldn’t be correcting you all the way from Asia.

  5. In the 21st Cebtury, only countries in such civil stresses as wars would experience a shortage of such a basic commodity. whatever happened to fee trade! how did it happen that all other( even cheaper and of good quality) sugar from other countries does not make its way into the economy-e.g. Malawian. meanwhile passive citizens watch as the so-called fortified sugar is forced down their throats.btw, next will be fortified mealie meal….goodness me!

  6. what about those fellows found with sugar in makeni? why are the making unfortified sugar if there is shortage of sugar? i think there is some “untransparency” here, Zambia Sugar PLC should properly be probed.

  7. this is a surprising thing. if we want to make profit we must think of the people in hospitals first. because there are more than 5% of the patients at UTH suffering from low sugar and the little sugar that was being produced in the country helped them. i just hope we are not trying to kill people (just to satisfy our pockets) as far as i know Zambia is a Christian nation and please let us think and act like Christians.

  8. Abash neo-liberal tendancies of maximising profits in the spate of ZESCO failure to provide energy to the country. What a shame to ILOVO a typical multi national corporation without morales!!! Abash Zamsugar and Ahoi to competition especially indians plse come and give this monopoly a wiping ass race!! Shame on Chilanga cement who cant even satisfy the local market let alone the graetlakes region in turmoil!!!
