Govt considers reopening Mbereshi, Chitambo nursing schools

Share

Government says it intends to open Mbereshi and Chitambo Nursing schools as a measure of scaling up human resource base in the health sector.

And government intends to recruit over 50, 000 critical health workers by 2010 to add up to the already existing over 28, 000 health personnel in the country.

Health Minister, Brian Chituwo, disclosed this in Livingstone today during the Sixth graduation ceremony of the Livingstone School of Nursing.

Dr Chituwo said government is aware of the shortfall of health workers that the country is facing and its negative effects on service delivery.

He said the public health sector is operating at 57 per cent capacity, a situation that results in overworking on the part of workers and  underservice for patients.

“This awareness on the part of the MMD is exactly why we have pledged in our Fifth National Development Plan (FNDP) that, as a key health priority, human resource development for health shall take center stage as we pursue national development in general and now we are delivering on this promise,” Dr. Chituwo said.

The minister said government is firmly implementing the Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan (HRP) as a roadmap for addressing the human resources crisis that the country is presently facing.

Dr. Chituwo said government has issued a directive to increase intakes and the capacity for training and reopening Nursing Schools that had once been closed due to a critical shortage of nurse tutors.

He further said the the increased funding to health ministry is a significant step that government has taken to adequately address factors affecting service delivery.

And Livingstone General Hospital Director, Dr. Theresa Kafula appealed to government to send a Zambian surgeon and a Physician to the hospital.

“I see no reason why this institution is not yet elevated to central status as it is also worthy mentioning here that we compare very well with the existing third level hospitals in the country,” she said.

  7. Here we go again, campaign gimmicks. Anyway whilst you are at it, why don’t you pretend you’ll open up one in western province as well? we may just consider voting for you if you sale us a good story…

  8. No2 is Mbereshi a Bemba area? I thought Bembas lived in Northern province. Even so at least he is trying to appeal to a broad range of Zambians unlike some other leaders who think that the whole of Zambia ought to be Lubemba.

  9. #11 Sorry if you are one of those that are easily pleased with promises, or is it a case of having something to do with MMD?

Some of these promises are just ludicrous and I am sure you know this. It is cheap African politics. Unfortunately you and I know very well that this sadly works in Africa. Reopening two “colleges” now because there is an election?

Tax cuts, yeah even Torries are on about it. lol!

  10. Its very sad to notice the arrogance in some of our politicians today,Honestly ba RB where were U(MMD)all this time MMD ndimwe bakawalala all the time but when its election time you want to be angels just look at the list of names on RB`S campain team impupu fye shonse. Ni pabwato this time mwa jama.

  11. How many schools are there to educate 50,000 health workers in Zambia? Why is Health Minister, Brian Chituwo cheating the people of livingstone and zambia. MMD should tell the truth because we don’t even have that number being educated at UNZA or colleges. Chituwo tell the truth if people are to consider MMD. yesterday it was Namugala,Aka defended by the other likes of Mulongoti. Today it is you… Zambians wake up..Stop these lies.

  12. #16 Hope you are in Russia. I am praying for a very cold winter and the MMD continue to buy ama chifi those cars so you can freeze to death. lol!

  13. Practical wisdom is only to be learned in the school of experience.
Precepts and instructions are useful so far as they go, but,
without the discipline of real life, they remain of the nature of theory only. And Sata is the only one of the three who has the practical wisdom. VIVA SATA!!!

  14. What RB is doing confirms that he is a good politician. Sir Winston Churchill puts it this way: “Politics is the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn’t happen.”

  15. Can someone confirm allegations that The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has banned live phone in programmes on radio stations.

  16. WE HAVE RESOLVED IN PRINCIPLE AS CHIEFS IN NWP THAT THE VISION OF LPM (MHSRIP) SHOULD CONTINUE THRU HIS VICE. STOP DREAMING OF EVER REACHING THE SHORE IN A SINKING BOAT WHILE PADLING WITH A LAME HAND. TRY IN 2011.

  17. Govt must come up with a law that demands that western powers compensate it for the loss of medical personnel to these countries after spending huge amounts training the medical personnel. This is becoz we expect the western countries to be professional and morally responsible and therefore lead the way for a more balanced share of this critical human resource. They can not go on turning their heads away from a problem that is more than just an ‘economic issue’. It demands action outside of market forces – we are dealing with a matter of life and death here people. They could 100% fund these training instituions, or else remit lumpsums for every Zambian medical personnel under their employ

  18. A person is free to work where ever he wants as long as he is given a job-Human rights.

It is not up to the western world to solve every other country`s problem-Even their people go to work in other countries (human rights).

It is scandalous for a government to pay a doctor peanuts when ministers get God knows how much-Not all ministers have PHDs.

It is not the western world`s fault when someone campaining goes to buy a chief a very expensive car and not drugs-Leave them alone please.

Time we set our prioties right. Lets stop crying and sort things out. Can not see it happening though. Africa will always be Africa.

  19. Kasenengwa where is Vera? Is she busy arranging Mutarika connection? Kasenengwa clinic was supposed to be turned into a training school. What has Vera Ululani Mwendo Tembo done in this constituency????????
