Be on alert over contaminated Chinese milk

Share

The Zambia Consumer Association has reminded health inspectors in the Ministry of Health to be on high alert over the contaminated liquid Milk from China tainted with melamine.

Executive Secretary Muyumnda Illilonga said if  all the Milk products have already entered the Country and were on the market, it must be removed immediately to avoid loss of lives especially among infants.

In an interview with ZANIS in kitwe today, Mr  Ililonga advised that since this was a scandal, the government should institute strict measures to ensure that all imported milk products from Asia were tested.

Mr Illilonga  added that many Zambians were extremely worried over the scandal as many Chinese products have flooded Zambian markets.

In another development, Mr Illilonga said Zambians should not celebrate over the reduction of fuels by the energy regulation board (ERB).

He said although the Association has welcomed the decision to reduce the pump prices of fuel, the margin that has been effected was very narrow to warrant any meaningful relief on the consumer.

Mr Illilonga said even with this reduction, the price of fuel in Zambia was the highest in the sub-region.

He wondered why the pump price of petrol per 1 litre could cost more than K6,000 per litre as compared to Botswana or Zimbabwe.

He explained that the price of fuel affects the prices of other goods and services and with this development, even the prices of mealie meal has reached alarming rates which was not affordable to poor Zambians.

  1. i agree with you guys noworder we need sata man of action not only during capaing time thats when you start distributing sugar no nononono twakana.

  2. atleast as a country we can produce our own milk/food staffs. why bring milk all the way from china, is this what the MMD is calling investment? i dont think so,lives can be lost with such carelessness, restrict the kind of imports . it is also killing the local industry

  3. These short quacks make thing that they don’t even use in their own country. Zedians are very good at jumping for anything they consider cheap. Buying of cheap things will oneday cost us.

There was a time medical stores limited dumped expired milk which was meant for children with malnutrition. When people saw the council truck at the council dumping site, they started collecting the expired milk and went to sell at city market and everyone who was buying was saying “this milk is very cheap”and they bought. Disaster struck in various homes.

  4. Please people get your facts right, not every Chinese in Zambia IS AN INVESTOR! These people come in as traders and everything else under the sun, an investor is one who brings in significant money and creates more than 10 jobs for Zambians. How many people do traders employ? one? two? ask yourself before you label every Chinese, Indian, Lebanese an investor, they are simply foreigners living in Zambia and conducting a business.

  5. Am so worried my baby uses formular milk as a working mother am very worried. What is the name of this same milk? Am using Promil 2. Or is it an ingredient in the milk. Please clear my worry.

  6. Infact imports of all chinese products should banned…..unless they can prove their products are of high standards. Do we still have a bureau of standards mu zed?

  7. Bring back queen Victoria. Africa has failed to look after itself.

  8. #14, you’ve got a warped logic & sad inferiority complex! When was the last time you were in Zed? Africa has it’s own unique problems due to lack of credible leadership but there are many examples to show that that things are actually getting better e.g Botswana, Angola, even our very own Zed are all showing great signs of economic progress under good political leadership. Continue day dreaming in your tiny council flat in north London…! init my a$$…!!!

  9. ZBS is always fast asleep. what is this institution doing in this country?
please woke up and operate like SABS. SO MUCH SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS IN zAMBIA …. is the policy operating like a body of standards. GVT CLOSE THIS INST. its draining tax payers money.

  10. That is why our Sata doesnot like Chinese invstors. They bring destruction where ever they invest. So be serious zedians and vote for Sata and zed will not be a dumping ground for chinese poisoned foods. Vote pa Bwato vote for Sata

  11. # 12, yes we do have a bureau of standards in Zambia, I just wish they could DO WHAT THEY ARE PAID TO DO! Please don’t pay attention to # 14’s comments people, its too hot to aggravate yourselves like that.

  12. #14, I also live & work abroad but would never look down upon mother Zed, NEVER!!! Infact, I’m investing heavily back home & hope to return there in the near future. Problem with you “Engee” boys & chicks is u want to portray an imaginary lifestyle to people back home but I’ve been to London several times & was shocked to find alot of your ilk getting by doing “odd” jobs in old peoples homes; mopping floors in Tesco; frying burgers in McDonalds; all the while riding the underground and freezin’ your butts off!!! The Zambians doing well in the UK are civilised & would never talk down on Zed & Africans the way you’ve done. Kiss my black behind…!

  13. all chainishi products are fake and poisonous…. beware Zambians. buy original stuff… cheap can be very costly in the end……

  14. ZBS IS TOOTHLESS …………. they dont even know how to make stds like in rsa. You have to be HACCP COMPLIANT for you to supply the supermkt and not ISO pilish………….. ZBS PLEASE COMMAND THIS IMMEDIATELY… we are at risk. ASK Zambia Breweriers FMI

  15. what do you expect from the chinese? The guys have even gone to the extent of making the expectant women to terminate the pregnancies if the babies to be born are found to have a deformity. nitupuba to ma chocholi.

  16. #14 greedy politicians are the ones messing up with african wealthy.they are no longer servants but masters.corruption is the order of the day…. imagine we had 3trilion ZMK wasted thru public workers —-a third of the our Budget. we need discipline in africa.we need leaders who can activate things not just listening to auditors report but going furthur by axing the culprits from their position. it is shame that we talk of corruption but none is done to stop it even in our houses like we see in our own gvt institutions.

  17. You mean our Zambian milk can be enough for our babies; whose mothers are mostly sick with HIV.

Pls GOV do something about this issue.

    God bless this forsaken land.

  18. No wonder Zambians are always scared of anything with the lable made in China. Infact anything with Chinese characters; even people from the villages (the disadvantage lot) do know the difference of Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters Coz chinese have just f&*Kd up our country with their fake goods.

  19. The news of contaminated milk was broadcsted like last week here in Beijing and am wondering how ZBS have just known of it now. We need to clean up that office and replace it with patriotic people who’ll put taxpayers money to good use.

  20. Everything is cartered for in the laws of the land but enforcers are not there or are simply ignorant.

The number one problem in Zambia is not lack of education but laziness to think.

  21. When Sata speaks about fake chinese investors you say he will chase investors but are these the kind of investors we need who keep genuine products in their country and inflate the Zambian market with fake chinese products. If we are not carefull the chinese will take over this nation in the name of investment. Why is it that everything is China,milk,clothes,hi-fi,mines mention it,it’s all chinese.Though they are the fastest growing economy in the world it is too much of fake chinese products in Zambia.Vote for the man of actions,Sata.

  22. #26 Sata said he welcomes any investor that respects the laws and people of the Republic of Zambia. But he has warned all those behaving contrary that they will be severly dealt with. I hope he includes your China-loving behind too 😀

    Pabwatooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  23. immediatelly after celebrating MCS’s win, we’ll embark on vigorous campaign for given lubinda’s 2011 presidential elections. viva taoloka!viva MCS!viva lubinda!viva experience!viva 17 tribes(or is it 19 now)!viva zambia!viva ziko lamutendele amama!

  24. Iwe #14 Where is your pride? You want colonial rule again? #16 was right continue day dreaming in you council flat in Brixton. Am quiet sure you are receiving the Queen victoria’s social benefits thats why you are tripping.Gulimasaka iwe.

  25. 10# these people who come to zimbia these so called Chinese, Indian, Lebanese they are business men and women, they are the one’s who are ticking your country over and giving jobs to zanbians.
Tell me how many zambian investors are there in other countries who ae real investors and employing locals?
With out these business men and women where would zambia be know?

    14# you are a d**k head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. #14,I doubt if you have even managed to aquire a council flat. Im really disappointed, a normal Zambian will always be pround to be Zambian no matter where you are. It is pipo like you who will never progress coz you think a white man shouldd always be your boss.

  27. #25You have good points but not on corruption, have you not read about Zambia’s improvement in the fight against corruption. Please dont commit falacies, anyhow i understand its possible that you didnt read that article on corruption before you wrote what you have written above.

#14 its a pity the way you about yourself especially if you are black it means that thats actually the way you feel about yourself (inferior to yourself and feel of white supremacy)(this is what Neson mandela was against)his statue is even there in the U.K, even white people respect him the world over) and that you are not intouch of whats happening around you please do some more reading before you write stuff.

  28. Cheap is surely expensive. This should teach us never to rush for cheap products. ZBS do somethig, we have our lives at stake here and scrutinise these chineese products before they come in the country. You have a reason to do that, even in china they are not using them but turned Zambia into a dumping ground.

  29. #9 get your facts straight before you show your ignorance. The contaminated products are also used in China. Infact there has been over 4 fatalities and over 13,000 Chinese children admitted to hospital since public disclosure of the contamination with melamine in especial one brand of powdered milk called SANLU – I do not know if there is any other brand name using this formulation and somehow gets to Zambia – but look out for SANLU. I hope this helps, #11 and #33. Also this is one of the most expensive milk products in China so do not lie to yourselves about it being cheap. it has been exported to other countries and especially New Zealand, where the cover of contamination was blown

  30. # 43 read the post on #45 these product are in use in China – and are not necessarily cheap. But the ZBS must be on alert all the same!

  31. It’s too late. As usual, Zambia, incapable of detecting anything that is a threat on their own, must wait until someone elese has raised the alarm and then react. What do you think killed all those kids you have been burying these last six months? It’s the same contaminated milk from China! May more will die, whether it’s in the mines or in the supermarkets, this is the price of doing business with China without proper planning.

  32. TWO MONTHS AGO WHILST IN LIVINGSTONE, I WAS ABOUT TO BUY FISH IN A WELL KNOWN SHOP. ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT THE FISH WAS IMPORTED FROM THAILAND!!!!!

I WAS DISGUSTED, BUSTED AND SHOCKED TO SAY THE LEAST.
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON PA ZED??????

  33. Mwafwa iwe ,This is not a joke lets be serious. These products will cost us dearly.Even the contraceptive bills ,condoms we need to be cleared.Babies are dying because of this milk 13000 in China imagine the effect it can have on the Zambian population. Now we are seeing Chines ice cream on our streets .What is wrong with us .

    God help us

    Living dangerously

  36. Just made a discovery… actually its not everyone that appears with a foreign Flag are in fact outside Zambia. Its the Country settings of your computer that’s tells LT which country u r in. E.g # 14 is from Kalingalinga but has not changed the country settings of hi pentium II pc donated to him by some local NGO.

  37. I never had any trust in Chinese products. Its all low quality and you end up spending more in the long run. You get what you pay. Cheap stuff from China is a waste of your money.
I cant believe that they were adding industrial chemical to baby milk powder. Not good on their part. Ohh well, at least now they are exposed.

  38. We have leaders who are NOt principled at all and DO not care about their. I could not believe it on wednesday/thursday 24th/25th September when govt was urging traders selling the same milk! Why do we have health inspectors or ZBS? Honestly people are so greed nowadays and you expect them to just come in the open and say they have the contaminated milk? Why no have health inspectors go flat out and remove this product from the shelves! We take things lightly. I would not be .surprised if someone in govt is getting kickbacks concerning the same.
