CEG advises PF to resolve internal wrangles

Share

The Center for Elections and Governance (CEG)  has urged the Patriotic Front (PF) to resolve the internal wrangles  so as to foster unity in the party.

CEG Trustee Gershom Musonda said PF should maintain unity as it is one of the major political parties which can offer an alternative government and help reduce poverty in the country.

Mr. Musonda noted that PF has also been consistent in providing checks and balances to the ruling MMD resulting in effective implementation of some projects initiated by the MMD under the leadership of the late President Mwanawasa

Mr. Musonda said this in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He said CEG it is concerned with the conflict within the party between its leader Michael Sata and some members of parliament who have been labeled as rebels for attending the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) .

Mr. Musonda said the MPs in question should instead reason with their leader in order to maintain party unity in view of the forth coming Presidential By-Elections.

He said the PF MPs should reciprocate and support the party they helped establish saying  supporters would not like to see a strong opposition party being weakened due to personal and internal differences.

Mr. Musonda has also urged the affected MPs to heed the call for reconciliation by PF spokesperson and Kabwata Member of Parliament Given Lubinda.

He also wondered why Mr. Sata and his MPs can not reconcile when the leader  had managed to reconcile with late  Dr Mwanawasa, a leader of another party.

  1. Tulekeni fye,whats yo problem.All we need now is change of Govt.Let MMD as wel resolve their problems how blind are you not to see them

  2. CEG is right.
    Otherwise if voted into power with all those in-fightings, they would just polute the whole nation with these rangles.
    You can’t just be talented at fighting everyday, that is not a good sign of governance.
    We need sober leaders; so if they want to become leaders it will be good in the interest of the nation for them so sober up.
    Life is not always about fighting, and you dont have to live a life of fighting everyone everywhere, honestly?
    Some people enjoy boxing, wrestling etc. so they support PF because they think leadeship is a game of fighting. Please we respect PF, but they are better off cleaning themseves before poluting the entire nation.

  3. In all honesty I think sata should for health reasons reconsider standing,we need to learn from our past experienes the presidential office can be very demanding…..the man has already has ill health.This might sound mean but state funerals cost tax payers! Banda is past retirement age too!

  4. Ba shetani! you are so blind you can’t see that you are sick.., Please spare us the sorrow of seeing you being evacuated to SA after you become bankrupt from your worthless campaigns for the presidence. Lusaka and Copperbelt your stronghold have gone HH! you are doomed.., its time for the young generration to rule.., you are going done! Watch the space.., HH we are behind you. Atleast you the only one representing the future..,Abash Satan and his zilots!! VIVA HH!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Give sata a chance, may be they should subject him him to a medical commitee coz none of the people talking about his ill health are medical doctors.

  6. SATA should extend a hand of reconcilliation to the so called ‘REBEL’ MPs just as he did with Levy and now with the Post. we need each other, one way or the other.

  7. CEG is inded ryt n ths 1,#3 advice,true,Mr sata and hs mp’s must wok n ths agently,evn th mp’s shud take the olive branch extendd to them,thy must knw wich party thy represnt and hu votd for them..they actualy must knw tht thy represent pipo wth those parliametary sits thy hold.

  8. I agree with you Amake B. These people from the past(UNIP and MMD under FTJ) should be allowed to rest. I also think this dictator of a man who can’t reason with his own people is not the right man for the position of president. He may be an action man but i don’t think he has the right educational back ground to run the affairs of the country. If anyone know anything about his educational background please post it.

  9. Why do the Zambians want to vote for RB? Please convince me otherwise I will not vote for him. What is the profile of RB? Zambia is going back 44 years again. Vote for HH period.

  10. HH the savior of southern AFRICA, UPND the dream come true, everybody vote HH. If America is witnessing Change with Barak Obama lets not get left behind, we all want CHANGE we can belive in …. SATA = John McCain and HH = Barak Obama. Tonga Bulls Stand up!

  11. if people cannot sort out small party problems, how can you entrust them with national issues? It is a lesson for parties to seriously look at the people joining them

  12. I agree with you # 12. RB may have a sound profile which i will post later but he is from the old school, we need new blood in Zambian politics. Vote HH.

  13. if people can not sort out small internal party problems, how can you entrust them with national issues were there is a diversity of issues

  14. HH IS INDEED YOUNG, BUT HE HAS TO WORK FOR OUR VOTE! THE GUY WANT TO GET THE PRESIDENCY ON A SILVER PLATE ,IN ANY CASE BEING BRIGHT AT SCHOOL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WISDOM GAINED OUT OF EXPERIENCE!

  15. Has anybody ever seen SATA’s profile? if so, post it on the blog. we want to have a look as well so that we can also understand what makes him suitable for the Highest position in the land. The man is nothing but a grade VII, who who can’t manage the economy of the country. VIVA HH

  16. #13 – Chengelo Alumni,
    When you liken HH to Barak Obama, i agree with you in terms of age.
    But when you say, “Tonga Bulls Stand up!” I totally disagree with you.
    Because, surely you dont need to put it that the driving reason to vote him should because he is TONGA; you think Zambia is Tonga.
    Even the people who wanted to vote him in will kick him out, because of your tribal sentiments.
    That is a very big flaw of attitude.
    I wonder what we can do to correct this TONGA attitude; it is very backward. Can someone look for a consultant to deal with this attitude, but please not KASUBA!

  17. We are looking forward to that day when a Bemba will stand as Member of Parliament in Choma and win by landslide,and also for that day when a Tonga will stand in Kasama and win by landslide victory.Is that not going to be pleasant,aini bane?

  18. Rupiah Bwezani Banda, or RB as he is affectionately known, was born in Gwanda, Zimbabwe on 19th February 1937. The son of Zambian migrant workers, Bwezani and Sarah Banda, RB spent his formative years in Zimbabwe.

    Having identified his potential at an early age, a prominent family, the Naiks took RB under their wing and sponsored his early education. The Naiks were prominent activists for majority rule in Zimbabwe and RB’s association with them piqued an interest in politics from an early age.

    For his secondary education RB qualified to attend Munali Secondary School, which was a hotbed of activism and RB joined many prominent Zambians in the liberation struggle.

    Having successfully c

  19. its true that if they can’t resolve their issues internally as a party, it puts some questions in the minds of the voters about how they will be able to run a country. after all a house with a shakey foundation can not stand for long.

  20. Political Life

    Whilst at Munali RB, like most of his compatriots, was drawn to the politics of liberation and he became a member of the Zambian African National Congress (ZANC) headed by the late Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula. However, like many other youths, RB became frustrated with ZANC’s more moderate approach, which they believed was prolonging the march toward independence. RB left ZANC and joined the Youth wing of Kenneth Kaunda’s United National Independence Party (UNIP).

    In 1960, whilst studying in Sweden, RB served as UNIP’s Representative to Northern Europe, a roving ambassadorial role which entailed fundraising and awareness raising etc. for UNIP’s cause. Through this role RB was

  21. Advice, I always end my blogs with Tonga Bulls stand up…. its up to u to percieve it the way you want… I am a Tonga Bull and i am proud of it….. #21 that will never happen, In Choma it will not ever happen, anything but a Bemba, and i said anything not anyone…

  22. Having attained his Bachelor’s degree, RB returned to Zambia, where he was immediately enrolled at the National Institute for Public Affairs (NIPA) for a course in Diplomacy and International Relations. RB was rewarded with a posting to Egypt, or the United Arab Republic as it was known then, as Ambassador.
    RB served in this role until 1967. Given the tensions between the Arab states and Israel, RB was able to gain immense experience in diplomacy and conflict resolution.

    Having acquitted himself with distinction in Egypt, RB was rewarded with a posting to Washington as Ambassador. Washington and London have traditionally been regarded as the most prominent Embassy.

  23. 1970 marked the birth of RB’s commercial career with his appointment as General Manager of the National Agricultural Marketing Board (NAMBOARD) a forerunner to today’s Food Reserve Agency.
    He later served as the GM for the Rural Development Corporation until 1974. In these roles RB was able to contribute to the development of agriculture in the country, a sector for which he is very passionate.

    In 1974 RB returned to the foreign service with a posting to serve as Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. Notably during this period he served as Chairman on the UN Council for Namibia, a body tasked to steer the South West African country towards liberation from the

  24. RB was quickly rewarded with a promotion to Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1975, a busy period which had him shuttling across the region to broker a peace in Angola and to enhance dialogue between the ‘frontline’ states and apartheid South Africa.

    A brief stint at foreign affairs was succeeded by a sabbatical to obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Development Studies followed by a period in private commerce.

    In 1978 RB won a resounding victory over Mainza Chona to become the UNIP Member of Parliament for Munali constituency. At the time Munali was by far the largest constituency in the country as it comprised of what are current day Munali and Lusaka Central constituencies combined.

  25. RB was defeated in the 1983 election, but recaptured his seat in 1988 by a resounding margin. He served as MP until early elections were called with the advent of multi-party politics in 1991, He was defeated by the late Ronald Penza.

    Other posts held by RB prior to 1991 include Senior District Governor for Lusaka Urban District and Minister of State for Mines.

    In 2000, disgruntled with the manner in which succession was being handled in UNIP, and after some soul searching RB bade farewell to the party he had served since he was a youth.

  26. If the MPs or Sata d not want to reconcile let them be. I have a problem with this attitude of toing party lines. Does it mean if you are an MP and you do not agree with your paty’s position you can’t spill it out? This is the reason why we have people who where principled but have become hopeless. Lets have and support a culture where we can all say NO to something we believe in.There is so much greed in our MPs who have thrown everything to the wind.

  27. Seems to be a good cv ba RB. But am a bit surprised that with all that experience in International Relations he has been very quiet on the Zim issue. Nevertheless better on paper than ba shikulu ba sata.

  28. Easy Pozy,

    thanks for that valued information.
    How i love to discuss with information on my fingure tips.
    It is such postings like yours that have continued to render the value this blog deserves

    Thanks!

  29. Zambia is at crossroads right now. We know where we want to go but are unsure by which route. RB is not the Moses we may want.But he is the best care taker choice we have right now to take us thru the next three years and complete LPMs programmes. Had he not been in the VP’s office everyone knows he would have stood no chance. No wonder I have to agree with the school of thought that its time we adopted the running mate mode of presidency.I know its hard for African leaders because they are suspicious of heirs and addicted to absolute power. For now lets assume LPM is with us and see his programmes thru. Contenders,you may be greatbut its just no time for expriments or opportunism.

  30. Sata is a man for my vote watever pipo might say or call him. We jst nid to understand and ready thru his past experience. I personally give him a thousand vots and a ‘plus’For his wisdom and love for this nation. coz he knows wats best for our country and the pipo there – we nid improved standards of living for this and generation to come and to hav ****ts at the end of the month from the so called investors of oranges and tommatoes. So together lets stand and support this Man. More money in our pockets and free education!!!

  31. This guy has seen no problem in PF so he wants people to think as if Pf has problems MMD is the one in problem and should there problems first then he can try and talk about PF.What Sata did is displinary action a party without displinary action is not a party one can vote for.Sata is merely showing you that it doesnt matter who you are if you are to be displine so you must.Otherwise not displining them is things that people are saying like for RB that his a weak person. SATA THE MAN FOR THE JOB.
    HIS EXECELLENCY PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA MICHEAL CHILUFYA SATA.

    Guys just accept the reality his getting into plot one dont make excuses.

  32. #30. Change Agent,
    I agree with you that we dont have to agree on everything, otherwise we cant make constructive progress in our endevour as we are all human beings who make mistakes.
    HOWEVER, I don’t agree with disagreeing permantly. I believe in resolving differences, and doing so honourably. Not where we shoult at one another to the shock of even primary school going children.
    And yet we want to lead the nation – eh, not wanting to resolve small issues in our own camp.
    The president says one thing, the vice says another, the spokesman tells yet his own line of thought.
    Surely as if we are at a black market selling charchoal, honestly, ah!

  33. Let us use our heads. This Man Njekwa is supporting is the same man who supported FTJ’s third term bid upto the point that FTJ anointed LPM. He organized thugs to prevent those who opposed FTJ from attending the convention, the man organized thug with machetes in chawama and it’s the same Sata who promised to forgive plunderers. I for one can never give a vote to a common thug. I would rather vote for a clean man HH where he wins or not.

  34. #20 thanx alot..im rili iritated by ths chengelo alumnui who seems to want to be tribalist,i mean y insist tht he is this and that.imagne if al of us dcide to indicate our tribe at th end..pipo lets be serious and change our atitude

  35. Easy Pozy – Very well written and best testimony as to why we should vote for RB. Are you able to find Mr.Sata and Mr.HH’s resumes as well? It would make for interesting reading and comparison.

  36. The one who wants Sata’s profile i will put it up here so you see it.But for now i will put a few things and very brief.He was once a policeman,Studied in U.K(self sponsorship not government) and in Russia.

  37. #25 Your sentiments are incomprehensible. It is scary that one can feel so strongly against unifying the two major tribes of our country. You have just gone to prove the point of why non Tongas are reluctant to support HH. We fear he may share your sentiments about other tribes. We all love our tribes and want to advance them over others. But the problems with a Tonga is that you will exhibit a superiority and unhidden arrogance to other tribes. In the process you antagonize others who would like to support you regardless of tribe. Being even just a bit subtle would not hurt but will go a long way in winning the favour of the rest of Zambia. Zambia is for all Zambians, not for Tonga or Bemba

  38. # 36 uzalila come november.we are watching you!you dont kno where the real majority is.by the way RB is known in all the villages-Disaster management etc.behold the day is coming!! # 36 uzalila come november.we are watching you!you dont kno where the real majority is.by the way RB is known in all the villages-Disaster management etc.behold the day is coming!!

  39. I would like to apologize to anybody who is offended by my Tonga Bulls Affiliation, but now you feel the pain i have felt while the country was piloted by lawless northerners specifically bembas, its not news to anyone that bembas are crafty foul mouthed people. Please know that since 1991 to the end of that short bastards end of tenure in office the only thing FTJ achieved was to topple KK. FTJ never improved/rehabilitated any of teh infrastructure. he auctioned off our country in the name of privatisation. kaundas nationalisation policies worked well for this country and his cronies were not thieves/crooks like the northern governemnet of Chilubas Republic,

  40. HH will never rule this country.I stay in garden compund, and here inflation is zali percent.all we know is that Sata has been fighting for us even when he lost erection.So you all people living abload dont tell us about this HH.If Sta dont win lupiah banda will win.To hello with this HH.

  41. Chengelo alumni please listen to peoples sentiments over tribalism. What makes you link Sata to McCain and HH to Obama. The last time i checked, McCain was a capilist and so is HH.

  42. #48. I was at chengelo as well but cant believe we went to the same sku considering the values that the sku teaches. By the way most of HH’s wealth was made from the same privatisation brought by the same FTJ you’re crucifying. We know you’re proud to be Tonga but dont alienate other tribes coz it’s not only Southern Province that votes. Remember that.

  43. #11 Easy Pozy.
    Reconsider your stance on education as regards leadership. Right now the Zambian government is being run by people with PhD’s, Master Degrees, and Bachelor Degrees. How much appreciative production has come out them? All I know is that they have been able to steal in abudance. What do you say about that comrade?

  44. Some people who want SATA they simply say they have made up their mind, they want sata.
    They are not saying why they want SATA; those who try to answer they simply say, “he is a man of action”, what type of action?
    If I give money to and send my son, JOHN, to go and buy a car for the family, and does a good and quick job in getting the car. Should the rest of kids start saying “Let us make John our father; he is a man of action”.
    And yet the boy does not even know how make money for tea leaves.
    Yes, the boy may may do work delegated by the father very well; that does not make him a father. let the boy remain a son, he is good being sent, not sending – please!

  45. dude i graduated from chengelo. i was there the time was richardson was headmaster and sims was his deputy. am sure ngulube is still there. did u even go for the 20th anniversary?

  46. #55. Intungulushi Mano,
    I think that some people wanted RB’s profile and in providing that information #11 included education as part of, and not the only content of that info.
    So in my view #11 was very balanced in providing the info. We need education background as part of our overal assessment of an individual. So I think this was very vital; the can only come if we make it the only issue to consider, which I think was not the case with #11. He made balanced approach, if at all you read all his postings.

  47. Chifuka, Mazyopa, mr and mrs fellows, Mr and mrs bently, mr and mrs hill, mr and mrs guest, Mr foster the list is endless we can all name teachers but you my fried did not graduate

  48. 57 # Advice. If we are to take your analogy a bit further. What if the father has several sons other than John and he gives all of them the same amount of money to buy the car for him. Only one of the sons shows the resourcefulness to buy him the best car at the most affordable of prices. When the father retires and the family has to choose one of the sons to take over the management of the families resources will it not be logical to choose the son who has proven himself to be most skillful applying the resources most efficiently in the past; the one who bought the family a good car at minimum cost? And please don’t accuse me of favoring Sata, just trying to take your argument a bit further

  49. I would have loved to go for the 20th anniversary but i was in Mazabuka and mapanza and monze busy on the campaign trail… im currently in Namwala and will be going through lochinver park on my way to pemba and Choma to campaign some more

  50. #147 nice data.
    I can safely write that the 2008 NOVEMBER elections this year will be interesting. In the USA, Obama (young and energetic) will be taking on McCain (Old and rigid). In Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema socially known as HH (young, about the age of Obama, brilliant and full of promise towards National economic independence) will be battling it out with Rupiah Banda (Old, about the age of McCain, and showing weakness by delaying to respond to issues).
    Hon. Sata will probably run out of energy as two months of working out his tired body will do him trouble and so he is not a contender at all in this election. Let us wait and see.

  51. MMD NEDS TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON THEY HAVE TAKEN ZAMBIAN FOR GRANTED FOR FAR TO LONG,THIS IS THE TIME TO ACT,IF WE HAVE 2 CHANGE GOVT FOR THE SEE OF CHANGE LET IT BE SO.RB HS NOTHING TO OFFER THIS COUNTRY EXCEPT RETARDTION

  52. dude there’s nine provinces in zambia. am sure u know that your messiah Hikainde cant win without support from the other provinces.

  53. #50, PLEASE, RECONSIDER REMOVING THE ‘NEVER’ IN YOUR ‘HH will never rule this country’ OTHERWISE PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A RUDE SHOCK OF YOUR LIFE.

    ….’UPND, the way forward’. We are in a hurry to develop Zambia to level of Europe and the USA. Someone sadi, ‘aim to get to the Stars (nearest star to us being the SUN) for in your efforts you might just land on the Moon.’

  54. Iwe Chiko i know that they are 9, but i only care about Tongaland… the rest will fall in place after they realise that HH is the only hope

  55. COUNTRYMEN AND WOMEN, HERE IS MY 2NGWEE ANALYSIS OF WHAT I THINK MIGHT HAPPENN GOING BY WHAT I’VE SEEN IN THE COUNTRY SIDE:
    PF MMD UPND
    NORTHERN PROVINCE = 65% 30% 5%
    SOUTHERN = 5% 15% 80%
    LUAPULA = 80% 19% 1%
    LUSAKA = 55% 15% 30%
    COPPERBELT = 60% 20% 20%
    EASTERN = 10% 60% 30%
    CENTRAL = 50% 35% 15%
    WESTERN = 5 % 50% 45%
    NORTHWESTERN = 10% 80% 10%
    TOTAL NATIONAL = 35% 33.4% 31.6%
    THIS ANALYSIS ASSUMES AN EQUAL NUMBER OF REGISTERED VOTERS IN

  56. I find it interesting that people continue to compare HH to Obama and Sata to McCain. The main similarity is their age. When it comes to policy matters they are quite different. HH has never held political office even at a low level such as ward councilor. It would be have been nice if he had a track record to show what he can do. His successful consultancy career is not necessarily indicative of his ability to articulate and implement national policy. I think it is just a matter of the lesser evil. Frankly speaking, none of the candidates inspire much confidence in me. I hope to be convinced by either HH or Sata by the time I get home in November.

  57. Pliz i appeal to other bloggers to void being tribalistic as if we r in the 19th century.Just debate real issues.Of course this old skinbag by the name of Sata we never be president!not in this life!

  58. EACH PROVINCE.IF WE TAKE INTO CONSIDERTAION THE FACT THAT SOME PROVINCES LIKE NORTHERN,LUSAKA,SOUTHERN AND CB ARE MORE POPULOUS,THE PF MAKES SOME GAINS.

  59. Following through #57, ‘ “he is a man of action”, what type of action?’, I would like someone to help me understand what action (since Hon. Sata is alleged to be a man of action) has he taken to amickably solve the problem he has with his 26 PF so-called rebel members of the PF? Since Hon. Sata has clearly failed to resolve this ’26 PF MPs’ impasse for a long time now and that he is vehemently against the NCC, what then shall he give us a Zambia in the next 2-3 years of his Plot 1 life if he ever gets there? Since Hon. Sata is against NCC, it follows that he will seek to do things the Mugabe (whom he has admired for a long time now) way – because even the name ‘PF’ is copied from ZANU-PF”.

  60. MMD winning Strategy Northen, Luapula and copperbelt goes to Sata, Southern goes to HH, Eastern, Western, North Western, central goes to MMD. Lusaka will be split between the three political parties. What gives MMD a strong chance of winning is that they will come in second in all those places they did not win.
    Sata Kuya bebele!!! Viva MMD.

  61. #63. MwenyaBC,

    If all the father needs is to manage available resources he will choose the one who managed the resources effectively.
    If the father’s concern is genearating resources he will look for one who can remain genearating resources for the family.
    But if the father’s concern is managing the general afairs of the family, he will choose one who has demonstrated laedership; one who will unit the kids promote each one of these children’s talent and skill in their various areas to betterment of the family as a whole.

  62. #72, thanks for the analysis but here is an alternative:
    PF MMD UPND
    NORTHERN PROVINCE = 30% 60% 10%
    SOUTHERN = 1% 10% 89%
    LUAPULA = 80% 19% 1%
    LUSAKA = 40% 15% 45%
    COPPERBELT = 60% 20% 20%
    EASTERN = 5% 60% 35%
    CENTRAL = 10% 35% 55%
    WESTERN = 5 % 30% 65%
    NORTHWESTERN = 10% 50% 40%
    Please do this one for yourself TOTAL NATIONAL not= 35% 33.4% 31.6%, but ultimately HH carries the Presidential mantle till 2011. Sorry but CP, SP and WP will this time help UPND get alot of VOTES.

  63. Just check the voting pattern of the 2006 Presidential Results. ‘Abena Copperbelt’, a gallant blogger on here, once put them up for everyone to see. All the best to the three Presidential candidates as they campaign. The race will be long. Some will be tired on the way and only the fittest will survive.

    On your marks, get set, GO …Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

  69. #Chengelo Alumni,

    That is good information.
    We need that information for decision making.
    We dont want to pick someone based on where they come from but based on what they can/or are likely to offer.

  70. I am glad that slowly the tonga Bulls are coming out, im adding these locations to my itinerary, so that we can tell them to also vote in large numbers this november. #88 i thank you for joining the cause to better Zambia

  71. Rupiah Banda is on Radio addressing the Nation, on end of the National Morning.
    Date for election has been set to thursday 30th of October 208

  72. Dnt mind number 25 (chengelo alumini). its typical of tonga’s thats why their HH wil always be a regional chairman..coz we cnt risk puttin a tonga. power wil always be for northerners and our tribal cousins the easteners.

  73. #87 Chiko; Adebayor will be playing. They’ve struck a deal – it’s confirmed. However these chaps seem disorganised. If we lose tomorrow’s game then we can as well give up football and concentrate on Ester and Galagata. All the best Zambia.

  74. I do not think there are any internal wrangles which PF need to resolve. It’s all up to the rebel PF MPs to reconcil with their party and its leadership. These few individual rebel PF MPs were just after allowances.

  75. Michael Chilufya Sata (born 1937) is a Zambian politician, the former chief executive of the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) and a close partner of former President Frederick Chiluba. As leader of the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), Sata, popularly known as “King Cobra”, emerged as the leading opposition presidential contender and rival to incumbent President Levy Mwanawasa in the 2006 presidential election, but was defeated by Mwanawasa according to official results.

    Early years
    He was born and brought up in Mpika, Northern Province. He worked as a police officer, railwayman and trades unionist before entering politics in 1963. He worked his way up through the rough-and-

  76. tumble rank-and-file of the former ruling United National Independence Party (UNIP) to the governorship of Lusaka in 1985. As Governor he made his mark as a man of action with a hands on approach. He cleaned up the streets, patched roadways and built bridges in the city. Afterward he became a Member of Parliament for Kabwata constituency in Lusaka. Though once close with then President Kenneth Kaunda, he became disillusioned by Kaunda’s dictatorial style and he left the UNIP to join the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) during the campaign for multi-party politics.

    After Frederick Chiluba defeated Kaunda in 1991, Sata became one of Zambia’s most instantly recognisable faces.

  77. Under the MMD, he served as minister for local government, labour and, briefly, health where, he boasts, his “reforms brought sanity to the health system”.

    In 1995, he was appointed minister without portfolio, the party’s national organising secretary during which his political style was described as “increasingly abrasive”.

    However, when Chiluba nominated Levy Mwanawasa as MMD candidate in 2001, Sata left the MMD and set up a new party, the Patriotic Front (PF). He contested the 2001 election but did not do well – his party only won one seat in parliament.

  78. #103 Chiko. The line up is a bit tricky for now. It seems our good and experienced coach has made alot of changes. But Mbesuma will be trying all his best upfront to regain his fading glory.

  79. Whats wrong with tongas. HH is bright but But fellow tongas are clading him in mad. Please remove the Tonga element in politics it resipe for serious tribal conflicts. we have one zambia and dont devide it along trible lines.

  80. Maestro at #80 & #82

    Some major flaws in your analysis:

    Luapula: MMD is likely to get 35-40% with PF 50-55% (the wizard of Chiengi is a major factor. )

    Northern: MMD likely to get 50-55% (see last elections + northerners firmly behind RB, whilst previously they were luke warm to the late LPM. RB closely linked to Bwalya Chiti…descendent of Chitimukulu,)

    Eastern: Take 15-20% off HH and give to RB…favourite son of the east, + UDA is no more, so FDD and most UNIP people will support RB.

    Western: West still have not forgiven HH for ‘snatching’ UPND from Saki…ULP supporting RB. RB supported by Aka, Nakatindi and Inonge (who he campaigned for at AU) West will give MMD 60-65

  81. Chengelo ala I work with someone who worked for HH ati the man is mean, ali bad treats employees kwati ni cheap labour like we are in Chaina, watch out Zambia. 30 October nipafupi..watch the marathon!! ba RB was supposed to be addressing the nation on state of the country. 84. We jus must win mailo..nt misin ot on AFCON in a neighbouring country.kwati niba S.Africa..shal watch n suport al th way.

  85. #13 you are tribal aligned, thats why you are not going to rule this country.In presidents we dont see tribes, we only see leadership.

  86. Chengelo Alumni
    Young man i dont think you are tonga you are here to tarnish there tribe. Though Tongas are stubborn, you have gone beyond that, which makes me think twice about why you are trying to portray yourself as tonga.

  87. Those of you who are supporting HH, i SUPPOSE you are Tonga,ZAMBIA is not all Tonga land ,you are just showing how tribalistic you are.
    Tongas plz stop this behaviour then we will help you.

  88. # 114 i run a company and if am not mean to the staff i can assure you that you wouldnt have benefited from its works. A good boss is surppose to be hard on the job. No jokes there. Workers steal to the bone at times.

  89. Awe,ths tribalism has bn goin on since mornin.pipo pliz lets js ignore al those hu tink a person cn be prezdo by wining 1 province.tribalism is js premitive..

  90. Let us ceasefire for now and support our Boys tomorrow.
    OK, A Tonga will never be a president, but who cares. no one here eats from the president’s house. only a few selected punks get to eat with the president and trust me, most are foreigners.. So Bola Ansi.
    Let us support our BOYS.

  91. HI People in the LT world.go for sata guys you wont regret,the unip guys are busy cleaning there throats.Lupiya has never impressed me with any concrete decision ever since he started acting as th president, abash mwanga.

  92. Chengelo don’t be cheated that politics are more like hearding a number of companies,as is the case with HH, leave business men to do their jobs and politicians to rule.

  93. Pachulu, It is Zamtel problem!!!. The lines are congested. if u want to get through call the landline after 2-6 tries u will get thriugh

  94. What DM means to say everyone is that we leave politics to the crooks from the North and that there is no room for the honest HH… DM this is a time for Change

  95. I am Tonga blood pure…. both parents… and i know you are not used to tongas speaking up but even we are tired of irresponsible leadership steming from the north… tribal lines aside we just dont want thieves in office anymore, and i will rally all tongas, a fight against corruption is a fight against the north…Bulls Stand up

  96. Sata had a Heart attack(Inferior Myocardial infarction) en like strokes heart attacks tend 2 reccur en with increased severity,I see this happening 2 Sata,he mighty not even last the campaign period,en U Chengelo ur sick,u make me feel very sad Sata had a Heart attack(Inferior Myocardial infarction) en like strokes heart attacks tend 2 reccur en with increased severity,I see this happening 2 Sata,he mighty not even last the campaign period,en U Chengelo ur sick,u make me feel very sad

  98. #50 Nalema, Please your flag betrays you!!!! Everyone knows that you are lying!!!! Can you check the flag under your posting and you will know that everyone knows that you are a liar.

  99. Ba chengelo mwalitumpa fye, stealing is not marked on a number of tribes, this is the reason why there is little to no development in your area. Ok if you feel so as a Tonga Leader you support your HH and we do suppot our national leader MC Sata period.

  100. Bane whats all this tribalism am reading. It does not really matter where our next president comes from all we need is the right person for the job. So please stop being tribalistic and analyse the candidates on merit and capabilities. Am sure you all can agree that we just want a better Zambia for ourselves, and our children. One Zambia One Nation.

  101. iwe #13 do not compare HH to OBAMA. Do u watch progmz on sky new or CNN, Obama in a man, he is moving around, he was in Afghanstan, listen to him wen he is talking. Now HH only known in Lusaka c/belt and where he comes from. Can one make a gud presdnt? Nevr been to Shangombo, shame. Sata is old and sometime I just wish the so calld HH was a fighter and brave like Michael Chilufya. HH is to smart for politics. Can’t sleep in insaka for that office but in hotels. Shame. GO SATA GO!!!!!!!!!!!

  102. Ok Mumu then i will compare Sata to Obama and we will start with looks and i think everyone agrees that Sata looks like he has been kicked in the face a couple of times. Micahel Sata-nyoko in ur own words…..ok u guys are pissing me off, i hope teh country keeps getting robbed until we arethe same like zimbabwe… BULLS STAND THE PHAACK UP

  103. Chengelo Alumin, Please ndakukomba tata utahubali pe!!! You are being very foolish, I wonder if you are even tonga. Let us discuss issue and not engage into tribal topics. I want to distance myself from the irresponsible statements being issued by this lunatic claiming to be tonga. I don’t think the character in the name of Chenelo Alumin is even tonga.

    On the other hand I 100% agree with the guys who are saying that we need to forward with HH. I feel that at this time and age, we need fresh blood and not only that we need economic managers who will help Zambia move forward economically because that is where our problem lies.

  104. see now this uncle tom tonga from copperbelt needs to shut up…. and has the decency to say i am not tonga, at least i refuse to be sodomized by bembas like ur stupid self. wazwa ku mapanza uya kumbo kumigodi watalika kuhubala… have i said anything about Lozis or other good indeginous zambians, its the northerners that should be prevented from ever holding office again. I have no problem with RB but have a problem with MMD… the issue is good governance?? do u see any of that in Kitwe back in the day Willie nsanda was UTTA chairman now he is an MP… what the phaack is going on

  105. Ba kamba ba Doc pa number 140,you should be saying sata was sick before, and not now. Naimwe you were sick don’t you remeber, Lets stop this politics of sickness instead of principal and manefesto dependant developments.

  106. Chengelo Alumini is not tonga. it is sad to have people who just want to work against other tribes to a level of impersonating a tonga. shame on you. We want to work with the people of zambia and not a region, period.

  107. stick to the issues, dont just disagree with my opinion, give yours… even when people hire employees they ask what tribe they are… best workers are not Northerners, i am tired of people who have been labeling UPND a party for Southerners, now that i give u a dose of your medicine you dont like it…. i will continue to campaign for HH…Tonga Bulls Stand up

  108. HH is not a clean man.1He sold our mines to stupid investors called infectors.2He came into politics through tribalism.Only stupid people can forget what happened when mazoka died.3The man has no experience.You can’t expect a business man to run a country from nowhere.mind u A company is not country.
    Look what happens in america,all presidential candidates are govorners or sanators.U can’t see a bussiness man who has never been in politics to run a country.But in zambia it happens eg HH.what can u expect from a man who has never been even a mayor or MP to run a country?let us no keep on trying to put people who have never been in politics.Sata has an experience and knows what is good 4 Zed

  109. Anyway, just to remind you guys, Obama will never rule America. So please don’t get excited. There are so many things that happen in this world, at times I fear for him. Anyway, that is the world we live in.

    But for now HH is the man for Zambia. I am happy that Lusaka and the copperbelt have now realised that Sata is a dictator who would only drive the country backwards. I was supprised when I read that he had now borrowed the words of HH of wanting to continue with the investment LPM has left. It was supprising because this was the man who condemned the Chinese investors but today he has changed tone. i wonder who Sata is, the man who is not stable.

  110. Ok gentlemen i think u have all heard what i said, U can choose HH or u can choose plunderers, either way its your life that is affected… most of the guys here are overseas anyaway and are living a good life… if you think to lead u need to be a thug then go ahead… Tonga Bulls lets boycot so that zambia can self destruct Again

  111. #156 Russia Moscow, So you are still around Comrade!! Good to see your post. Anyway, we may differ on our view but we are still Zambians. I for one supports HH becuase I feel that Sata has nothing to offer for Zambia. He was with KK and Chiluba the governments that failed. To begin with when KK took power Zambia was well economically and by the time he was leaving we were in bad shape economically. When Chiluba came into power things even went very bad with corruption taking an exponential curve and going to roofs. Sata was in all those governments. The moment Sata was kept away, Zambia started recording econmic growth under the leadership of LPM.

  112. #159 shani abena copperbelt!I agree with you but sata was not a president during kaunda and chiluba’s regime.can u see how mccain is doing against Obama?The man has been a sanator 4 27years but people still trust him.Sata has proved to each ministry he had worked before.HH is good man but to tell truth the man needs experience.

  113. #159
    You r rite some people are better in the opposition cos quit frankly he is better at opposing because though he talks and has no fixed position on issues it makes them work to shut him up. If he was head of state he would rule to entertain the poor so they have a smile on there face at the expense of meaningful development and also he would make sure the opposition know who is in power

  114. This site is very dirt can same one try cleaing it up. why such a situation were everyone speaks out all the foolish things out of there small minds without regards for the future

  115. #160 russia moscow, thanks man for the post. I agree with you somehow. It is true that Sata has his own strength and weaknesses and so is HH. The only thing we need to be careful as Zambians is that we do not put in power a person who will drive the economy of the country backwards. I really appreciate the fact that HH may need to grow politically but that has never been the case with Zambian politics. When KK came into power he had not served as MP or Councillor before, even Chiluba was the case. Levy was vice president only for a short time and left because of corruption in the MMD then. I don’t want to demean political experience but I want to think that even the likes of McCain…..

  116. CHENGELO ALUMNI, I must say, I’m very alarmed by your extreme tribalist views. I’m also very embarassed by the fact that we graduated from the same school. To see that you have thrown out the values of love and respect for others that were developed in us during our school days, is a shame. I think I know who u r! We all know whoever ends up at Plot 1 would need the approval of ALL Zambians, hence the need for all candidates to share their vision for Zambia (if they have any at all) with all Zambians. HH will never win an election based on the fact he’s Tonga. Never mate. HH may be a decent man but it’s FOOLS like you that are doing him no favours. ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION ONE LOVE!!

  117. ..and Obama have better CVs in terms of being well informed about the economy of their countries than Sata has for Zambia. I say so because, I see Sata change his stance time and again. Only last time he was condemning the chinese investment which today he supports because everyone else is supporting it. I feel that a good leader should have foresight to see things well before everyone else can see and I don’t think Sata was able to read that chinese investment would improve the Zambian economy until now. The story of experience even for Obama does not well for him. So much has been said regarding his experience with recent accusations that it confirmed his appointment of the running mate.

  118. Yes the way forward is HH. Lusaka province will decisive in who wins the election if HH wins comes second in Lusaka I have no doubt he will win the election because as things stand now he has central, north western western and southern in his pocket. So if he does well in Lusaka he will be the next commander in chief. It is also good for the future of our country because all over the world young learders are comimg up

  119. Cheng Alumni…I’m merely emphasising a simple fact that you don’t seem to get – “HH will never win an election based on the fact he’s Tonga.” As for your latter comment, I won’t stoop that low to try and prove to you that I graduated. It’s immature. We all expect better from people on this forum.

    ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION ONE LOVE!!!

  120. Infact Sata is on record of having said that if Zambia is not ruled by a bemba, then it is as well as being in the hands of dogs. He boated so much about how Chiluba had put the northerners in strategics ministries such as Finance when there was Penza, Nawakwi and then Katele, Defence where there was BY, and the Chitalu Sampa, and Home affairs where there was Peter machungwa. Sata was literally being tribal and proud of it. He again reiterated the same sentiments when he likened the rule of LPM to that of dogs when he was campaigning in Luapula province where he blackmailed those people that if Chiluba died his blood would be on their hands because they could vote for Sata and serve Chiluba

  121. I wonder why people want to label HH as being tribal instead of just saying that some of the people who once supported him are tribal. The likes of Ng’ande Mwanajiti who has since moved away from UPND and is now with Sakwiba Sikota. Anyway, in life I have learnt one lesson that those who cry the loudest and condemn others of being tribal are the worst tribalists themselves. I hope Zambia will not deprives herself of good leadership because of tribalism.

  122. While the rest of the world is seeking new methods and ideas of facing todays problems, we zedians still go back to old methods that we have tried,tested and proberbly found ineffective.if the current old zedians have had their time( old aged Rb,Doctorate in witchcrat katele,Phd liar vernon,Molongoti overzealouness diploma,over smoked sata etc)why not let young blood take over the yoke.like a father starts something and leaves it over to the son to take it a step further why not let HH take the sit this time.If the past leaders were so great why should HH find it difficult to steer this great country.Would it have been easier or different if HH was lozi or bemba?

  123. #173. My brother we have a problem in Zambia. It will be such a big problem to remove these old fulls from government. Thats why I said, let PF and UPND merge and HH becomes president. Sata can just sit in the background and advise HH. Its terrible to be ruled by old people when the world and technology is changing. At UNZA where i teach, there are old people (hence those problems) who can’t even open their emails or to make matters worse use powerpoint during their presentation. But they still believe they are the best and block young ones from taking over UNZA. Please you old fulls learn to retire.

  124. After last elections Sata continued to monitoir the Government and HH went into deep sleep. I have seen the behaviour of HH through the pipo he sent as receivers – the way they behaved is a true reflection oh HH – so sad.

    They used to come with two vehicle and fill them up with fuel full tanks but wanted a doctor to justify why he should get 5 litres of petrol. For this it will take time for me to think HH is the right man for the job. Sata is far much better

  125. ABASHI TRIBALISM ABASHI HH WHAT POLITICAL EXEPERIENCE HAVE YOU GOT AND FROM WHERE JUST GO AND MANAGE/RUN MANDA HILL THATS WERE YOU BELONG WE DONT WANT EXPERIMENTS ON OUR ECONOMY.LETS GO SATA ABASHI HH VIVA SATA COPPERBELT WANTS YOU THAN EVER MINERS ARE FOR YOU VIVA PF

  126. All of you who think either HH or Sata will win the elections are being naive. RB has the government machinery at his disposal- don’t you think it would stupid for him to let anyone else take the seat?Why do you think Mwaanga VJ has re-surfaced- he is the expert in rigging. This is Africa guys. Stop killing yourselves in your support for HH and Sata- come November RB will be president by hook AND crook! Wake up guys!

  127. Poor and dictatorial leadership in PF, and these guys might become the new government, so this is what we will see at national level. Can these fix their problems and not blame rigging again.These MP’s represent pipo so their pipo will not be in unison come oct 30, then other parties will take advantage. All we will hear is unfair, rigged after elections.

  129. #171, abena copperbelt, do you have any proof of what you just said? any newspaper quoted? i would love that kind of proof.

  130. Pliz people dont misunderstand Chengelo Alumni.He is very right.It is called extrapolation:
    THIEVES=Chiluba,Francis kaunda,katele,Chungu,faustin kabwe,Chibanda……………………………………..BEMBAS.Masipa amina masholi.u will never rule!viva young HH!

  131. hi pipo to me these so called rebeles shud swallow their pride especially CHISHIMBA AND MAJORY OF KASAMA CENTRAL AND MUFULIRA RESPECTIVELY, You know these rebeles they went against the rules fof the club and the deserve to be disciplined.Even they where in MMD the would have been discipline in the same way.SATA TELL DIVO TO BEHAVE COZ HE IS NOT A SAINT AS HE MAY THINK AFTER ALL HE WAS THE DLLEST AT NORTEC WHEN HE WAS DOING HIS METAL FAB ADVANCED CERT.1996 TO 19998

  132. #170 JUST TELL THE TRUTH NOT LIES PLS. THATS THE PROBLEM WITH TONGAS LIES LIES LIES EVERY 24/7. NO WONDER NO RULE WILL COME TONGA LAND.

  133. people lets not let mmd go through again,lets be very careful with V.J.He retired from politics and so he should go to the villege.PF and UPND join and remove mmd.sata can be the president and HH vice till 2011 when they should now swap.
