Govt threatens to disband the Lusaka Floods Task Force

Share

Government has threatened to disband the Lusaka Floods Task Force for allegedly abandoning works on drainages in some flood affected areas such as Kanyama Compound.

Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President Friday Malwa has since given the Lusaka Floods Task Force up to August 18, 2008 in which to finish works on the drainage system in some parts of Lusaka.

Mr. Malwa was speaking when he toured some parts of Kanyama compound which were adversely affected by floods.

He expressed disappointment that works on drainages had ground to a halt and wondered why the Lusaka Floods Task Force has abandoned the works despite government providing funding for the exercise.

Mr. Malwa said it is prudent for the Task Force to work tireless on the drainage system before the onset of the rain season.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) under his Office is disappointed that the Task Force has relaxed at a time when it should have stepped up efforts to work on the drainage system.

Mr. Malwa has further urged the Lusaka City Council to conduct a vigorous sensitization campaign in communities to educate residents on proper disposal of litter in a bid to avoid blockage of the drainage system.

Lusaka City Council Senior Engineer Andrew Zulu, who accompanied the minister on the inspection tour, was at pains to explain why works on drainages had stalled.

Mr. Zulu, however, assured Mr. Malwa that the local authority, working with other stakeholders, would step up its efforts.

And Kanyama Ward 11 Councillor Simon Sinyangwe emphasized the need to upgrade feeder roads in the area.
