The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) will not allow any of its members accused of corruption from contesting the presidential by-elections on the party ticket.
Defence Minister George Mpombo confirmed today that MMD had started the nomination process for candidates wanting to contest the presidential elections on behalf of the MMD and that the nominations would close on Tuesday..
National Executive Committed (NEC) would elect a candidate on September 5 instead of holding a national convention because there was little time to organise a convention.
“The MMD will ensure that people with political careers dented with corruption don’t contest because they will obviously be a liability to the party. We are alive to the immediate consequences of electing such people,” Mpombo said.
Mpombo said Mwanawasa’s legacy would have to be upheld by his successor.
“We are looking for a leader with the vision to reinvigorate the president’s policy on (sound) agriculture, to restore confidence to investors and somebody who will stand for national reconciliation. It should be somebody with a big vision on development and unity,” Mpombo added
Meanwhile, the Muslim Association of Chipata district has called on Zambians to elect a credible leader who can continue with the vision of achieving a stable economy in line with the late President Mwanawasa’s aspirations.
Association chairperson Salim Daya said Dr Mwanawasa had shown his dedication to improve economy of Zambia through the promotion of sound economic policies that encouraged foreign investors to handsomely invest into the country.
Mr. Daya told ZANIS in Chipata today that the improvement of road infrastructure in Eastern Province has enhanced agriculture in the area.
He pointed out that the province is now rated highly in agricultural production due to the good policies of government under the leadership of Dr. Mwanawasa.
“All this has been achieved due to the good leadership qualities portrayed by our late president who had the development of the country at heart,” he said.
Mr. Daya said there is need to elect a leader who has similar qualities to those of president Mwanawasa and pick up from where Dr. Mwanawasa left.
He has since urged Zambians to be cautious and elect a leader who will take the country forward.

This is going to be interesting because i see two camps within MMD i.e the “New Deal” consisting of the the Mpombos, Magandes,Chituwos,Shikapwashas,Mutatis,just to name a few versus the “True Blues” comprising of Katele,Mabenga etc.

MMD can try Felix Mutati, he has been at the centre of economic development of the country with Magande but it will be difficult for Magande because of Southern Province that may be divided. I don’t think Shikapwasha is corrupt, I don’t like the idea of accusing people who don’t have records of corruption. Katele, Mabenga and Mulyata, no one will urgue, the characters are corrupt but not Shikapwasha. Where does Mutati come from by the way?

One thing we should not forget that contributed to HH performing well in the 2006 was the alliance United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which comprises FDD, UPND and UNIP.UPND and PF standing alone can not match up the MMD.
Another thing we should not forget is that at the moment MMD is the only party that has structures at grassroot level through out the provinces in Zambia and so that makes it easy for them to campaign and get support.

The reason Gen. Shikapwasha was not made defense minister is because he is retired. Secondly, the late President wanted him for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs so that he could represent him at homeland diplomatic affairs and at times, foreign dignatrians. Thirdly, in 1998 when Shikapwasha was in SA almost dying and the doctors did not give him enough time to live, Former President Frederick Chiluba retired him and gave a lame reason to try and implicate him thinking he would die. Mr Mpombo is mentally sick. It is not him to decide, but the party constitution. If the constitution is silent, he should also do the same. So, ladies and gentlemen, expect bruising of each other. Mpombo may be disqualified on education basis. RB will have to start from the Branch level just as they had to tell Dr Chirwa. So, who remains to contest? Well, expect heavy politics such that Levy might have to rise again.

The defendants successfully argued to the judge that in order to defend themselves details of Zamtrop should be availed to them. The judge agreed and ordered the OP director to seek Mwanawasa’s consent in bringing the record, Mwanawasa agreed and the rest is history. LPM said he was shocked at the abuse and had no prior knowledge until the court case. If you want I can search the late’s speech to parliament.

NATIONAL Democratic Focus (NDF) president Ben Mwila yesterday said he will contest the forth-coming presidential by-election.
In an interview, Mwila said he rated his chances very high to win the election because all the political parties had equal opportunities of winning the presidency.
He said the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) were not political heavyweights.
Mwila said NDF had been re-organising and mobilising in the last two months.

However, your conclussion that HH’s failure to go through with PF pact means that he is greedy sounds to me to be too harsh a judgment on your part. I dont know about you, but i have found it very hard to trust Sata. Even the late LPM did not entrust him with the presidency and he was upset with that decission to the point that he left and started his own party, PF. My view is that if the pact was between Given Lubinda and HH, and then HH pulls out without reasonable reasons, i would then speculate on other reasons such as greed.

Out of the current MPs I think Magande is the only one that MMD can float. Unless they get someone from outside, (maybe someone like Madam Inonge Mbikusita Lewanika), otherwise I think they just have to go with Magande. Definitely it is too late to poach candidates from other parties.

How long shall the winner of the Presidential by-election rule? After 3 years we are going for a general election, of which that person would still be eligible to stand for a five-year term. Look at the rally they had just last weekend, Sata has a lot of support certainly in the Lusaka and CB areas. If he dies while in office then that is his destiny. However, on adopting Magande, I thought it might even work to their advantage because he is the only one who can grab enough votes from HH in Southern Province, and at the same time it would be easier to sell him in other provinces, especially considering that he has actually been the man at the centre of LPM’s economic policies. Otherwise chosing someone who cannot compete favourably with HH in Southern might even cost them more. I know this idea of capitalising on regions is not a very ideal one, but unfortunately, its reality at the moment for a any presidential hopeful!

My sense is the man is popular with the educated few (not being elitist), but may fall short with the majority without college degrees. It was obvious that there would be a bye Election using common sense. We were just praying that it does not happen and LPM get to retire. Don’t point a finger at Sata. My opinion is that Sata has the right to go for those processions but I dont think it was neccessary for him to start following the body. Firstly, Sata had the opportunity of viewing the body in Lusaka in a very dignified manner. Secondly, I dont see his role in these provincial trips because they are already officials who are accompanying the body, as well as those that will officiate in the various provinces.
Further, I still doubt if their reconcilliation with LPM was in good faith for both parties, and Maureen could be aware of this fact. Sata should have therefore known that his following around would trigger unnecessary witch hunting. There’s no need 4 him to start exchanging words
