Govt sets aside K8.1 bn for road rehab

Share

Government has set aside K80.1 billion for the rehabilitation of part of the Great East Road.

The road rehabilitation project would cover a 230 kilometer portion between the Lusaka International Airport turn-off and Luangwa Bridge.

RDA Head of Public Relations, Loyce Saili, told ZANIS that the project has been awarded to Reubex Contractors.

Ms Saili said works on the road have since commenced and are expected to be completed next year.

The works being done on the road include resurfacing and reinstatement of shoulders on the road.

She said the K8.1 billion is part of the K1.2 trillion allocated for road construction and rehabilitation in this year’s National budget.

And Mrs Saili said China Geo has been awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the Zimba-Livingstone Road in Southern Province.

The Zimba-Livingstone Road project would cost K100 million.

Ms Saili has since appealed to members of the public to desist from vandalizing the road infrastructure because government was spending colossal sums of money to improve the road network countrywide.

She noted that some people have engaged themselves in vandalizing road signs and culverts without regarding the significance of the infrastructure to the enhancement of the national road network.

  1. Not just the Great East Road but eventually and pretty soon all the roads in Zambia. It was appalling to see how bad the roads are in Zambia. When we will learn a lesson from what we see when we visit developed nations. How can the govt approve to build new homes in a certain location without first putting in place a good road system and even if they didn’t do that initially, nothing is done in the long run, so in the end we have all these places with beautiful homes but dusty roads, bumpy roads. Why, Why?

Hope that the K1.2 trillion will indeed yield results.

  2. papa RB, u are more active than Mbesuma. the way u jumped in celebration of a tradition ceremony made pass medicals as Levy successor. uposeko sana amano to those contractors repairing the road back to yo village. u are abt to go by tht road to yo home very soon.

  3. This is all bull crap! How about repairing the other section between Luangwa and Chipata? The road is turning into a feeder ‘street’. Then again, why not just set the money aside to cover LPM’s hospital bills. To be honest, one needs to make a serious enquiry inot the costs we are/will be incurring. Health care in the West, particularly Europe ain’t cheap (remember we are dealing with a VIP here). If I were one of the leaders, I would be thinking of opportunity costs in health and education. Well, I guess I better continue with my show!

  4. why are they fewer blog posts when we are talking developmental issues like roads and more blog posts on petty issues? i’ve always wondered what calibre of people log on to this site.

  5. # 2 nothing will come out of this project. check they have awarded the Chinese a contract china my foot. we had china hinan or china Hyena where are they? we are short sighted. this is another christmas carols from saili.

  6. Just you watch, the contractors will sign with K100million contracts with the government and spend K20million doing the road. The rest of the money will go towards the Mercedes Benz 600SL.

  7. We apprecite the idea.what is not normally there is the capacity to enforce the implementation process.we have seen several projects being started on a very promising and encouraging note but only to be disappointed at the end.can somebody educate me on the roles played by these provincial engineers al over the country.how do they approve these works being carried out in their areas only to be disapproved by the ministers or at times by mere citizens without any engineering skills.definitely i salute the idea.

  8. This is indeed very welcome news and RDA should be commended for the work they are doing. I would appreciate if GRZ through RDA can quickly work on the Kitwe chilonga road and make it a dual carriage way. This is one of the busiest roads in this country linking Solwezi(Lumwana & Kansanshi mines) not to mention KCM right in Chingola to the rest of the country. We have seen so many lives lost on this road and really government has to act sooner that letter. I know this is a very costly project be i believe the benefits will by far out weigh the costs.

  9. Spending K8.1billion out of K1.2trillion??? Where is the rest of the money going? Have I read this wrong?? Is the national budget K1.2trillion that includes schools, hospitals etc..and of that, K8.1billion is set aside for roads?? Or is the roads budget K1.2trillion? I bet you either way we won’t see K8.1billion worth of improvement. With that kind of money our raods should be like those in SA or USA! Labour in Zambia is cheap, road construction materials are relatively cheap (gravel, sand can all be sourced locally) bitumen will have to be imported though.

  10. I want to agree with the concept that even in a home, you dont release all the monies you have at goal simply because you want to have certain things.you release and then adopt an observation angle so you can see the positivity of where you have invested your money.just as much as we need the roads so urgently, some contractors need to be well traced before you give them a big project.this is done in order to avoid being stranded from all sides of investment.i hope that after this registered release, more time wont be spent before another sum is released.the more we release the better by the end of the day.cheers to you RDA.#13 HOPE YOU AGREE with me.

  11. This is good news. Hope more of our engineers will be envolved so that we retain part of our money and the technology from China.

  12. There is need for thorough planning on the road rehabilitation. If I may ask, has govt reserved the parts between Luangwa bridge and Katete to the Malawi govt to rehabilitate? Let us be serious. There many other roads in Eastern province requiring attention such as Chipata-Lundazi road; Lundazi-Chama Road, etc.

  13. Can someone from the construction industry help me understand why a stretch of 232km would cost K8.1 billion to repair whilst a stretch of about 71km cost K100 million?

Simple arithmetic would put the cost of airport turnoff to Luangwa bridge at around K330 million, K400 million at the most, considering that there are 3 70km lots in the 232km stretch.

Or is the first one a case of road construction and the other one that of pot-hole mending? LT please clarify on this one.

  14. You should also repair the road to Teka farms. We want those who are ‘stable to have a good last ride home’.

  15. I feel the money allocated to Monze-Niko road is not enough. It is high time that road is tarred for the first time in history. It is really disappointing to see the type of trenches/should we call them wells in the middle of road and plunks planted all over the road as a sign of a ditch/trench after 43 years of independence. I would like to appeal to the Hon Minister of Finance and National Planning and the RDA to consider tarring the Monze-Niko road for development’s sake for the ILA people. They have sacrified enough and they are incurring huge repair works on their vehicles due to the bad of the road. Please help us to tar the road and not just gravel because it will still be washe
