I’ll not be Detracted, says the Vice President

Share

Vice President Rupiah Banda says he will not listen to detractors that aim at diverting his attention from the proper running of government.

Mr. Banda said some people’s comments did not mean well but aimed at diverting his attention from important issues and instead focus on issues that did not matter.

“I will not listen to detractors, I will keep my eyes on the ball,” he said.

In the recent past, the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy, (MMD) has been embroiled in wrangles based on succession issues.

He was speaking this morning when he addressed scores of MMD cadres and government officials who welcomed him at Livingstone International Airport.

Mr. Banda is in Livingstone to officiate at this year’s Lwiindi ceremony of the Toka Leya people in Chief Mukuni in Kazungula.

Meanwhile, Southern Province MMD Secretary, Emmanuel Siamweela has appealed to government to provide relief food to some parts of the province which were hit by food shortages due to floods and other adverse weather conditions that prevailed in the last rain season.

The unfriendly weather condition affected the crop yield in many parts of the country.

Mr. Siamweela appealed to Mr. Banda to act with a sense of urgency and distribute relief food to avert hunger induced deaths in the affected areas.

He further lamented about the soaring prices of mealie meal in the province.

Vice President’s entourage comprises Community Development Minister, Catherine Namugala, State House Minister Cecil Holmes, Finance Deputy Minister Jonas Shakafuswa and President’s Special Assistance for Press and Public Relations, John Musukuma.

  1. Well said RB,but please, tell us about LPM? When can we expect him in the pilot’s seat, seeing as you are trying very hard to fit into his huge shoes? Please RB, we are tired of “STABLE” can’t you take something else out of your bag and give us proper data? Twapapata ba RB, please.

  2. I missed you, #1. The whole point of RB opening his cake-hole is to sell his credentials as the next president of Zambia. The only thing this fossil has in his bag is a second republic mentality. Abash “STABLE” and his cronies.

  3. HEY LT, DID RB ONLY SAYS THAT HE WILL NOT BE DISTUCTED FROM HIS DUTIES OR THE REST WAS NOT IMPORTANT. WAT DID HE ANSWER TO ALL THOSE PROPOSES ABOUT HUNGER. LPM CAN ANSWER ALL ZAMBIANS QUESTIONS.

  4. Thanx RB tell these chancers that you are running the country well.Am also tired of this malicious propaganda being waged by the FP using this website ,thank God only a handful of Zeds read the rubbish found on this website as people are more concerned about their talk time in their mobile phones than pay a pin at internet cafe to read empty tins make noise.Bakabwala aneba.

  5. RB has tried his best however, too much money is being spent to prolong LPM’s life. Let them remove the machines and bring him home for burial….After burial, elections should be held so that we can choose a leader of our choice and not RB.

  6. We hate you Mr. Handsome and Miss Pretty…you fail to see the beauty in our ugliness (just joking)

Yes #5 you have a point there. The man seems engulfed by them LPM cronies.

We were listening to a discussion programme on BBC radio 2 last night. They were talking about China’s influence on Africa…they gave Zambia as one country China is contributing greatly interms of job creation, development, disease eradication and political stability. Is that the kind of effect people are feeling from China’s presence in Zed?

  7. Iwe No 7, Yazaza, it is about time we paid decent wages and afford our leaders becoming prey to some corrupt elements in society. These leaders are contract workers whose tenure depends on the life span of Parliament. The leaders need to be rewarded for the hard work of turning the country round after Chilubas misguided polcies of plunder. In Kenya Minister get about K 47 million per month.

The next step is gradually increase the salary of the civil service but only if improves its productivity and work ethic.

For a time, lets us have leaders who are not turned into beggars. Imagine a Minister taking home K 2 million.

  8. for how long this country going to run without president? how long the gov going to hide the real condition of the cabbege?

  9. #10…the so called decent wages haven’t stopped corruption in Kenya. I doubt if corruption in the government would be eradicated even if the ministers got paid ZMK50 million per month. We’ve sort of allowed the system to go unchallenged. What happens to the AG’s report?

  10. As vice President, does Rupiah have immunity from court action? Can he assent to bills passed in Parliament? We want to know because Zambia needs elections to fully secure the office of the President.

  11. The wages of government workers (& ministers) should depend on the country’s GDP. The government is the non-productive part of the economy and we shouldn’t sacrifice economic growth to fund lavish life styles of ministers.

  12. #9; The situation in Zambia is so desperate that even a $20,000 donation to a school or clinic will get one on TV. Yeah, the Chinese are doing their bit & always have since TAZARA. However, this could all have been avoided had we run our economy better.

  13. No 14, who told you that GRZ is not productive, who prepares budget and collects revenue. If no revenue is collected – do you know that public goods and services will be compromised.

Developing and implementing policies is productive. We received US $ 30 million from mKnsanshi alone becoz of policy work on the new Mines Legislation. Tne BOZ Governor says we havee US $ 1.3 billion in reserves. Who do you think is working behind the scenes.

In kenya corruption may not have gone down due to lack of political will , as for ZED – though it is not completely sorted out, Levy aggressiveness had made it clear that the law will sort youn out. Maybe ask Funjika, Musonda Richard Sakala etc.

  14. Iwe Sweet Zed No 18 – Ba Levy is recovering from a stroke, the same Percy Hospital where Arafat was taken. He is probably on a life support machine. The news that Maureen and the family are at the bedside are nonsence because ICU does not allow bedside relatives.

He may be brain dead, so they may be waiting for MMD to regroup and prepare Maureen to take over. RB has been held hostage the G 4 (Shikapwasha, Mulongoti, Chituwo, Mpombo). When I come back the plunder cases will go no where

  15. WHEN THE CAT IS AWAY THE MICE WILL INDULDE…

now folks, about this recent inflation bursting wage increment,

does anyone not read anything about it,

if Levy was fine or recovering surely his crew could have waited for the captain to come and implement it himself,

what would have been wrong with them holding on a couple weeks more,

their behaviour has given them away,Levy aint coming back at least as prez, nope

    this the end

  16. Distracted to do what? Why are Zambian politicians so vague in language and seem to have very bad communication skills, this is an embarrassment to the Nation.
This also goes to the so called updates on Mwanawasa which said, he is recovering well..what the heck is recovering well? tell us the inside details, is he off life support, is there movements in his extremities, is he talking etc

  17. No 14, who told you that GRZ is not productive, who prepares budget and collects revenue. If no revenue is collected – do you know that public goods and services will be compromised.

  18. How I wish I was at UNZA again. I could mobilize a DEMO against auto-pilot running of the nation. Forget wishful thinking that was 27 years ago. Is Parliament in session? There is agent need to evoke the constitution.

  19. Truth is RB Can’t run government, our bashi mpundu@75. All we getting is total sickness from the sick admirers. It’s time we let GOD’s will to be in charge. Enough is enough ZED should move on whilst our dear brother is recovering but let it not be @ S/House. Y don’t we learn from the experienced like the way isreal delt with Sharon. Twapapata piliiiize mwebasambila bushe kulembalemba fye?

  20. Who writes for RB? RB are you not seeing the poor functioning of MMD? The ministers are in a hurry to amass so much wealth while the president in hospital who seems to be a deterrant to their greedy ambitions.Lungwangwa give the university their monies so that it opens immediately. MMD ministers have insatiable appetite for money.I like SATA’s comment over the proposed salary increase for Cabinet ministers etc.

  21. can the vice president tell the nation who is distructing from enjoying the salary increaments. RB just keep your job for christ sake and stop provocking people. mind you the term you were given to stand in is over.
because of the zambian people that I love i would only request to think twice over you comments, we are not in your corrupt dealing you in with the MMD govt. forget.

  22. Let the Zambian constitution kick now! This black mail by Government leaders about the status of LPM in hospital being “stable” is not helping anyone at all! In fact, it’s beginning to cause divisions in the country now. Can’t anyone well minded see this?

Whether or not LPM is back from the hospital, he can’t be the President anymore. We need to move on but wish our former President a quick recovery.

This docility of Zambians is costing us a lot. It’s time we start looking for someone to emulate LPM’s well tried hard work.

    God bless Zambia

  23. With unimpeded space for the disillusioned blowing their lungs out in vanity, lets stay on course moving our treasured country forward.GRZ and all its engines are doing impecable work. Despite a few uncontrollable Global economic factors, we are on course to our blue print.Thumbs up to the Movers and shakers from His Honor VP Banda in the Executive, Justice Sakala- Judiciary, Mwanamwambwa-Legislature, General Chisuzi,Phiri & the fraternal-Defense and Security dockets, Evance Chibiliti-Treasury,Joshua Kanganja secretary to the Cabinet, Dr.Fungika-BOZ, Mwansa-ZRA and indeed all mature Zambians at all level of patriotism.

  24. Levy had a New Deal road map, cabinet has it’s own Get Rich Quickly Deal , which is short sighted. The core element of rogue deal is to accumulate as much wealth in the shortest time span. They have increase their salaries because they are unsecure. Cabinet is also on a mission to keep Levy on life support until 2011, but the Zambians patience is wearing out. Bye bye y’ all.

  25. IN Bemba they say ati, IMFULA PAKUYA EPO YONA {YONAULA} IFISABO.
Be careful with tax payers money as you reward yourselves. Your Loya wama loya wont be there to defend you. Chindi Chamana.

  26. With the prevalent unbridled ignorance on the day to day Government statutory instruments, cabinet motions and votes one cannot be a useful player to impacting public office. I see lazy bones with their usual traits of typical attention seeking deviance exhibiting unparallel ignorance over a vote that was moved as a motion in cabinet in 1996 and passed in 1997. Documents are there at cabinet office.

  27. LPM endorsed the motion but said until we move the public service emoluments then under negations in Livingstone which materialized into a positive agreement between ZCTU and the labor commission on behalf of GRZ. LPM in the minutes with cabinet office and his office endorsed that all executive offices get an across the board raise. They effected that raise in 2006 for civil servants and political losers cried fall that MMD was buying the civil servants.

  28. This Executive raise came up following a commission that visited many regional countries among them was Uganda and Kenya. In reality Kenya was found to be the highest paying country though poor. The salary Commission found that their MPs for example, the least is paid a staggering US $ 16,000.00 / month with their President gobbling above US $ 29,000.00/month.All Public Budget and Policy analysts looked at the viability of bumping up Executive pay and found it economically realistic. You cannot have a minister earning what Zambian leaders have been getting. That is a recipe for corruption.

  29. Deviants are deviants you can never appease them. Let’s ignore them with deafening silence whilst consolidating and moving the nation forward. Cheap is not always cheap. Lets pay our society well.

  30. Is RB in control of Armed force and the Special Branch, If yes, may some one tell us under which law, is he in control, Can He commission Officers and can he appoint and disappoint Commanders. Why is he not call Acting President, Was he really be conferred with the instrument of power to Act. These issues have to be clarified and give the masses a sense of security as we await the recovery of our President.

  31. Anonymous you seem nice are you married?
Do you want to chat in a private yahoo chat room, i need some company..

  32. Ladies and gentlemen lets not forget that RB is just another job seeker like all his compatriots in cabinet. They all lack commitment to national development. Petersen is right to call them “Anyandule”.

Listen to that song, you will agree with him.

  34. #36, you sound like an MP or a prospective. What is Kenya’s GDP? compare it to the Zambian one. You also tell about how much civil servants are getting there, state of hospitals, schools funding to important institutions like Universities etc. DONT JUST LOOK AT WHAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AND JUSTIFY YOUR SELFISHNESS. yOU JUSTIFY K40 Billion for Cabinet and keep quiet about K200,000 for a bag of fertilizer. And tommorrow you even start talking about food security. SHAME SHAME SHAME

And tommorrow you even start talking about food security. SHAME SHAME SHAME

  36. #36 you are not being realistic, definitely you are a beneficially, shame on you.ok! tell us how much public workers get in namibia, botswana and south africa, and look at the situation in zed.majority civil servants here get less than K300,000 housing, less than K2million a month salary, and you want to justify your ministers getting over K22million besides all sorts of allowances including free fuel?indeed shame on you!!zambia is for all zambians not just ministers or palamentarians.to be continued.

  37. RB is it lack of confidence why you have to justify the fact that you are in control? Comeon just rule the country man and forget about the detractors and do not even acknowledge that they exist.

  38. Running a country is similar to ruuning a business. You can not commit 80% of your profit to wages. This is what our ‘caring’ Govmt is trying to do. Commmit a big slice of ZRA monies to their pockets. And remember, part of national budget is donor funded. This may lead to some donors withholding their monies for fear of being mis-applied.

GRZ re-think again before you effect this ‘salary adjustments’. Mr Lupiya (Money) Banada show bold leader and that you are in control by stoping these selfish moves. If you fail, then we will know that you’re IN CONTROL of GRZ.

  39. I feel a profound desire that RB be allowed to manage the affairs of this Country with little or no detractions. The man is trying and he should be given an opportunity to Govern peacefully. Regarding salary adjustments, lets be fair to these people they also have families and huge responsibilities. Who does’nt need a payrise PLEASE??

  40. leave RB alone. He is steering the embattled ship very well. This will add to his CV in 2011.He is a gentleman. He needs everyone’s support. As for Levy,I can only wish him well.Come home levy I miss u.Come and see your true friends and your enemies.Come and see those who wish you dead.Come and shame the sons and daughters of Lucifer.Long live levy and the republic.Never again will Hyenas and Vultures rule this country. We refuse, period!

  41. guys in accounts, and maths fields help some of us to understand,(15% of X)+X=K25,000,000,:x=?
In other words last year’s 16% salary adjustments saw ministers getting around K8million,how can 15% pay rise, as they claim,of about 8M give us k25m?plz do some maths for me fellow bloggers.what percentage are we dealing with here? TBC

  42. On LPM, I think he’s time is up. Can I be guided on the constitutional provisions regarding such a complicated issue. The Country needs to move on.Docility seems to have set in for everyone in ZED. We need to be more serious than this. Granted LPM was the best President yet but he’s unwell and his family needs him more now than ever. Bwana Chief Justice kindly rise to the occassion.

  43. I think that in future we need to strengthen our Constitutional provisions to avoid such embarassing situations that leave us without a head. This Chongwe constitutional lawyer ***** was part and parcel of Legislaters in his time and he left FAKO!! You Roger ***** Chongwe just shut UP!!!

  44. #54, lets move along now on the LPM, constitutional obligation matters and support the GRZ efforts to maintain calm for the sake of your/my relatives on the ground.

Its not rocket science that our beloved LPM will not come back and take up the reigns of power. In the interest of keeping the new deal alive, the current govt and its head Hon RB need your support. Besides if the new deal stays on course i dont see no reason why we(in the diaspora) would be heading home with optimism.

  45. #56 I fully agree with you. The New deal under LPM brought us the Zambia we envisioned in 1991 before that miget took over GOD forbid ever again! We’re trully grateful to the almighty for coming to our rescue. Am certain that the good Lord has made special provisions for us in another LPM model and am optimistic that all will be ok.

  46. That’s good for you RB,but don’t you think that now that you believe you are at the “helm”,it’s time for you to sort out these bufoons from your own MMD,or you fear them hence speaking in riddles?.The late was open on issues,so if you want to fit in his shoes, tell us the truth about his body.

  47. Constitutional officers pay rise justified, Minister are not volunteers, they also requires a decent salary. Less than 15 m Kwacha salary is not to much. An average degree holder gets more 5m K unless he has self imposed deductions 1e Loans. A Govt Lawyer and Medical doctor gets more than 8M. In private companies people get as far much 10m-20m for Degree holders at starters level. How do we measure that Ministers get to much, What do we compare with. We can not compare a Minister salary with that a Nurse, Primary school teacher. Is it normal for the Minister of Justice to get less pay than a Junior lawyer in private practice, Health minister to get less money than Govt Doctor.

  48. Kachepa’s have it in Livingstone that some NEC members are on there way to Paris to see LPM who they say will be back in Zed on 18th August 2008. Well it is anybody’s guess that this is MMC Intiative to propel her ambitions for Plot 1. Indeed there is a leadership crisis in MMD. It is also a wonder why George Kunda has been silent for over 5 weeks, he’s the man whose supposed to interpret our straight forward statutes!

  49. #31,34,35,36&37.
If at all there is a daft person in zambia, you rank first. That is why i call you unpragmatic coz you paste comments that are totally parallel to the PRAGMATISTS. How can you justify the 22 million kwacha increment for about 26 people and yet there is lack of medicine or equipment at UTH, the countries referal hospital? Shame on you. You are indeed a shushushu who has lost the conscience of being a normal citizen. Surely do you need a magnifying glass to see the dirty happening in our cabinet? Fews days before they announce the incremements, UNZA dons were crying for govt to honor the 15% increment due to them but Lungwangwa and you denied them. By the way, salary or emolu

  50. contd from 62
are TAX money from the poor citizens who depend on good leaders to help them out but with your thinking, the devil is much better to stay with than you, a heartless cocroach.

  51. Pragmatic, you talk of Kenya, do you know that Kenyan parents are able to send their children to study outside kenya using their poekcts not stealing from govt. do you know that each kenyan, ugandan, ethopian or tanzanian student gets more than an equal at unza?
    shame on you

  52. Pragmatic, by the way you should have very good memory, do you remember that LPM before he got sick told the unza students that there is no money for increments. Lungwangwa echoed the same sentiments. Now if all of us draw from the same accountant, GRZ, how come millions are found for each yet about 8000 students need about 4.8 billion zmk

  53. iwee chi Mike #60 Be reasonal in thinking and analising national issues pls.the country is in a mess, check, our education, health etc systems very stuck.the majority zambians are in bad shape wealthywise.pls its really NOT fair.let us look for lasting sulotions to the poor status of our economy not by puting alot in fewer Ministers,MPS etc.

  54. CHE GUEVERA,

Just where the hell do you get information like #65 above? Kenya is broke and Uganda and Tanzania rank among the poorest in the world, and you claim they are paying their students more than Levy is paying you chaps, how? This can only be on borrowed money and no wonder their are no proper roads in Uganda we know where the money is going besides feeding Kaguta’s numerous spouces and war with Konie.

  55. #60, are you dreaming? calculate P.A.Y.E at 30% for a lecuturer at unza getting 6 million gross. dont include NAPSA just pay as you earn and then come back when you wake up.

  56. It is sad that most of ZRA revenue esp the Mine tax and loyalties are now going to a few politicians. These politicains must acknowdlege that we’re a poor nation. And when we have economic ‘boom’.. we all must share.

While no-one expect a UTH nurse or Doctor or UNZA lecturer to get more than a minister, monister gaps between Politiacians and GRZ workers are not welcome.

Politicians are there to serve the people and NOT to be rewarded with ‘huge’ Salaries. Any country you pick Salaries of Politicians are lower than most company top executives.

  57. RB IS DOING FINE. KATELE MAY JUST BE THE NEXT MMD LEADER. BUT SATA NEEDS TO RULE FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS BEFORE HE RETIRES.

  58. #68 Sansankuwa Kanyangu,Che Guevara is right and the info he has given is correct.Surely Countries in East Africa give more money to their Students, and by the way they have more Universities. There’re are more than 30,000 students at Makerere alone and each province in Uganda has a university and 2 in Kampala.I spent several years working in East Africa.Zambian politicians are blood suckers, they swim in riches at the expense of the poor tax payers. We need to rid ourselves of these heartless creatures we call MMD.

  59. What is rb talkin about?sata is right read post 2-08-08.tht money must b used 2 subsidise fuel+fertiliser.i hope MMD sympathizers will not vote 4 those plunders(MPs) in cabinet in 2011.vote wisely in 2011 What is rb talkin about?sata is right read post 2-08-08.tht money must b used 2 subsidise fuel+fertiliser.i hope MMD sympathizers will not vote 4 those plunders(MPs) in cabinet in 2011.vote wisely in 2011

  60. It was a 15% salary increase as they say, so as it is they were already getting a lot of money that they did not need the extra money for what? and guess what Tetamashimba is 100% behind this increase as expected. We will see if RB has balls to quash this which should justify why we should listen to him when he says he will not listen to detractors. What job do ministers do, speeches are written for them, policy papers are developed for them, i mean what do they do, I wish we had 3 Kapembwa Simbao’s in this cabinet.

  61. when is this site updated?please whoever is responsible give us something new tired of RB and LPM comments

  62. This is why Zambia will remain poor for a very long time. These huge salary increments can be used to build more Universities, reconstruct UTH and buy all equipments required. If you compare Zambia and other countries like Uganda, you will discover that the number of students that graduate are more compared to Zambia. This is becoz of the number of Universities that they have compared to 2Uni in Zambia. Two Uni cannot accomodate all the students that graduate from High Schools.

  63. We should not allow stupid politicians to destroy our economy for life therefore we have to be very wise when electing the new President. As for LPM, may his soul rest in peace. He tried his best

  64. Can someone tell the nation who exactly is in charge? This Govt has a way of overstretching people to a point where they can react. We should really think twice about voting these guys in power.
Just like the the ruling Labour party in Britain the MMD seems to be heading for a crisis if nothing is done about it.
#61 Who is being positioned for plot1?Is it Levy’s wife? aargh!

  65. #81 I agree with you on that as long as there remains 2 unis for the entire nation we will not progress.Where are all the learned people in the country? How on earth can a big nation have only 1 campus for medical students?

  66. #75 bo Mwiinga. You couldn’t have said it more subtly. K. Simbao is setting a very good example for professionals who consider going into politics. Down with the cadre oriented status-quo of running goverment. Appoint performing and deserving daughters and sons of Zambia if our country is to continue going forward.

  67. Thats right, he “will not listen to detractors” and “will keep my eyes on the ball” such as ensuring that he and other self-centered cabinet bootlickers secure themselves financially while the president is incapacitated. Hence the hefty pay increase for cabinet while people starve and struggle to make ends meat. Well said Mr. VP! We have no issues with you remaining focused and keeping your “eyes on the ball”. The issue we have is the “ball” you have set your sights on.

  71. The document cited highly paid chief executives such as the Bank of Zambia Governor who gets a basic salary of K108,500,000, the National Pension Scheme Authority chief executive officer who gets K50,000,000, Road Development Agency and Road Transport and Safety Agency chief executive officers who gets K20,000,000, the National Road Fund Agency and Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission chief executives who get K25,000,000, as well as the Rural Electrification Authority chief executive officer who gets K18,100,000. I feel they deserve the increase just so the honest few can not be dragged into the ncheke leko culture.

Please #91, 92 and 94 choose another pseudo name and do not drag me in your warped ways.
