Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) National Chairman, Michael Mabenga has reiterated that there is no leadership crisis in the party.
Mr. Mabenga said all the party organs have continued to work together and are praying for the quick recovery of President Mwanawasa.
The MMD National Chairman was speaking at the party secretariate during at a press briefing in Lusaka on Tuesday.
He said people spreading rumors that there is crisis in the MMD should scrap the notion as the party’s operations are normal.
“I want to agree with what the Vice President said in Livingstone yesterday. There is no crisis in MMD. If anything the party has become even stronger as we have united in praying for the quick recovery of our President,” Mr. Mabenga said.
And Mr Mabenga says NEC will soon hold meeting to discuss and resolve amicably the disputes between the National Secretary, Mr Katele Kalumba and Chairman for information and Publicity, Ben Tetamashima in order to avoid bickering in the party..
And Chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti has dismissed rumours that before his departure for Egypt, President Levy Mwanawasa left the instruments of power with defence minister George Mpombo.
Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Information Minister, says Vice President Rupiah Banda is fully in charge of all government functions.
He says Mr. Banda is receiving support from all line ministries in implementing various government programmes.
Mr. Mulongoti was speaking during a live National watch programme on ZNBC TV Monday night.
He assured the nation that cabinet will continue implementing various government programmes despite the Zambian leader’s absence.

I know that the man is really capable of winning the next elections given the fact that he was only around to campaign for the 2006 election and yet performed better nationally than some poor finishers who had been there from word go. HH performed better than Sata in Isoka, most of Eastern province, some parts of Central province and most rural parts of Lusaka province. He also performed better than Sata in North Western and Western Provinces. There were only two provinces were Sata had a presence without HH showing a good one and these are the Copperbelt and Luapula. No wonder the final tally of the results shows HH on top of Sata.

I was a supporter of UPND until Mazoka died and the UPND made it clear that what they needed was a Tonga for President and nothing else. This guy was still speaking in bemba and everyone else accomodates him. cant imagine a tonga man in a village in Kasama speaking tonga. It just does not happen. In short everyone must conform to bembas and if the ydont, tehn they are tribalist.. How many bembas speak other languages and what does it say about them?
#112, I also met one, I think, last year who had been staying in Monze for about 5 years who could not answer me back when I greeted him in Tonga. This incident happened when I was travelling from Livingstone to either Mazabuka or Lusaka somewhere just after Pemba when the man joined us having come from doing some business in rural Pemba area.
What shocked me is that that Bemba man made mention that he learnt at Monze Secondary school and his father and family, I think, had stayed in Monze for some time too.
Despite all this, he failed to respond to: Mwabuka buti. This forced me to speak to him in another language probably Bemba or English – but his English must have been tricky 4me.

#112, 113, One day I was trying to navigate myself in the interiors of Chibombo, were you find lenjes and tongas. It was a challenge to communicate since I know neither of the two languages. To my surprise I founda Bemba man, nicely settled in this area amidst the so called ‘tribalists’. That man saved my life that day. I just thank God the tongas and lenjes who allow everyone to settle in their areas. In my line of work, I’ve even met Bemba/Ngoni headmen in tongaland. So, who is tribalistic, tongas or bembas?????
I don’t understand people like #112 who is asking why bembas can’t speak other languages well, it all comes down to our history in the mining sector. When the Lozis sold the mines in copperbelt province while sitting in some village in kalabo back in 1890s to Cecil Rhodes and Co. and the mines began to be operational commercially, there was need for labour, for some reason a lot of northers got to CB early and began to work for the colonial gov’t and in the mines and as a result of that Bemba became the standard language to be used in CB and this have been like that since then. The bemba language grew and spread naturally because other Zambians who were working in the mines had to learn …

It is not like Lozi where some Lozis have tried to force other tribes living near them into speaking Lozi when they have there own languages, that is tribalism which has been planned. I need to understand what people mean when they say tongas are triablistic. As a tonga person, this generalisation is very painful. I do not consider myselt tribalistic at all and I have lived in multicultural contexts both inZambia and abroad. I am a law abiding citizen who pays my taxes. #123 I don’t know about Lozis since I am not one, but my point is, in Tonga land surely no one has forced that bemba man to speak tonga becasue he has been freely speaking bemba for over ten years and everyone accommodates him. In fact I married a tonga and my in laws accepted me with both hands and none complained that I was a chewe from Eastern. So all these tribal sentiments I don’t buy them. The Tongas are the most lingua – flexible people if I am to use that term for lack of a better one. There is no problem for them to tune to home service and speak in their beautiful tongue when they are together. Every one does that. The Bemba do that; the Nyanja speaking do that; why should it be a problem for Tongas please.

#125 It is not a crime to speak your own language anywhere in Zambia. If you want to use Tonga then that is fine, I know a lot of Zambians that speak their own language any where freely. Personally I have no problems with any tribe, I just understand how certain people are brought up and how the are taught to believe. The problem in Zambia is that people don’t travel a lot outside the urban areas. It is a good culture to learn about other people’s cultures and languages if you can. I find that it helps to harmonise things. I can speak all languages across Zambia and this skill have made me a lot of friends. Let us not be tribal.

I believe that HH, Sata and any politicians thinking of going into state house must address the online community even though we don’t make a difference in terms of voting. The key success of Obama has been how his campaign team has used the internet to campaign and raise campaign funds through the internet. It might be to early for us but politicians should be seen to be in touch with the times. Am kind of confused with the kind of comments coming from Anonymous. I dont know if its one person, but that aside, Anonymous #142, your idea is very brilliant and i love it. Thats the kind of ideas we need to have on the blog. You have my support on that one!
As for #140, I dont have much problem with HH. But my opinion is that if he has to make a mark, maybe what he needs now is to go to various provinces, recruit people in key positions in his party from each of these provinces and gain some confidence from lower class group. As it is now I think he is mostly in touch with the middle & upperclass more than the actual voters.
When people were busy jumping up and down for the lake A. Mazoka in 2001, I was considering women candidates like Gwendolene Koni (spelling) and Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika. Ultimately, I did not participate in voting for I saw no credible candidate then. I still have my 2001 voter’s card for those of you who want to see it to come to terms that I never voted for UPND and its leaders before in my life even if I am Tonga.
I was attacked by some of the non-Tongas who were agitating for ‘vote-wisely’ at UNZA who claimed I spoilled the Presidential Results. By the way, I also did not vote for M(r)s Nawakwi as Munali MP in that same election. I hope this time, I will implement the ‘vote-wisely’.
What concerns me most is the issue of morals. Some highly educated fellows are today in courts being persecuted for plunder. The man showed good qualities of leadership and high morals, but it appeared our then president did not have a soft spot for straight persons, (the case of LPM in 1994.) After demotion to Education Minister, FTJ seemed determined to discredit Miyanda such that even decisions that Chiluba made regarding UNZA became so unpopular, but they were all attributed to Miyanda.

#219 UPND has MPs in Central, Western and Northwestern (outside southern). If you talk UDA there is eastern province MPs including Chifumu Banda. The Bemba candidates in UPND/UDA lost to PF just like the tonga candidates in PF lost to UPND.

#231, HH’s getting of 1500 votes in Chinsali shows you that the UPND is organised country-wide. Hon. Sata’s 4 votes in Nangoma tells you that there is no PF representation at all in Nangoma. Therefore, the UPND is a national party while PF is a regional party (or is it tribal).
