Government to reduce the price of fuel

Government says there are possibilities that the price of fuel could be reduced by about one thousand kwacha.

Finance Minister, Ngandu Magande, also says there will be a further price cut on fuel following a reduction of oil prices by oil producers and exporting countries.

Mr. Magande however told ZNBC news in Livingstone, Monday, that this will depend on information gathered by a technical committee mandated to study possibilities of reducing the price of fuel.

The committee was formed after Acting president, Rupiah Banda, directed Mr. Magande and his Energy counterpart, Kenneth Konga, to find ways of reducing the cost of fuel.

Mr. Magande said government has not immediately reduced the prices of fuel because the country is still consuming old stocks.

Petrol costs about K9,700.00 per liter, while diesel sells about K8,400.00.

And Several Lusaka residents have welcomed the proposal by acting President, Rupiah Banda,aimed to reduce the price for fuel.

Residents talked to by ZNBC, Monday, said Zambia has the highest pump price for fuel in the region and any form of intervention is welcome.

One of the motorists, Victor Silungwe, said the reduction in fuel prices should not be politicised.

Mr. Silungwe said low fuel prices will reduce production and transport costs.

Another motorist, Edgar Ngoma, said reducing fuel prices will boost production in the country.

Government has appointed a team of experts to study how best to keep fuel prices low.

  3. This is just campain. Watch this space, soon before you realise it especially after the October 30 elections. I don’t know why but I just don’t trust these guys. They are using this as a strategy. It’s a very good idea and going down by K1,500 would even help, but I only hope it’s not going down by K1,000 and then will rise by K2,000 by next year June. God help us!

  4. Politics, surely is a funny and dirty game. It buffles me how we always seem to have the esential day to day commodities drastically drop in price when there are elections around the corner. That is why we need to educate our people. And this business of the head of state being able to use tax payers money to campaign seriously has to be addressed in the constitution ammendment.

  6. Where have they been all this time for it to suddenly become so easy to reduce the price of fuel? They are now making it seem like Banda is a hero for simply demanding that a ‘team of experts’ look into this and within a matter of days we are hearing how it can and will be done. Aren’t leaders always supposed to look out for the best interests of their people? It just makes me wonder because when prices are increased and people cry out, no one listens. But suddenly, it is possible to reduce prices. I guess every year should be an election year since that is the only way that things will ever get done.

  12. #7 It’s just the shorts getting squeezed today. Today was the close of the futures contract for Oil and traders had to cover their short positions. Expect Oil to fall to $110 tomorrow. Basically People borrowed alot of oil contracts sold them and hoped to buy them back at a lower price and that did not happen, so they have to rush to buy at whatever price so that they can pay back the oil contract they borrowed. That is what has happened today. It’s a short term move. There are just no fundamentals to sustain oil at these levels.

    1 Gal is approx 3.78 liters.
    Here in the USA we are paying about 3.8 USD per gal of petrol which is approx 10 USD per gal in Zambia…!

  18. The price of oil today has actually gone up and not down. Magande must either be talking about some decline that happened early on in the month or he is talking about a different OPEC all together.

    But that aside, I think to talk about a single Kwacha reduction on a price of almost K10,000.00(ZMK) is an insult to the Zambians who genuinely need a break on these prices.

If you have noticed gold and oil have posted increased action and posted higher gains. Ofcourse the gold market is considered more stable. We will see further drops in the price of oil on the world market in the process

The Govt is now strongly supporting small and medium enterprises with incentives and funds through an SME division,try the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission as well, formal employment is not the only means to an end believe me, there is so much potential in ZED.   83. How are they gonna cushion the deficit? They need more money to carry on the Rupiah legacy of distributing fitenges, sugar and mealie meal. All that needs dollars and not just any dollar(Zim Dollar) but the Dollar or pound to keep buying their way to state house and cabinet office.   98. Imwee, Mr Magande is saying that fuel can not reduced immediately because we are still using old stock. But why is it that when they annouce increase of fuel prices at international market or other factors, fuel prices in hike up immediately and dont wait for old stock to finish first?

    This are just politics, they are trying to win votes and i dont think fuel price will reduce soon.

  107. The problem we us Africans is that we are too slow to act. The global price of oil are constantly changing due to global market forces. Recently the prices went down and if we are sincere about our prices in Zambia being affected by the global prices, we should be adjusting the prices accordingly. Now here is a situation where the prices go down but by the time government puts up a committee to do a survey the prices are going up again. Now we need another committee to do a survey on the increased price. Come on Africans the market forces don’t wait for you to put up a committee, they dictate, so u move at their pace. Is that too cryptic to understand? Poor Africans.

The answer on fuel price rests with the energy regulation board and Ministry of Finance.This talk of a Committee appointed to submit findings to another commitee is just a way government acts when they know what needs to be done but they lack the guts to do it.Why should Zimbabwean fuel be 2 pin cheaper than ours.Its about taxes and the monopoly that Oil companies have been allowed to make.Secondly the electricity mess is a factor in the matter.We need leadership that can bite the bullet and walk the talk.

  239. Fuel and DSTV are most expensive in Zed, the Chinese and other countries dump stuff in Zambia and we’re quite happy to accept this. Something needs to be done so that Zambians are treated fairly. Why should people earning less than our fellow Africans be paying more for the same services.

  244. the fuel price should be going down by a minimum of 40% to the existing price. this would be in line with the recent decline in global prices. Note that this reduction does not address the excessive taxes we pay for our fuel. Bloody Zimbabwe is charging US$1.20 per litre. Where do we Zedians go wrong and always get cheated. K500-K1,000 is a slap in the face!!!!
