The United Party for National Development (UPND)has announced its intention to participate in the presidential by-election and has floated Mr. Hakainde Hichilema as the presidential candidate.
UPND Spokesperson, Charles Kakoma said this in a press statement availed to ZANIS in Lusaka today. This follows the assurance issued by Justice Minister, George Kunda that there would be a presidential by-election within 90 days after the demise of President Levy Mwanawasa who died on Tuesday, 19th August, 2008 at Percy Military Hospital in Paris, after suffering a stroke in Egypt.
Mr. Kakoma called upon all UPND members, civil society organizations and all citizens to rally behind the party’s candidate, who he said offered a new ray of hope for real change.
He described Mr. Hakainde as an economic manager capable of bettering the lives of Zambians and called on all well-meaning Zambians to remain calm, peaceful, dignified and respectful during the period of mourning the late President Mwanawasa.

No ill will intended here. I have so much respect for our man HH. But I would be careful about pushing the credentials of an economic manager. The current British prime minister Brown’s popularity-ratings have fallen sharply as has the British economy (to a large extent)not becoz of being a bad economic manager but more about a lack of leadership and vision. The man was arguably one of the best men Britain has ever had in charge of the treasury, but is landing the British economy into trouble. i think a by-election months or even a year before a general election is a waste of money. why not let RB finish the term in an acting capacity and save money for the general elections later? i know it is a constitution requirement to have a by election any time an elective position falls vacant, but i dont think zambia has the money to finance a presidential by election and a general election months later.

HH is not wrong by announcing that he will stand. The national mourning will go on for three weeks leaving only slightly over a month to campaign. And besides HH had already launched his campaign for 2011 long before Mwanawasa was even ill. The govt has announced that there will be elections in the next 90 days even before the arrival of LPM’s body, on that ground what is wrong with UPND and HH to announce their candidature. Ladies and gentlemen lets be realistic, MMD has already started campaigning so even the parties should do the same. This is the time other political parties should start campaigning too or else they will lose terribly because 90 days is not even enough to sell their candidate.

The problem with people such as you number 2 is that tribe is the first thing you think about. You are small. Disagree with HH but do not say it is because he is Tonga. By the way, with certain tribes such as Tongas, if they are rich the chances are that in 3/4 of the cases, they made it legitimately. We cannot say the same of certain other tribes. Remember Kafupi, who learnt to tie a shoe lace after Dipak taught him how to – before Kafupi only wore jombos. After all these are state matters and we cannot afford to be overly sentimental. Did Kunda show insensitivity by saying there will be an election? Blally hell.

HH is misled to think he can pull it off. He’s clearly failed to fit late Andy’s shoes. His best bet would have been to compromise with a PF coalition that would have been the biggest threat to MMD. But as things stand, MMD can actually pull it off by annointing Magande, who would break into HH’s southern territory. Sakwiba disqualified himself at the convetion. First of all even if there were tribal sentments, Sakwiba was the acting president who among others decided the electrol college. Any UPND member qualified to stand and there was HH, Sikota and nchite. They were all given chance to sell themselves, and all Sakwiba could say was ” you people you know me iam the face you know, we slept in the trenches to sell our part so vote for someone you know” and there came HH on the stage he said what Zambian need and that’s how he won.Alot of people went to the convetion to vote for Sakwiba but he failed the test.

But I didn’t realize that some people of Zambia would use the tribe of a man to disrepute him. I think those attacking HH based solely on his tribe are worse than those KKKs and racists of the old days of Mississippi and Alabama. Just a difference in dialect should not divide Zambia, I believe we can do better than that, and please people – your comments here are enough to instigate divisions. Dipak started it yesterday talking about the election issues and we are told Chibombamilimo was complaining of the dark corner meetings which some MMD misters have been having concerning who takes over from Mwanawasa. For your own information, the statement from Kakoma is a response from the announcement that elections will be held within 90 days. There is nothing wrong for UPND to state what they will do. Others wanted an electoral pact being pushed by PF to give chance to Sata. Things don’t work that way.

There can never be unity between PF and UPND except for that of purpose. Sata is a dictator who is known for destroying other people’s political career. Look at what he did to Sikota, you want HH to also suffer the same fate? Even Saviour Chishimba mentioned it that Sata is an opportunist. He now knows that his health will not allow him to campaign effectively and he now wants to remove serious contenders by pushing for an electoral pact. Why cant he gloom those in his party? There are many people within PF including W Kabimba, G Lubinda and others Sata can gloom. He just want to use the 2 helicopters HH bought for his campaign and benefit from the campaigns HH has already made.
Sata wan relying on funding from Taiwan as a hired thug to target his attacks on China. Now that China and Taiwan have found there own way of solving there problems, Sata will not get money from those people anymore. It is very important to remain united at this point in time because we are mourning. What are all these undercurrents about tribalism. Lets stay focused to avoid hurting certain tribes, be it bemba, Lozi or whatever, the Hutus and the Thusi did not start any different from this.
It started as a result of one tribe thinking less of the other tribe, lets be wise and avoid such.
I have always been proud to be zambia for the simple fact that we are a peaceful nation.
