Vice President Rupiah Banda says the office of the Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ has a massive responsibility to conduct free and fair elections as per demand by the people of Zambia.
Mr. Banda, who is Acting President, said the people of Zambia cherish their freedom and would want to have free and fair elections.
He said this in Lusaka today when he swore in ECZ Chairperson Florence Mumba and Supreme Court Judge Marvin Sitwala Mwanamwambwa at government house.
Mr. Banda said as the country goes to the polls to choose a republican President in 30 days time, the responsibility of ECZ is huge.
“Soon we shall be going to elections and we are looking forward to your leadership. Our Late President knew what he was doing when he chose you,” said Mr. Banda.
The Vice President said Justice Mumba is well known in the judicial system where she has served for a long time at home and abroad.
And Mr. Banda said Justice Mwanamwambwa is a valuable addition to the judicial bench.
The Vice President who congratulated Justice Mwanamwambwa for his appointment said he attached great importance to the appointment of Justice Mwanamwambwa and encouraged him to work hard as he has done before.
“You too are well known in the judicial system. Your elevation is a clear demonstration of confidence that the Judiciary and the Late President has in you,” said Mr. Banda.
And speaking in an interview with Journalists, Justice Mumba said the task of ECZ Chairperson is a mammoth one.
She however said she was confident that the people of Zambia will be with her and give her the support to discharge her duties.
She thanked God for the appointment.

The last elections were transparent. I think the ECZ did a good job. I think they had a tough job but they did well. We even saw the opposition doing particularly well in urban areas. The levels of democracy in Zambia are a good example for other countries in the region to follow.

Elections 30 days from now; National Mourning still has 18 days to go; MMD still need to meet to adopt their candidate and campaigning for all parties has to begin straight away. Justice Mumba’s performance should not be under estimated, both in the national and international scene, having proved when she successfully completed her task in a UN Tribunal where she is well respected, served as vice president of the world tribunal (ICTY} in The Hague, Netherlands.Also as one of the appeals Judge In the Rwanda Tribunal in Arusha. Could one therefore underestimate a person of vast experience like that??? All she needs is our support and encouragement.

Not just the ECZ…the NCC too has a big task ahead of them. I dnt know if anyone asked, but what if LPM had stayed in a coma indefinately? Who would have taken the decision to call for a medical board, and after how long would they have been compelled to do so? These are some of the issues our constitution needs to address with severe scrutiny. All “what if’s” must be exhausted. I hope the next president does not discontinue this very important task left to us by bamudala LPM.

HH, Sata and RB (also may be Magande) are all potential prosidents for the next three years.
Personally I have no problem with any of them if they are not going to embark on unnecessary sweeping changes so that we like start new policies. It will be time consuming for us. We need a person who will largely continue with all good policies of Levy, just like he himself continued with all of FTJ’s good policies. We largely need to maintain the current path with minimum changes only. Those ‘fearing’ or persmistic abt any candidate should know that none of the three is capable of making any drastic changes esp if they are bad since the make up of Parliament/National assembly remains as it is.

Now talking about the potential Zed presido, I thing we need an economist to move us forward. Being out spoken like Sata is not one of the qualities of a presido. The saying “NO CHILD IS AN ISLAND” is true for Zambia as such we need a leader who will not cause trouble with our neighbours and the western countries. Looking at Sata, he has the traits of causing trouble and might declare war on one of our neighbours. The current Finance Minister has been instrumental is reviving the economy and he is my man.

I would suggest for all practical purposes for Zambia to go for someone who has the stamina to ‘push’ whatever it takes (even at a measured expense of diplomacy).
