Wednesday Zambian Football Update

Herve Renard wants two friendly games for Zambia between now and September 5.

The Frenchman said he wanted one friendly next month before taking part in the Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup and another on August 30 during the Fifa August friendly match-date window ahead of Zambia’s September World/Africa Cup qualifying date against Togo in Chililabombwe.

“We plan one camp in August and we hope to have one friendly to prepare against Togo when we have one FIFA date to use,” Renard said.

“We will have another friendly to prepare for the Cosafa Cup and we are waiting for the date (of the game) because it will be difficult because it will not be on a Fifa date.”

And Renard said he would call-up fringe foreign-based players for next months Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup training camp ahead of the mini-tournament in South Africa.

The Frenchman said he would like to observe as many fringe foreign-based as possible who have not had the opportunity to future for Zambia in the past during the July training camp.

“Maybe we will include one or two young players, I have seen one player from Israel Justin Zulu,” Renard said.

Meanwhile, the Zambia under-20 coach Oswald Mutapa has dropped six players from the 27 in camp preparing for Sundays 2009 Africa Youth Championship 1st round, 1st leg qualifier against Mauritius to be played at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

The players were dropped today after the Under-20 teams 4-1 win over current Faz Premier League leaders Young Arrows in a training game at Nkoloma stadium played this morning.

The players are Innocent Mumba of Zesco United, Afrisports striker Ian Kafusha, Gift Sakuwaha of Chambishi and Hendrix Mumba from Shooting Stars.

Others are Roderick Siame from Konkola Blades and Nathan Chintu of Green Buffaloes.

The Under-20 team will on Thursday afternoon play City of Lusaka in another training game at Woodlands after which Mutapa is expected to name his final 18-man team for Sundays clash.

  1. I don’t think 2 friendly games are enough, we need at least 3 with good teams, the likes of Ghana, Chad, and one European team like Sweden, Switzerland, Dermark or any of the teams from Euro 08 cup. Everyone should treat the Togo game seriously, nothing should be left behind. But i can see the coach is working hard puting in alot of hours and sweat towards this game. Go Zed!

  2. I just feel bad for the new coach. He has a large crop of unpolished talent to work with and under pressure to perform wonders. They are not of the same quality as the Kalushas, Musondas, Chabalas, Kazikas, Jack Chandas, Chambeshis, Msiskas, Shindes, Makinkas, etc. The difference was that any of team members was a star and given any situation one of them could rise to the occasion. This is not the same now. We only have Katongo. Otherwise, we are just in the “hope land” as matters now stand. I will be the last person to cast a stone at the coach or at Kalusha.

  3. Good idea. Am sure those who were crying for fringe players to be included are happy now. The two matches, provided they are against strong opposition plus the cosafa games would be enough to tame togo!

  4. #3 Chamboli, i agree with you 100%. Our players we have are not in the qualities of the Melus, Chabalas, Chombas, Mwitwas, Kalusha, Nyerenda brothers, Malitoli brothers, Chansa, Kazika, etc, he has undeveloped no name players on his roster to work with. Besides that, who is his tech coach? He has alot of work to do with the team. We should all understand like #3 and know the quality of players we have. I HAVE RESPECT TO THE COACH.

  5. I agree with#3 and 5 but i wish to suggest an overhaul of our league system.I dont think a lot goes into developing our teams. The yesteryear players you have mentioned were dedicated and commited to their country. We hardly head of players that never responded to the national duties calls.Although money was part of the game i think their committment to wearing national colours superseded the financial aspect. These days players even boycott games due to late payments. But dont get me wrong i dont condone non payment of players but exposing the differences in the players and even FAZ at that time and now.

  6. Yeah I remember the League those days had players who never even went to the national team yet were very good.Players like Wade Mumba,James Mukuka,Peter Kalomo,Rueben Sakala,Arnold Mutonga, and all those good players who didnt have a place at national level but made the local league so competitive.
The skill level has definately dropped and yes we need help from the Coaches we have.

  7. Yes # 7, as I commented elsewhere, the current league is not as competitive as it was in the 1970s and 1980s. There was a mood of expectation by fans of each team, the players, the media, and the nation before any clash. Players competed vigorously for each position and the atmosphere at any league, cup, continental or national match was electrifying. Players once they lost their position “Ukumulya akafulo” was hard to win back and they played their lungs out to impress and earn a position. Having “B” teams, “Ba Second” provided the competition and much needed nursery to supply the A teams not forgetting Nursery teams that existed in many teams e.g. Nkana’s Ajax. In addition, Zambia

  8. ctd from 8, … Schools, Amateur Leagues e.g. Copperbelt Amateur League, District Leagues e.g. Kitwe and just local community teams e.g. Chamboli (Sanctary, Sports, Mwabonwa, etc) including Primary and Secondary Leagues all supplied new blood continuously. We also had “compound football” where we played “Chikanda,” tennis balls, “Wembly” or anything we could kick. This produced stars and with funding by ZCCM and other interested groups such as City Councils, ZAF, Zambian Army and other companies, Zambia was highly competitive. Unless, we remedy this too much expectation when there is very poor investment will be asking for too much. I have not even mentioned good infrastructure befitting

  9. ctd from #9, … modern football, Zambia is supposed to do the right thing to capture back our glory. There are no short cuts to success.

  10. #3 What did we win with the crop of players and soccer structure with the youth we had in place. Apart from East and Central Africa 1984, we have won nothing, with all the so called great players not even a trip to the` World Cup with the so called great Kalu.

Lets not pretend like we were this great team!! The mood of expectation is at its lowest becoz it is the same crap. It has been 44yrs of a mediocre teams. Even Angola and SA have gone to the world cup b 4 us!!

  11. #12 Mbushi I agree with u. Maybe we should make you National Coach with your father as assistant, I am sure we shall win AFCON2010 as well as the World Cup, then we can call you “Great Imbushi”

  12. # !3 Don’t take offense. I know the truth hurts. I never said I would make a better coach. My point is simply we keep talking about great past players who are just the same as the current. What they both have in commmon is coming up short.

Until we win Afcon or go to the world cup all Zambian teams are failures. Unless your in denail!!

To be honest we stink period!!

  13. Mbuzi, we are in a different age and with probably a much better soccer admin that understands the game and the need to win. Those guyz that have been mentioned were great and it was all part of the build up which led to the creation of that great team that perished in Gabon. we don’t know what could have happened but we know they could have made us proud considering what the makeshift squad did in 1994 at the AFCON in Tunisia. But yes today we can’t even come up with a strong second (B side squad) team earlier on a A team. But we need to build to that stage, it may not happen now but maybe in five or ten years. SO LET US SUPPORT THE COACHES AND THE ADMIN, give them a benefit of a doubt.

  14. Chamboli-wusakile, well said I was a product of exactly what you are saying, I remember when most of the guyz we played soccer with at school were already been scouted by big clubs from a very young age and developed in fine footballers. But today soccer is just business, the buying and selling of players just to make a quick buck. No one has the time and patience to identify and develop talent. Its a shame.

  15. Gud thinking Herve Zambia national soccer team needs friendly games before playing togo. I just hope FAZ will secure friendly games for the coach to assess the fringe foreign players.

  16. What is Great about the Team that perished off Gabon? Apart from the fact that they perished while on duty. There is nothing recorded as having been achieved.I know “mutasha abafwa”Let us just do with what we have.We have nothing in Zed football wise to brag about, I mean as a national team. Let us just support the Current Administration and the Coach maybe come 2020…

  17. We always laugh at Bafana, but they have won the Africa Cup, been to the world cup twice, within 14 year. Zed in 44 years, nothing.

  18. Mayuka to join FC Porto next week, GREAT NEWS Mwiinga u see how special Europe is. Kalaba, Mayuka, Katongo F. Katongo C., Chansa Isaac bonse ni euro. The more players we have in Europe the more easir to organise friendly games aganist some European teams

  19. We will never win anything cause we are crap and talk too much. Always referring to the past 44 years nothing achieved. Uku temwa uku lota

  20. #2 chad is not a good team, anyway we need to play teams ranked better than us. top 10 in africa and top 25 in the wrld for us to improve. but FAZ should help our coach. for Cosafa we need to use our local based players and few ” africa based professionals” if we prepare well and pick a good team we beat Togo and go through. Mbesuma should be called. i believe he just needs support and courage he has talent. instead of pipo wishing him bad, tellin him about how fat he is and chibuku drinking. get over that country man, when zambia wins we are all happy.

  21. the 93 crop of players might have played good soccer but did win any cup. the greatest zambian team is zambia 74 and zambia94. atleast the reached the finals. the rest were jst gabbage like wat we have now

  22. Stop insulting past players, we had good teams, only resources limited our performances, imagine if the late “Ucar” Chitalu and “master dribller” Chola to name a couple, played in Europe in those days like our West African counterparts, I’m sure Zambia would have been awesome. 1988 could have been our year in the Africa Cup, we were unbeatable at home in the 80’s but Gov decided raze the Great “DAG” Stadium, I don’t remember us being beaten there in a long time, Teams used to fear coming to DAG and INDI stadiums. In our case we will always wonder what heights we could have achieved, if we hosted the 1988 tournament or if the great crop of players had not perished in that crash in 93.

  23. Anonymous and Ba Lula, For how long have watched Zambian Soccer Live? If watch that advert for ” Are you protected, when Kalu scored the free kick against Senegal at Indipondo, you’ll see me.

  24. Guys I think we should learn to understrand that the style of managing soccer is changing every day and we can only have good results if our administrators and coaches manage to come up with updated ideas on the current style of play and management of footbal.Teams like bafana-bafana were able to win the AFCON and managed to go to the world cup because their football administrators were more updated and serrious.Otherwise we will always cry for our past national teams instead of moving forward.(Ubulimi bwakale tabutalalika mwana)

  25. my bro. iam a moving dictionary of zambian football. anything to do with zambian soccer i knw everything.

  26. One important aspect of football management is consistency both in the coaches and football players. In those glory days when it was hard for Zambia to lose at home, Zambia used to have a consistent team and even if changes were made in the coaching staff the team remained the same.Today every African cup of nations we have a new coach and new players who even confidently say we are playing the competition for exposure purposes.Since 1998,Zambia has always been sending green horns to the past editions of the AFCON but for how long are we gonna continue with this kind of mentality. From the look of things even the next edition of AFCON we will still be taking new players.

  27. What is with all the insults and belittling of people on this blog? Can’t we all agree to disagree? Please stay focused on soccer and its related activities.

  28. Although the Gabon disaster team never won anything apart from Africa cup what happened soon after was an effect of that.I have said before that it was a great team because we never used to struggle beating teams like Angola, Botswana,South Africa ETC ETC. Now Angola is ranked above us,we lost to Botswana a few months ago.Yes 1994 was a great team too because they were understudies of the perished team.Because there was no understudy to them we went down thereafter and am happy that we have started ascending again. At the time of Gabon disaster we had about 9 or 10 proffesionals in Safrica. After the disaster we had 3 or 2,now we have about 10 again.this is a sign of improvement not to mention

  29. those playing in Europe,Asia etc.As for the coach i dont want to say much about him because i dont know him well but i dont think hiring a second in command of another team is wise enough.I still am ready to give him the benefit of the doubt and support him all the way.Its not his faulty and neither is it players’

  30. #16, I remember my classmate late Edgar Mwanza who played for Mutondo stars and Zambia schools was in a class of his own and Mutondo would drop him at school from weekend games. Nkana would do the same for Jericho. Others like Ben Chiteule, Dominic Mutale etc were classic and all from schools. Even if someone would say they never won a major trophy, I must say their talent was far much superior. If European teams were as liberal as they are today, we could have had over two dozens of our players in Europe at that time. Not to sound pessimistic, all I would love to see is reintroduction of the competition we once had and I am sure even our current players will benefit from such

  31. Apologies correction for #35 i meant East and Central challenge cup NOT Africa cup.
Dedication and committment to wearing National colors should be paramount.Do we find it in all our present crop of players Even the difficult players like Kapambwe Mulenga were always never found wanting when called for national duties.I really miss them

  32. #11 Mbuzi, do recall that even if we did not win anything, we went to the olympics a number of times and did well each time, we came third at AFCON in Ghana and SA and we beat nearly every team that came to zed. After Gabon we were ranked in top 2o in the world. Holland, Spain, England, Portugal are all great futy nations. How many competitions have they won? In the past every team entered for club competions went to semis in Africa with power winning it and devils in the finals on a number of occasions. Now we go out in preliminary rounds. Isnt this enough evidence that we were better in the past? Lesotho,Swazi, SA, Malawi all lost by 5 or more goals, now we draw with or lose 2 them! Pliz!

  33. cont..
In the past our equals were Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Zaire, Ghana. Teams like Senegal, Mali, Togo, Angola, Tanzania etc never stood a chance. When Cosafa was formed we dominated it but now we cant even score against teams we used to beat by large magins! Our soccer has gone to the dogs.

  34. We should continue supporting our team. Things have now changed and small teams no longer exist. Hillary, where are you ? I’m also Hilary. I’m happy to see that there is another Hilary because we are not too many.

  35. Boss you are right and i like your stats.Take it or leave it Zambia was and is still a great futy nation. We will continue supporting because it is all we got. There is no other Zambia

  36. #11 have a positive mind.Zambia national team is our team, whatever bad or good things you may say about it.Before you condemn the past players take a look at this ‘how many countries have won major championship by hosting it?” players in this respect should be spared and take a look at the government infrustructure that it had put in place in the past years.we are on the right track now.both govt. and FAZ.

  37. I don’t find any joy in always making too much reference to yesterday’s glory. Too much of it, no matter how well said or quoted may not help. What may rather help is to realise and accept the fact that today’s football is far much different from yesterday’s.

Today, we have Computer simulations that will easily assimilate and expose your defense system once watched by your opponents. Akale kwali neya kukulika, inkule, nokubelamina!

It’s high time the literacy levels and exposure to ICT infrastructure were raised for our ‘student’ players. Language is another issue … that’s why ba pwila ngabaya!

  38. Iyo lelo you guys have remembered the fallen heroes of soccer in Zed. I will also mention mine: Dick Chama, Dickson Makwaza, The Nkole brothers(more especially Abraham Nkole), Willy Phiri, Simon Kaushi Kaodi, Moses Simwala, Brighton Sinyangwe, Edwin Mbanso, Patrick Phiri, Lewis Shambulo, Obby Kapita, Enock Kalepa (the only graduate on the team), Johnstone Katowando, Jericho Shinde, Kalizamani, Goal tender Ignacious Muswalo, Jones Chilengi, Mbesuma’s father – Kajiya, and others. Awe nomba naine chaleka nobukali mwe. These are the trailbrazers of Zambian Football are for sure they were dependable.

  39. And Jani Simulambo, Stone Chibwe, Bernard Chanda, Emmanuel Mwape, Gibby Mbasela, Simutowe, Ackim Musenge, etc! You need history to understand the present and plan for tomorrow.

  40. #43. I have a positve mind on Zambian soccer that is why I am on this site. We should be realistic about our national team and stop pretending it is this great team. We should stop changing coaches like Bambas and have some continuity which may finally bring cohension and chemistry to the team. Lets deal with what we have.

I disagree blaming resources as an excuse. Look at Togo what resources and infrastructure do they have . Yet they made the world cup.
We need to stop the trend of changing coaches all the time.

  41. #47. Ndi mwina Nkana as well. ie. Comms Kalenga, Simon Chande. Dominic ” kabulubulu” Mutale, Henry Kalimukwa, James Jengela, Rueben Sakala, Boniface Malitoli etc. This is really the past

  42. Michael Chabala, Mike Muke, Muselepete, Golden Kazika, Stone Nyirenda, Webster Chikabala, Benjamin ‘Tigana Boga’ Bwalya pa Gabitas stadium. IYO MWANDINI CHALEWAMA KU KALE.

  43. Inga abena Teddy Nyimbili, Konkola blades, Philemon Mulala, Benjamin Kapayi, Bayonet etc etc

  44. Kapampwe Mulenga, Melu, John Soko, Chabinga, Munaile, James Chitalu, John Kachofa, kalizamani, Borniface Banda, Katowando, Musenge, Mankinka, Johnstone Bwalya, Efo Chabala, Mugayiwa, Masuwa, Changwe, Chomba, Mwitwa, Esto Mulenga, Anderson “Sweto” Banda, Bajuva, Peter Chain, Francis Litana, Peter Ngole, “Oil-man”, Peter Chonga, Peter Kaumba, Patrick “Segulu” Chishimba, Peter Nyongani, Happy Sinfugwe, Wisdom Chansa, Winter Mumba, Numba Mwila, Happy Ponda, Ackson Simbala, John Lungu,James Phiri, Robert Watiakeni, Aggrey Chiangi, Newton Chibuye, Kachimoto, etc. This was the best of the best, Zambian soccer by then was the best to watch or listening to Radio 2 with Dennis Liwewe, Ponga Liwewe.

  45. #57 NOT Anderson Banda but, Clement ‘Soweto’ Banda who used to play for Warriors. Also Like #58 said its Borniface ‘Killer’ Chanda.

  46. #58 No it’s correct, Bornface Banda he was the goalkeeper for Kabwe Warriors in the 80’s to early 90’s bro. And there was also Bornface Chanda the young brother of the “Great”Jack Chanda. I know my Zambian Soccer man.

  47. its good for zambia that 3 players this year alone are have headed and are heading to europe. Felix katongo at rennes in january, Kalaba to sporting braga and mayuka to porto. Am sure the boys will make it and hopefully will be spotted my the bespectakled ferguson who seems to have fallen in love with the talent at portuguese clubs. Good luck to he boys.

  48. Any of you guys remember those boots used by Red Arrows and Green Buffalos called “FI KATONGO” Who use make them?

  49. Now you guys are hearding to the best leagues and on top of that the best teams in the world. Just a reminder, don’t pull a MBESUMA. Shine like the likes of Drogbas, Adebayos, Eseiens Kanus and many more African players. I know you will make it there, all you need is just score goals in any games.

  50. I wish we still had those portraits mumasamba (Lyons Tea). Wow, that really promoted football. I remember having Kabwe Warriors’ Peter M’hango’s picture in one of my folders back home. What about Zambani Sailota, crazy Pearson Mwanza, Green Buffaloes Goal tender Chomba, Mansa Batteries and Power Dynamoes Siame, Ronald Chinku, Yellowman-Eston Mulenga, Top scorer Kelvin Mutale and Linos Makwaza.

  51. Jones Zyambo, Zyambo, Zyambo, what a pass from Fanny Hangunyu! Red Arrows 9 Maseru United 0. What a match! We really miss the old times, even boys like D. Lota would have been great had he maintained himself well.

  52. 66 u are right. Mbesuma is very far better than mayuka, kola and even j mulenga in terms of skill and even at the goal.let the coarch call him 4cosafa games and u will prove me right. Let us not talk bad of him. Wait and see!

  53. It is a hard thing to compare players as they normally posses different attributes from one another.I dont know who was better between Chansa and makinka,Linekar and Shearer. You are sure to come up with all sorts of justification for your answer but you will never reach a conclusion. All that is required is to analyse which player is likely to perform better against which opponent ETC ETC.Mayuka is a good player so is Mbesuma but they are diffrent. Each one of them can perform better in some games

  54. 72 its simple. We are talking about performance, skill, experience and stamina on the pitch and the scoring abilit. Mbesuma even now plz he can bang goals 4 Renard at any level e.g cosafa,Afcon and world cup. Thanks.

  55. #73. If Mbesuma can still bang goals why is he clubless ? Three teams in three years and he was let go by each team and you still think he can produce!
Until he gets a team ,have some match practise and start scoring then start crying for him.
Unlike in England he had a chance to play with the other two teams. They both sent his ass packing.
Calling for Mbesuma right now is a joke! You must be in denial.
Alipwa until he proves us otherwise.

  56. Mwaiche imbushi, MEEEEEEEEEEEE, MEEEEEE, GO EAT SOME GRASS WEMBUSHI. Mbesuma is still a good player and a good boy to Zambia. So don’t make mbushi noise on this issue mwaiche. I like some of your comments. You anonymous, say your stupid name instead of hiding koswe wa muchika ukulu. I was your president and your fathers ba kolwe mumpanga, Mbushi and Anonymous.

  57. #75. Stop being childish and lets debate soccer. Nobody said Mbesuma is not a good player. The fact of the matter is he is not playing for a team to get the fitness and practise to be productive. I dont care if he joins Mindolo Rifles or Luanshya United. He needs to be playing.
What precedence are we going to set if we consider people out of traininig. We all want him back considering the blunt frontline we have.
You are the same people who will be blaming the coach if Mbesuma fails and stinks up Konkola na am bundu!!

  58. Guys compairing players’s ability is not easy at all.Why do you think Henry could score 40 goals for Arsenal but only 10 for Barcelona.Oweb scaored a lot for Liverpool and that was it.So we must also consider how the team plays and also the combinations.Look at the pairings of Hasslebank and Gudjohnson, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. These guys set new records in the premiership and they are still in the game but after the changes they cant be as good.As much as the players can be good you need planning of how to demolish the opponents but capitalising on their weaknesses etc etc

  59. I THINK THIS REFLECTS WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR NATIONAL TEAM. WHAT DO YOU THINK
    from today’s weekly post.

ZAMBIA Football Coaches Association (ZAFCA) general secretary Simataa Simataa has said failure by top teams to amass more than 30 points mid-way through the season was worrisome.

In an interview, Simataa said the prevailing points on the KCM/FAZ Super Division table were a clear manifestation of how weak the league had become.
“We are going on break but currently the top teams have 24 points and after playing the Week 14 games,” Simataa said.

“If the top teams win it means they will have 27 points, to me it means no team has survived relegation.

“And there is a cry for scor

  64. Mbesuma even if he is clubless, if he can perform, include him on the team. Angola went to the World Cup with 2 players who were clubless and really did good. It is not a new phenomena for one not to clubless. We have coaches being picked to coach the NBA, Soccer, and so on that are clubless and they perform good. This could be Mbesuma’s best chance to shine and put him back on the charts and market. If not, let the coach tell us that this guy is finished. Probably let him play for Kajiya’s Zambia Brewaries and train at Chifubu Sec. School. It not, let him join Chibuku Warriors in Kitwe.

  65. #88. You can not compare a clubless coach to a player. A coach does not have to be fit. He does have to run or shoot on goal which all takes practice to be successful. I repeat no one is disputing the fact that Mbesuma could be a plus , the chances of him being a liability are high. He already is a madumbo he would run out of gas in 10 minutes then what. If you have played casual soccer you will agree it is tiring.
If Mbseuma was really seriuos, by now we could have heard he is training with Roan United, But we havent.
It is to risky to bring him on board now. The coaches know!!

  66. Further more If you follow Nba you will always hear players say they need to get thier legs under them . Meaning they have to be fit to perform.

  67. #41Thanks Hillary for having shown up and welcome to this wonderful Zambian website where we interact with Zambians from different countries.I use Kampala because I am in Uganda currently doing doing a bachelors degree.I like your spirit and please lets support the mighty Chipolopolo(Zambia)till the job is accomplished.Remember as #41Hilary said nowadays there is no small team, meaning that we should not underestimate any team in football.

  68. #88, unfortunately you have not mentioned Ailton who I believe was heavier than Mbesuma but scored hat tricks for Schaulke nearly everytime he was on the pitch. The issue is not being madumbo, but being fit and personal endurance when in the game. In soccer we count goals not dribbles or ball juggling. If he can be on target more than twice, it will be fine for me and the rest of the nation. Zambia cannot score, and believe me, if Zambia does not win the group stage, ppl will ask for the coach’s head on their platters. If Mbesuma can be on target, I will go for it.

  69. #92, you have misapplied the term ma-dumbo on Mbesuma. This word, when you check in the English dictionary simply means “stupid” and does not come any close to mean being fat or obese. Thus, I do not want to believe you meant Mbesuma is a dumbo or stupid. All the same, I support your line of argument and believe Mbesuma can help us move out of the goal drought Zambia is currently facing.
