( repeated for those who were not able to view the story )

A Chinese mining company plans to invest $2 billion in new mines which will be the biggest investment by a private Company in the history of Zambia.

Zhonghui Mining Industry Zambia Limited plans to open new mines in Luapula and North Western Provinces, complete with a hydropower station and water supply system.

Company President, Chalres Shi said the firm also plans to set up a new city in the North-Western Province.

He however appealed to government for a prospecting licence before embarking on the project.

Mr. Shi was speaking at the headquarters of Zhonghui International Mining Group in Beijing when he met Commerce Minister, Felix Mutati. Mr. Mutati said Government will consider the project by the Chinese company, after studying the proposal in detail.

  1. Thanx to the chinese but the outgoing MMD must not see it as the ones implementing it.As PF comes in to power all the projects signed by the current government will continue.Viva PF Viva Sata, bonse iseni mubwatooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. This is appears to be good investment opportunity for the country. However, GRZ should study it carefully and ensure that the ordinary Zambian will actually benefit from it. What we don’t want is to see a city being developed exclusively for the Chinese within our boundaries.

  3. This development is very much welcome in the North western, actually we need more investors like these to be directed to North Western provice.

I must congratulate the Govenment for the efforts made in convincing these investors.

  4. This investment figure in mining does not make sense. How did they work out that they will need to invest $2billion before before they even start prospecting? What I know is in mining you can only make make projections of capital investment after detailed prospecting has been done and how much metals are available in a deposit.

  5. Thats the kind of investment that Zambia needs. Let them come maybe the problem of power shortage can be minimized. We also need to see morden towns being set up.

  6. Lets not get carried away yet. These guys are asking for a propecting licenece. This means that they havent done any exploration to prove the existence of mineral resources which can inspire the building of a new town in N/W province.Be carefull guys as this can be a breeding ground for corruption if it wont be looked at critically.Besides, the chinese have a poor record when it comes to mining safety standards. The whole world knows about this fact. So,are these the guys we want to invest in our mines.

  7. i hope its not another china town in zambia.but it sounds like a good investment and local people should benefit from these mines.

  8. LT THERES A LOT TO TALK/WRITE ABOUT IN RURAL AREAS. YOU CANT BE REPEATING THE SAME NEWS ITEMS ON THE EXPENSE OF THE SURFERING MAJORITY IN ZAMBIA. SO WHAT IF THEY ARE BUILDING IT. WHY CANT THEY FIRST FINISH THE STADIUM THEY PROMISED. THEY SHOULD FIRST START THE PROJECT B4 THEY TELL US. IN FACT, BY-AND-LARGE, THEY ARE DOING IT FOR THEIR OWN BENEFIT.

  9. Who will have title to the land on which this “city” is to built? I hope not the Chinese. We wouldn’t want a situation where we begin to slowly lose our land.

  10. The same Chinese promised to build a stadium, that’s a blue lie from the pits of hail.let them build the stadium first seeing is believing

  11. Good news and i hope it works and just can not believe , a country so rich in mineral resource can’t move forward and yet our cities are like a war zone, surely if the Chinese can see an opportunity why not take it. All i know when the infrastructure is set up it will be the benefit of our Country, let us not be critical of such investment. Just across the boarders in Zimbabwe the infrastructure built by the British still stands. So go for it china everyone else knows China is taking over the world. Ukwa lola Umwela bane ekwa ku lola.

  12. 100% ubufi. They are just luring the GRZ to give them a propecting licence. Go ahead GRZ, give them the licence on condition that they commit to the proposal.

  13. Let us be mindful at the rate at which we are giving out the resources to the so call investors. We need to thing about the future generation as well. At the rate at which we are going, there will not be any natural resources remaining in ten years time. Even the City to be built will be for themselves and not us. If we try to remaind them that this is our land, the will fight us with Kung Fu.

  14. the problem that we zambians have is that we have become very used with receiving handouts from the so called “Donors”. surely 2 billion is a lot of money. maybe these Chinese are mining Gold and we dont know anything. its a very big problem for a rich country like to be so very relax about these issues. lets analyse these proposals critically. one love

  15. The Chinese will build a ‘China Town’ in the mention area. This will be only for chinese people and no go area for Zambians. While the structures will be beautiful with tarmac streets and water-unlike the current scenario in most zambian cities-Zambians will not benefit because they have to pay rent to the investors. We need Sata & his PF to move in fast before all is lost in this nation. Long Live President Sata, Viva PF!!!Abash MMD, Abash Rupiah Banda.

  16. Who cares if they build a China city in Zambia?Whats importatnt is that foreigners respect our laws.Chinese are all over the wolrd. If you have traveled like me tell a place you went in the world were you did not see a chinese? This is a free world!Zambians will benefit if PF is in power! We need the investment but we have to be very carefull.VIVA PF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. What is very important is that both parties must fully understand and accept the terms of agreement for such undertaking.
Doing things anyhow just because you are on the receiving end can be very deadly.
It is important that carry out any undertaking on our terms and not their terms; of course their should be no loser, they must protect their interest in any endeavour, but such interest should not override ours as a nation.
And those in authority must always remember that whatever decisions are made, they should be done in the common interest of the nation.
For sure some undertakings should never be done by one single minister, but should be subject to parliament.

  18. Its possible that these Chinese can develop a new city while under ground they are busy digging Uranium, we better be careful.

Also those of you who keep dogs, get them chains otherwise ni nyama soya ya ma chines, i lost a dog just near Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe, and to date i still suspect the Chinese…..

  19. Ubwato has never articulated any meaningful policies. The captain has never subjected himself to the elections in the Party. How do we trust him? I well come any well meaning investor. Zambians open your eyes. crooks always sound sweet. Ubwato is just a big titanic on its maiden trip to nowhere. You will sink as soon as you start.

  20. It’s not unusual to see chinese investing so much in the mining industry, but Zambians have to capitalize on this for the benefit of the country. That’s why we need a “no compromise” man like Sata to stand against these tricky investors. No raw deals please!

  21. Sata was against the Chinese just last week. Now that the Taiwanese have not given him money he is supporting the Chinese. He was aginst Mwanawasa until Levy flew him to Isindingo. Now he praises Levy.

This man’s policy is based on personal benefit and wild promises which he has no intention of honouring.

By the way Sata was never imprisoned for the independence struggle. Sata was jailed for theft in 1960 in Bwana Mkubwa prison, but we can forgive him for that.

  22. Is it just me, or does someone see something wrong with someone else building a city, other than the government? Will they build the city and just hand it back to us, for free?!! Where is the catch? Shouldn’t they work with grz and nha to build this city?

  23. Lets not sell Zambia’s soul to the devil. I hope GRZ read all the fine print. The last thing we need is a 300 year lease which will enslave our people and pollute our environment.

  24. 1. Have we failed ourselves or what?
    2. Are we acknowledging failure?
    3. Are we giving part of country to china?
    4. Do we have the same braines as the chinese.
    5. Do we think?

    I need some answers.

  25. # 38 you ka high School chap, what are you talking about? By the way, have even understood the topic on the table? If you can’t understand English properly, muleikalafye.

This is not high School debate. Go and study.

  26. No we dont need any china town .a visitor does not chose which bed is gona sleep on.if at all they claim to come and stay with us let them stay any where ,but not

  27. If they are real investors let them start with building a new city which will definitely give employment to the Zambians and easy accommodation. There is no need for them to give conditions.

  28. At the rate we are exploiting our natural resources we’ll have holes all over the country. It will be an eyesore. Ithe investors will take profits and leave us holes. Lets not leave them alone.

  29. It is time we woke up – if you invest $2B upfront without even bothering to prospect the land for potential mineral resources, you have got yourself a very good real estate deal. One day, we are going to wake up and find ourselves slaves in the land of our forefathers. Going by the impunity with which the Zambian workers are treated by Chinese employers, I would say they see us nothing more than that – slaves.

  30. This is very funny. The Chinese want to build a city in Zambia! Hahaha.

Be carefull of Chinese food products. Some of them contain industrial chemical, called melamine.

  31. It’s over for you bantus. Throw in the towel. Accept the Chinese as your saviors. Worship Chairman Mao as your personal LORD and SAVIOR. Much like Kaunda and his corrupt bud Julius “DUMBASS” Nyerere did. The Chinaman is coming in droves – SOON! Followed by Chinawoman. And, they’re here to STAY – permanently. There’s nothing, and I mean, NOTHING you can do to STOP it. ACCEPT it!. Vote for CHANG (Ching Chang CHINAMAN) – CHANGE we need. Remember the one TRUE Zambian that warned the bantus about this. HIS EXCELLENCY SIMON KAPWEPWE! The ONLY Zambian politician that TRUELY LOVED ZAMBIA AND PUT ZAMBIA FIRST!
