Govt warns salary increment protestors

Share

Political parties and some non-govenmental organisations intending to strike over a move to increase ministers’ salaries must ensure the protests are peaceful.

Information Minister, Mike Mulongoti, said although members of the public have a right to demonstrate, they should ensure their action is peaceful.

He said Zambians should also question organisers, what the motive for the protests is for.

Mr. Mulongoti said the civil society and political parties should use the right channels to air their grievances against government.

He said in an interview with ZNBC news that use of dialogue and the courts, to resolve problems is a better option.

The Chief Government Spokesperson was reacting to calls by civil society to start countrywide demonstrations over the planned salary increments for ministers and other constitutional office holders.

  1. Ata imwe. We can even talk when you do rubish. You know yourselves and I am just warning you. Al yo will have to explan your richness once I become Kateka. If you will be died your children will have to do the explaning.

  2. If the salaries they are having now is considered little let them resign. These ministers are crooks we are busy prayin for Levy they are busy stealing.Im sensing danger soon or later these ministers will regrate.

  3. I agree with #2 RESIGN, RESIGN PLEASE TWAPAPATA BA MINISTERS if what you get is little, there are many who would want to be in your shoes but well meaning zambians. Stop this madness while children are dying of preventable diseases. Zambian People HONKING CARS is a peaceful demonstration. Go Zambia Go.

  4. Mulongoti, how many years will your court system take to proove the Zambian people right over the same? 10?20? or wamuyayaya case meanwhile how fat will your pockets be with tax papers money. JUST RESIGN.

  5. Mulongoti and Mpombo we as Zambians would like to call for your resignationS from gvtcoz you have no vision and no interest in the country. These are not col. days where you think you can threat pipo and everyone obeys you like some little puppy. Time out for both of you. It is so sick to read the newspaper now becoz all you see is these two fully grown men with grand children(maybe) talking rubbish. Every time you open your mouth stinkly garbage comes out. IF YOU BOTH THINK YOU ARE GETTING SALARY INCREAMENTS YOU HAVE SOMETHING COMING and you do not know Zambians very well.AMA MINISTERS YOUR HOUR HAS COME!!! RESIGN Everytime I read about u my blood boils what type of pipo r u??? NO SHAME

  6. He said Zambians should also question organisers, what the motive for the protests is for- Mulongoti

I have tried to come up with a wrong motive for protesting against the salary increments for our ministers but to no avail. Every wrong reason for the protest seems reasonable enough under the circumstances.

  7. The aim of the protest is obvious;to deter politicians from turning the government into a kleptocracy;a government of thieves, for thieves and by thieves.

  8. Love ya Biggie Jim! How about protesting because servants are being paid more than their masters. Good enough wrong reason IMAO.

Honestly, how do these guys award themselves pay rises in the abcence of thier CEO. And they are in hurry to ratify it incase HE nullifies it when HE rocks up next time. Shame indeed!!

  9. The increments explains fully to us the condition of LPM. They are fully aware that when he comes back he will no longer be Kateka. When the cat is away the mouse….

  10. “Dr Katema disputes Chituwo’s report” This caption is the headline story of today’s post newspaper. I have not read the whole story but a Dr. Katema seems to suggest that the minister of health Dr. Chituwo is a liar. It has been generally agreed that from the time LPM suffered a severe stroke, the closest truthfull report we have received on our president’s illness was the one Chituwo delivered to parliament. Instinct tells me that there is a hidden agenda in trying to discredit Chituwo’s report especially when you take into consideration the fact that the defense minister is alarmed.

  11. Stupid Government. We shall protest. Prepare for hard times you crooks. We shall remove you after all you are just hanging. None will get those salaries. VIVA civil Servants, NGOS,all ANYANDULES and well meaning Political parties. Viva Student Power. Viva kale.Prepare for hard times hanging men who want to root the treasury. You will not get it over our dead dodies.

  12. Katema Mutale fuka. Are you trying to get a position in the government? Our uncle is no longer fit to lead any nation.

  13. who is doctor katema and why has it taken him long to dispute chituwo? whats with the public criticisms? this so unprofessional

  14. I wonder what would happen if by God’s Grace ? the president
woke up to find that these people who surrounded him did not mean well? How dare can you be making important decision on money matters withou his approval ? while other approvals have to wait for him ?
Please yembekezani Ng’anga ukupeze ? unless for sure you know something which you are not telling others about?

  15. It is time to open our eyes.To start with,we zambians just waffle and do not act.Let me asure you that now you are going to be in for it you ministers.
We will get you no matter what it takes and the riches that you have will go to the poor.Be aware of this chaps!!!!

  16. enough is enough, mulongoti and your group how many times are you going to chew our tax while we just stand and look? you are prolonging NCC debates so that you continue chewing from there, we wont let you increase your salaries unreasonably this time at the expense of hard working teachers, doctors and all grz workers. we shall protest.!!!!

  17. But ANYANDULE aba, they even have the guts to dare the public. These yorkels think we are dumb.
Bane, lets advocate for early elections for the country to be stable.

  18. Mulongoti comes of as the smartest chap in his own little imaginative village were those he rules upon dont have a sense of rational self. Where does he get off saying we should look at the motives of the protestors and pursue courts when the legal system aint independent???????????
    chani baba

  19. Viva PF-Viva civil society

Kale ici vive-Saturday, lets all be there.

Cowards and the lesser zambians-dont join us, we shall speak for you.

    Pa bwato!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. The whole episode of the confusion is because we do not have a clear Constitution which stipulates what happens in such circumstances hence the ruling party is panicking as they are not sure of what comes their way in case the CEO is not able to carry on with his duties. Let those at the NCC clearly stipulate what should be done in such circumstances in future. The Constitution should stand the test of time so that there is no finger pointing at each other in situations like these instead people can just easily refer to what the law says.

  21. who in da world is Ngoti dat people should be listerning to? ain’t got no pal by that name. He even got gats to justify his baseless points. What can a dialogue and compromised courts do in this state of emergency. something are worth fighting for. you absolutely nothing to deserve a pay rise and i jst can’t let my more than 35% i pay in form of tax go down yo ugly gullet without a blow. its not the motives of people inciting a demo, but about my interest, about the poor zambian, about the voiceless, about patients in hospitals dying from curable diseases due to lack of medicine. NGOTI, there’s only one zambia with the majority… i sense danger for u old folk, resign before its 2late.

  22. Mike is a very arrogant chap right!who even gives him the courage to scare millions of Zambians?doesn’t eh know that any time he can be thrown out of that position?Mike M,be careful mudala …

  23. This mulongoti is whack, daring us to protest as if what we will protest for is worthless, he doesnt know he may just incite violence coz people are going to be upset with his statements

  24. all affected zambia need to rise to the occation and defend our our only GOD given resources.MIKE NGOTI is not zambia to think he is everything.we need to be counted as shareholders of zambia.

  25. guys these *****s are trying to increase their salaries so that they get a huge gratuity since they know that in a few months we shall usher in a new govt. thats why they closed UNZA cos they knew that the students wouldnt have condoned such increaments and would be demonstrating by now. instead of looking into the plight of the unza lectureres and civil servants who get very low salaries these *****s want to part away with billions of kwachas, which they dont even work for. my fellow zambians let us for once be united and not allow such injustice to manifest.

  26. It seems UPND MPS are in support of the abnormal increment. What a shame!!! From my own analysis, these guys are targeting the mineral tax which otherwise would have gone a long way in the provision of better health and social services. How I wish we had al qeida to target such greedy people and their supporters. Rubbishhhh

  27. UPND MPs are set to walk out of parliament of parliament today to protest against the proposed salary increaments. UPND MPs-i salute you, thats the way we do it in politics.

You cant resolve everything on a round table more so when you have mulongotis, mpombos(Impalas),shakafuswas on the same table.

On sat we are having a viva-plz zambians join us

  28. Mulongoloshi is forgetting that Police officers are civil servants as well who have not been awarded that kind of pay rise so we may just work hand in hand naba kapokola and beat the hell out of these ministers. Dialogue in Zambia is a non starter maybe its time we started acting.

  29. That was a wrong move. Theirs was ill timed, ill motived, illegal, retrogressive, insane, unpalatable, immoral, barbaric, awful, hollow, shallow, stupid, move.

  30. evil, heartbreaking, ill mannered, unfeeling, selfish, criminal, outrageous, shameful, bad aaaaagh, aaagh, urgly,

    arrgggh, aghh,

    Im crying,

    arghh, aaaaagh,

    he he he

  31. Govt asks Parliament to backdate pay rise
By Chibaula Silwamba: Tuesday August 12, 2008

Government has asked Parliament to backdate salary increments and allowances for the Vice-President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, ministers and other members of parliament to January 1, 2008.

According to the Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (emoluments) amendment Bill, dated August 1, 2008 and signed by Solicitor General Dominic Sichinga, the Act shall be deemed to have come into operation at the beginning of this year.

“The object of this Bill is to amend the Ministerial and Parl

Parliamentary Offices (emoluments) Act so as to revise the salaries and allowances payable to the holders of the offices of Vice-President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Cabinet ministers, leader of the opposition, deputy ministers and private members of the National Assembly,” the bill read in part.

“This Act may be cited as the Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (emoluments) (amendment) Act, 2008 and shall be read as one with the Ministerial and Parliamentary offices (emoluments) Act, in this Act referred to as the Principal Act.

  33. MULONGOTI U AR ONE ANNOYING BASTERD IM TIRED OF READING ABOUT YO ASS EVERY DAY DAMM.. U THE ONLY MUNTU MAKING HEADLINES!!!!

  34. To every Zambvian out there take a minute trying to figure iut whats happening using the following questions????
1.Why havent we seen the pictures & videos of our leader up to now?
2.What crime does one commit for giving a democratic nation authentic information and proof of the presidents health?
    (including pictures of the president)
3.why would govt leaders award themselves the so called 15%increment at such a a time whem a leader is critically ill?Is he dead?Or are they not just trying to shift the nations attention from the current leadership vaccum knowing well that zambians forget easily?
4.Why all this Buzz about who is VEEP who takes over etc?
.Open your eyes for Doom Zambians

  35. Why do you trouble my father?

Why only him? and not Magande? or Mppombo?

As youths what are we doing for Zambia and not talking?

  36. I conquer with No.4 and 28. Iwe Kamulongoti you know how corrupt your govt is and then you are saying we take this case to court so that your fellow rubbish and corrupt judges will rule in your favour.
Ala Tawaishiba ukulanda wekabwa kabula umucila weeee!!!Nensoni tawakwata.
Lesa tecipuba Mwanawasa is coming not to work but mukumfwisha imwe ifipuba insoni.

  37. Ala mwe ma ministers na constitutinal workers mwalipena no wa milowele ali fwaa coz if he was around he/she was around, he/she could ve seen ifyabupuba mulecita nga na umfwako uluse. zooona muli mashilu.

  38. Iwe MP shangombo mubika mubika ,,,,you are also accepting salary increament iwe grade 12 truck driver…. pangunda pamobe tapaba natoilet panatukoma…. refuse those salaries…efyo wabutukila ukufuma ku senanga to chalala….we know what you deputy cabinet ministers do with our money “your money””tax payers”…..Just F..cking junior ladies in offices…shame

  39. Why are they in a hurry to raise salaries? We know we will have elections in next 6 mnths.Ka gratuity kabo ka kakula with this pay raise.Wake up Zed.Banyandule bala wisha icalo. My humble suggstion is lets grant the judges the pay raise but not the politician.Politicians will have to earn the pay raise in 6 mnths time if they win elections. The chief justice we all know will have a very difficult task in next 6weeks,the medical board. In this way he wont be compromised.

  40. We have every right to demonstrate in any way coz this is our money that we are talking about. This animal called Mike even has the g!!ts to inform the public that they should demonstrate peacefully.Bamabala imwe you want to deny us a good future!!!Our country is very poor and all you want is to take away the everything that we have… Basatana imwe…It is time we unite and act against selfish politicians who think about themselves and not cilivians.WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AND THIS WILL BE THE DECLINE OF OUR COUNTRY’S ECONOMY…

  41. The country is at a crossroad. People in GOVNT should not take people for granted. I agree with Obama NO 42 that a lot of questions need to be answered immediately if we are to move forward as a nation. All the senior civil servants starting from the Speaker, Ministers, Jugdes, H/Rights Commissiners, Service Commissioners etc are beneficiaries to this loot. People are required to respect the law but not when it has already been corrupted by the incentive. The constitution is very clear but when it is left in the hands of a few greedy people as the case is now, It becomes useless.

  42. All well meaning Zambians no matter how docile and forgetfull you may be as said by people with small brains like Mulongoti should stop the loot. Its the people against the corrupt leaders and GRZ and not small and geedy minds like RB and Mulongoti. We should pull them down. All Civil Servants like the Police, Prisons, Immigration will have to join hands. Who can Mulogoti and RB command when they were the first to urinate on the intelligence of the Zedns due to greed. The infomation is already on BBC and other Medias and the world is waiting for our action. Viva Zambia and Abash Corrupt leadership and threats. We shall deal with the situation. All hanging elements should prepare for the exit

  43. So Zambia has money to even pay these kapalas their new pays. At first i thought it was a joke. Now why can`t these guys sought out the UNZA priblem first b4 they look into their`s.

WE SHALL COME OUT IN BIG NUMBERS AND PROTEST.
AM CALLING ALL STUDENTS, CHURCHES, OR IN SHORT ALL ZAMBIANS TO RISE AND PROTECT OUR SMALL ECONOMY FROM KISSING THE DUST. BA PUSHI ABA TABAKWATA ULUSE.

  44. Iwe Mulongoti Jr., do you even have time discussing issues with your father? I bet you, he has no gats. There is no sense that comes out of his mouth. And why is it that your dad has now found time to go to school now? Where was he when there was free education, proper schools, etc, etc. He was just eating groundnuts in the village. If it were not for LPM handpicking him, your father would not be taking now.

Infact, he will fail at UNZA, jokes aside. The same lecturers who he doesnt want to their salaries are the ones who will make sure that he does not make it. Watch out!! It will soon be a time bomb exploding in his face.

  45. This Govt has no credibility at all! Zambians have the right to express their feelings and views freely. Its a peaceful demonstration and it should be allowed by all well meaningful member of society. Ministers live in luxury and they do not even pay for electricity and kumyabo amalight tayaya iyo. Now you want to reap the nation before you leave office. We know your time is up! LPM would not even have allowed this stupidness being exposed by you chaps. I wish I was in Zambia to join the demo. What do minister do anyway? All they do is dose in parliament kwati ni nkumba ifimbilwe. Please fellow Zambians demonstrate and do not be intimidated by these thieves!

  46. That’s the problem of having inexperienced policians. Real politicians like Kaunda and Chiluba would read the mood of the people and just give in. But these young chaps think they can fight tooth and nail at such a dangerous time in Z.

  47. #62 you are dead right. These guys are doing things in the absence of Ba Mwine like headless chickens running up and down with no direction. I strongly feel there is something they know about LPM but don’t want to revel to the Zambians. They are in panic mode and are just busy contradicting themselves. We are in for more surprises.

  48. The Post has been doing a good job. But somehow they appear to be flip flopping. They went to have an interview with Maureen to prop her ego instead of giving us the real state of LPM. They published pics of Maureen and not those of LPM. When Sata was taken ill the post was full of Sata’s pics on the stretcher (SP), being carried into the ambulance,… I mean it was a photo focus. Of course this was a good job. With LPM they fly a journalist all the way to Paris and only to give us what appeared to be a CV of the FL. I wonder what’s become of them. There opinions are always hitting hard on people offering available options, but they cant tell precisely their stand. Shame on these bullies

  49. please guys leave my dad alone. he is a kind and loving dad beleive me. its only that the position he hold makes him visible because he speaks on behalf of Government. otherwise the things he says are not his opinion but reflect Government’s collective position. i hope you understand and thanks for affording me this opportunity. am made to make this appeal because of the wrong impression being created about my dad.

  50. Demonstrations are worst of money and time. How can you allow deteriorating country go in riots? Your gvt spokesman Mufontini maybe right on this one, its better to sit and put wise words in those uncivilized ministers. Court issues are always expensive for nothing. I am sure those Bandits lawyers Nchito brothers are already busy buying Salaula suits to go and represent the government which is in a comma now.

  51. Way to go ? uwenso nifwa..it is high time …the people of zambia showed this greedy bustards who is really in charge? go civil minded organizations and individuals.

  52. Yeah.greedy and selfish. These guys should be good fish sellers after they live office cos all the overnight richies they have,
they will have to explain how and when they got them. Why not use the same 15% for developmental projects in Zambia.Sending their kids abroad for schools will never help mother Zambia.

  53. The protests should organised to run at the same time in Lusaka and C/belt. If possible also in every provincial centre around the country. Mulogonti will be s*#ting in his pants. Balemona kwati ni baguy sana….uku runninga ichalo chalishupa!!!

  54. Jr. have you forgotten what happened to Shakas, when he made that comment, and his son tried to protect him? Mukasebana Jr with your father.

If you claim your father is the spokesperson, does he know what it means to stand as an MP? Don’t forget he was just picked by LPM, and he is not even better than VJ. Right now VJ is even being invited to other foras to represent the country. But Mulongoti Sr is a let down.

When people rise against these plunderers, even the stuff hidden under the bins will be exposed. Wait and see. Let your dad go to UNZA and claim he is the spokesman, it will be Zwa!Zwa!Zwaaaa!!

  55. Mulongoti Jnr just shut up! its not in your position to comment on this issue the fact is that you stand to benefit from the alleged 15% the cabinet will get.you will be caught in cross fire. do you know what it means to have your salary increment put on hold for five months just to be told that 200 pin is too much for the unza worker as 15% increment… shut up please. let “the stakeholders discuss” viva demonstrations. all my cars will honk….

  56. Mulongoti Jr, shut up before you destroy the name for other innocent Mulongotis out there. One useless Mulongoti is enough!

  57. being a youth in Zambia is very stressed especially that our so called Ministers only think of themselves and their families.Mr Mulongoti is even comparing himself to Company executives!! What a Joke! Why should he even think of defending Cabinet for their Increaments which they even want to backdate to January!!Do they really know how much suffering people in our Country are? Please Ministers must know that one day they be im my shoes and their children will face the hardships we are.
Please be real and don’t try to gain wealth were u’have not laboured.

  58. #71-73,do not just make noise, pliz answer my Q? in #69 above. Ministers deserve the increament. 15% is not even enough. You outsiders you do not what ministers go through in executing their duties. You go to other countries, you will be shocked how huge ministers’ salaries are. I do not know why you compare a mere salary adjustment to plundering of national treasury. They are entitled to it and let them have it.

  59. Ze biggie we need the bucks to live decent lives. We have done a lot for you guys – imagine the strong kwacha, high mineral taxes and reduced poverty levels.

  60. #75 Zambians are outsiders over their money??? would your father mulongoti be an insider without the Tax payers money. How dare you try to compare Zambian ministers pay to those of developed nations. Hello!!!! we are not developed yet and would like to if your father and his cloonies would stop this looting of our money. Just shut up you are nosiating, like father like son.

  61. Is the pay rise asked by the Government Ministers genuine. What justification is there. They do nothing to deserve that.My advise to Hon. Mulongoti, is whoever is not happy with the conditions should quit,we have a lot of manpower that deliver.Big shame on you and your fellow Min.who are taking advantage of LPM’s illness.

  62. I don’t understand; what does this epitomy of stupidity Mulongoti mean when he says Zambians should question the motive for the protests? Anyway, with a memory of a peanut that he has, it’s justified for him to forget that the protesters are actually Zambians, and very patriotic ones for that matter. This culture we have embraced in Zambia of remaining docile even when things are going wrong will be our undoing. So, shut up Mulongoti and let us protest you greedy fool. Mukachimona ifikachitika kuli imwe ba mwankole, pretty soon. Remember that whatever goes up has to obey the law of gravity. What varies is just the velocity at which one plunges to the ground.

  63. How did it go?…….hope the voice of the voiceless was heard sraight up to their ears cos them are just guys who think they are game but ain´t.The hour will surely come soon!!!!!

  64. U chaps u just over reacting over the salary increments.Ministers deserve better perks, let them get the increament it will spill down to all workers in ZED.You guyz the Govt is shooting from the hip, just support the increament.

About Honking, #64 are u going to puff, and honk through ur ASS!Whose going to waste energy honky with cars.just use ur ass, guyz.

  65. #81, just like your name, you’re not making sense! And Jr, no one would complain if your Dad’s salary is increased by 15%. after all, all civil servants got the same rate. Now your greedy father also wants to increase his allowances by 50 – 100%, including mobile phone, fuel, housing, yet we all know you live in govt house, drive a govt car, probably even the motorolla that you use is GRZ, all paid for by tax payers..and your father gets tax free money…in reality, the actual increment come to 300 – 400% increment. Now where on earth do you get such increment? By the way, UTH doctors are on boycott. They are demanding an increase in their housing allowance which K570,000 before tax….

  66. News from Zed Doctors went on strike yesterday????? and so others are joining so Mulongti what you gonna do about?????? You are losing control over the masses? Control that you thought you had when you did not have? So young man what is yu daddy gonna do about it???

  67. PF HAS BEEN GIVEN PERMIT TO HOLD A RALLY TOMORROW IN KAMWALA. TODAY CIVIL SOCIETY PLEDGED NOT TO RELENT. MANY CALLERS TO RADIO PHOENIX WERE VERY ANGRY TODAY AND IT LOOKS LIKE THIS GOVERNMENT IS IN SELF DESTRUCT MODE. PEOPLE WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS OBSCENE INCREASES IN SALARY

  68. Peoples tempers are really hot judging by the phone-calls made to the radio station. The so-called govt better take heed, be humble and reverse their decision….without Levy they are just making their position unstable.

  69. Hey, guys
We really need to open our eyes about what the government is doing.
Why is it that these things are happening when the president is
    out?
I do not understand why you ministers should make such increments when
    students are having problems.
Leaders, you do not know how to prioritise. You are finding it difficult to see
important things.I want to let you know you leaders.
you need to develop Health. Then Education. These are things pending in our country.
How do you increase salaries for yourselves with such large sums of money.

Our leaders must concetrate on the vision of 2030.If not we shall be doomed.

  70. Fire the junior doctors. Let them use legal means to withdraw labour. Health is an essential service. Fire the lupens and lets get the cubans.

You can not blackmail the govt in power. If you are not happy with MMD then wait for elections and put in a party of your choice – ba ngwele

  71. Salary incremeny for ministers is way out of line. Our economy can not afford to pay out such large amounts of cash to onlu a few indivigals.Look at out communities today… they represent nothing but shame eg Our national roads are in deplorable state. so tell me, just for what are we going to pay you for?as at today.. teachers in most schools have to buy there own chalk.. dusteretc. nurses also buy there own uniforms shoes watch etc…patients in govet hospis.. no longer have unifroms like the ones we used to have during the Kaunda reign.
Imwe ba mumbwe (hynas)how can you justfy your proposed salary increments?
What works have you done so far apart from stealing from the poor zambians.
