There was confusion at Chipata Airport in Eastern province this morning when opposition Patriotic Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata, was ordered to leave the body viewing ceremony of the late President Levy Mwanawasa.
The visibly disturbed Mr. Sata was seen being escorted by security officers away from the ceremony shortly after the arrival of First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa.
Mr. Sata said in an interview as he was leaving the airport that Mrs. Mwanawasa did not assent to his presence and attendance of the ceremony.
He said the first lady asked him whether he was invited to the occasion when he went to greet her.
He said the first lady feared that he was politicizing the death of the President.
Mr. Sata said he was shocked with Mrs. Mwanawasa’s reaction especially that the ceremony was a sorrowful event where people did not need to be invited to attend the funeral.
“I am saddened with her behaviour because this is a state funeral and anyone can attend. I’m not politicizing the issue,” he said.
Mr. Sata stated that he was going to mourn the President and no one should stop him from doing so because Dr. Mwanawasa was a President for everyone.
The PF leader, who called ZNBC reporters to witness his departure, indicated that he would go to the next destination after Chipata.
But when asked which his next destination would be, Mr. Sata said it would not be of news if he revealed.
And asked what he would do next since his program had been cut short, Mr. Sata said he had completed his program, saying his plan was to receive the body of the President and leave after the guard of honour.
Mr. Sata arrived at the airport at 07:00 hours left at 10:45 this morning.
Meanwhile, Eastern Province Minister, Charles Shawa explained that Mr. Sata was sent off to avoid politicizing the funeral of Dr. Mwanawasa.
Mr. Shawa told ZANIS that Mr. Sata was given an opportunity to view the body in Lusaka yesterday and therefore, he did not need to go to all provincial headquarters to do what he could have done in Lusaka.
Earlier, Mr. Sata mingled with cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, and chiefs before he was sent off.
The private media must try to fight hero worshiping and idolizing of mortal men. The current view in some media houses is that because one man is exceedingly good, others are exceeding bad. Let us promote goodness in all men.
Unfortunately, since the leakage of ZIALE examinations and roumours about information in the hands of GRZ, some media houses can no longer be counted to perform this function.

This is simply unacceptable from Maureen. Sata as a private Zambian citizen can move wherever he wants even following the funeral procession. Can Maureen conduct herself in a manner deserving of a grieving first lady? whatever Sata’s motives those are his demons to deal with. The Late deserves a better send of than this phuckery.

I think this debate is getting a bit childish. The fact remains that punch-for-punch, Maureen has more authority over what happens to the funeral than Sata has. SHE is Mwanawasa’s widow. Sata’s actions of following the body all round the country certainly seem too suspicious. He may be trying to deliberately irritate people to make MMD and Maureen look bad because he knows exactly how they are going to react. I think Sata is overrating his popularity around the country. 1. We need to hold a Presidential By-Election in 90 days
2. The current deceased President is still PRESIDENT although he is dead. RB is acting for who? For a president who is incapacitated by death. LPM is still legally the commander in chief but decisions will be taken on his behalf by RB. That is the reason why his BODY is still a STATE PROPERTY right now. The Military must protect the dead body of the Commander until such order is withdrawn by RB.

As someone who dearly loves Zambia and Zambians(one of them arrested by heart!),I suggest that in future, a decentralized funeral ceremony (at Parliament) would , on balance, save a lot of (a) costs & dispel charges of seemingly disrepectful politicking. (b)A clear-visioned independent Funeral Committee would shield & save the bereaved familiies and politicians from one another.

I dont see the logic of Maureen having to stay at home but it is ok for ba Sata to follow the body willy nilly across the country. At first glance it may seem strange why Sata would want to follow the body around the country. But before you condemn him, other than Maureen, there are many people who will follow the procession through out like senior government and MMD officials. Are they wrong to do so? Obviously not. Because of their proximity to LPM and the senior positions they hold it is expected that they show their mourning of the President by being present through out the national procession.
